Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Chevrolet Equinox - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2017 Chevrolet Equinox we'll be installing the Draw-Tite class two trailer hitch receiver, part number 36408. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, it's a nice clean look. It's all pretty much hidden behind our bumper cover here. The only part that's exposed is our actual class two 1-1/4" receiver opening and our safety chain loops, and about a foot or so of our frame of the hitch itself. These safety chain loops are nice and easy to use.

You'll have complete access all the way around them to hook on your safety chains in any direction if you need. We have our industry-standard 1/2" diameter hitch pinhole here off to the side to secure whatever hitch-mounted accessory we may have. This hitch features a 300 pound max tongue weight rating and a 3,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating. Now this hitch is nice and recessed behind our bumper cover so when we're loading cargo into our hatch area we don't have to worry about running our shins or our knee into this and potentially causing injuries to ourselves. Now unfortunately we can't reinstall our bumper cover door here that hid where the factory hitch would have been, but that's not a big deal because our hitch is aesthetically pleasing, especially when we have this collar that's welded on on the outside edge of it to give it a nice finished look. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 5" from the center of the 1/2" diameter hitch pinhole to the rearmost part of the back bumper, and about 15" from the ground to the top of the class two 1-1/4" receiver opening. Here's what our hitch comes with.

We have our hitch and our installation hardware here. Now you may notice that we have six bolts here that will go into weld nuts that already exist in the vehicle frame. In some applications you'll need all six. Then in some applications like ours that we have here today, we only need four. We can set two of these aside.

If we go over here, for our applications like ours that don't have those existing weld nuts, we have some carriage bolts that will go into spacer plates. They will be fish-wired into our vehicle's rear bumper support and be held in place with these nuts, and then two of our conical tooth washers here. Now that we've gone over what's included, we'll show you how to get it installed. We'll begin the installation by removing this door that covers when your factory hitch would be. There's a couple tabs on it. You just push those tabs up, push down, and there's four more tabs at the top.

Push those in, and the door comes down and we can set it aside. Now I'll take one of our pull wires here. You see there's two holes in the center line of our bumper. Go into the round hole, come out the side of our bumper tube that's closest to it. In this case we'll work on the driver side, so we'll go out the driver side, come out right here. Slide on a spacer plate. Stick that inside the bumper, thread on a carriage bolt, push it in, pull it on down. Remove your pull wire. Go to the other hole. Now with an extra set of hands we'll raise our hitch on up. Hold it in place. Conical tooth washers with the teeth going towards the hitch. Put on our nut. Get one started really good. Do the other side here, same process. Once we have these two secure, we don't need to support our hitch anymore. Now we'll get our bolts ready for the side. Drop on a conical tooth washer, teeth facing away. Turn the bolt head towards the hitch. Then we get these started. There's two bolts on both sides. We'll repeat the same process on the other side. Now that we have all of our bolts in place we can begin the process of tightening them using a 19mm socket. Now for the two nuts in the middle here, an extension with a wobble socket on it will be really handy in order to get these in position. Now that all of our hardware is tightened down, we can torque them to the amount specified in the instructions. I just want to point out that if you have to use carriage bolts in the middle here versus the bolts that go into the weld nuts, those are a different torque amount than the ones that go in the weld with that, so just pay attention in the instructions when you're torquing. That completes our installation of the Draw-Tite class two trailer hitch receiver, part number 36408, on our 2017 Chevrolet Equinox.

Great Hitch. My wife and I purchased this hitch specifically for mounting a bike rack on our 2012 Chevy Equinox 2LT. I ordered it Aug 9th and received it Aug 11th via 2 day shipping. There are six easy bolts that were extremely easy to install. The hardest part was holding it up. Strongly recommend you install with a partner so there's no chance of stripping or breaking bolts from stress. Some models do not already have all the holes needed but there is extra hardware for this. Fortunately ours was equipped with all 6 holes and I installed it in about 25 minutes with my wife's assistance. It's very stable and neat. Also, ensure you do it right and torque it within. Very happy with this purchase. 283222

installed this Hitch (#36408) on my 2011 GMC Terrain the next day (7/6/11) and all went very well except that I had to bend the passenger-side upright support about one inch outward, in order to fit in place and bolt in. The hitch may have been dropped on that side during shipping and was sticking out from the carton, but I was able to straighten it out to fit...all is perfect! 19410

Extremely fast delivery and excellent communication from Etrailer folks. Directions need minor correction. We have a 2013 chevy equinox and we needed to use the pull wire tool to attach center bolts as the equinox bumper did not have threaded holes ,need to attach as if bumper was from a Saturn. Maybe when GM dumped the Saturn line, they are using some old bumpers on their Chevys and not telling anyone??? But other than that ( and threading the bolts through the bumper can be alittle tricky, i used thicker wire than provided and was alot easier to do), the hitch is farely easy to install and is quality . Installed draw-tite 1 1/4# receiver on 2007 Saturn view. 1. the "piano wire gizmo" for threading bolts through bumber was cut way too short. It would not even fit from bolt hole to end of bumper. Should have been about 1 foot longer just to be workable. I extended with extra piano wire and everything pulled through fine. 2. Middle bolts were almost impossible without tiny hands. Luckily my wife is good at many things, and her smaller hands were able to fit in to attach nuts to bolts. Thought it might be easier if bolts were slightly longer (1/4 inch). Just a little too close fitting both washer and nut. 3. Youtube video is a must. Watched 2 of them for about 7 minutes total. Really did a good job letting you know what had to be done. 7 minutes saved a lot of time on the install. Overall: Very pleased with etrailer and hitch. A longer threading gizmo would have made for an excellent rating instead of a very good. I would definitely use them again and would recommend them to a friend. 20501

I purchased the Draw-tite for my 2013 Terrain to use with a small trailer for yard work etc. I was surprised how quick the part showed up and the free shipping was great. I watched the video on installing it which helps. They indicated using a round wire brush to clean out the weldnuts and this is a must, especially if you live in the North. I spent time cleaning them and sprayed some oil in them and then ran a bolt in each nut to make sure the bolts would go in easily when I started the final ass'y. I used a floor jack to hold the hitch in place while I put in the four side bolts. I then pulled it out and installed the center bolts. I didn't tighten the bolts until I had all 6 in place. The product looks great on the SUV, it's tucked under the bumper so all you see is the receiver for the ball & drawbar. 242765

I searched the internet and found a great place (etrailer.com) to order a vehicle hitch, with respect to Service, Delivery and Value. All of the staff at etrailer far exceeded my highest expectations in all respects. On Thursday afternoon (June 30, 2011) I placed my order, with a 3 day holiday in between (July 4th/Independence Day) and received the Hitch & Wiring Kit on Tuesday July 5, 2011...5days!... How can you beat that!...Pictures may follow! Etrailer.com has a video (on line) to assist you with the installation of every hitch and wiring kit...this company has their act together! The follow up after the sale is also great! Thanks!...etrailer... A happy customer!...Berny D. 18935

Very pleased with the Drawtite hitch and alternate wiring harness I ordered for our 2011 Equinox. The hitch install took less than fifty minutes and I was pleased that everything lined up and bolted together with no difficulties. The wiring harness installed in less than 10 minutes. Reviewing the Video's on your web site were a huge help when it came to the wire harness. By ordering everything from your company saved us 400.00 from a dealer install. 255488

Great Deal I ordered this receiver on the 9th and it was here on the 12th. Free shipping(and fast). Didn't get home from work until 8:30pm and had the hitch installed by 9:15. Looks great and of course a good name in hitches. Super easy to install by yourself. Came with the pin. Have yet to install the wiring harness, but I primarily purchased this for transporting bicycles and using other receiver type accessories. Having large metric tools will help with the install, but not absolutely necessary, a 3/4" socket with a 1/2" drive will work well. I only wish I had this option for my last car years ago. Thanks!!!! 5424

I purchased this hitch receiver for a 2013 GMC Terrain. Installation is very simple but the included thread wire is short. It is 24 inches from the bumper frame opening to the bumper bolt location. There are 2 openings much closer but the hardware is too big to fit through them. Have a piece of bailing wire (some what rigid) handy and this is easily remedied. The fascia cover needs to be removed as with the Equinox but it cannot be replaced after installation. It took me 20 minutes on my back in the cold and looks like a factory installed part. Excellent fit and application, perfect for a do it yourselfer. 67618

Just purchase a new Equniox 2017, I had bids in at $400-$500 to get the hitch installed. I decided to go with this purchase because of price and the video's which show me exactly how to do it. One trailer place quoted me $100 to do the install of the wire harness ... it took me 20 minutes... that means he was charging me $300 an hour to do the electrical and then he wanted $10 per bolt to do the install of the hitch. I forwarded them your Web site address and told them they should start doing business with you! They Email me back thanking me for the information! 321859

I ordered the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for a 2017 Equinox and it shipped quickly and instructions were very clear for the installation. The Hitch also came with two 1/2 wire bolt leaders and I had ordered an additional one as well. The bolt leaders needed to be connected together to reach from the opening to the guide holes for the bolts. Once connected, that extended the length and it worked perfectly to pull the two center bolts into place. All bolts and nuts fit perfectly. The 1 1/4 hitch works great with my bike carrier and any small carts that I need to pull. 316536

Installation was a Breeze, no help, completed myself. Product ultra durable, easy to install, looks great. Pleased with how everything lined up well. Pull wire to feed block and bolt through bumper frame needs to be 6" longer. Only complaint. Used a coat hanger to add length. Would recommend if you want a hitch...and don't want to get ripped off at a dealer. 81957

Nice hitch and seems easy to put on ('07 Pontiac Torrent). A warning though - those nice holes in the frame w/ welded nuts can get pretty rusted in 3-4 years. I've been working on cleaning them out for over a week now. And the hitch doesn't come with the tube brush that is used in the instructions (not that it would help - I've ruined 4 brushes already). I'd recommend buying the proper bolt and testing out the threads on the frame before purchase. Otherwise, the hitch fits nicely and was received very shortly after purchase. 21460

Trailer hitch fit perfectly. Arrived promptly and in good condition. Bolts were wrong for my 05 Vue, though. Hitch came with 1/2" bolts, welded nuts on car were 7/16". Instruction illustrations were accurate, written directions could have pointed out a key step -- to make sure washer and carriage bolt were fished through the bumper separately -- the washer wouldn't go through if the bolt was already inside. Clearly shown in the pic, but not described in written directions. Otherwise, smooth sailing. 18483

I shopped 4 sites for the best value on this hitch and the wiring kit for my 2011 Equinox. eTrailer had the best price and free shipping, and I learned soon after ordering that they provide EXCELLENT service. The hitch arrived so fast I hadn't gotten motivated enough yet to get down under the vehicle to install it, but when I did, the installation (hitch and wiring kit) was easy and quick thanks to the very clear instructions provided. I'm very happy to have done business with eTrailer. 10954

I've used etrailer a few times in the past. This is a first rate company and I would recommend this company to anyone. Always quick shipping/and top quality parts. This review is for the DrawTite hitch and wire harness for the 2014 GMC Terrain. Hitch fits perfect just like factory and the wire harness plugs in to available harness. Took 30 seconds to hook the wiring up, and about 30 mins to install and torque the hitch. Great product, Great company. 150336

Can't install per directions A nice hitch that fit into place fine, but it is impossible to install per the provided directions and the pull wire provided. The pull wire was too short and too flimsy to even feed the heavy bolt - resulting in the bolt getting lost inside the bumper. This was frustrating to say the least. I was able to complete the job using an electrician's fish tape. The electrical hookup was easy, but the hitch was a real pain! 398

by: Darrell M.09/30/2011

The hitch arrived on time. Instillation was a little more difficult than I expected. Probably because I was working on the ground and not from a lift and I'm old. It just took a little longer. Electrical connections required more body panel removal than I'm use to, but other than that all went well. It looks good on the car and my boat is very happy. I'll recommend you to all of my friends......both of them. 24928

Hitch installed perfectly! No issues what so ever. I don't know who invented the wiring harness but they are a genius! I've never wired up a car so easily. It literally took me maybe 10 minutes start to finish. 130873

I first ordered a drawtite trailer hitch for my 2004 Saturn Vue, so that I could install a hitch mounted bike carrier. I received the hitch the next day by UPS! It fits perfect using the existing holes in the vehicle frame. The only problem I encountered were the corroded threaded holes on my frame. I had to use a 12mm thread tap to clean out 7 years of rust. After that it bolted up perfectly! 23031

Video was not accurite for 2012 Terrain. Brackets were as shown in picture on sides shown. Also written directions say that all bolts are 1/2 inch. Video says ,correctly , that bolts in frame are 12mm. My Terrain has nuts already welded in frame for all six bolt locations. Had to buy 12mm tap to clean out holes. After figuring out the bolt size mix -up things went smoothly. 189529

The product was delivered on time- the items(hitch & wire harness) and instructions were excellent and installation was simple and straight forward. The only issue we had was badly corroded threaded holes on the side of the the frame of this 2012 Equinox. Thread chasing corrected issue all four holes. The installation video was quite helpful. Congratulations on a job very well done!! 130413

On the 2011 Equinox you do not have to fish any nuts or washers the nuts are all welded on the inside of the frame. if you are working alone get some blocking or a small jack to hold the hitch in place wwhile you thread all the bolts loosley, after they are all in place tighten to the specificationsprovide with the hitch. total install took 20 minutes everything fit perfectly . 31102

Product arrived very quickly and was exactly as advertised. Website video on installation was very helpful. Hitch went on very smoothly - only time consuming thing was cleaning out the existing car frame weld nuts (6 year old car). However having that done to insure the hitch bolts provided would thread into and tighten properly made the actual hitch install very smooth. 63552

Ordered on a Saturday, was notified of shipment (with upgraded status) on Sunday, arrived on Tuesday. Awesome shipping department! Took three hours to clean rust and corrosion from the weld nuts on the vehicle frame (NOT etrailer's fault). The hitch bolted up in about 20 mins, with no additional hands. Once again, great shipping, and equally awesome product. Thank you! 33832

This is the second hitch receiver I have purchased from etrailer. Ordering is simple. Delivery is quick. Great service. The only problem I have with this hitch is that the leader designed to pull the blots through the car frame are is too short. I had to fabricate an extension cable just to be able to reach the bolt holes. Otherwise, this is a great product. 132927

The videos were great in helping us to install the hitch. However, the bolts that were sent with the product were too long and had to be replaced to get the hitch put on securely. The box the unit came in was also destroyed in shipping. The product was not damaged but could have been easily. Overall, the hitch looks great and works, I would purchase it again. 20075

Like the hitch real well, only had one problem with installation, my 2012 Chevy Equinox does not come with welded in nuts for the bracket directly above the hitch, the mounting hardware comes with the bolts and washers for this and a wire to feed it down the tube to put it in place but the wire is not long enough so I had to add more wire to get it in place. 50583

Trailer hitch arrived in a few days and fit my vehicle perfectly. The only trouble I had was cleaning the rust from the nuts on my vehicle. After cleaning the rust, the installation was a breeze. YouTube videos provide clear direction and are worth the ten minutes to watch. Hitch is now installed and works perfectly in carrying my bike rack and 3 bikes 256021

Extremely quick service. Ordered on Tuesday and it was delivered on Thursday. A friend just put it on my vehicle today and said it took him only about 30 minutes from start to finish, so now I'm good to go on mounting a bike rack to transport my bike to the south for the winter. Great company to deal with and would definitely purchase from them again. 23630

From start to finish this was by far one of the best shopping experiences. The site was easy to navigate, prices were great and delivery was fast and hassle free and I got my order the day after Christmas (ordered on December 23rd) my order arrived with clear instructions and all necessary hardware. I would highly recommend ordering from etrailer. 167562

Hitch itself was awesome! And I love the videos on website that show you how to install it for every type of car. Only thing I would ask is that you make the fish wire piece for pulling bolt through bumper a little bit longer as mine was well short. I had to fashion my own piece which took some time but other than that great product and great company. 137942

Purchased the trailer hitch for our 2013 Terrain and it went on like a charm. Instructions were very CLEAR and easy to follow. Even attaching the light wiring was far easier than I anticipated. We liked it so much that we have gotten rid of our old bike carrier and purchased a hitch mounted bike carrier from you. It also fits perfectly. 287479

The supplied wire was not long enough to reach the end of channel. My husband is a tool & die maker so extended the wire and then it hung up. Also the backer plates would only go in one way because the square was not cut in the exact center. Way more than 40'minutes to install. Took about two hours, not sure we would ever try that again. 229803

quality is excellent however it's not really a one man easy installation. The fishtails that where included should be longer and have a little more strength to come in from the end of the frame rail. Had to resort to expandable foam to hold the carriage bolts in place until the wife could get the nuts started. After that it was easy. 200282

The product was shipped so quickly, arrived on time, the box was broken but no damage was found, it was very easy to assemble, it took me about 30 minutes to install it, I did alone, I recommed to have somebody else to help, would be easier. The quality of the componentes is very good, I am very satisfied with this purchase. 47620

Talk about an easy install. Both the hitch and the wiring to about 20 minutes and most of that time was gathering up the few tools I needed. It was a 1 person job for sure and it couldn't be simpler. If you can't install one of these hitches and wiring, you probably shouldn't check your own tire pressure either. 9563

Great order procesing and very fast shipping . They keep me informed from the very start to the end. I really liked that they had a video of the instalation of my hitch. It was so easy to install you would have to be helpless to install this hitch. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT AND etrailer. 12491

Hitch was exactly as described. Fit was excellent. I installed it without help so it took a little longer than the 40 minutes expected time. Had I another person to help it would have taken considerably less than 40 minutes. As an additional comment, shipping was very quick and professional. 181220

eTrailer shipped the Draw-Tite hitch right away and I received it within the week. The installation video was great and accurate...it only took about 15-20 minutes for me to install the hitch on my Chevy Equinox. Everything went "without a hitch" and I am no longer without a hitch! 12291

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • What is the Towing Capacity of a 4 Cylinder 2014 Chevy Equinox
  • I found an online copy of the owners manual for the 2014 Chevy Equinox from Chevy and have the towing information for you. The models with the 2.4 liter motor have a gross trailer weight capacity of 1,000 pounds if the trailer does not have brakes or 1,500 pounds if the trailer does have brakes. The gross combined weight rating, which is the most the vehicle and trailer can weigh when loaded with cargo, fuel, passengers, and any accessories is 5,787 pounds for front wheel drive models...

  • Towing Capacity of 2012 Chevy Equinox
  • In my research, I found that the towing capacity for models with the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine is 1500 lbs, while models equipped with the 3.0L 6 cylinder engine have a 3500 lb towing capacity. I've confirmed this information with the owner's manual.

  • Bolt Size Used for Weldnuts for Installing Hitch on a Chevy Equinox
  • What we can do is provide you with the bolt size that is used to install the part # 36408 that you referenced and you can find a tap at a local hardware store to clean the threads out if you think they are too corroded. The bolt size is M12 CL8.8. I attached an install video and couple help links for cleaning weldnuts for you to check out as well.

  • 1-1/4 inch Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Chevy Equinox
  • For your 2017 Chevy Equinox we do have a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch by Draw Tite. For that you would want the part # 36408 which I attached an install video for you to check out. Normally we would recommend the Class III hitch # 76028 that you referenced since this size is more popular and has more capacities but I can understand in your situation wanting the Class II 1-1/4 hitch.

  • Which Trailer Hitch Will Be Least Visible on a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox
  • All the hitches we offer for your 2011 Chevrolet Equinox have similar designs, and they are actually going to fit in nearly the same location. There is a center panel in the center of your vehicle bumper that will be removed for the hitch installation, and the hitch receiver opening will fit up into the space that is left when the panel is removed. Because of this, the hitches for your vehicle are all going to be mostly hidden. The same hitches that fit your vehicle also fit some similar...

  • Does Draw-Tite # 36408 Include Everything Needed To Tow a Trailer With 2012 Chevy Equinox
  • The Draw-Tite Class II 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 36408, will fit a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. It is the trailer hitch and pin and clip. To be able to tow with this hitch you will still need to purchase the recommended ball mount, hitch ball and the wiring harness for lighting the trailer lights. I am including links to the installation instructions and a install video of the hitch being installed on a 2010 Equinox (same on the 2012 model). The wiring harness for your Equinox would be the...

The receiver locations are identical and the crosstubes and mounting brackets are hidden behind the fascia/bumper. • Availability of an Anti-Rattle Device For a 1-1/4 Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Saturn Vue
  • Hitch, ball mount, and/or accessory rattle can be annoying and it is a common ailment. Luckily, there is a cure. First, you can make sure that your trailer has the correct tongue weight. Tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight when it is loaded and ready to tow. If tongue weight is correct, you can use an anti-rattle device.
