Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Express van, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the CURT Custom Fit Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers a 2" x 2" opening. It's part number is 14090. Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. You'll see we've got the square tube that's going to come all the way across the rear. Here in the middle, our 2" x 2" receiver tube opening. We've got a flush reinforcement collar around the end of it there as you can see, gives it a nice clean look.
5/8" diameter pin hole here on the side. We'll want to use Class 4-rated accessories. That's the hole we'll use to secure all of our items. There's going to be plenty of room on each side here for anti-rail devices, hitch pins and clips and things like that, so you can pick your pleasure in that department. Safety chain connection points are going to be a plate style here on the bottom. There's plenty of room to get those chains connected and keep everything safe in case of a disconnect. When it comes to weight ratings, the hitch offers a 1,000-pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening.
It has a 10,000-pound gross trailer weight rating. That's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we load up on it. If you move into a weight distribution set up, tongue weight rating is going to go 1,200, and the gross trailer weight rating, that's going to go to 12,000. Of course, we do want to check the owner's manual on the Express and see what it's rated for. Then we can go off of whichever those numbers are the lowest. A couple measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting our ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening; we've got about 16-1/2".
From the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 3-3/4". We're going to have 3 attachment points for our hitch on each side of the van in the frame rail. You can see we've got 2 holes located right here at the rear. Each of them's going to get a 1/2" carriage bolt with spacer block; just drop right down through the top. Then we'll keep going forward, and we'll see 2 holes pretty close together there. For our rear location, we're going to use that forward hole of the 2 with the same 1/2" carriage bolt and spacer block. With an extra set of hands, we're ready to get our hitch raised up into position.
You'll see we just guided over our hardware, then we want to thread on our 1/2" flange nut. Once we've got one hand-tight, we're good to let our hitch rest and get one started on the other side. We can let it hang there while we get our other 4 flange nuts in place. Let's take a quick look to be sure we have our hitch centered with our vehicle here, and we can snug down those fasteners using a 19-millimeter socket. If we look in our instructions, we're going to find the torque specifications. We'll want to use our torque wrench and torque everything down properly. That's going to complete our installation of the CURT Custom Fit Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 14090, on our 2016 Chevrolet Express Van.

On the positive side, the workmanship of the Curt hitch is flawless, and it fits my vehicle perfectly. On the negative side, I wasn't entirely impressed with the installation kit. As a manufacturer, it's probably not possible to cover every possible contingency the end user might encounter during installation, so maybe it is a little unfair to expect no trouble. Nevertheless, I was a little bit surprised when the "square hole spacers" included in the Curt installation kit, those 1/4" x 1.5" x 2" stamped steel deals that receive the carriage bolts, and whose dimensions are calculated such that the spinning spacer will interfere with the vehicle's frame webs (the vertical part of the frame cross section) enabling the installer to tighten the flange nuts without having to get a wrench on the bolt, were 1/4" too short and, you guessed it, spun! I guess the idea is that it should be easier for the installer to use the carriage bolt / square hole spacers than it would be to get a wrench onto a standard hex bolt. Of course, the spacer would have to be long enough to prevent the carriage bolt from spinning. Oh well, I was able to jamb a piece of steel in the gap between the frame web and the spacer and eventually get all six flange nuts / bolts tightened. The powder coating, under load from the the serrated bases of the flange nuts, peeled immediately. I have a nice new Chevy Express van, and I'm sure that the first rust stains on my driveway will be from the now-bare metal around the six mounting points. Oh well, maybe I'm fooling myself. I guess I would rather have an installation that I never had to recheck, never had to re-torque the bolts, and never had to worry about my hitch falling loose and my trailer passing me up at the next 4-way stop. If a little rust shows up on my driveway three years from now, so be it. Good product, and I would buy it again. But for a couple of extra bucks for higher quality powder coating, and a little more attention to the installation kit, Curt would have a first class product. 131110
I ordered this for my ’08 Express 3500 Van that came from Chevrolet with an OEM heavy duty hitch receiver, option Z82. The van is rated to tow 10,000 lbs but the receiver Chevy supplied is rated for 4000 lbs, 10,000 with weight distribution. 4000 lbs? That’s WEAK! So I ordered this Curt hitch receiver to replace it. I removed the Chevy receiver and had this one on in about 20 minutes. It fit perfectly using the existing holes in the frame. It sits about a half inch higher than the Chevy receiver but there are no clearance issues. I also ordered the Pollak GM Replacement 7-pole socket, mounting bracket and long no-drill bracket to complete the installation. Shipping was FAST! 63441

I finally had a chance to install this hitch on my 2002 Chevy 3500 Express Van. It was on a Sunday afternoon and I had to do it by myself. It could not have been easier!! I blocked up the hitch on 2) 6x6 timbers and then lifted one side up at a time. The mounting holes lined up perfectly and the bolts were long enough for me to get one started, on each side, one handed. So much better than other hitches I have installed. I would recommend to everyone. Thank you for a well made and easy to install product. Tim 132502

My Chevy Express is a 3500 series so I needed a Class IV hitch to tow heavier loads. This hitch weighs just under 50 lbs and was almost too easy to install. Save yourself the money and install this yourself. Curt is known for manufacturing solid well built hitches. You can't go wrong with this hitch! 215440

The product is great but the experience of ordering, customer service, shipping, and technical support were outstanding. The online ordering was easy and worked well. The shipping was spot on and everything arrived in a box that was incredible. I was worried that the hitch would be shipped loose on end up banged around but the box was perfect. I also found that the videos online were very helpful. I was worried that the wiring would be difficult but the video made the installation a snap. In the future, if we find a bigger trailer, I will be ordering a brake controller and I will surely be ordering it from etrailer. Keep up the good work and thanks for making this installation work out so well. 84131

The product was made so much better than I was expecting. Powder coating is terrific. All the parts I ordered came correctly and well packaged. Free shipping and was delivered in New England from the South in a few days. Etrailer supplied tracking numbers etc to follow the shipment. After opening the package and making sure all the parts ordered were correct and everything was there I placed all the parts out. Then put the hitch in place put one bolt in to hold....before I knew it within 30 mins the whole hitch, ball and wiring harness was installed. The step by step instructions made it so easy. 78039

Great fit and solid unit. Replaced an existing hitch that ws poorly made. Easy install and looks good on the van. Does not extend beyond the back of the bumper so no more painful shin hits. Use the shipping box to slide the hitch under the van to avoid scratching the paint on the hitch and raise it to make the install a one person job. Could have bought the lighter duty hitch from the same company due only pulling a small trailer, but over rating never hurts except for the additional weight. 201589
