Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Toyota RAV4 - Draw-Tite

Today on this 2014 Toyota Rav4, we're going to show you part number 75766. This is a class three two-inch draw tight Max frame trailer hitch receiver. Next we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories for your hitch, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground, we have a measurement of 13 and a quarter inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about two and three quarter inches. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on our Rav4.

It's going to be a two-inch receiver opening. It fits underneath the bumper. It's just right behind this edge of the bumper here down below. It's got two large tie-down loops for your safety chains. It uses a five eighths hitch pin hole. This secondary hole is for a J pin anti-rattle device.

This hitch here also has a nice metal bracket to attach your electrical accessories to it, either a four-pole, seven-pole, or six-pole. The whole frame of the hitch is a round tube design. On the ends of the hitch, it reaches up around the trunk pan well and onto the frame. Use existing threaded holes. That was the driver's side.

We'll go ahead and check out how it fits around the exhaust on the passenger side. The hitch is built the same. It reaches up and goes into the frame and we've got plenty of room for exhaust. I can put my hand through here. It drags a little bit, but there is probably at least an inch of room around it. Let's go ahead and show you how to install the hitch.

We'll go ahead and take a look underneath our vehicle real fast to get an idea of what we're working with. First off, this tie-down hook for shipping purposes is going to be removed and permanently taken away from the vehicle. We're going to have to lower our exhaust a little bit to put the hitch up. Then this bracket right here, it's unbolted and it can even be flipped around to point the other way away from the hitch or it can be simply removed. All right, let's go ahead and remove the tie-down bracket. We'll be using a 17mm socket. Our hitch will use this hole here, but not this one. It will use this threaded hole here. It's a good idea to spray it down with some lubricant and go ahead and clean it out using a tube brush. We're using part number 814092. I cut the end off of mine and just stuck it in a drill. We'll go ahead and take one of the bolts that come with the hitch. We'll go ahead and thread it in. We'll get a quick test it and make sure it threads in okay. Once we're satisfied with these threads, we'll move over to the passenger side. Let's go ahead and lower our exhaust out of the way. I'm going to spray this down with some spray lubricant once again. Then just pry it off using a pry bar. This should give us plenty of room to work with. Let's go ahead and remove this rod. We'll go ahead and remove the bolt here and here using a 12mm socket. Once we have it removed, we can take it and flip it over and rotate it where it stays away from the center of the vehicle. Since at this point, I think it might be just as easy just to leave it off. Let's go ahead and clean up the threads on the passenger side here. Again, our hitch will use this started hole and this one, some more spray lubricant, and a tube brush. At this point, we're ready to install the hitch on our CRV. Let's go ahead and show you how the hardware works with the hitch. This is the bolt that we used earlier to test the threads. It also gets a conical tooth washer. Make sure your teeth in the washer always face towards the hitch. Basically that will install through the hitch like this. It's identical on both sides of the hitch. At this point, we can go ahead and put the hitch in position and loosely install the hardware. Definitely a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help hold it up while I get the bolt started. We'll get one bolt on each side started. Then we'll install the remaining bolts. With all our hardware loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts and we'll torque them down as specified in the instructions. To tighten down the bolts, we'll be using a 19mm socket. Also a three quarter inch will work as well. Now let's go ahead and put our exhaust back up. Spray down the rubber hanger one more time with some lubricant and put it back into place. With that, that will finish it for the install of part number 75766 on our 2014 Toyota Rav4. .

The hitch itself is VERY sturdy and arrived well packaged and protected. Installation was painless except for the need to have a torque wrench - luckily a neighbor let me borrow one and even crawled under the car to bolt it on with me. I was originally worried that I would need a ramp or a lift to jack the rear of the car up, but there was plenty of clearance so that wasn't needed. Oh - and I did have to slide the exhaust out of the little rubber bracket, but that turned out to be a piece of cake - you can do it with just your fingers. Great product - easy installation. 192112

I purchased this hitch after extensive review of various models online. etrailer.com had the most comprehensive website with instructions, product details, videos and made it easy to choose who to purchase from. I received my order quickly and installed it to my 2014 RAV4 in under 30 minutes with the assistance of a friend. The unit installed so easily I was ecstatic!! I am still in the market for my trailer and haven't been able to use the hitch yet, though I am confident that it will perform exactly as intended. 154028

This is a solid product and the second one I have bought. Installation is not difficult. I use this with a Thule bike carrier. I am pleased with this product and would recommend it. The only negative would be with the packaging. The box was not sturdy enough for the heavy metal hitch and came ripped open at the top and bottom. Fortunately all the hardware and instructions are taped to the unit so nothing was lost. 148044

Installed in less than 30 minutes by two of us. Did not have to drop the muffler - just had to pull it to the passenger side as far as it would go to slip in the torque wrench. Looks nice and tidy on my RAV4. 124281

  • For a hitch I would recommend you get a Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75766. This is a Class III hitch that would have more than enough capacity to tow your 2,000-3,000 lb trailer. Instructions attached. Next, you will need a ball mount and hitch ball, I would recommend you get the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900. For wiring you would want the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C56166. This will provide you with a 4-way to control the tail light functions of your taillights. I attached...

  • Recommended Bike Racks That Allow Full Cargo Area Access for 2014 Toyota Rav4
  • I have two good bike rack options for you, one that would involve installing a hitch, the other would mount to the spare tire. For full access to your rear door without the need to remove the bikes from the rack before opening the door, I'd recommend the Thule Vertex Swing, part # TH9031XT. The rack is capable of carrying up to four bikes, can swing out of the way to allow full cargo area access, and features an anti-rattle hitch pin to prevent the rack from moving around in the hitch....
