Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Chevrolet Equinox - Draw-Tite

Today in 2016 Chevrolet Equinox we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the 2" X 2" opening, part number is 76028. Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. You can see most of it is going to be hidden in behind our rear fascia. We've left our panel off, you can trim it, however, you will be removing the majority of the panel. So, whatever look you can go for there, you can certainly go for it.

It's a nice easily installation of the hitch. Once installed you're going to have a very adaptable 2" X 2" receiver tube opening. This works out great with ball mounts, bike racks, cargo carriers, any number of things there. See we've got our reinforcement collar here at the end, it's going to have the rounded off design. Pin holes here, you can see the large pin hole closer to the front of the vehicle, that's the one we're going to use to secure all of our items with. It's 5/8 of an inch in diameter, plenty of room on each side for any Class 3 accessory you might choose to put on there.

One of those is the J-Pin stabilization system, it's an anti-rattle system designed for use with this hitch and that's when you actually use this forward hole. That would be the only application that'll come into play. Never want to use that to secure any other items. We're going to have the rolled steel stock style safety chain connection point here, plenty of room there so whatever kind of hook you're going to be attaching, shouldn't be an issue there whatsoever to get that hooked up. When it comes to your tow ratings or it comes to weight ratings on the hitch, we've got a 675 pound tongue weight rating, so that's the maximum downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening. We've got a 4,500 pound gross trailer weight rating.

It's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we we're to load up. If we move into a weight distribution setup, those numbers are going to stay the same, 675 for our tongue weight, 4,500 pounds for the gross trailer weight rating and, of course, we will want to check our owner's manual on the Equinox. We're going to see what it's rated for and we'll go off whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now, a few measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting your ball mounts, bike racks or hitch cargo carrier. We'll be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening, we've got about 14-3/4". Then from the center of out hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 3-1/4".

The first thing we're going to do for installation is get our weld nuts cleaned out. We'll start here on the passenger side. We want to go outside of the frame rail. We'll have two weld nuts right here on the side, one right on top of the other one. You see we've got one in here and then just above it right there. We're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant. Get one of our nylon tube brushes, this is 814092, just going to make sure these are nice and clean. That way our bolts will thread easily. Now we can head over to the driver's side, we're going to have these two in the exact same location there. Now, we've also go the little panel that's right here that we're going to remove. There are two tabs on the outside corner and we kind of push up on. You see how those just kind of come down and out, just like that. Kind of pull down and out across the rear here. If you need to, you can push in on the tabs on the inside here, but most of the time they come out without any issue. Now, we're going to take our carriage bolt, it's going to be threaded onto our pull wire. We're going to take our large spacer block and also place that on. The bolt's just going to go up and into the frame, follow that with our spacer block. We'll pull it down just like that. This is going to provide for one of our lower attachment points here. We need to go over to the passenger side and we'll repeat that exact same process there. Now we're going to look right up underneath the center of the rear fascia and you'll see your rectangular shaped holes and your round holes. We'll use our same pull wire, we're going to go through our round hole and then all the way out to the end of our bumper there. Come out right here without much issue. Now what we need to do is take one of the smaller spacer blocks and that needs to go on the wire and then we'll thread on one of our carriage bolts. Slide the spacer on the end of the bumper, slide our bolt in and then just pull them right on over and that's going to give us one of our rear attachment points. We'll do the same thing for this hole right here closer to the driver's side and we'll be ready to put our hitch in. Now, we're going to get our hitch raised up into position. It's a really good idea to get an extra set of hands to kind of help you. You just guide that driver's side up over the exhaust first. You can see this middle section if we just try to push up it's going to hit that fascia so we'll tuck it up behind. Then we just want to be careful not to push our carriage bolts that we've got installed up inside the frame. Then we're going to take our black bolts, we're going to push the conical tooth washer on those, we want the teeth of that washer to face in towards our hitch. Then those weld nuts on the side are a great spot to get a bolt started. Once we've got that started we're just going to let the hitch rest on that bolt. That will help us get the rest of our bolts into position. Just like before, we have our conical tooth washer that we're going to place up on the bolt. We'll use a hex nut. Now here at our center attachment points, we're going to do the same thing with the conical tooth washer, also one of our nuts. Kind of a tight squeeze to get your hand in there, but your fascia will come down enough. We have all our fasteners started, we just want to take a quick look to see that we've got our hitch centered here and then we'll start snugging those down. You can see you just kind of pull your fascia down to get to these. Now we want to look into our instructions and there we're going to find the torque specifications for our hardware. We'll go through and get everything torqued down properly. If you want this rear panel to go back on, you're going to have to trim it for our tabs to go back into their slots and to go back up here in the side. When you do trim it, however, you take out most of the material. We've decided and the customer also decided they really didn't want to trim the panel. This is just fine. Having this thing cut off, real long cut-outs all the way around, just doesn't look all that great on the back of the vehicle, but it is an option that you do have. With everything torqued to specification, that's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame custom fit Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number is 76028., on our 2016 Chevrolet Equinox.

I searched the internet to put a hitch on my 2016 Chevy Equinox and found an instructional video from eTrailer.com where they installed on my exact car. I decided to go with eTrailer.com because they answered all my questions and because of the video-I support businesses that go the extra mile with these videos. Shipping was quick and well tracked, however, the box was flimsy and the one end of the hitch had come out of the box side and the ball mount could have easily come out of that hole during shipping. If I were eTrailer.com I'd charge an extra couple of bucks for more sturdy boxes-people will still buy as eTrailer is a well-trusted brand and this would overcome a lot of the negative reviews you'll see on their site about this shipping issue in their own reviews :-) I installed the hitch by myself (definitely recommend help as two people holding it up to the frame makes attaching 100% easier) in about 45 minutes total (out of the box, read instructions, review video again and installation complete). All hardware went on with no issues. Great quality hitch! I also bought the lesser expensive wiring assembly because most recent equinox's come hitch ready with pre-wired assembly in the left side compartment-snap and done. Picked up a new trailer at Home Depot within days and drove 5 feet and the clacking was horrible. I had always had a welded hitch before buying a hitch that took a ball mount. I really thought something was wrong and when I searched the internet that night it turns out this is very common. However, all you need is some sort of hitch "silencing" device. The number of options will drive you mad but I went with the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch and it did the trick for much less than most of the other options. If I were eTrailer.com I'd have that as one of the RECOMMENDED add-ons and explanation why its super-worthy when customers are buying a hitch. Would have saved me the time and hassle of dealing with it later and the extra shipping charge for buying after the fact when I got free shipping for the other items the first time :-) All in all, I'm super, super happy with my hitch, wiring assembly, ball mount, ball mount locking pin and the hitch silencer. Buy with confidence from eTrailer.com Paul R., Syracuse, NY 287168

Great product..Watch the videos this site has provided and installation is simple.. Only hassle was existing weld nuts had some rust since my Equinox is a 2014. So prep older vehicles and you should be fine.. 295845

Great shipping time. Placed my order Sunday and products arrived on Wednesday. Everything fits perfectly. Ordered the Class III hitch by DrawTight and a cargo basket to fit by Curt. Everything is exactly what I thought it would be. 271957

Once I got all of the corrosion/ rust cleaned out of the pre-threaded holes on the vehicle the the hitch bolted right up. Took me about 45 minutes total (by myself) for the installation. I would say had I had clean un-corroded/rusted holes to deal with, the installation could have easily been completed in 30 minutes or less. The hitch fits up nicely under the vehicle and is basically hidden away and unobtrusive. Watch the installation videos beforehand to get an idea of what to do, then... go for it! On our vehicle, the hitch will mainly be used for a bike rack. I would recommend this hitch to anyone looking for a quality hitch and ease of installation! 265847

2016 Chevrolet Equinox

Got my new Draw- tite hitch a few days after it was ordered for my new 2016 Equinox. Installation took about an hour a good part of that time was cleaning out the bolt holes on the car, it had some extra paint in the holes. I pull out my tap set and ran a tap thru all the hole with a little oil on it. This clean them right up and every thing lined up well. Torqued bolts down and installed the lighting harness which was also easy. All the videos and manual on Etrailer helped to get all the tools etc ready ahead of time to make it all go smooth. Very Happy Customer 263742

2017 Chevrolet Equinox

Delivered promptly, in fine condition. Box was a bit torn, but that can't be helped considering the shape. I had heard horror stories about getting the bolts to come out of the square tube of the car, but using the supplied 'snake', the first one came through on the first try. Fought the second one for 2-3 minutes, but still was not much of a problem. The hitch fit perfectly on my 2017 Equinox, finished the install (2 people) in about 25 minutes. First use will to be to empty a storage unit no longer needed. After that primary use will be pulling a motorcycle. 301487

I purchased this product and within a week it was shipped to my house. This install took a round 2 hours to complete and was fairly easy. One thing I would recommend is buying the 1/2 wire tube brush to clean out the threaded holes. I had to really clean mine out along with some WD-40. Then I threaded the holes before the install with the extra 2 bolts provided in the packaging. Other than that, this was a very simple ans straight forward process. I am very happy with my purchase and will most likely buy again from etrailer. 265458

Will be used for a cargo carrier. It fit perfectly. I started installing it alone with the car on 8" blocks. After two hours of cleaning the under cairrage, bolt hole threads, and getting one side hung with the first bolt the other side resting on an over turned bucket,I crawled out from under the car. Called a Grandson to come over for help, 45 min. after his arrival the hitch was on and the car was off the blocks. Stress having help in your instructions, if you are a "know it all old guy" doing the installing. 288294

New car required a choice of hitches for my bike rack. Since I had found a great hitch at etrailer.com before, I went back to them again. I was pleased that they had a hitch to fit my new Chevy Equinox and that the #1 seller was a Draw Tite hitch, same brand as I had on my old car. The only change I made was to get the Class III hitch to allow me more uses to choose from, other than bike racks. I was not disappointed, this hitch fits perfectly and should be able to make my life easier. 286505

Hi George J I just installed the hitch on my 2016 chev equinox that I purchased from your company. everything went very smooth and all the parts were there. the wire to install the bolts worked excellent. what a great idea. tightened the bolts and nuts to the specs. provided. only one problem installation time shows 30 minutes. well being 70 years old it took me 30 minutes just to get up and down lol thanks Albert j (sorry no pictures do not know how to submit them) 279311

2015 Chevrolet Equinox

The box the hitch came in was questionable-both sides were exposed when delivered (needs better packaging). The hitch looks fine. The instructions need to be a little more clear and expanded. Explain the wires and how it works. Also on our 2015 Chevrolet Equinox there needs to be a better way to get the bolts to line up, the top bolt (on the vertical sections) is the worst to get started. After getting it installed it looks Good! 296273

Installed on 2016 Equinox and fits perfectly and looks great. Straight forward install (after reading all about it here online) and did it myself in about 45 minutes. Only odd thing was shipping took longer than anything else ever ordered - took five days. Usually their stuff gets here in like two. No biggie - saved money, able to have access now to both bike rack and rear cargo carrier and all under 100 bucks! Thanks 254018

Great product. Installation was a bit of a pain - not because of the product - but because of the corroded weld nuts that needed to be used. Would definitely recommend the wire brush to clean them out. Took me a very long time threading and un-threading as well as almost a whole can of WD-40. Should weld nuts have been clean, the installation would have been a piece of cake. Pulled our trailer without issue. Very satisfied! 291690

I purchased a Blue Ox tow bar, baseplate and Patriot portable backing system along with all of the wiring to hook up my 2016 GMC Terrain to my motorhome. Everything arrived the next day in excellent shape. I had one of the wiring packages arrive without the mounting hardware but with one quick call it was taken care of and I had the pieces the next day . I definitely order from etr aileron again. 257060

Item exactly as listed. The wiring harness information was very helpful. The video showed the tail lights coming off etc etc. and small helpful hint appeared and suggested looking for the connector from the factory in the spare tire compartment...dah dah!! it was there. Great video's. By the way, dealer wanted $329 for the parts and $229 to install. Etrailer got me on the road for less. Thanks Guys 264709

Product was delivered promptly and packed well. It was as described. What you didn't tell me was that the weld nuts on my wife's equinox were going to be so full of crud that I would have to go to advance and buy a tap and die set to clean them out before installing the hitch! What a pain that was. Hitch went right on after that though. 265455

Excellent fit. It took less than an hour to install. All of the bolt holes were in perfect alignment. Used a hydraulic jack to do the lifting and a paint can to hold it in place while I bolted it in place. With a small notch for the receiver in the factory trim plate, it looks factory installed. 264180

2011 Chevrolet Equinox

This trailer hitch is great at a good price. It went on easy after I cleaned all the bolt holes. This took a long time to clean the bolt holes. I had some rust in the upper left side. For a 2011 Chevy Equinox. 276164

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Can Fascia Door of 2011 GMC Terrain Be Reinstalled Once Hitch is Installed
  • All of the Class III receivers available for your 2012 Terrain are similar in the way they would sit in relation to the rear bumper of the vehicle. The primary difference between the Curt # 13591 and the Draw-Tite # 76028 is that the Draw-Tite model uses two additional connection points into the bottom of the frame member. Although both hitches share the same weight rating, having extra connection points to the vehicle frame is desirable. I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III receiver,...

  • Availability of a Trailer Hitch that Will Fit a 2011 Chevy Equinox
  • There are a couple of trailer hitches that have been confirmed to fit your 2011 Chevy Equinox, but the Draw-Tite hitch, # 76028, has not been one of those confirmed. instead, take a look at Curt trailer hitch # C12291. This is a Class II, 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch that Curt has confirmed as a fit for the 2011 Chevy Equinox. I have included a link to the installation details below. We can also use the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13591. This is a Class III, 2 inch trailer hitch. I have included...

  • Towing Capacity of 2012 GMC Terrain
  • According to the information contained in the owner's manual beginning on page 9-56 of the owner's manual, the tow capacity of the VEHICLE will depend on the engine size and whether or not the vehicle has brakes. Terrain models with the 2.4 L engine can tow up to 1500 lbs and with the 3.0 L, up to 3500 lbs. GMC states that if the trailer doesn't have brakes, the capacity is reduced to 1000 lbs. The capacity of the HITCH itself should be listed on a sticker affixed to the hitch, which...

  • It sounds like maybe your 2016 Chevy Equinox might not have the factory tow package. If it doesn't you will need a 4-way at the rear of the vehicle to power the Pilot Chevy Bow-Tie # CR-017C. The wiring harness I recommend for your vehicle is the # 118494.
