Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2002 Buick LeSabre

Today we are going to be installing Draw-Tite hitch part number 36309 on a 2002 Buick LeSabre. This hitch application will also apply to the Hidden Hitch part number 90140. Okay, underneath the vehicle, we are going to go ahead and take a look at the frame rails and point out the mounting location for the trailer hitch. Looking at the passengers side frame rail, you can see we have got the exhaust here that is mounted to this bracket here at the end of the frame. We are going to need to lower that down. The weld nut that this bolt is attached to, which is holding our exhaust bracket on, is going to provide our rear-most attaching point for the trailer hitch. And that is going to be the same on both sides of the vehicle. Our more forward attaching point we are actually going to have to drill. So what we will do is put the hitch up in position with our rear-most attaching point, and then we will use the hitch as a template to drill the hole out on each side.

So the first thing we want to do is go ahead and lower the exhaust down here on the passengers side. Okay, you can see here on the drivers side, our weld nut has a lot of corrosion built up in there, and when we try to install our 10-millimeter bolt, it is not wanting to start at all. In fact, it almost seems like the bolt is too big. It is a common misconception, again, when the weld nut has got a lot of build-up in there. So, to go ahead and clean that out, we are going to use a spray lubricant, like a WD-40, and go ahead and soak that up, let it sit for a second. And then you can take a wire brush I am using actually the top of a battery terminal cleaner here. And just run that in there a few times. What that is going to do is help loosen up all that debris and road grime that is in there. And then you can repeat that process a few times. And then once we have got that all nice and loosened up, we can actually go ahead and take our bolt now, and we just need to get it started - use our ratchet or our air gun, and run it in and out a few times. And that will help to further clean it out. Now that we have got the weld nuts thoroughly cleaned out, we can go ahead and hang the hitch up by those weld nuts using, again, the new 10-millimeter hardware that is provided with our installation kit.

We are just going to snug these bolts up for the time being, just long enough to get our holes drilled out - because, at least here on the passengers side, we are going to need to bring this bolt back down, because our exhaust bracket is going to need to go back up. Next, we are going to go ahead and drill our holes out. I am going to start by using a 1/4-inch drill bit to drill a pilot hole, and then we are going to enlarge them to 1/2 inch. Okay, if you are having trouble over here on the passengers side trying to get your drill bit up around the exhaust, I recommend using an extra-long drill bit. Again, I am going to start off with a 1/4-inch and then use a 1/2-inch one after that. Now that we have got our holes drilled out, we want to fish our 1/2-inch carriage-bolt-and-block assembly in through the frame and down through the hole that we just drilled. To do that, the instructions state to enlarge one of these oblong holes here at the forward side of the frame to get our hardware in place. But on this particular model, we have actually got here on the side of the frame a very large access hole that we can use. Our hardware fits perfectly through there. So I am actually going to be using a 1/2-inch bolt leader here that we do sell here at etrailer.com, and I will feed it through the hole that we just drilled. And we will bring it out the access hole. Next we will take our block and feed in onto our bolt leader here, and then we will take our carriage bolt and wrap the threads of it with our bolt leader. And then we will just take and feed them through the hole. And we will be attaching that bolt with the lock washer and hex nut. Okay, and then we will repeat that procedure for the passengers side, as well.

Okay, next we want to take our exhaust bracket and remove it from the rubber hanger. What we will be using is, again, the new exhaust bracket, which is provided with the installation kit. What we are going to do is, the square hole is going to be fed onto the rubber hanger with the carriage bolt that is provided. We are just going to slide that through here, feed that through. And we will attach that with the locking flange nut that is provided, again, with the installation kit. We are going to tighten that down, but we want to make sure we do not overtighten. It is a lock nut, so it will stay in place. Okay, that should be good enough there. Again, we want it just enough where it is tight, but not too tight where it will not still allow the rubber hanger to rotate on its own. Next, we are going to go ahead and torque down our 1/2-inch carriage bolts. You want to check with your directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each of the individual bolts. And again, if you do happen to have a model that has dual exhaust, obviously you are going to want to repeat both of these procedures for both sides of the vehicle. Okay, now I am going to go ahead and pull the bolt back out of the rear-most attaching point. And we will go ahead and reinstall our exhaust. And we want the bracket where the carriage bolt is facing up, and then, obviously, this flat piece resting against the bottom of the hitch. What this is going to do is, it is going to provide the additional clearance we need to make sure that the exhaust system does not rattle against the hitch. Okay, and then we can go ahead and torque our 10-millimeter bolts down now. Okay, and now that we have got all our bolts torqued down, our installation is complete. This will conclude the installation of Draw-Tite hitch part number 36309 on a 2002 Buick LeSabre.

I called etrailer to make sure I was getting the right hitch. It was sent out the same day and got it on day 2. The installation was a piece of cake. There installation videos are a big help. I knew just what to expect with no surprises. I also ordered the 1/2" Bolt Leader used to fishwire bolts through the frame of vehicles. one nifty tool for only 95 cents. I would definitely buy from them again. Highly recommended. 143727

Review of Item 36309 - eTrailer: Excellent - Draw-Tite Hitch: Excellent - Instructions: Good to very good: there was some sort of electronic box (anti-lock controller?) blocking one of the frame rail access holes. I had to make my own. But, got it done. One suggestion: eTrailer should throw-in a bolt leader/fish wire at no extra cost as I didn't realize I needed one and struggled without it. 37325

I got a hitch for my 2007 Buick it installed quick and easy. I also ordered the wiring kit too. All parts came very quickly neatly packed with no damage to anything. The hitch installed just like the installation video showed. Very simple to do. The wiring harness also installed very easily. I'd like to thank, Brad E., George J., and Katie H., for a great on-line shopping experiance. 15705

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2008 Ford Taurus
  • There are hitches available that would fit either your 2011 Hyundai Santa fe or 2008 Ford Taurus, but the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36309 that you referenced will not fit either. For your Santa Fe you would want the Draw-Tite part # 75684. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118415. For your Taurus you would want the Draw-Tite part # 75299. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118447. For a ball mount, hitch ball, and pin and clip, I would recommend the etrailer Ball...

  • Do I Modify My Auto Level Housing to Install a Draw-Tite Hitch # 36309 on my 2000 Buick Le Sabre
  • In order to install this Draw-Tite Receiver Hitch, part # 36309, you will need to remove the rearmost fastener which secures the load leveling control housing to the frame rail and discard it. You will then trim the load leveling control housing around where the previously removed fastener was. See the picture to the right for further clarification. Some other items you may need: Draw Bar # 36063 Ball # 19258 or 19256 Trailer Wiring # 119176KIT

  • Trailer Hitch, Bike Rack, and Roof Rack Recommendations for a 2000 Buick LeSabre
  • For the 2000 Buick LeSabre, the Draw-Tite, # 36309, and Hidden Hitch, # 90140, trailer hitches are the same as they are made by the same company. The more economical hitch is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 36309 because it does not include a drawbar, hitch pin, and clip like the Hidden Hitch. If you need a drawbar, pin, and clip, go with the Hidden Hitch. I have included a link to the installation details and an installation video below. Instead of a trailer hitch, another option would...

  • Trunk Mount Bike Rack For a 2004 Buick LeSabre
  • Though there are some manufacturers that make a 4-bike trunk mount, none of the manufacturers we carry make one. Having 4-Bikes on a trunk mount rack is a little on the extreme side and could be potentially dangerous and would put a lot of stress on the mounting points on the vehicle. The most bikes I recommend carrying on a truck mount is 3. I recommend the Thule Raceway 3, # TH9002PRO. I own this rack myself and it is by far the easiest rack to install/remove that I have ever used....

  • How to Select a Hitch, Ball Mount and Trailer Wiring for a 2000 Buick LeSabre
  • The appropriate choice of ball mount for use with your 2000 Buick LeSabre will depend on the particular trailer you are towing. You want to choose a ball mount that has the necessary rise (or drop) to match the heights of your tow vehicle and trailer. Safe towing requires that your trailer frame be level with the ground when hitched. Please refer to the included article concerning how to select a ball mount. I have also included a link to our product page for 1-1/4 inch Class II ball mounts....

  • Ground Clearance of a 2004 Buick LeSabre with a Draw Tite Hitch Installed
  • I don't have an exact figure I can give you, but I can help you determine a close approximation of what the ground clearance your 2004 Buick LeSabre will have after the Draw Tite hitch part # 36309 is installed. First, your current exhaust will actually hang lower than the hitch opening, if you check out the picture I attached you will see this. The hitch opening will sit right below the rear bumper. So basically if you measure from the rear fascia to the ground on your vehicle and then...

  • Hitch and Towing Setup Recommendation for a 2008 Buick CXS
  • Since your 2008 Buick Lucerne is not a Special or Super model the recommended hitch for you would be the Draw-Tite hitch part # 36309. I attached installation instructions and an install video for you to check out. You will need to remove the exhaust from the rear hangers so that the exhaust can be temporarily lowered to install the hitch, but this is common on most hitch installs and would not be considered extra work or even be that difficult. The # 90125 you referenced would be the...

  • What is the Difference Between 2008 Buick Lucerne Special and Super Models and Regular Models
  • The Super and Special are trim and packages that the 2008 Buick Lucerne could come with. The CXL Special Edition will have a chrome grille and chrome clad 17 inch wheels and a badge on the trunk that indicates it is a Special model. The Super can be identified by a rear spoiler. If you have a Special or Super model, hitch # 36502 will fit. For a different model 2008 Buick Lucerne the comparable Draw-Tite hitch is # 36309. • Which Trailer Hitch Should I use for a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville to a Tow a 3,000 Pound Casita
  • Class I hitches typically have a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and Class II typically have a total capacity of 3,500 pounds. You will need to use a Class II hitch on your Bonneville to tow your trailer. Remember to also check the towing capacity listed in your vehicle owner manual. The vehicle may be capable of less than the hitch in which case you would need to abide by the vehicle tow rating. The highest capacity hitch we would offer for your 1992 Pontiac Bonneville will...

  • All of the trailer hitches we carry that have been determined to fit the 2000 Buick LeSabre are Class II hitches and have a 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver. We do not have a hitch for the 2000 LeSabre that has a 2 inch hitch receiver. If you are looking to do some light towing, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class II Frame Receiver Hitch # 36309. The recommended ball mount for this trailer hitch is # 36063. You will also want a hitch ball, like a 2 inch hitch ball # 19258 or a 1-7/8 inch hitch...

  • We can help you, but you will need to know what hitch manufacturer made the hitch you have and what part number it is. The part number you will need is # RHK.
