Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup - Curt

Today on our 2001 Dodge Ram pickup we're going to review and install the Curt Class 5 extra duty 2 inch receiver tube hitch, part #C15300. Here's what it looks like once it's installed. As you can see we've got our heavy duty, square, cross-tube design into a fully welded construction. The entire hitch has a nice black powder coated finish. Blends in nicely with the under body of the vehicle. On either side of the receiver tube is our chain hold down. All the way through the receiver tube is the pre-drilled 5/8 pinhole.

The receiver tube itself is a 2 inch by 2 inch. It's a class 5 which means it's capable up to 2,400 pounds of tongue weight and a 16,000 pound tow capacity. Next, we'll give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. Such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 3-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube down to the ground is 16-3/4 inches. We'll now go ahead show you the minimum tools required for installing the hitch.

We've got our 3/4 inch socket, 7/8 inch socket, extension and ratchet. Our 9/16 drill bit and drill. Along with our torque wrench. Now, let's go ahead and show you how to install the hitch. To begin our install we're going to go ahead and point out the attachment points. We're going to have a total of 6 attachment points.

3 on each side. See each process we do here to one side will get repeated identically on the opposite side. Starting at the end of the frame rail we're going to use the 1/2 inch pre-drilled holes. However, the rear attachment point needs to be enlarged to a 9/16 hole. So, using a 9/16 drill bit we're going to go ahead and drill it out. Next, we can put our hardware in place.

We're going to have a 9/16 carriage bolt and spacer block. We'll engage the carriage bolt with the spacer block and then drop it down through the frame. Once the hitch is up to the frame we can use the 9/16 flange nut to secure it. For our center and forward attachment points we're going to use the 1/2 inch carriage bolt and spacer block. Engage the carriage bolt to spacer block and then drop it down through the frame. To secure the hitch we'll use the 1/2 inch flange nut for the center and forward attachment points. Now with my hardware in place here on the passenger side we will repeat the same process on the driver side. We're now ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fastener. Now for our center attachment point we're going to add a spacer block between our flange nut and the hitch. Now with all our fasteners in place we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Once we have it tightened down we can go ahead and torque to specifications, as indicated in the instructions. Now with everything installed, tightened down, and torqued to specifications we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for our review and install of the Curt Class 5 extra duty 2 inch receiver tube hitch, part #C15300, on our 2001 Dodge Ram pickup.

One extremely tough hitch. I have a 1996 Ford F250, the body shop thought it wouldn't work. I got it home and with a lot of grunting and drilling (use a new cobalt bit), I was able to bolt it, one side at a time. When drilling, use some cutting oil that's used for black iron pipe (Oatey, found in plumbing will work). To make sure your carriage bolt plate will seat flat, make sure to drill as close inward toward the center of your vehicle as you can, allowing yourself enough metal as is reasonable. Thanks etrailer for the expedited shipping and great phone help. I've attached some pics for those who want to see what it looks like installed. 66904

The hitchon my farm pickup tore loose from pulling heavy loads. I had a very heavy load to pull when my hitch failed so I started calling around for a class V hitch. Of course nobody in town stocks them so I ended up omline and found one at E-trailer. The sales woman was friendly and helpful in getting me set up with the hitch I needed. I ordered it 2nd day delivery and received it two days after I ordered it. I was concerned about the mounting as I have before ordered hitches from other places that did not line up with the factory holes. Everything fit well, I had to drill out 2 of the mounting holes for the heavier 9/16 rear bolts but that was a quick and easy fix. The hitch holes lined up well with the truck holes perfectly and it mounted up quickly to my truck. We put a bit of weld on it also to assure the strength we needed. Had to move a very heavy load and the hitch worked well. 158734

My application: 1989 F-250HD 7.3L IDI Extended Cab with a stock-style bumper. This thing is EXTRA beefy. The steel is twice as thick as the Reese class IV hitch it replaced. The mountung holes are bored out a little over-sized so you have wiggle room to install it straight and square. It sits a little tighter to the truck and bumper than my Reese did, but it's perfect and looks great. The coating seems durable, obviously only time will tell on that. You will have to drill into the frame. For most people 4 holes have to be drilled. Use lubricant! (I had the stock holes, and in addition had to drill 2 holes for the Reese hitch and I still had to drill 4 holes for this hitch. The mounting pattern is much more compact than most class III and IV hitches I've seen.) 184595

I was looking for a receiver hitch for my 1987 F-250 that wouldn't interfere with my spare. I had to replace my bumper which was a ugly 10 in drop. (This won't fit the 10 in drop unless you make a cutout for the receiver) I picked up a stock, better looking bumper for 30 bucks. There where no holes in my frame so I removed the rivets, opened those hole and had to drill 4 more holes for the install. The hitch is the heaviest hitch I have seen and well worth the money. Free shipping and it was at my door in less than a week. 81631

First time ordering from eTrailer but it I'm sure it will not be the last time. The search process for a hitch for my 1995 F150 on the website was very quick, there were several options, and the information was straight forward and easy to understand. The hitch arrived in only about four days and I installed the hitch without any problems thanks to the clear instructions and the video that was on the website. Thanks for all the help. 121469

The Receiver arrived 3 days earlier than expected, which was awesome considering we are signing on our house the next day after receiving the hitch, allowing us to haul our enclosed trailer better and move in. Everything was perfect, ordering was easy, shipping was super prompt, and installation was a breeze with my Mag Drill. The 96 F350 DRW has 54k miles on it and a factory tow package and controller, extremely rare. 215565

I will only buy a CURT hitch. The reason being is that the ends are caped off with the mounting plates so no road salt can lay inside the main tube and rust it out causing a catastrophic failure. When UPS dropped it off we weren't home. the box was tore open where the mounting brackets had come through from throwing it around the loading docks, I hope the mounting hardware is still in the box..... 147020

Super fast shipping! I chose the 3-5 day shipping and it arrived 2 days later! Excellent communication as far as receiving emails about order updates and shipping information. Great product and super easy to install. Proper drill bits and drill are needed of course but after the holes were drilled it only took about 15 minutes to connect the hitch to the frame. 95216

I would give this receiver a full five stars, but the carriage bolts sent with the offset washers didn't fit in them and you can't just make the square hole bigger. Luckily I was replacing a factory one and just used the original bolts. The receiver is quite beefier than the original and has some good quality to it. 223094

Quality product that fit well on my 1994 Ford F250. Install was very simple. I would recommend this hitch over all the other brands more commonly known since it truly is a class 5 hitch where others I looked for were not for my make and model vehicle. This is exactly what I wanted and was looking for. 138650

Great customer service, The first hitch I ordered would not fit due to the frame dimension which was wider than the hitch. Called back and figured out which hitch would fit and they paid freight to send the first one back. Good quality product and easy installation. Thank you 82645

Very nice product. Easy to install. I understand now why it is rated to tow much more than the original equipment hitch as it is made from much heavier gauge steel. Also, Lexus G. was a pleasure to work with. Thanks for an excellent experience. 172321

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Where to Measure Vehicle Frame for Picking Out Trailer Hitch
  • When measuring the frame width on a vehicle, you will need to measure from the outside of one frame rail to the outside of the other frame rail. If you have the larger frame width of 37-1/4 inches you would want the Curt Hitch part # C15300, or if you have the 34 inch frame width (most likely cab and chassis model) you would want the part # 13028.

This is how most snow plows like the Agri-Cover SnowSport HD Utility Snowplow for 2" Hitches # A40000HD attach to vehicles. We do not carry any custom fit front mount hitches that are confirmed to fit your vehicle, but if you found a local fabricator qualified in hitch fabrication he could make you something.

  • Highest Rated Hitch Recommendation for a 1997 Dodge Ram 3500
  • The highest rated hitch we offer for your 1997 Dodge Ram is the Curt Hitch part # C15300. The capacities for this hitch are 2,400 lbs tongue weight and 17k total trailer weight when used with weight distribution. It doesn't look like this hitch would have enough capacity for the trailer you plan to tow unless you can reduce the weight of the trailer by 1,000 lbs or so. You will need a weight distribution system though. To get the full weight capacity you would need a WD system will be...

  • Availability of Class IV Hitch for 1996 Dodge Ram Sport
  • Assuming your truck has the factory bumper, we offer two compatible hitches, the Curt Class IV # 14001 or the Draw-Tite Class IV, # 41923. Both hitches have the same weight capacity and would install in the same manner. This being said, I prefer the more heavily gusseted Draw-Tite model. You'll want to ensure that your truck is rated to tow up to the capacity of the hitch. If the truck capacity is lower, you'll need to abide by the lower capacity. To complete your towing system,...

  • Bolt Hole Location on Curt Class V Trailer Hitch Receiver # C15300 for 1993 Ford F-150
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt to obtain the mounting bolt hole locations for the Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C15300 on a 1993 Ford F-150. I have attached a picture to illustrate these measurements. As for repositioning the spare tire, you may need to work with it a little or guide it back into place after installing the hitch. Just takes a little bit of muscle to maneuver the tire away from the hitch and you will be good to go.

  • Will Curt # C15300 Clear Flatbed on 1997 Ford F350
  • I spoke with my Curt representative, who tells me that the front face of the receiver would sit 10-3/4 inches rearward of the rear-most mounting hole. If you find the rear most mounting hole in the underside of the frame member and measure 10-3/4 inches rearward, it'll give you a good idea of how far back the face of the receiver would sit. I've edited a photo for you that shows this dimension.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 1986 Ford F-150
  • The most popular trailer hitch for your 1986 Ford F-150 is # C15300 if it is a regular pick-up truck model, not a cab and chassis, and if it has the standard or step bumper. Cab and chassis models will have a more narrow frame width and are used to make service trucks and emergency vehicles. The regular pick-up models will have a frame width of 37-1/4 inches measured from the outside of one frame rail to the outside of the other frame rail. If you have a regular pick-up model and...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 1996 Ford F-150 to Tow Limos on a Trailer
  • For a 1996 Ford F-150 with a standard or step bumper the most popular hitch option is # C15300. It is considered a Class V hitch but has the more common 2 inch receiver. It is rated for 2,400 pounds of tongue weight and 16,000 pounds gross trailer weight (17,000 when used with weight distribution). This likely exceeds the capacity of the truck but check the owners manual for the trucks capacity and, if lower, go by the lower rating. Since you will be doing some towing I recommend etrailer...

  • What Does GVWR Mean for a Truck
  • The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers. Maximum trailer weight rating is the heaviest trailer you can tow. So for your truck the heaviest trailer you can tow would be 8,400 lbs regardless of what hitch you use. So you would not be...

  • High Capacity Trailer Hitch for a 1995 Ford F-150 XLT with Regular Step Bumper
  • The 2 Curt hitches you referenced are not a fit for a 1995 Ford F-150. Hitch # C15845 is for Super/Heavy duty cab and chassis models, not regular pickups, and # C15810 is for F-250 and F-350 models. For your F-150 with the regular step bumper you can use Curt hitch # C15300 or # 14001. I have linked some videos showing how these hitches install.
