Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Ford Explorer

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Ford Explorer

Today we are working on a 2000 Ford Explorer. We will be installing Hidden Hitch part number 70647. This will also be comparable to Draw-Tite part number 75083. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in ing accessories for your new hitch, such as a bike rack, cargo carrier, or draw bar. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost portion of the bumper it is 3-3/4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 15-3/4 inches. Now let us go ahead with the installation. 0:30

Before installing our hitch, let us point out some mounting holes. We got a pre-drilled hole here in the bottom of the frame on the drivers side. We also have one here on the side of the frame on the drivers side. This will be our rear most mounting point on the drivers side and it will be identical on the passengers side. With our holes pointed out, we will go ahead and show you our fasteners that will go through the bottom side of the frame. We will be using a bolt and block fasteners. We will put those together and feed them down into our frame. The other side of our hardware will be a conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch and our nut. 1:10

Now we are ready to put our hitch in place. It is good to have an extra set of hands while you put the hitch in place. Just install our fasteners finger tight this time while we get all of our hardware in place. Our vertical holes, we use the bolt and lock style also. We will be using a lock washer and nut on our vertical fastener. With all of our fasteners installed, let us go ahead and tighten everything down. With everything tightened down, we torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all of our fasteners torqued to specifications, that completes the installation of Hidden Hitch part number 70647.

I'm very happy with the hitch receiver. Shipping was quick and it was well packaged when it arrived. It was a snap to install. It took me longer to find the appropriate sockets to tighten the bolts than anything. I installed it myself with the 'help' of my 2 year old in about 15 minutes. Would have taken even less time with a second helper that was a little stronger to hold up the other end. It was a tight fit around my standard size spare but I did like other reviewers mentioned and just dropped the spare a few inches, installed the hitch, and put the spare back up. No problem. 80012

Apart from one issu, it was easy to install on a 1997 Ford Explorer. The nuts which screw into the two bolts which are affixed in a downward position are not easy to grab hold of with a socket wrench. The hitch tube blocks a portion of the holding nut. So the socket grabbed the nut in a "off kilter" position which then did not allow me to apply full torque when tightening the nut. The nut is therefore not at its proper torque specifications.38473

The hitch arrived shortly after I ordered it, it was easy to install , everything fit correctly as advertised. Installation took about 20 minutes. I wish they had included some anti seize for the bolts and trailer ball. The hitch looks good too. 19426

This is my second time using etrailer.com. The first purchase and installation went very well as did this purchase. Fast shipping, great service for the do-it-yourself crowd. Just a note: My first purchase I was lucky all the fasteners stayed in the box. The box was torn because the hitch was loose. On this purchase, the box was torn again but someone had taped in up (most likely UPS). However, on this one, all the fasteners were all wrapped up and firmly attached to the hitch - good idea guys. Also, my harness and other small parts were in separate box inside - good thing or they would have likely been lost.17839

Installation was a breeze after we loosened the spare tire up so that the hitch had enough clearance. 17056

  • Which Class III Trailer Hitches Will Fit Around the 16 Inch Spare Tire on a 2000 Ford Explorer
  • There are a couple of options for Class III trailer hitches that will fit with the 16 inch spare tire on your 2000 Ford Explorer and you will not have to make any modifications to make them fit. I spoke with my contact at Draw-Tite and he stated that the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75096, will fit. This hitch has the same weight capacities as the hitch you have referenced (5,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 500 pounds tongue weight capacity). I have included a link to the installation details

  • Fit of Class III Hitch on 1998 Ford Explorer with Full Size Spare Tire
  • The instructions and product description are stating that the round tube style receiver hitches from Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch will not fit on Explorers made in 1998 and later with a full size, 16 inch spare tire. You can install the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch, item # 75096, with the full size spare. You may have to lower the spare to install these hitches, but it will be repositioned after the install is complete. If you do not have the 16 inch full size spare then you
