Today on this 2012 Chrysler Town and Country were going to install a hidden hitch part #: 87451. This will be comparable to the draw type hitch part #: 75579. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost point of the bumper is 6 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 11 and inches. Now lets go ahead with the installation.
Before we can install our hitch, well first need to lower the vehicle exhaust. Were going to remove the rear two most hangers and the easiest way to do this is just to remove the fasteners that hold them to the frame. With our exhaust lowered down we need to go ahead and remove the fasteners that are already in the frame. Here on the driver side we will remove the 3 rearmost fasteners. On the passenger side we will just be removing the two rearmost fasteners.
Well be reusing this hardware so you want to hang on to each one of them. With all of our fasteners removed its good time to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch in place while you install your fasteners. Quick tech tip is to feed the passenger side up over the exhaust and then put the driver side up into position. Well install each one of our fasteners finger tight until we get them all in position. With all of our fasteners in place well go ahead and tighten them down.
With all of our fasteners tightened down well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Alright, with all of our fasteners torqued to specifications we can now go ahead and put in the AC line protector. With that done we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. And with our exhaust reinstalled that completes the installation of our hidden hitch part #: 87451 on our 2012 Chrysler Town and Country.

So easy, a kid could do it! My 10 year old son and I installed this Hidden Hitch Receiver on our 2014 Town and Country in about an hour, helping him earn a scouting badge. It was a breeze, went just as the instructions and video said, and looks great. The receiver clears the underside of the bumper by about 1/16", so there was no trimming required. Tip: Even once you loosen the exhaust system to get at the passenger side bolts, it's still a tight fit around the rear muffler to reach the bolts. Be prepared to pull it out of the way. This installation went really well because our van is new. The last time we did this was on an 8 year old van. Needless to say, the bolts were rusted solid. No amount of heat or soaking seemed to help. One even sheared off. Lesson learned: Don't wait too long to install the hitch or you'll be paying someone else to finish the job. 144625

This hitch is a perfect fit for my 2014 Town and Country. The screws and washers are already in my vehicle's structure. All you have to do is set the muffler loose to get it out of the way by unscrewing two of the rear muffler brackets and you are ready to go. It took me a good 45 minutes to complete the job and all the tools I needed were the wrench and three different dies with a die extension. It was easier than it appeared. The hitch structure is completely hidden behind the bumper and all you see from behind is the 2" receiver. Most important is that you do not have to trim or do any modification to your vehicle. Like I said: This hitch is the perfect fit. 158157

Trailer hitch is as expected. Overall, very pleased. There hitch receptacle is very slightly too low on a 2010 Chrysler Town & Country, maybe a few millimeters. It results in the receptacle being in contact with the bumper fascia, and a very slight bending of the fascia. (Only noticeable with careful inspection.) It doesn't appear to be a functional issue, but may eventually scratch the bottom of the fascia when the hitch is loaded with a trailer and bounces around. Installation was about as easy as described in the video for the 2010 T&C...although be careful where the video pointed out installing the driver-side frame bolts in a certain order. No fault of the product, but I ended up shearing off one of the bolts (ugh) trying to remove it. This is because the frame and body end up 'pinching' the bolt and making it very hard to remove and re-install. Several other bolts were difficult to remove/re-install. It's just a word of warning for any installation of a hitch like this...be careful. 246762

Took about an hour w/ my son... definitely not a 1 person job. The installation was difficult for us only because we didn't have the correct extensions to reach some of the bolts. Other than that, it really was a simple task... remove the 2 exhaust hangers (2 bolts); remove the 5 bolts; install included cover for one of the AC lines; fit the exhaust-side of the hitch first & get the two bolts threaded; then lift the other side & get the other 3 bolts threaded; torque down all the bolts; reinstall the exhaust hanger bolts; finally, marvel at the completed work. 124058

Great hitch. I installed one on a Ford Windstar in 2003 and now put one one on a 2012 VW/ Chrysler Routan. Please add the following to your instructions for 2012 model years: Step 1, Remove passenger side rear wheel to gain access to the bolt that is located in the frame that cannot be reached from under the vehicle due to the exhaust resonator. Place jack stands under the frame of the vehicle to prevent injury while the rear wheel is off during hitch installation. DO NOT RELY ON THE JACK TO SUPPORT THE VEHICLE WHILE THE WHEEL IS OFF DURING HITCH INSTALLATION. Step 2, Remove the exhaust hanger bolt now accessible from the passenger side wheel opening. Remove the forward bolt required to mount the hitch by pulling down on the exhaust pipe while accessing the bolt through the wheel opening. Remove the rear bolt from access under the car. (Reverse this procedure when re-installing bolts to attach the hitch.) Sorry, I was in a hurry and did not take any pictures. The wheel on/off step made the job take about 45 minutes, but then I am 70 years old and did not have a young wrench/socket chaser to help. Will do the wiring harness next. 92281

Installation went fairly smoothly, mainly because of etrailer's great instructional video (Search YouTube for "etrailer hitch 2013 town and country"). However, if you don't have access to a lift, installation could be much more difficult and time-consuming. I installed the trailer hitch receiver by myself and used wood blocks to lift it into position. Also, mine did not come with instructions (referenced in the YouTube video) which - I'm assuming - would have the torque specifications for the bolts. 130094

The hidden Hitch was stated as being a custom fit and it was. No trimming of the facia of the van and fit like a glove. It cost a few dollars more but you get what you pay for. E-Trailer has videos you can watch them install the same hitch you are going to by. E-Trailer is the best. 116856

I had just recently had somebody run into my truck that I was going to use to pull a trailer for our family vacation. It seemed that our vacation was ruined as I called around to rent a truck and it was very expensive to rent 1 with a tow hitch. I went online on a Wednesday night to etrailers.com to try and get a tow hitch package for our van. I then called them just to make sure I would get what I wanted in time. I talked to a ver nice lady in sales named Katie H. She told me that she would try to get the shipment out that evening for delivery on Friday. Everything made it, and our family's vacation was saved. With the great video they have to install everything, it was very simple to install everything from the hitch assembly to the wiring. Thanks to etrailer.com! I will be doing more business with them in the near future. It is nice to see that there are still good people to deal with. 21657
Vehicle: 2010 VW Routan The hitch receiver itself seems really well put together. I got it to support a bike rack, so I have zero worries about this thing not being strong enough. As far as install, it was really straight forward and easy. Especially with a friend. Especially if that friend has an air wrench. Although I do have a recommendation: don't install this outside when it is pouring rain! I can speak from experience now (the roof drainage system empties right where your face will be, haha)! I believe this particular hitch receiver must have been designed specifically for the Caravan or Town&Country (FYI, The Routan is a Caravan/T&C with a VW Snout and trunk), because it pushes up on the rear fascia quite a bit, and if left installed, will definitely ruin that piece of the van eventually. I plan on leaving it installed, but visually, you can tell that it is bending the plastic up. 131254

My brother installed the hitch in less than half an hour. I haven't used it yet but am totally confident that it will be as good as advertised. I plan on pulling my trailer to Florida this fall. I still need to get the wiring harness but will purchase one locally. Thanks for an outstanding product and fast delivery to Ohio! 135341

I was thrilled to receive the package in a reasonable time with free shipping. I found myself victim of my own poor foresight however. In order to comfortably install the hitch, I used a few jack stands while already parked on an incline. I can only speculate that having the vehicle so uneven caused the frame and the body to shift after removing the bolts. I managed to realign the frame and body by feeding a screwdriver through the hitch, frame and body weld nuts(in that order)while beginning the second of the larger bolts with the other hand. Also, I found it necessary to remove all three exhaust hangers to get enough clearance for this "DIY" procedure. Other than that, my torque wrench only goes to about 85 ft/lb accurately (but I'm confident it will hold.) Thank you etrailer.com for a great product and instructional videos. 63138
Great Hitch, Installation OK First of all eTrailer got this hitch to ne within 3 days, that was very impressive!!! Trailer hitch installation was not as fast as they say, it took me about 1 hour or so. I have a 2010 Grand Caravan and 4 out of the 5 bolts where no problem, the last one was a bit tricky. I was a heavy equipment mechanic for 10 years to give you an idea of my skill. The hitch is very well hidden, but to get a ball mount in and out is a bit difficult, but not horrible. Quaility of the hitch is very nice. I had a Hidden Hitch on my 3/4 ton truck for over 10 years w/o any problems, and I towed a 28 foot travel trailer allot with it. Bottom line, great hitch, installation a bit tougher than expected, but not horrible. I would suggest someone who is not mechanically inclined to have someone install it. 2781

I recieved my Hidden Hitch, receiver, ball, and wiring package from etrailer.com in days from my order. The enclosed instructions were good, but I did check out the etrailer.com installation videos online. I installed the hitch and wiring, by myself, on a Saturday afternoon. For my Grand Caravan, I had to drop 3 (under rear, at rear axle, near middle of car) exhaust hangers to lower exhaust enough to easily install the hitch. The torque settings for the hitch bolts are included in the enclosed instructions - no guessing, so you can pull your toys with confidence. This is the second hitch I have ordered from etrailer.com (got new car) - both came with great instructions. I recommend etrailer.com to all my friends because their products are easy to install and save you money!!! Thank you etrailer.com 23608

We ordered this for a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and I highly recommend it. From the time I ordered this product, I received great communication from etrailer. I ordered my items on on Monday and needed it for a trip the following weekend. I received an email that the items would ship within 7 days which worried me as I was shipping it ground and would need time to install it. A day or so later I received an email that said it shipped and when I tracked the package, it said it would be delivered on Monday (plenty of time). To my surprise it was actually delivered on Friday which was perfect as I could install it on the weekend. This items was easy to install, especially if you watch the videos on etrailer. I am very excited to use this new trailer hitch and happy purchased it from etrailer. 17194

the hidden hitch was an easy install, no trouble at all. the wiring on the other hand was a little more complicated due to the fact that the green wire from the drivers side to the passenger side was about 10 inches to short (could not get enough wire up to plug the rear tail lights in, passenger side tail lights), I tried everything I knew how to do as far a running the wire from one side to the other and the only thing I could do was to splice the line and add some wire (about 10 inches). after than I ran the black wire to the battery (plenty long enough here) installed the fuse and checked out the system and it works great. the trailer lights worked as they should. all in all it was an easy job but add a little more green wire to the wiring kit. thanks Harold Dudley 38526

I ordered a Hidden Hitch trailer hitch (fourth one) from these guys late one Saturday morning. The package arrived on Tuesday! Lightening fast service, good video help support on the website, and friendly representatives who email-confirm every step of the ordering/shipping process: what's not to like? My whole family orders from etrailer and all of us strongly recommend it. Regarding the product, the trailer hitch is great...very discrete and well-hidden, but the recommended wire harness was more troublesome installing in a Dodge Caravan '08 than the previous three I installed on other vehicles. Installation tip for '08 Caravan: be sure to have a breaker bar with a 10" socket extention to remove the existing bolts (this hitch uses the bolts already on the car). 26853

Although the installation did not go as fast as demonstrated in the video, it was a fairly simple one. I did not have a vehicle lift to use so I relied on a floor jack and jack stands. I am very please with the quality of the hitch and look forward to using it many for years. The ball mount seems of good quality and I like that the interchangeable ball and case was included with it. I also bought the American Flag hitch cover but it does not fit my van. The bumper is too close to the receiver and the cover is too large to work. I was especially please with the customer service. I was notified when the order was received, processed, and shipped. I was even notified that it had been delivered. More companies should give this kind of service!!! 35994

Thanks for the great service. Hitch delivered on time in good condition. It fit properly and the only problem was getting to the bolt on the passenger side over the muffler. Well satisfied. Thanks. 144237

Box was destroyed when delivered, had a few sizable chips in the powder coating. Installation was a breeze, exactly as the video showed. Fit is good. No problems. 97688

The hitch arrived in a reasonable amount of time for the standard shipping. I have two negatives, however. I used the factory wiring harness as my vehicle was still under waranty and had the dealer install the hitch. The first negative is that there isn't a place to install the light plug on the hitch so it is not installed very solidly. The second, isn't really about the hitch, it is about the American flag that I purchased to go in the receiver when I am not pulling anything. I will not fit in my vehicle as the receiver is too far back the flag hits before going in. The price was competitive and the dealer didn't hit me too hard for the hitch installation. 11445

Going in I knew I would have to have someone install it. Because of the weight and size of the hitch, the mech needed a bit of help,to position the hitch and start the bolts, and, due to the need to string the power wire under chassis, it had to be done on a lift. Installation of the hitch went quick. The wiring took a little longer and was not as easy to string between driver and pass sides as the video portrayed. The total job took about 2-1/2 hrs (unpack to out the door) Next time I am sure it would be a bit, but not much, quicker. The packaging was a beat up when the shipment arrived, however everything was OK inside the box. 51142

The installation went well on my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. The most difficult part was figuring out how to get to the bolt above the exhaust. Part of the instructions states to lower the exhaust, but it still doesn't move quite enough to make it easy. I eventually figured out that you have to get to it from the rear of the vehicle while holding the exhaust down. I was able to install the hitch in about an hour by myself. It was useful to have a hydraulic jack to hold the passenger side of the hitch up while I started the bolts on the driver side. 103873
by: Leo M05/26/2015
It took a bit longer than planned due to having to remove 2 more bolts to get the exhaust dropped far enough to get my wrench in place; but the installation overall was a breeze. The only tricky part was getting the first bolt reinstalled on the passenger side since the bumper bracket shifted slightly when all 3 bolts were removed...nothing that a screwdriver and 3 minutes of gentle cussing couldn't handle. The receiver fit perfectly and is very discrete, not extending past the bumper trim at all. Now I just need to put in the wiring and start towing. 198033

Installed on a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country (stow and go). Delivery was fast and everything fitted perfectly. If you are installing it without lifting the vehicle it is kind of difficult because of the muffler. The muffler brace by the passenger rear wheel is easy to get to but the 2nd brace in is impossibile to reach without lifting the vehicle. I took off the first brace and then had to pry the muffler out of my way while I removed the hitch mounting bolt and then again when I installed the hitch. I would highly recommend the product. 60498

The video instructions on line and the written instructions provided with the kit were great. Package arrived promptly and in good condition. The only issue of slight concern is with the wiring harness -- the green wire that extends across to the passenger side tail light is BARELY long enough. One to two more feet would be nice to be able to route the wire without having to find the absolute shortest route. There's a bit more tension on the green wire around corners than what I prefer. I could cut and splice it longer I guess. 27260

From the start, the purchase and delivery was so easy, free and fast. I really liked the new shipment tracking method provided using a physical map of product current location with the actual status. The detailed videos to install the hitch helped so very much and made my installation very, very easy. I did have a little trouble with the passenger's side muffler being in the way but got it done by the great installation video!! Thanks " eTrailer" for a tremendous product and the very detailed installation videos! 73262

I wrote yesterday in my problem that I'm so big I could not get under my van. This morning I took it to the local shop. I told him what I wanted and even told him how to do it. (He was inpressed that I knew). took him from the time I got there till I was leaving was 40min. Took time to pay him. He had no problems with the whole thing. (I'll do the wire later with the help of my son. He's small). The thing that sold me on this hitch was the video. Thank you for all your concern and productets. No Pictures 59987

Fairly easy to install and looks nice...works great. NOTE: Before re-installing the exhaust bolts, make sure there's some room between the muffler and the hitch, otherwise it will make a horrid sound when you start the engine as the muffler vibrates against the newly installed hitch, and then you'll have to shut off the engine, look around underneath the rear of the vehicle, and then realize that you need to loosen the exhaust bolts and hold the muffler off to the side a little while re-tightening them. :) 10203

I found the etrailer site just by accident when trying to get a trailer hitch and a carrier for my husband's scooter. My lucky day for sure. Item was just what I wanted, price was great and no tax and no shipping an added bonus. Delivery was very quick and ordering a breeze. I would recommend your site to anyone. I am happy with the products but rubber coverings on the holes cut for handles are about useless as I have to keep reapplying them. No biggee and I still find doing business with etrailers a plus. 17280

At first I was very concerned, as the package was extremely damaged in shipment by UPS; however, once we opened the box, we found no damage to the hitch or the wiring harness. It's a little harder to install laying on your back under the car, compared to having the car on a lift, but everything lined up perfectly and the instructional video was right on. I didn't realize that Chrysler had gone metric, so it helped to have checked that ahead of time and found out what metric sockets were needed. 38747

The Hidden Hitch 87451 was a snap to put in. The product is great. The instructions and video were excellent. Installation took 30 minutes using car ramps. I installed it on a brand new 2011 Town and Country. I highly recommend remove three exhaust hangers instead of two for ease of installation. Making installation even easier. Shipping was fast although packaging is poor. Not made for UPS ground employees throwing it around. Would highly recommend this product and etrailer. Thanks again 25599

Excellent product (2in hidden hitch & light unit). Your Sales staff we extremely helpful, attentive and polite. I received the product in 2 days. Installation of the hitch was less than 1 hour. The wiring about 1.5 because I ran the power line internal instead of external. The videos were extremely helpful (good work). I will not hesitate to use this company in the future or recommend them to another person. Again... excellent product & services. Tim in Indiana. 242899

The product was excellent and shipping was really fast. Only one issue and it was in regards to the install. In the instructions it stated you only needed to remove one bolt for the exhaust amd it would be able to move out of the way. Well wasnt the case for me. I eneded up jacking up the rear of my van so i could angle the exhaust side into position and then mount yhethe drivers side which was opposite of the ditrctions. Overall im very satisfied. 175431

I couldn't be more pleased. Ordered on Monday afternoon, everything was on my doorstep Wednesday when I got home from work. Installed with no problems Wednesday evening. I am a heavy Internet shopper and this experience was one of the best I have had. Great price, super fast shipping, everything I ordered was in the package, good install instructions. This install was HIdden Hitch 2" Class III on a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country. 20432

Was a little skeptical at first putting a trailor hitch on our van and what it would look like. We purchased the Hidden Hitch trailer hoped for the best. Box showed up and we installed it the same day. Incredibly easy to install and it took less than one hour. Hitch is barelt noticable works great for what we need (cargo tote and bike rack). Would recommend this product to anyone looking for an easy to install trailer hitch. 11511

Very well made and relatively easy to install. Couple of the bolts on the car were difficult to remove. The wiring harness was a perfect fit. Running the wire to the battery was a pain when you have to lay under the car.Realy would be better done on a lift. Delivery was fast. Excellent tracking. The packaging was not great and the box was burst in three location. No real damage other than some scuffing of the paint job. 16049

I installed the hidden hitch myself, and the fit was perfect! I followed the etrailer video Instructions & the install took about 2 hours. I used a ratchet strap to hold the tailpipe out of my way during the installation. I would HIGHLY recommend this hitch for similar vehicles. Michelle S sent e-mails that kept me informed about the status of my order. Will definitely order from etrailer again if/when the need arises! 246143

The hitch arrived yesterday and took about 20 minutes to install. It was an exact match to the car and the bolt holes which was perfect. Everything was in the box that I ordered. While I have not actually used the hitch yet because I have not installed the wiring, the great instructions and perfect fit were very impressive. I have found the future site for my trailer part purchases: Etrailer! Thanks for a great start. 43133

This is the second trailer hitch that I have put on a vehicle and this is definitely a two man job because of how heavy it was and the fact the muffler was right there. Even with the removal of the two bolts holding the muffler up, one person had to hold the trailer hitch up and the other person had to bolt it up while holding the muffler out of the way. Other than that, it was a simple and easy job. 19581
Got my hitch in three days. Installed it with the help of my son, you need two people because its pretty hard to hold up a 60 lb hitch and install bolts. Also, if the car is not on a body lift you need to jack up the passenger side to give enough room to slide the hitch over the exhaust. Other than that, had no problems, but accessing the bolts over the exhaust is a little difficult. 160516
I was very pleased with the hitch and wiring harness. The hitch was easy to install along with the wiring harness. etrailer.com was awesome in the product lookup, cost and installation instructions. They even upgraded my shipping at no cost. From the day of order to arriving in my driveway was 3 days. I am very happy with the entire experience. I would suggest them to anyone. 15153

I recevied my hitch and i reviewed the vidio how to put it on. thought it would be a snap???? Got all my tools together and the hitch. crawld under the van. Not enough room without rasiening the van so I'll try again. mybe find some one with a auto left. So far everything else is ok got th hitch about when I thought it would be here. I'll let you know later how it goes. 59967
The product is exactly what I wanted, and fit my '14 Grand Caravan perfectly. Even the directions called out the correct socket sizes for my vehicle. Customer service was outstanding! They shipped my order right away, and even upgraded my (already free) shipping. Couldn't be happier. I just finished placing a follow-up order, and will definitely be a returning customer. 125264

I received my hitch on Thursday, June 7th and installed it today. It took about 1and 1/2 hours to install. No Problems except that to torque the right rear big bolt i had to remove the right rear tire. Everything went ok in the installation and i am quite happy with the instructions and the way it went on. Thanks and i will recommend your products to everyone. Ken 43300

The video showed exactly how the hitch is installed, and when I did mine there were no suprises. Instructions were great, and it gave me good peace of mind to know that there is a tech support number I could call if I needed it. I saved $300 installing the hitch and harness myself instead of paying a local shop to do it, and it was well worth it. I highly recommend etrailer! 19854

We recived the Hidden Hitch in the time you stated. My husband and friend installed it, and the wireing. My husband was very happy, it went on just as easy as you showed. The U.P.S. driver that delivered the hitch said thay had ordered things from etrailer before and were always satified. That statement made us feel more at ease. Again thank you. Product arrived extremely quickly after ordering. Everything fit as expected, online video was very thorough and so I had no surprises during the install. I only wish I had an extra set of hands and a lift to make maneuvering the hitch easier. I used a combination of floor jack and wood blocks to get the hitch into position, then I bolted everything together. Thanks! 9836
Everything about the product 87451 was excellent. Free shipping for a large item made me even more happy I purchased it from you. The last thing I was impressed with was the fact you took the time to make a video to help people through the install. I had a general idea what I was getting into before I started. Thanks for everything I hope to do more business soon. 21914
Installation was a breeze, especially withe the online videos. I have but one comment to make, however. I was able to install this by myself with the use of a floor jack and jack stands, but it should be noted that on the 2012 Chrysler Town and Country, you need to remove 3 exhaust hangers to provide the access to the passenger side body bolts. AWESOME Product. 37994
Great and fast order status info and shipping from eTrailer. Installed this hitch on a 2016 Town & Country. Works and installs as advertised. It is a snug fit against the sides of the stow and go compartment. The receiver presses up on the under side of the bumper fascia about one half inch. It sits behind the outside edge of the bumper by 2.5 inches. 238879
