Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2008 Ford Edge - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2008 Ford Edge, we'll be installing Hidden Hitch, part number 90164. Now before we begin our installation, here is what your hitch will look like on the vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you in selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper is 5 inches and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 13-1/2 inches. Now, let's go ahead with our install. Now to begin our installation, we'll need to lower the exhaust system at the three rubber isolators.

There are two here on the mufflers as well as one here just forward of the mufflers here at the Y in the exhaust. Now to make this a little easier, we'll go ahead and spray the isolators down with a spray lubricant. We can then remove them with a simple pry bar. Now before removing the forward isolator, you want to put a strap underneath the exhaust to hold the exhaust up. This will help prevent damage to your exhaust system.

Now that our exhaust is lowered, we can go ahead and remove both heat shields. There are three screws holding the heat shields up as well as a plastic clip on each heat shield. After removing the three screws, we'll simply pull down on the heat shield to remove the plastic clip. With both heat shields down, we'll now go ahead and trim them as shown in the instructions. Now, I'm going to go ahead and hold the heat shield up in place and draw a line to indicate where we'll be cutting it.

We'll need to make sure that we're cutting enough of the heat shield out to leave the holes exposed that we'll be using to mount our hitch. Now with both heat shields trimmed, we're ready to install our hardware into the frame. We'll be using the carriage bolt, the square spacer block, and our fish wire. We'll feed our fish wire in through the mounting bolt hole location and out the rear or the frame. We can then slide the spacer block on and screw the carriage bolt to the fish wire.

We'll then pull the spacer block and the carriage bolt through the frame and out the mounting bolt hole location. We'll repeat this process for the remaining three fasteners on this vehicle. Now that all our hardware is in place in the frame, we'll need to reinstall our heat shields. We'll place the heat shields up and using the plastic clip, we'll reinstall the heat shield, holding into place. We'll then use the bolt here next to the clip and go ahead and tighten it down. Now, the two other bolts on the heat shield will not be reused as the hitch will crush the hitch shield between the hitch and the frame itself. Now, we're ready to put our hitch into position. It would be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while you install your hardware. Now, we'll be using the conical toothed washer, making sure that the teeth of the washer face the hitch and the hex nut. We'll loosely install our hardware where we can then tighten it down and torque it to specification as indicated in the instructions. And with all our hardware torqued to specification, we can go ahead and reinstall our exhaust, completing the installation of Hidden Hitch, part number 90164 on our 2008 Ford Edge.

Ask the Experts about this Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Where to Attach Curt Stabilization Strap on a 2008 Ford Edge to Carry a Bike Rack
  • Curt does not specify where the stabilization strap # 18050 has to go on a vehicle, just that it has to be attached to the vehicle and the carrier in the hitch. Generally you will want the connection point on your 2008 Ford Edge to be higher than where it is attached at the bike rack. It would probably be easiest to attach the vehicle end to the gap between the rear hatch and the body of the vehicle somewhere. If you go with one of the Draw-Tite or Hidden Hitch trailer hitches (# 90164,...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2010 Ford Edge Towing a Bayliner Boat
  • The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 90164 has a gross trailer weight capacity of 3,500 pounds and a tongue weight capacity of 300 pounds. If the weights on your trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, do not exceed these capacities, yes it can be used to tow the trailer. You will also need to look at the owners manual for the vehicle to determine its towing capacities. Always go by the lower capacity rating. The correct ball mount for this hitch is # 36051 and you can use pin and clip # PC2....

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a 2010 Ford Edge with 4 inches of Rise
  • If you do need a 4 inch rise ball mount the Curt Ball Mount part # C45000 would be the correct one for you to use. This ball mount measures 13-1/4 inches from the center of the pin hole to the center of the ball hole on the ball mount platform. This should be more than enough distance to clear your bumper, but it wouldn't hurt to compare those measurements to your vehicle/hitch. I attached an FAQ article on determining the correct rise/drop ball mount for you to check out as well.
