Today we are going to install part number 13535 from Curt on our 2006 Honda CRV. First, we will show you where the hitch mounts up. First will be on the drivers side, on that frame rail right here. And then the center point, where the tie-down loop is, it uses that. And the same two holes on the passengers side, which is right now hidden by the muffler.
Our next step is to go ahead and lower the muffler. And it is a good idea to spray down the hangers with some type of lubricant. We will take down two hangers that are toward the rear of the vehicle, and we will slowly let the muffler down. And next we will go ahead and install the hardware for the hitch. It is pretty simple. You just run your wire from the rear-most hole out to the forward hole, install your plate, push it into the frame, and then thread it onto your bolt, and then pull the whole assembly through the frame and out the hole. And the next bolt, we do the same thing, except we use the same hole. We install our hardware and plate, we shove it into the frame and then pull it back out through the same hole. And then go ahead and repeat all those steps for the other side.
At this point, we can go ahead and install the hitch. On some hitches, large ones like this, it might be a good idea to have an extra set of hands. The next thing we do is install a U-bolt on the tow loop. It is a good idea to leave the hitch as loose as possible in case you have to move it around to get the U-bolt in place. All right, we will snug up all the bolts and get them even. And then we will give the bolts their final torque. All right, now we can go ahead and torque down the bolts. And the torque rating is specified in the instructions. All right, at this point we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. All right, and that concludes our install of part number 13535 from Curt.

I purchased Curt Hitch Receiver #13535 for my 2005 Honda CR-V so that I could attach a hitch-mounted bike rack. This hitch protrudes enough from the rear of the vehicle so that when the bike rack is attached it clears the spare tire on the door of the CR-V. This hitch is also very robust for this purpose.17198

Great product, easy install Hitch came via ground shipping in 5 days with all items in box. Installation was on a 2005 Honda CR-V AWD. Used ramps to raise the rear end for better access. Used spray oil to lube the two rubber muffler mounts and the aft rubber exhaust hanger mount. Popped all three rubber exhaust mounts free by hand. Fished all four hitch mount bolts with anti-rotation plates per directions with no problems (I kinked the fish wire to keep the plates separate from the bolts per instructions). Raised hitch to CR-V frame and attached hitch U-bolt to CR- V tie-down ring first (per directions) being careful not to bump the loose hitch frame mount bolts. Then, with two people, raised hitch flanges up to CR-V frames being careful not to push hitch mount bolts up into frames. Started one nut on the driver side, then started and snugged all remaining nuts (don't push nuts too hard or bolts will get pushed into CR-V frames. Torquing passenger side hitch nuts is tough due to tight clearances but manageable. Re-installed all three exhaust hangers to rubber isolators by hand. Install time with set-up and cleanup about 1 hour. Hitch frame bolt holes were in excellent alignment with CR-V frame holes. Found installation video helpful. So far, muffler does not rattle against passenger side hitch frame mount bolt ends. I have good mechanical skills and a good complement of tools. This is the second hitch that I have installed. Overall: very satisfactory. Standard delivery arrived in 3 days (to MA). Installation was straightforward once I got proper tools. You may need power or heavy duty wrench to loosen the M12 nuts on the frame. On 2011 Golf TDI these were 18mm (not 19mm as instructions suggested). The additional bolts supplied with the hitch were 19mm. I'll second another reviewer's suggestion for better packaging. I ordered 2 hitches and this one arrived protruding from the box, although not significantly damaged (the other was OK).54905

My only complaint is that the muffler vibrates against one of the installation bolts making a noise that requires either denting in the muffler to clear the bolt or some kind of heat resistant material to cushion that area.49141

Great product. Excellent powder coated finish. Installation was fairly easy. I thought I might need a lift but had no problem working under my car on my garage floor. I drove the back wheels up onto some pieces of 2 x 8 scrap wood, which gave me enough clearance. You will definitely need a helper to hold it up while you get the bolts lined up. I had to get the hitch because I have a rescue dog named Toby, who takes up most of the back end of my 2006 Honda CRV. I have a utility trailer now to make runs to the home center or carry stuff on trips. 32735

This was relatively easy to install. The kit came with 6 nuts and bolts. One of the nuts was the wrong size. A small issue. The tools for threading the bolts into the frame worked well. I had to read all the instructions to understand what I was supposed to do, but it went very quickly once I did that. It looks great and fits well. 29319

Bought hitch to pull a light trailer and sailboat. Took me longer than 20 minutes, but definitely a straight forward process. Installed easily and the video is a big help. The muffler lowers pretty easily, and doesn't require any prying like the instructions indicated. The fish wires work great. The wiring kit works perfectly, but took as much time as the hitch. Two tips: 1) do not screw the bolt all the way into the fish wire or you'll never get them off without destroying the fish - fortunately they provide 2 of them. 2) tighten the middle U-bold some to get it centered before tightening the outer bolts. 20581

Curt hitch item 13535 received and installed same day in ~1 hr. Fits perfectly on my 2005 Honda CR-V. A lot of time and elbow grease was spent trying to remove the muffler supports (note that there are 3 on this vehicle, one of which is near the rear axel). Definitely recommend watching the etrailer install video first and having a second set of hands available. Overall, based on a quote I got, doing this myself saved me about $150. Hitch was received in a cardboard box with other items (wiring assembly, ball mount, etc.) and no packing foam. Hitch was scratched in spots and that was the basis for my "good" rating. My concern about the scratches will lead to premature corrosion. 19209

Hitch shipped out the day after I ordered it (on a Sunday night) and was at my front door by Thursday. A friend who knows a bit about cars and I installed it together. Installation took about an hour once we got the right sockets (9/16ths is the measurement of the smaller nuts and took 2 hardware stores to find a socket that size for the torque wrench). Hardest part was getting the muffler back on. All in all, it was inexpensive, and not too difficult to install. The video was a great help. Definitely would recommend having a second pair of hands to get it on the bolts; even with both of us under there it took some effort to get it all lined up and screwed on, I can't imagine doing that alone. Can't wait to strap my bikes onto the back of my 2002 Honda CRV and head for higher ground!8684

Easy Install I installed the wiring harness and the hitch with minimal assistance from my wife and a floor jack. I didn't have a watch, but things went well and I believe the install took less than an hour for the hitch. The U bolt was defective and it broke when I tried to repair. Called, etrailer and the customer representative is having a new bolt shipped. Just watch the video and play it back to be sure you get each step. The muffler was not a problem, just a little spray lube and the rubber mounts came off. I can see where this could be a challenge if the rubber was old, dry, dirty and stuck on, but I had no problems at all. This CR-V was from the south. Good luck!2930

Top Notch Product Installation was for a 2005 CR-V. Price was right, ordering was a cinch & I received the order in 2 days. This was the first hitch I've ever installed myself and it couldn't have been easier. It took me about an hour to install laying flat on my back with my son helping. Tips for your installation Installation is not as easy as it would seem. The tolerance on the hitch as it lines up with the frame of the car is not perfect. A couple tips: The hardest part, by far, is getting the hitch onto the bolts once you have the bolts fished through the frame holes. I had the bolts fished through the frame holes in no time, and then I lifted up the hitch (by myself with jack stands on the other side) and the holes were close, but not perfect. While pushing it up, the hitch pushed one of the bolts up into the frame. UGH! So, it took me 15 minutes to fish it out with a dental tool! At that point, I put the fish-threader back onto the bolt and left it there as I fished the threader and the bolt through the holes. This allowed me to pull the bolt through and more importantly, to make sure I didn't push it back up into the frame. DO THIS TO SAVE YOURSELF ALOT OF HEADACHES. I destroyed the fish threader in the process, and on the other side, simply used electrical tape. Lastly, the first side went on fairly easily, and one bolt on the second side, but the last bolt on the second side was about 1/8" off due to the tolerance and line up of this hitch. To solve this, I pulled the electrical tape that was on the bolt through the hitch hole, then muscled it so the hitch grabbed just the tip of the bolt, and I had enough thread to grab with the nut. Good quality, OK installation If you are reasonably handy mechanically, you can install this hitch yourself. I have a 2005 Honda CRV. It took me about twice as long as they estimated, but worked out OK in the end. I found the part where you need to work above the muffler on the passenger side of the car very difficult. There are two hangers on the back end of the muffler that come off pretty easy, but the front hanger I couldn't get. Because of this, it was very tight working on that side. Feeding the bolt and plate through the holes with the fishwire was also not as easy as shown in the video. Don't spin the fishwire on all of the way or it will be very difficult to spin off once you have the bolt through. I had to bend the twisted wire off after the first of the four bolts, making the wire difficult to use for the other three bolts. It was very frustrating. Also, make sure you have a helper when it comes time to lift the hitch into place and tighten the nuts on. It is very heavy and awkward to do when you are underneath by yourself and if you are not careful you can push the bolts up inside the frame. The instructions mentioned that the hangers may need to be bent down to avoid the hitch from touching the muffler. I was hoping this was not going to be case for me as the hanger brackets are big and not easily bent. As it turned out, the bottom of the bolts are just barely above the muffler. It is possible in rough road conditions you might hear the muffler heat shield rattling against the bolts, but time will tell. I left it as is. Overall, I think the hitch will work very well. Just alot yourself more time and more help then the instructions indicate.1982

Very impressed with this hitch I just finished installing this hitch on my 2003 CR-V and I must say that I am impressed overall. I decided to go for the Curt because of the online installation video. I would recommend spending the extra couple bucks over the other models for the Curt because it is truly well-made and easy to install - there truly are no suprises like widening holes in the frame or any other crap to deal with. Just follow the video (the directions are fine, too) and you will be set. In my driveway on ramps, I loosened the exhaust hangers, put the bolts in the frame holes with the wire, and my friend held the hitch up while I hand-tightened the nuts before torquing them to spec. That's it - it literally took 45 minutes! You can tell it is going to last and be very reliable. I wholeheartedly recommend this hitch and eTrailer.com was fast, easy, and cheap - 6 stars!!1723

Be careful not to knock the loose bolts back into the frame as it is easy to do so and retrieval will be very difficult. Will recommend it to others. 1440

High quality, easy to install Overall, I'm very happy with this hitch. It is heavy duty and well constructed. The order arrived quickly and in good condition. Installation was quick and easy; however, it may be helpful if the instructions suggested to install the U-bolt over my CRV's tow hook before tightening the 4 main bolts to be sure it is aligned. Finally, the two bolts on the passenger side are above the muffler. My muffler occasionally would rattle against the ends of the bolts while idling. Grinding off the excess bolt length solved the problem.1265

Horrible Fit. Muffler rattle . The holes in the hitch were off by at least 1/2 inch. The bolts do not clear the muffler, so there is a constant rattle. I regret the purchase.1066
