Today on our 2012 Chevy Equinox, we'll be installing the Hidden Hitch, part number 87572. This is what our hitch will look once it's installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 13-3/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.
Now, let's go ahead with the installation. First, let's go ahead and point out the attachment points. Starting on the driver's side and the side of the frame, there are two weld nuts. Some applications: These will just be pre-drilled holes and you'll use a carriage bolt and block as fasteners. However, for our application, we'll be using the weld nuts that are in the frame.
Our next attachment point will be in the bottom of the frame where we'll be using the access hole here and installing a carriage bolt and block into the frame as an attachment point. Our fourth attachment point for driver's side will be in the center of the bumper beam. Once again, this is a weld nut for our application. Some applications will require a carriage bolt and block as an attachment point. These attachment points will get repeated identically on the passenger's side.
Just keep in mind. Each process we do here on the driver's side will get repeated identically on the passenger's side. Let's go ahead and remove the rear fascia door. Using a pair of needle nose pliers, I can press the two tabs together and then pop the rear fascia door free. We'll go ahead and set that aside.
With this application, we will not be able to reinstall it. Next, we need to clean out the weld nuts. First, we'll spray them down with some spray lubricant. We'll use a 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092. Thoroughly clean the weld nuts out and then I'll go ahead and take one of the new bolts and thread it into the weld nut to make sure they go nice and smoothly. Keep in mind that as time goes on, the more rust, dust, dirt and debris will build up in the weld nuts. In severe cases, a thread tab might be necessary to clean it out. Now with the weld nuts cleaned out, we're ready to install the fasteners in the bottom of the frame. Here we'll be using a new carriage bolt, large block, conical toothed washer and nut. To get our carriage bolt and block into position, we'll be using the pull wire provided with our install kit. To install our fasteners, we'll go ahead and slide the block onto the pull wire and then thread on our carriage bolt. We'll slide the carriage bolt and then block into the frame and then pull them both back to the same hole into position. At this time, we'll go ahead and leave the pull wire on the carriage bolt as it will assist us to getting our hitch up into position without pushing our hardware back up into the frame. Now, we're ready to go ahead and install the hitch. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. For our weld nuts, we'll be using the new 12-mm bolt and conical toothed washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch, and for our carriage bolt and block we'll be using the same conical toothed washer and a 1/2-inch nut. Now with all our fasteners in place, we can go ahead and tighten them down. Next, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all our fasteners torqued to specification, that will complete the install of our Hidden Hitch, part number 87572 on our 2012 Chevy Equinox.

Short of installing it's self my son-in-law and I installed this hitch for my 13 Chevy Equinox in just under an hour. The only tuff spot was the two bolts below the license plate on the frame. Patrick B - 5/13/2013What we did is use the fish wire and added a piece of wire to it. Then we fished the bolt and washer through the end of the tube and pulled the bolt through the drilled whole and then attached the nut, etc. I used needle nose pliers to grab the wire to pull through. Really wasnt that bad just caused a little head scratching. Hope this helped some.

Hitch fit perfectly, just as described. If your vehicle is more than a couple years old I would highly recommend professional installation though. Spent 5 hours with penetrating oil and a steel brush cleaning out the weld nuts on my vehicle. After that was complete the actual install was about 45 minutes. I'm sure the money spent on professional installation would have been well worth it with my situation. Excellent shipping speed and communication from etrailer, would definitely order from them again!57264
Another option to consider would be to purchase a tap for $10 to speed up the thread cleaning process. Infact, this might be a thoughtful item for Hidden Hitch to offer with the package or for etrailer to recommend and sell on the side.

Some times a tap is necessary for severely corroded weld-nuts. If not used properly though, the tap could easily break the weld nut free and the installation gets significantly more complicated.

Another great hitch from etrailer! This is the second Hidden Hitch brand hitch I have installed on 2 separate GM vehicles, this time for my 2012 Terrain. It installed just as easily as the video, in about a half hour. I chose this hitch over the Curt as it looked like this had a bit more structural support due to additional mounting point. It's very solid and looks very good on the Terrain, with only the receiver portion showing thru the rear bumper fascia. FYI, for those of you ordering this for a Terrain and need a harness, you may want to double-check to see if you have the factory connector, even though you may not have the factory towing package. I have an SLT-2 without towing package, but after checking the video on etrailer for the factory connection, sure enough, the connector was there and all I needed was the simple harness from etrailer meant for those vehicles withe the factory trailer package.54826

Hitch didn't fit the first time placing on 2011 Equinox, but after checking mounting brackets, I noticed one side was not at the same angle coming off main square channel. I had to tap with a sledge hammer and then fit perfectly..... also the hardware package did not have any fish wire included even thought it was required for the install... good thing I still had one from previous install! The packaging coming from etrailer (etrailer logo on box exterior) was not sufficient for shipment of this hitch.51330

We bought the receiver hitch for the wifes 2012 Equinox, It came very quickly and me and my son installed it one evening. All the bolts needed were there, the holes lined up, and the bolt installation wires made my son think I was a genius. Hitch fit great and I installed as planned. Seems pretty heavy duty and well made and finished. Only a bit of it was poking out of the box after shipping but no damage. I am perhaps less happy with GM who changed the mounting holes / no welded nuts in my 2012 Equinox from what the drawing showed so I had to slide in bolts and plates from end of channel since hole was too small, so I had to add an extension to the fish wire but it worked ok. The hitch mounted up snugly enough against the frame and stayed in place while I got all the bolts to align and thread fortunately since its not light weight. I have not started hooking up the lighting kit yet - paper instructions are a bit confusing but believe the video will help me more. Thanks. 48231
