Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan we're going to install the Hidden Hitch, part number 87717. Before begin our installation, here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to outer most edge of the bumper is 3-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 12-3/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a draw bar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. Now let's go ahead with the installation.

Our first step will be removing the rear most bumper bracket frame fastener. After we have these removed we're now ready to go ahead and install the middle and forward hardware for our forward and middle attachments points. The easiest way to get this hardware into position is by using the pull wire provided with our install kit going through the attachment point and out the end of the bumper. There is a plastic flap that will need to be pushed out of the way in order to get the pull wire through and then the hardware back up into the frame. As you're putting the hardware into the frame, slide the block in past the plastic flap and then push the bOlt through.

You can then go ahead and pull it into position. Now we've got the forward attachment point here on the driver's side done and we'll repeat the same process for the other three attachment points that need the hardware put into the frame. Now with all our hardware in the frame, it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place as you install your fastener. I recommend to install them finger tight until you have them all in place. Alright, with all our fasteners in place we'll go ahead and tighten them down.

With all six fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque the specifications as indicated in the instructions. And that will complete our install of the Hidden Hitch, part number 87717 on our 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Your delivery was on time and packaging was excellent protecting the parts. Everything was great looking as I now expect from eTrailer. I am very pleased with the finished install as shown in the photos attached. 56283

Form fit and function was great. Very fast delivery. All holes aligned. Installation took some frame hole filing to enlarge holes for access. The most time is taken because the existing frame bolts don't come out, they twist off (minnesota salt and rust) so redrilling and adding tapped blocks was required. My only reservation is that the 'hidden' part means the receiver is welded on the BOTTOM of the cross tube, or underneath it. The cross tube then is up high, hidden, and no plastic cutting of the bumper trim. One down side is the structural connection between the two tubes is not as strong as I would like, but works fine for a small (max 2000 lbs) enclosed trailer. The other down side is that the reciever is very low to the ground. An offset/up drawbar works fine to level the trailer, but the receiver tube drags easily on driveways with vertical curve or slope, snow and rocks, with or without the trailer behind.. If the reciever tube was straight off the back of the crosstube, both of these issues would be resolved, but of course the car plastic trim would need to be cut. Overall, if you want a 'hidden hitch' with no plastic mods this was great and as advertised. Buy it. If doing again, I would get one with a higher receiver tube and cut out the plastic of the bumper trim. Plenty of room on my vehicle to do that, and the aesthetics is not critical on a 13 year old minivan. 53417

We ordered the hidden hitch for "Goldy," our 2001 Chrysler Town and Country Conversion (the extended roof with wood interior, mood lighting video, video game and audio inputs and outputs galore, TV, DVD etc.) minivan. We ordered the hitch and it was here in a couple days! My Father-In-Law and I put it on together. We only had basic cheap hand tools and a pair of metal car ramps. From backing "Goldy" up onto the ramps to pulling her back down complete was just over two hours, and that included a lunch break in between--thanks to the excellent videos that have. The only part that gave us a little trouble was fishing the plates and bolts to the rear holes. In my opinion, the fish cables should have been four to six inches longer. They worked, but it was a little trying. Everything else was SIMPLE, fast and pretty easy. We DID remove the rear bumper to try to see better, but it was not necessary, as it only half-way helped. We will order from again and again in the future for all of our towing needs. Next up--the wiring harness. We'll probably order it on Monday (today is Saturday) and have it arrive and installed way way before the weekend. Liz Lee Media 38694

Couldn't ask for better I am very pleased with this hitch - it really is hidden on my 2000 Grand Caravan, and it is easy to reach the receiver and pin hole. I found the video showing the installation to be invaluable. My only caveat is that the instructions said nothing about the fact that I had to drill the forward most bolt hole on both sides for this Class III hitch, but I would not have had that problem with the Class II. I probably still would have purchased the Class III, but some might not, so it would help to be up front about it. I don't think this is an issue with later models, as the third hole is factory installed. Also, I found the "20 minutes" of estimated installation time to be a bit optimistic. Perhaps a pro could do it that quickly on a lift, but I think an hour or 90 minutes might be more realistic for the average guy. Still, that is REALLY quick and very easy. The wire bolt puller/fish tape they give you worked like a charm for me. I would also advise getting or borrowing a calibrated torque wrench to ensure you have the required torque. That is called out in the written instructions, but not on the video, and it is an important precaution to take. Overall, I am very happy with this hitch and would recommend it to anyone. 3224

Excellent hitch I just installed the hitch today. I ordered the hitch on the phone and received it 2 days later. The hitch is very good quality and everything was just as advertised. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish but most of the time was preparing to mount the hitch. I did not have any access point on the frame, so I had to enlarge one of the oval holes on each side by filing them, (a small grinding wheel on a drill would be much better). Then I could not get the existing bumper bolts out with a hand socket,(it takes an 18mm metric). I had to borrow an impact wrench from a neighbor and keep spraying PB Blaster on the bolts and running them in and out until I finally was able to remove them. Once I had everything ready it took less than 30 minutes to insert the bolts, lift up the hitch and attach it to the van. The hitch fit perfectly with all of the holes lining up and looks really good on the van. The only thing that shows is the receiver. I would highly recommend this hitch 1830

Good unit-needs more hardware My '00 Grand Voyager had the rearmost bolts (to be reused) rusted. PB blaster and heat did not prevent me from busting the weld nuts. Getting a shop to cut of wiht a torque wasn't a problem. But I had to wait for the plant to send me 2 more bolts, nuts, plates, washers to fish into place. Since any van that will use this hitch will likely have the same problem ('96-'04 vans), kit should come with 6 sets of fasteners. But the instructions are great, fish lines worked perfectly. Customer service put me in direct contact with the plant, and they helped me quickly. Don't be afraid of drilling holes. Just get the hitch in place in the existing holes, use a center punch, drill 1/4" starter, then finish with 1/2". Use sharp drill bits and wear gloves and goggles. 2278

The hitch arrived very quickly. The most difficult part of the project was removing one of the bolts attaching the bumper. I sprayed a penetrant days prior and when I used my pneumatic wrench the bolt turned a quarter turn and stopped. I used my map gas torch to heat the nut and little by little the bolt came out. I had to reheat the nut a few times and used the pneumatic wrench each time. When I reinstalled the bolts I applied an antiseize compound and the bolts went in very easy. I agree with one of the reviews about the length of the snake it could be a little longer. Also, I purchased 4 lock washers too bad it doesn't come with the kit. Otherwise a great product. I would advise if using the hitch for cargo or bike carrier, purchase the J pin. 45312

The hitch fit my Chrysler T&C well. Plenty of clearance for the spare tire and the socket is just below the bumper and flush with the rear of the bumper. Perfect fit. You'd have to lie on the ground to see anything more than the receiver of the hitch; everything else is hidden. The only difficulty installing was the plastic parts of the bumper that partially cover the space where the carriage bolts are to be inserted. I used a step bit to enlarge two round holes in the frame to get them in and that mod made it a breeze to insert the bolts. The holes lined up just as they should. I managed to mount the pos REESE hitch from the auto parts store on my Dodge pickup so nothing was wasted. If I need another hitch I go the e-trailer first. 123392

The hidden trailer hitch receiver I purchased arrived just in time to install before my trip! However I feel it would have been helpful information to know that the vehicle frame mounting holes needed to drilled out larger. The instructions show that they recommend using a file! That would take all day not to mention the limited acces under the vehicle to get full motion. I recommend using a clyinder shaped grinding stone bit for your power drill. It made short work of the task and additional room for full motion was not needed. I was fortunate to have this bit in my shop supplies. Maybe you could include one of these in the installation kit in the future? The product itself was very satisfactory. Thank you. 48396

Good product. This hitch receiver fit right up to my 2003 Dodge Caravan. E-trailer shipped this product super fast (and I didn't opt for expedited shipping)! Just an extra install tip . . . Since there are 4 snake wires provided, I recommend leaving these threaded to the each bolt until just before the nut is to be threaded on to the bolt. That way, if the bolts do get pushed back up into the vehicle frame, they can be easily retrieved again. The snake wires do not need to be unthreaded, they can be just yanked off with a little bit of circle action as the wire is pulled. As is mentioned in the video, a second body will make the lifting, holding, and securing the hitch much easier. 114325

by: Don V.07/23/2012 is ......Excellent !! ... Would highly recommend. Everything arrived quickly and fit. Installed on a 2007 Chrysler T&C. The only Problems that I experienced were that the bumper mounting bolts required a breaker bar and some liquid wrench to get them removed. Also when fishing the mounting bolts through the vehicles frame channel, it has a hard plastic piece blocking the channel that the bolts must go through. I had to bend this out of the way, but the space to do this is extremely limited. It was real nice having the 4 wires to help with this task. The wheel mount Swagman XC worked great for two TREK Navigator bikes...very happy with this product so far. 49020

I have used Hidden Hitch products in the past with great success and this unit is no exception. Quality build, quality finish and as usual from eTrailer, super shipping speeds. Only challenging thing with this hitch is fishing the bolts through the frame as you may need to grind out the openings in order to get the bolts inside the frame rails. A drill with a extra hard grinding stone makes quick work of enlarging the holes. Fishing the bolts through is quite easy due to the included 'fishing wires' and the wiring harness (05 Chrysler Town n Country) was quite simply, the easiest wiring package I've ever encountered. 26034

Looks Great! Fishing Looks great on 2001 T&C Lx. Had some difficulty fishing the bolts back through because of some hard plastic flaps at the end of the frame. They are not rubber like the installation video states. On the right side, I was able to bend the plastic flap back and pull the bolts(2) through. On the left side there was less room to work. I was able to push the bolts through the hard plastic flap at the bottom gap. All this is by feel also. Using it for cargo and bike racks mostly. Product shipped promptly and arrived in box with directions in great shape. Happy with product and etrailer. 1977

The hitch was a little bit tight on one of the bolts at the muffler side of the van, other than that it fit perfectly. very good quality. It took me about 3 hrs to install though. I had problems removing the bolts from the van as they were a bit rusted, also it took me a while to fish the bolts through the little spaces; the video on the website was very usefull for the installation. I did not have to drill additional holes. I have a voyager model 2002. Im planning to use the hitch for bicycle transportation. Im very satisfied with the overall experience. 10963

One of the things that sold me on your product was the excellent video on installation of the hitch. In the video the excellent design of the hitch, including the ease of installation, was obvious. It did not take me long to do the installation myself, even without raising the minivan above its normal height. Now your follow-up communication adds to the demonstration of the high calibre of excellence in which your company is operated. Thank you for caring enough to provide good old fashioned American excellence. Jerry King 51524

Great Hitch...Fast shipping,,, READ ALL DIRECTIONS FIRST!!!!! I'm a guy.......... who reads the directions.... Well, read them ALL and watch the installation video. Then put your hitch on. Spray rusted bolts prior to removing and wear eye protectors! Love the hitch,,, really performed GREAT. Wiring harness was a breeze... I took a little extra time and really hid all the wires. Also installed Airshocks for the rear... very wise thing to do, would not have made the trip to the cabin with the quads otherwise!!!!! 1430

Had very little trouble installing hitch, drilled two holes for the forward bolts, the bolt fisher wire is GREAT. When I got to the wiring on the right side. I ran a rod down from the top hole for the wires to the bottom past the insulation, etc, then taped the wire to the rod and pulled it up, had no trouble with the left side, no wires are showing, any where in the installion. neat job. Think I did a great job for a 85 year old. No speed records here. 25436

Very impressed with the assembly. Only "nail-biter" was fishing the bolts into the chassis tubes. Long skinny fingers would have helped!!! I am a cheap money-miser but i feel satisified with this investment. I will recommend this product to my other "cheaps", as we all hang in a flock! I studied this hitch thing for over 3 weeks and selected this product. SAVE TIME and buy NOW!!! Mr. Ken ...(sorry for no pictures but i still use a $15.00 flip-phone.) 221009

This is my review, I have to say that wire where you thead bolt is good idea, however I did have some difficultly with the middle bolt hole, I had to take a piece of steel same thickness as the hitch, overlay to coommadate the thread hole that is in the frame of van. Straddled metal piece from 1st hole to middle threaded hole and bolted to the middle threaded hole to van frame. This solved my problem ran bolts in all 6 holes. Sinerely John P 19546

I ordered the hidden hitch and wiring harness kits on Thursday and they were at my door on Monday with notices from etrailer staff every step of the way. In fact, I ordered at 11:30 and by 2:30 it was shipped. I do quite a bit of online shopping but have to say this is the best experience I have ever had. Etrailer sets the bar pretty high. Oh, and the hitch and harness were installed by Monday evening with only a modest amount of hassle. 52516

Great-looking, unseen hitch. Very happy with the prompt delivery from etrailer, and the hitch arrived in perfect condition (no scratches in the paint). Since we have salty roads in the winter, I put a coat of Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator and a coat of Rustoleum enamel on it, just to keep it rust-free. Installation was a breeze. Like the way this hitch looks, with very little of the hitch bracket/tube visible from the back. 2984

I just finished installing this in my 06 Caravan by myself. The hardest part was fishing the wire through the frame, especially the bolts towards the front of the car. Just be careful when threading the front holes because the wire is just barely long enough to reach. A second pair of hands is great but is not needed. Just be careful to hold it so it doesn't fall on your face when trying to screw it in. 21669

Awesome hitch A+ You can't find a better hitch for you minivan than this one. It carries more weight than the van can tow and it looks great. The only part of the hitch you see is the reciever tube. The cross bar is hidden by the bumper which was a must for me. Fairly easy to install, but my old bolts broke off because they were rusty. prices are unbeatable on hitch. Very happy 325

Product delivery was very fast. Installation was very quick and simple after watching the online installation videos. My vehicle was missing a couple of factory bolts but we managed to get replacements from a junked vehicle. I haven't towed anything yet but I am getting my utility trailer this weekend. Etrailer is definitely the best way to go. It couldn't get any better than this. 70997

Customer Service was very pleasant, shipping was fast, and because I am unable to do this type of work any longer, I called on my mechanic. Since he has installed this same hitch many times before, he had the job completed in 30 minutes. The hitch is very sturdy and will have no reservations carrying a lift and electric wheelchair. I would recommend this hitch. Sorry, no pics. 107944

Very happy with trailer hitch. The hitch took about 2 hours to install, on my 2000 Chrysler Town and Country. The mounting bolts securing the front holes of the hitch to the frame required me to grind the carriage bolts in order to fish them through the frame holes. The hitch sits hidden under the chassis and the spare tire fit nicely. Thanks for the great product !!! 50437

The hitch itself is great quality and I received it amazingly quickly. However, I ordered one for a 99 Town and Country minivan that was supposed to just bolt on and the product I received was "bolt-on" for 2001 and later. So I had to drill and tap new holes, "which is always fun", he said sarcastically. Still, it works great and I am having fun pulling my boat. 23884

Great service from etrailer. The hitch was on my front porch quicker than the local parts store could have gotten it for me -- and the price was a few bucks better. The Hidden Hitch is not quite as well finished as some other brands I have used -- there are some weld splatters and some thin spots in the paint -- but it fits well enough and should work just fine. 20637

Saved my Caravan Great product very easy to instal and looked fantastic. The best part is my wife was rear ended and the hitch took most of the damage (saved about $3000.00 in repair cost).Though the hitch didn't survive, my van did and I have ordered the exact one to replace it.. Thank you Hidden hitch.. I would recommend this hitch to any one looking for one. 1969

Trailer hitch is good. The install didn't go as easy as hoped. Two of the holes fit on our 99 Dodge Grand Caravan but the third (toward the front of the vehicle) was no where close to an access hole. It was easier just to remove the bumper to do this installation and we did that almost immediately once looking at it. Plan to use it for bike carrier mostly. 17627

Took a little longer to install this product because I dropped the bolts. One on each side when installing. After retrieving them instal went smooth. The unit was easy to install with the videos. The only problem I encountered was removing the two bolts from the frame witch were rusted from the northern Illinois winters. The construction of the product is good. The installion of it is a joke. Being an HVAC service technician and having mechanical experiance. You have to ream out openings in the frame and snake a rectangular washer and carriage bolt through the frame to attach the item. I would recommend finding a hitch that installs easier. 47825

First time buyer This is the first time I have ever bought a trailer hitch, I usually make my own. The trailer hitch that I bought for my Dodge Caravan 2002 fits very well to my car. I had the problem with installation. Great hitch. Install took me 45 minutes. Mostly to get the old bolts off. Used a long 2 feet plus socket wrench to remove. I sprayed them with liquid wrench for 3 nights/days while I was waiting for shipment. Move steadly and it sholdn't snap. Rust was equivalent to 8 winters in michigan salt. 18519

I have not yet used my hitch to tow or carry cargo. Ordering, Delivery, and Installation were all excellent. It was pretty easy to install and looks really good. It is hidden very well under the van and fit perfectly with the pre-drilled holes. Appears to be of very durable construction. 45157

I installed this hitch on my wife's 2005 Caravan in an hour and a half (including the wiring harness). It sure helped to watch the video before I started the job. The shipping was fast, the price was great, all around good experience. 44885

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • What is the Towing Capacity of a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan with 3.8 Liter V6 Engine
  • According to the owners manual I viewed online for the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan, if you have the 3.8 liter engine the gross trailer weight capacity at most is 1,800 pounds and 180 pounds tongue weight. This is with 2 people in the van and luggage. With 3 to 5 people and luggage the capacity goes down to 1,350 pounds and 135 pounds tongue weight. And with 6 to 7 people and luggage it goes down to 1,000 pounds gross trailer and 100 pounds tongue weight. I recommend verifying by checking your...

  • What Trailer Hitch Will Fit On A 2007 Grand Caravan With Stow-N-GO Seating
  • You will need the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 87719, which will work on the 2007 Dodge Caravan with Stow-N-GO seating. It is a Class III hitch and has a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. with a tongue weight of 350 lbs. On the 2007 Dodge Caravan with Stow-N-GO seating the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 87717, that you have referenced will not work. Also needed is a Draw-Tite Ball Mount, # 2923, a Pin and Clip, # PC3, and a hitch ball. The hitch ball you need will depends on the size...

  • How to Use Bike Rack while Towing a Utility Trailer with a 2003 Dodge Caravan
  • Attaching part # 87717 to your utility trailer would not be a safe way to go. Small utility trailers are not designed to have any weight mounted like that. However we do have a few options for you to accomplish what you are wanting to do. The first would be the Swagman XP Towing Bike Rack, part # S64955. This will allow you to carry three bikes and it will clamp around the ball mount you use for your trailer. This would be the safest and strongest method to use. Remember, the weight...

  • Difference Between Hidden Hitch # 87717 and Draw-Tite # 75119 for 2005 Dodge Caravan
  • Although both hitches are for a 2005 Caravan without Stow-N-Go seating, the # 87717 will not fit vehicles equipped with the rear stabilizer bar. The Draw-Tite # 75119 will fit stabilizer bar equipped vehicles. If you do not have the stabilizer bar, either hitch would work great for you. The crossbar of the # 75119 is constructed of tubular steel pipe, which many people find more visually appealing than the square tube of the # 87717. Both hitches have the same weight capacity, but...

  • Brake Controller, Wiring and Hitch Recommendation for a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • The first thing wiring related you need for the towing setup of your 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan is a 4-way. This is the trailer wiring that controls the turn signal functions of your trailer. For that you would want the Curt Wiring Harness part # C55376. This installs easily by plugging in line with your vehicle taillights. Next you need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that it will match your trailer's connector and so you can install and use a brake controller. For that you need the...

  • Compatibility and Safety of Trunk Mount Bike Racks for a 2003 Chrysler Voyager
  • A trunk mount rack is the most economical way to go but if the issue with the rear glass is still a concern then I would recommend going with a trailer hitch and hitch mount bike rack. We have numerous options for hitches, but I recommend going with a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. This hitch will be stronger with a higher weight capacity than a Class I or II trailer hitch. I recommend Hidden Hitch # 87717. I have included a link to the installation instructions below. With...

  • Recommendations for Towing a Pop Up Camper with a 2005 Dodge Caravan
  • You will need to check your owners manual, or with the Chrysler dealer to determine the towing capacity of your 2005 Dodge Caravan. Once you know the capacity of the vehicle you will need to find a camper that weighs less than the vehicles maximum towing capacity, when fully loaded, to safely tow the trailer. If you need a hitch for your Caravan, I would recommend the Hidden Hitch Class III Trailer Hitch, item # 87717, if your vehicle does not have stow-n-go seating. If you do have stow-n-go...

Regardless of which hitch is used, the Grand Caravan is limited to a maximum of 2000 lb towing / 200 lb tongue weight. However, all of the carriers weight 85 pounds or more so if you add the weight of the carrier to the 300 pound chair you would be exceeding that capacity. First, you will need to make sure that the bike rack is compatible with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. If the rack is designed for 2 inch receivers, you will need to go with # 87717 or # 75119, or get a compatible bike rack. • Why Will the Hidden Hitch # 87717 Not Fit on a 2003 Dodge Caravan with a Rear Stabilizer Bar
  • According to my technical contact at Hidden Hitch the # 87717 is not considered compatible with a 2003 Dodge Caravan models that have Stow and Go seating or vehicles that have a rear stabilizer bar. This hitch requires 3 mounting locations, and most likely the forward most mounting hole would interfere with the vehicle stabilizer bar. This is not terribly difficult, you can remove the two rear bumper bolts as indicated in the instructions, use the bolt leader to fish the rearward bolts into place, and loosely bolt the hitch into place.
