Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Ford Explorer - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2015 Ford Explorer we'll be installing the Draw-Tite class three 2" receiver tube hitch, part number 75710. Here's what our hitch will look like once it's installed. The only thing we really have exposed is the receiver tube, which is almost flush with the rear bumper, so we have nice easy access to the 5/8 pre-drilled pinhole on both sides and our chain hold down. The only other thing that we really have exposed is the round crosstube that connects the two side brackets to the frame. We have 400 pounds of tongue weight capacity and 4,000 pounds of towing capacity, unless we add a weight distribution hitch; then we have up to 500 pounds of tongue weight with 5,000 pounds of towing capacity. Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4".

From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 15". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. We'll now go ahead and install the hitch. Now to begin the install of our hitch we need to lower the exhaust. Before I remove the rubber isolators from the metal hangers to lower the exhaust we're going to put a safety strap underneath to help hold the weight of the exhaust so we can safely lower it. Now with my safety strap in place we'll go ahead and use a spray lubricant to spray on the rubber isolators to make it easier to remove from the metal hanger.

We have a total of three isolators we need to remove, one just above each muffler and one just forward of the rear axle. Now to remove the rubber isolator from the metal hanger you can use a pry bar, pliers, or if you have an exhaust hanger removal tool. Now once we have the rubber isolators removed we'll go ahead and use our safety strap to safely lower the exhaust. Now once we have the mufflers down and out of the way we need to remove the rear exhaust hangers. We have one on each side and there are two fasteners for each. Now, as we remove the hangers and hardware we're going to go ahead and set them aside, but make sure we hang on to them, as we'll need to reuse the rubber isolators with the hitch.

Now we need to remove the rubber isolators from the hanger. Just hit it with a little spray lubricant. Then I can take my pliers, slide it off, and we're going to take the hanger and set it aside as it will not be reinstalled, and reuse the rubber isolator. Now here on the hitch is a built-in attachment point for securing the rubber isolator. We have our bolt that will go into place. We'll slide on the rubber isolator, and then a flat washer and a lock nut.

Once it's in place we can go ahead and tighten it down. Now be careful not to overtighten because we don't want to smash the isolator. Now that lock nut's pretty tough. You may need to put something here into the hitch to help hold the carriage bolt in place. As you can see, we've got it nice and tight, but not too tight to smash the isolator. Now with this side down we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the other side. Now with our hitch ready we're going to move back to the vehicle. Here on the passenger side frame rail there's a pre-drilled hole or oval hole in the frame. This is going to become the rear attachment point for the new hitch and we're going to use a 1/2" carriage bolt and block in the frame. We'll use the 1/2" bolt leader to get them in position. We're going to use a reverse pull method, so we'll slide on the block and thread on the carriage bolt. I'll feed them both in the frame first and then pull the carriage bolt back down over the block to create the attachment point. Then once we have our hitch in place we can install the conical tooth washer and nut to secure the carriage bolt. Now our other four attachment points we're going to reuse the manufacturer's weld nuts in the frame where we removed the exhaust hanger, installing the new 12mm bolt and 1/2" conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch as it goes through the hitch and into the weld nut. We're now ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. We'll install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place. Here on the passenger side we'll take the bolt leader from our carriage bolt and feed it through the attachment point first. Then we'll take the hitch up to the frame. Then we can go ahead and thread our bolt into the weld nut and it will hold the hitch in place. Now with the two bolts in place reach remove the pull wire and install the conical tooth washer and nut. Quick tech tip: if we put the conical tooth washer on putting some side pressure, it will help hold the carriage bolt in place so we don't push it back up into the frame while we install the nut. Once the nut's installed we'll then go ahead and move over to the driver side and install the two bolt. Now with all our hardware in place we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Next we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Just like that our hitch is installed. Next we'll go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Now once our exhaust is back in place we can go ahead and remove the safety strap. Just like that we've completed the install of our Draw-Tite class three 2" receiver tube hitch, part number 75710, on our 2015 Ford Explorer. .

2011 Ford Explorer

I bought a new 2011 Ford Explorer, I need to pull a small utility trailer. I bought this hitch from etrailer, this was so easy to install. It took about an hour to install by myself. Reading the directions, they were very easy to understand. The tips were very helpful too, soap was a very helpful tip to get the rubber isolators off the exhaust. I lowered the exhaust in the three places, and it fit perfectly. One thing I needed to do that was a pain was to do as they said, I should have tightened the bolts to # 6, 7, and 8 before I raised the hitch onto the car. I thought it only needed to be in place before installing. Make sure to put on the rubber isolators onto #6, 7, and 8 and tighten the set up before raising the hitch onto the car (it was a pain to tighten while hitch was up on the car. The hitch looks great, it is not ugly and works great. See attached pics. 24664

2011 Ford Explorer

Installed by one person (me) onto a 2011 Explorer Limited. Fit is great, and installation, even with just one person, took about an hour (I have an electric impact wrench which makes it go MUCH faster than with a standard ratchet). Just back your Explorer up onto wheel ramps, and you're good to go. This leaves your floor jack as a handy exhaust support. To hoist the hitch into place, I used the mufflers to support the hitch while I started the bolts into the weld nuts in the frame. You're going to need 18 and 19 mm sockets, and a pry bar or very large screw driver to perform this install. BTW, shipping time was reasonable and eTrailer's post-sale customer service was exceptional. 86711

2015 Ford Explorer

Bought a new Ford Explorer 2015, the dealer wanted to charge me over $500 to put a new hitch and wire harness on. I went to U-Haul, they wanted almost $400. I ordered a hitch here, and wire harness. Cost was just over $200 with shipping (expedited). I put the tow bar and wire harness on in less than an hour. I will most definitely come back here and buy more items for hauling bikes, etc. Good product, highly recommend, easy to install. 162485

2016 Ford Explorer

The hitch for my 2016 Ford Explorer was exactly as pictured. The installation video and written instructions made this an easy job. It took about an hour to complete and went just as I was told it would. I watched the video first and it made the job so much easier to understand. No drilling or modifications to the vehicle at all. Just bolt it on! Excellent product. 265266

Rather than write a product review, which is very good, I want to write a report on the excellent level of service received from etrailer. Great upfront information, tracking data, and especially the follow up. I have never received the level of complete service on a vehicle accessory plus details installation instruction that were easy to follow. I received the hitch yesterday and installed in by myself in under one hour. As I need additional accessories I will rely on etrailer. Thanks. Your service is what service should be. William R. Very satisfied with this product. Received it in 2 days and installed it in a little more than an hour. The keys to me were spray lube on the rubber muffler hangers allowed me to remove w my hands and a breaker bar to remove the bolts holding the hanging brackets. The videos were helpful but made me wish for a lift and an impact wrench. My only criticism is that the cable ties were too short as another customer stated. It is mounted and I pulled a trailer today, everything is fine. Just an aside, the local Ford dealer quoted $1500 - $1800 for factory parts and $300 - $350 for after market install, I did it for much less. Very satisfied. 242782

Hitch was a little delayed getting out because it was back ordered, but etrailer did a great job communicating the delay. Opening the hitch, the first thing I noticed was the welds where just sloppy. Clearly either done quickly, or done by someone that had no idea what they where doing. Secondly the installation process was simple enough, however the spacer provided was incorrectly stamped, and the bolt would not fit through the hole. Had to file down the sides to get the bolt to fit. Overall the quality of this product is second rate for sure. No issue with etrailer, just not a quality product. 85610

I initially ordered the wrong hitch and contact etrailer by email immediately to address the issue. I had nothing but excellent service. The correct hitch was ordered and the incorrect hitch was removed. I received the ordered items promptly. I am completely happy with the service I received. I have yet to put the part on at this time. Thank you for such great service. I look forward to installing and using the hitch. I will highly recommend etrailer to my friends and family. 32803

Ordered hitch and wiring on Sunday. The order was shipped fast and installed by me in less than an hour before the next weekend. Searching for the hitch and wiring harness was made easy by the etrailer website. The videos were spot-on in making the install easy. 83828

Very easy product to install. Good instructions. Comes with all hardware needed. I also bought the plug and play T connector for the lights. Took 30 seconds to install that. I had my 8 year old daughter help me put it on the explorer. It took us about 2 hours with hand tools. Requires 18 mm to remove factory bolts and a 19 mm to install new bolts. Also need and 11\16 for the exhause carriage bolts. We had fun installing the hitch together. 259771

Watch the quick youtube instalation video because this thing is VERY easy to install once you've seen how. Big bolts mean you'll probably need a set of 1/2" wrenches, and a second set of hands helps when it comes to actually lifting the hitch into place. I'm a welder, and I can attest that this hitch is very well built and very strong. And as important, it looks good once it's mounted. A++ 162907

Very Happy with Service and Product. Installation was easy, directions adequate, could of used a little more detail as some additional thinking and common sense needed to figure out best way. Installation was under 30 minutes, but I am just that good. I had a lift and air tools that most people would not. I personally would have changed exhaust hanger design but what you have will work. 237780

Removing the muffler from the rubber mounts was not easy. I tried soapy water for a long time then went to silicone. Forget the soapy water...go silicone. This is definitely a job done much more easily with two people. But, once in place and secure it looks great and works great. I would definitely recommend over paying close to $500 for the Ford installed version. 35293

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Differences/Similarities in Hitches Offered for 2013 Ford Explorer Sport
  • The Draw-Tite # 75710 and the Curt # C13100 hitch is almost identical in appearance, will install in the same manner, and has the exact same weight capacity. Both of the hitches are protected by the same limited lifetime warranty. As far as quality and durability goes, I have no preference between Draw-Tite and Curt Hitch. The Curt hitch does use a base coat under powder coating. Curt's powder coat is typically a bit more shiny, but that's the only discernible difference. In my opinion,...

  • Which Draw Tite Hitch 75710 or 76034 for a 2016 Ford Explorer
  • The two Draw Tite hitches part # 76034 and # 75710 are both confirmed fits for your 2016 Ford Explorer. Since the part # 76034 costs less and has more capacity I would recommend it easily for you. Essentially they are the same except one is rated higher and costs less. Your liftgate will still function just fine. You just might have to run your foot under either side of the hitch opening instead. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118540 as it is a confirmed fit as well. I...

I would recommend using Loctite Blue Stick Threadlocker, part # LT37643, which you would apply to the threads of the bolts. You will want to make sure to use a torque wrench and torque down all bolts as specified in the instructions. With a few basic tools you will be able to install the hitch in your driveway.
