Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Subaru Impreza - Curt

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Subaru Impreza - Curt

Today's 2009 Subaru Impreza, we're going to install part number C11315 from CURT. This is what the hitch looks like once installed on the car. Next, we'll give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a bicycle rack or cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground, will be around 11 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper, will be about 2 inches. Now, we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing we need to do is go ahead and lower the exhaust.

To help us do that, we'll go ahead and install a strap underneath the vehicle to help hold the exhaust when we lower it down. Next, we'll spray down the rubber hangers with some lubricant. We'll spray them down and then go ahead and pry off the hangers. There'll be 2 for each muffler. Then, up by the back axle, remove another hanger to give us a little bit more working room.

Let's go ahead and lower it down onto our strap. Now, there'll be 4 plugs in the frame rails we'll have to remove. There'll be 2 on each side. We'll go ahead and show you how the hardware interacts with the hitch. On the holes closest to the bumper, we'll install the 7/16 carriage bolt with the 2 and 1/2 inch square hole spacer. Underneath, we'll get the 7/16 lock nut.

Now, on the hole going towards the front of the car we'll get the 3 inch long spacer block and a 1/2 inch carriage bolt. Underneath, we'll get the 1/2 inch flange nut. Optional will be a spacer block, used as needed, to level out the hitch. Now, we'll go ahead and install 7/16 hardware closest to the bumper. We'll take our fish wire, which comes with the kit, and we'll go ahead and push it through the hole we're going to use. We'll go ahead and push it out our access hole, going towards the front of the car.

Then we'll take our block, we'll thread it on, then push it into the frame. Then we'll take our carriage bolt, thread it on, and push it in head first, and into the frame. Then, we'll gently pull through and out the bottom. We'll do this on both sides of the car. Now, we need to install our 1/2 inch hardware. We'll go ahead and do a test fit and you can see how it won't fit. We'll have to make some room for it. In this case, we're going to use a 3/8 inch drill bit and drill a hole right next to it. We want it to overlap just a little bit. With the hole enlarged, we'll go ahead and install our hardware, a little bit differently this time. We'll go ahead and thread our bolt leader through our block and then, we'll thread it onto our bolt before we install the frame. Then, we'll push the bolt in, and then the block, then pull it back through the same hole. We'll do this on both sides of the car, as well. Now, at this point, we can go ahead and lift the hitch up into position. You'll definitely want an extra set of hands to help hold it up. Then, we'll go ahead and install our flange nut for our 7/16 bolt. Then, we'll install our 1/2 inch flange nut for the 4 fasteners. We'll do this on both sides of the car, as well. After our hardware's loosely installed, we'll go ahead and stud 00:03:02 down the bolts and then torque the bolts as specified in the instructions. Then we'll go ahead and push the exhaust back up into the hangers. We'll spray them down once again to make them a little bit easier to put on. Then, we'll work them on, one at a time. OK and with that, that'll finish it for our install, part number C11315 from CURT on our 2009 Subaru Impreza. .

Excellent product. Once the plugs were out, just had to enlarge the holes closer to the front of the car. Fishing the items through wasn't tough, except that I made a little mistake and basically 'overthreaded' the bolts onto the fish wire. By doing this (luckily it was on the last bolt) a piece got caught on the underside of the frame rail and I had to yank it out (basically rending that fishing wire useless). So although you want to make sure the fishing wire is threaded, be sure not to overthread either. Actually getting the bolt to pull through the plate was rather easy. When it came to fishing the bolts closer to the front of the car, these were a piece of cake due to the larger hole and that you only needed to fish the bolt right back through the backing plate. On our 2010 Impreza wagon we did have to cut off one of the exhaust hangers (the one closest to rear of the car on the driver's side)as it just wouldn't fit once we had the hitch bolted on. There were 3 other exhaust hangers (and the one by the rear axle) so no worries of the muffler hanging down. It is a quite heavy piece and you want to be sure not to push the bolts back into the frame rails, so I had a helper assist me while it was on the lift to make sure we had it lined up (we did one side at a time and hand-tightened the bolts). We then tightened them as per the torque specs in the install guide and put the muffler back on. All in all a great product, and took about 1.5 hours to put in (I took my time and referenced the video a few times). 126477

So far so good. I haven't actually used it yet but it sure looks good. I was planning on doing the installation myself but had no ramps so I had Uhaul install it for $55 - well worth it. I did, however, do all the wiring myself. Took me a few hours but everything went smoothly. 20751

Excellent trailer hitch, and relatively easy to install with a few caveats: 1. The fishing of the bolts through the frame is a little hair raising at times, and would have been helped by having the car jacked up. 2. It is more than a 50 minute install and requires more than one person to lift and hold the pretty heavy (see solid) bumper into position. 3. Bolts are pretty tight and require nimble hands to fish them in around the exhaust and piping. Otherwise the product performs just as advertised and I am a very happy camper. Great product. 24186

I am happy with this hitch now that I have it installed. However, it is worth noting that for the 2010 Subaru Impreza (non-wrx), the hitch needs to be installed simultaneously with the muffler, and if the muffler is ever removed the hitch will have to come out. I suspect that other hitches with sides that are more straight down will not have this problem. I have no idea what other vehicles will be like, but suspect they will be the same unless they have a narrower muffler. 73468

I ordered a hitch for my subaru outback Impreza sport. My costumer service experience was great. All the information I needed to know was discussed before hand to be sure that I was buying the right hitch. I ordered the hitch and it arrived at its destination less than 5 days of ordering it. I would definitely do business with Curt again and highly recommend them. 160937

Hitch went on very easily. The only difficult part was re-attaching the exhaust hangers. I was suprised at the weight of the hitch and the build quality appears to be very good. 15325

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport
  • For your 2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 11315, that you have referenced, because it has a slightly lower install difficulty than the other available hitches. We base install difficulty on how long it takes to install a hitch and the Curt hitch is a 5 out of 10. This means for a novice it should take about 50 minutes to install the hitch. This is a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening capable of 200 pounds tongue weight capacity...

  • Will CURT Trailer Hitch # C11120 Fit a 2011 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport with Single Exhaust
  • I do have a trailer hitch that will fit your 2011 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport model with single exhaust, but Hitch # C11120, will only fit the WRX and STI models with quad exhaust. Instead, take a look at CURT Trailer Hitch # 11315. Curt lists this hitch as a fit for the 2011 Subaru Impreza single exhaust Outback Sport models. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If you plan on doing some towing, the hitch comes with a ball mount, pin and clip. For a ball...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for Subaru Impreza 2008 WRX Hatchback/Wagon
  • I would recommend the Hidden Hitch Class 1 Trailer Hitch, item # 60893, for your 2008 Subaru Impreza five door Wagon. This hitch comes with the drawbar pin and clip, so all you will need to complete your towing setup is wiring and a hitch ball. All of the hitches available for your vehicle are Class 1 rated and will require some enlargement of access holes to install so there is no real advantage of one over the other. We have the wiring kit your vehicle needs which is the Upgraded...

  • Trailer Hitch Compatibility with a 2011 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport
  • The reason class II trailer hitches are not recommended for your 2011 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport is because your vehicle has a maximum towing capacity of 1,000 lbs and maximum tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs. I confirmed these capacities with my local Subaru dealer. This information can also be found in your owners manual under the towing section. Trailer hitch manufacturers design trailer hitches for vehicles based on the specs provided by the vehicle manufacturer. Since the maximum...

  • What Hitch and Wiring will Fit my 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX 4 Door Sedan
  • In order to determine if it will fit and what wiring is need I need to know what year your WRX is. Hitch 11315 from Curt is designed for 2008-2010 Impreza Wagons, so I doubt it is the right fit for a 4 door WRX.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Subaru Outback Towing a 2,000 Pound Trailer and 3 Bikes
  • Based on what you want to use a trailer hitch for on your 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon, the ideal hitch for you would be a Class II trailer hitch, specifically the Hidden Hitch, # 90208. One thing I would add about the hitch weights is that the shipping weight includes the weight of the packaging materials. Some of the hitches that are oddly shaped may require more packing material making the shipping weight higher. The actual weight of the hitches will be a few pounds lighter. With that...

  • What is the Recommended Ball Mount for a 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • You will not want to drill any holes in the ball mount shank or the hitch itself. This will void the warranty and it can weaken the metal and make the capacity unknown. The best thing you can do is get a ball mount that has the length you need. There is no set length it has to be. Provided that it clears the rear of the vehicle and is not excessively extended (varies depending on the vehicle, hitch, and tongue weight of trailer) you can use a 14 inch long ball mount. For the Class III...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium
  • The best solution would be for you to install a 2 inch trailer hitch like # 87568 so there will not be any compatibility issues with your accessories and the hitch. You would not want to use an adapter to go from 1-1/4 to 2 inches because doing so reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. So that 200 pound tongue weight capacity would be cut down to 100 pounds when using the adapter. In terms of ground clearance, on the wagon models the top of the hitch receiver...

  • Trailer Hitch and Trunk Mount Bike Racks for a 2009 Subaru Outback and 2005 Toyota Prius
  • The Thule Raceway, # TH9002PRO, will fit the 2005 Toyota Prius, but it will not fit a 2009 Subaru Outback. At this time, there are no trunk mount bike rack options for a 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon. For the Outback, I recommend a trailer hitch and hitch mount bike rack. If it is not a Sport model, I recommend Hidden Hitch trailer hitch # 87446. This is a Class III trailer hitch that will allow many options in the way of bike racks. The most popular 3 bike rack is # 59403. If you have...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • There are some Class II trailer hitches available for the 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon, but no Class I trailer hitches. A Class II trailer hitch still has a 1-1/4 inch receiver like a Class I, but you will have a higher capacity and more accessory options. If weight of the hitch is an issue, a Class III, # 87568, weighs less at 37 pounds, than a Class II, # 90208, at 39 pounds. Honestly, I would go with a Class III for several reasons. First, you never know what you may want to tow or...

  • Recommend Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 Bike Rack for 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • Since you have stated you want access to your rear cargo area on your Subaru Outback, I would suggest a hitch mounted bike rack. Please refer to your owners manual or your dealership for the towing capacity of your vehicle. I would recommend the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2, part # HR1000. This rack is a platform style rack that will fit either a 1-1/4 in or 2 in receiver and is compatible with Class l and Class ll hitches. It has cushioned clamps that allow you to secure bikes of...

  • Will a Trailer Hitch Fit a 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX with SPT Cat Back Exhaust Upgrade from Subaru
  • Trailer hitches including Curt hitch # C11315 are designed and tested on stock vehicles. Even though the exhaust on your 2008 Subaru Impreza is from the factory it could be considered an option which isn't tested for. If it is the same exhaust that is on the STi models then none of the hitches will fit. There is not a lot of space available so if the exhaust you have is larger than the normal exhaust the hitches will not fit.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Subaru Impreza
  • You will need to get a new hitch for your 2013 Subaru Impreza, the Curt Hitch # C11315 that you referenced is only designed to work on Imprezas from 2008-2011 so it would not work for your 2013 even though they look similar. I would recommend the Curt Hitch # C11286 if you have a hatchback with single exhaust, Curt Hitch # C11120 if you have a hatchback WRX with quad tip exhaust, Curt Hitch # C11284 if you have a non-WRX Sedan or Curt Hitch # C11317 if you have a Sedan WRX.
