Trailer Hitch Installation - 2007 Mini Cooper S Series

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation- 2009 Mini Cooper

Today on this 2009 Mini Cooper S we are going to install part number 11130 from Curt. This is what the hitch looks like when it is installed on the vehicle. Next, we will give you some measurements to help you out in ing some accessories such as, a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin opening to the outside edge of the bumper it is going to be 4-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube down to the ground, it will be 15-1/2 inches. Next, we will show you how the hitch is installed. 0:30

First thing we need to do is remove the rear bumper fascia. There are a variety of fasteners, approximately 11 of them. We will start with the two screws at the top. Then remove this fastener inside the fender wall. There is also a fastener right here we need to remove as well. Let us pull our fender cover out of the way and go ahead and disconnect the light. There is a little fastener right here we need to remove as well. Now this trim piece right here, needs to be removed as well and it just unsnaps. Then behind here is another screw. That should cover for the passengers side and then we will go ahead and repeat the same process on the drivers side. There is one bolt on the bottom here that we have to undo. There is a clip right here in the center, pull it up and back a little bit and then it snaps. 1:24

The next thing we need to do is go ahead and remove the factory bumper beam right here. We will remove all four bolts around it. We will leave two bolts in place just until we are ready to take the bumper off. Go ahead and remove the factory wiring harness from the bumper structure. Now we should be able to remove the bumper. Alright, we have the hitch in position right here, just for now to show you how it mounts up onto the vehicle. The bumper structure will actually sit on top of this. So you want to take a few moments to hold it up against it and this will give you an idea of where you need to trim the foam for the hitch. To remove the foam s, we are just going to make a cut about an inch or inch-a-half or so to match this area right here. We will do it on both sides and then use this section. 2:24

What we will do is actually put the bumper structure and hitch together separately. The bolts will be like this when we install it. This is where you will definitely need an extra set of hands to help put everything together. We each have one bolt on each side to hold everything together. However we do need to install the conical tooth washer with the kit. We will do the remaining bolts just like that. With all of our hardware installed we will go ahead and snug them down and then torque them down as specified in the instructions. 3:02

Let us go ahead and reinstall the wiring. Then, let us turn our attention to the bumper cover. Now we have to do some trimming on the rear balance here. What we are actually going to do is move this black center section and approximately right here we are going to have to make our cut out for the hitch. We are going to put our bumper cover on just by the front snaps just to hold it in place. This will give us the indication of how everything will fit and what we will cut out on the balance. We will put the shank with ball mount on top of it and this will give us a good idea of what we need to cut out. So, you will be cutting out an inch-and-a-half square total. The shank itself is actually inch-and-a-quarter. We double checked ourselves and we can reinstall the trim panel. Alright at this point we can reinstall our bumper cover for good. Okay, with that we have finished our install part number 11130 from Curt.

Item was shipped very quickly. The items were packaged very well to prevent damage to the electrical items I also ordered. The videos by etrailer showing the installation process were very helpful. I often refered to the videio to supplement the Curt instructions. This is not the first time I have ordered from etrailer and I have always be extremely satisfied with their service.47999

  • What is the Function of the Stabilizing Strap for Curt Trailer Hitch 11130 on 2010 Mini Cooper
  • The strap referred to for the # 11130 Curt trailer hitch, part # 18050, would be used as an extra stabilizer for the bike rack or accessory. In the case of a bike rack, you would attach the strap between the upright bar of the bike rack and the rear door on your 2010 Mini Cooper. This # 18050 strap is recommended to prevent extra sway due to the low tongue weight capacity of the class I hitch, in order to maintain the hitch warranty and also to provide extra support to prevent damage to the

  • Hitch Pin Install Difficulty, 2008 Mini Cooper Trailer Hitch, Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendations
  • The hitch pin hole for the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 11130, is accessible by reaching under and behind the bumper to insert the hitch pin. In the case of your bike rack that uses the bolt, you would have more luck with a ratchet instead of a regular wrench. There is some space back there, but not a lot. With this trailer hitch, when you have any non-trailer load such as a bike rack or cargo carrier, Curt requires the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, to be in compliance with their warranty.

  • There are 2 metal rings welded to the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 11130, on each side of the receiver to attach safety chains. You will have to reach up behind the bumper fascia to connect the safety chains. For safety chains, we have 48 Inch Long Safety Chain, part # 2114-553-04. For quick links to attach the chains, we have the Safety Chain Quick Link, part # 49135. Instructions and a video installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch # 11130 are linked.

  • Will a Trailer Hitch Fit a 2008 Mini Copper S John Cooper Works Edition
  • You will need to cut a hole in the rear bumper fascia in order to install trailer hitch # 11130 on your 2008 Mini Cooper S. I have included a link to the installation details and a video for you to view. I have seen several different styles of the John Cooper Works models of the 2008 S and it looks like if yours is one that has that little light above the exhaust, the hitch will not fit.

  • Locating Pin Hole on Receiver Hitch Installed on 2010 Mini Cooper
  • The hitch pin hole should be accessible behind the bumper as shown in the photo I edited for you. You will need to reach up behind the bumper to insert the hitch pin. The Mini Cooper uses a Class I receiver. You should make sure that any accessories (like bike racks or cargo carriers) are Class I-compatible. Bike racks used in a Class I receiver will be limited to carrying two bikes only. I have linked you to our selection of Class I-compatible bike racks.
