Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1994 Chevrolet Astro Van

Today on this 1994 Chevrolet Astro Van we are going to be installing Hidden Hitch part number 87516. We are underneath the vehicle and we want to point out the mounting locations that we are going to be using to install our trailer hitch. Take a look at the driver side frame rail and look towards the end of the vehicle you can see we have got an existing bumper bracket and we are going to be removing this bumper bracket and using its fasteners to attach the hitch to the frame. That is going to be the same on both the driver and passenger side. There are three fasteners holding the bumper bracket to the frame and two that are holding it to the bumper. 00:30

We are now going to move on to the forward most attaching hole. You can see this one is very dirty. You are going to get that with most vehicles that have seen at least one winter. If that is the case, what you want to do is clean it out thoroughly before we get started. What I am going to do is take a spray lubricant like a WD-40 and spray it down. We are just going to take a wire brush like the one that we offer here at and it into the weld nut. Run it in there a few times and that is going to help loosen up that rust debris that is built up in there. You may need to do this several times depending on how rusty yours is. It is a good idea to do it a few times and then run your bolt in and out and you can see if you have got any resistance. If you do you want to repeat the procedure. We want to do that for both sides of the vehicle and then we can put our hitch up into place. 01:30

We are going to be using all new hardware to attach the hitch to the frame. Into each one of the weld nuts we are going to be using the ten millimeter bolts along with the lock washer and flat washer. What you want to do is get your bolts started until you get them all into position and then we can tighten them up. That is going to help make sure we can align all of the bolt holes and weld nuts properly. At the two bumper attaching points we are going to be using not only the bolt but the nut as well. You want the head of the bolt to be going towards the bumper. On the other side we are going to attach it using a flat washer, lock washer, and nut. 02:15

With all of the bolts tightened down we want to go back through and torque our bolts. You want to verify with the directions the specific torque rating for each of these bolts. For the torquing process I am actually going to torque the weld nuts in the frame first and then move in to the bumper bracket bolts last. Now that we have got our hitch installed we are going to give you a couple of necessary dimensions that you will need when choosing your hitch accessories. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is going to measure 12-1/ 4 inches and from the center of the pin hole to clear the rear edge of the bumper is going to be approximately 4-3/ 4 inches. That will conclude the installation of Hidden Hitch part number 87516 on a 1994 Chevrolet Astro.

So far it looks great! Took about an hour to install and it fits like a glove. I placed my order, received a confirmation and in a few short days had my equipment delivered to my house. It can't get easier than that. Thanks e-trailer! 112363

Working like a charm! I was hesitant to install a hitch on my van because of weight issues but it all worked out. Best decision Ive made for the van and for the business. Thanks!

The hitch came in a few days I was amazed. It came fully in tact with all parts. The install process was perfect. The hitch fit perfect with no problems.I tried to buy this hitch for the last 6 months because it is the only one you can use the full size spare tire in place.other hitchs you have to store in the van. This is the best of all hitchs. Thank you 160855

Great product, easy installation. One thing I would change, the hitch has the electrical connector brackets built-in, which I thought was great, but I used the 7 pin and flat 4 connector. I had to turn the connector on its side because the hitch wouldn't let the flat four part clear. 51223

I was hesitant to order a hitch offline for fear it wouldn't fit. After I finally talked myself into it I was pleasantly surprised. The hitch arrived 3 days later and only took 20 minutes to install. Great hitch. Heavy duty and sits tight under the van. I'd order again. 117899

Does this hitch replace the inside bumper guards?

comment by: John C - 04/07/2014

You will remove two bumper brackets, that connect the bumper to the frame. The new hitch will take their place so when all is done, there are still connection points between the bumper and frame ends. Check the instructions link for more on part # 87516

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • What do the Two Sets of Hitch Weight Capacities Mean, Weight Carry and Weight Distributing
  • The Hidden Hitch 87516 will fit your 2001 GMC Safari. The different weight ratings are provided in the event that a weight distribution system is needed. The hitch, when used with a standard ball mount and ball, has a 5,000 pound gross towing weight with a tongue capacity of 500 pounds. This is called the weight carrying capacity as the hitch is bearing all of the load by itself. A weight distribution system goes into the hitch and uses a set of spring bars to apply tension and spread...

  • The Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier with Lockable Lid and Cargo Bag # M2200-01-02 will work with the Master Lock Covered Solid Body Padlock # 141T. If you are looking for a hitch lock, I would recommend the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 7683. I have included a video of the hitch lock for you to check out. Both locks are sold separately from the cargo carrier. You will need a 2 inch receiver to carry this cargo carrier on your 1999 GMC Safari. If you do not have a receiver, I recommend the...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit on 2004 Chevrolet Astro Van with Full-Size Spare Tire
  • The Curt Class III hitch # C13035 will very likely have interference with a full-size spare, but we do offer both 1-1/4-inch Class II and other 2-inch Class III hitches that do not have this fit issue. The included link will show you three choices in a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch. If you prefer a 2-inch Class III that does NOT cause spare tire interference you can use either Draw-Tite # 75122 or Hidden Hitch # 87516. An install video on an Astro van is linked for reference.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2004 Chevy Astro Cargo Van
  • I did some research on 37042 that you referenced and its a Reese trailer hitch that worked with the Chevy Astro Extended Body 1990-2005. It's currently obsolete now. The Hidden-Hitch # 60841 you also have referenced will only fit 2006-2010 Mazda 5's so I wouldn't recommend this for your 2004 Chevy Astro Van. The most popular hitch we currently offer for your 2004 Astro Cargo Van is the Hidden-Hitch # 87516. It's a Class-III hitch and has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and tongue...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2003 Chevy Astro Van
  • The biggest difference between the Hidden Hitch part # 87516 and the Draw Tite Hitch part # 75122 is the capacities for either hitch. The Hidden Hitch part # 87516 has a higher capacity of 500 lbs tongue weight and 5,000 lbs trailer weight whereas the Draw Tite has only 350 lbs tongue weight and 3,500 lbs total trailer weight. Either hitch would work well for you as long as the one you pick has enough capacity for what you plan to tow/carry. I would go with the higher capacity though...

If you utilize a weight distribution system, the maximums are increased to 7,500 pounds total weight and 750 pounds tongue weight. Keep in mind, you can only safely tow as much as the lowest rated component of the system can handle.

  • Will The Hidden Hitch # 87516 Fit 2000 GMC Safari w/ OEM Spare Tire
  • From the information I found, the Hidden Hitch # 87516 will fit the 2000 GMC Safari standard chassis w/ the OEM spare tire size mounted underneath the van. I also contacted our representative at Hidden Hitch and he confirmed that the # 87516 hitch will fit your 2000 Safari, as long as the tire size is the OEM size. • Best Way to Carry a Mobility Scooter with a 2005 Honda CR-V
  • You would not want to use an adapter to go from the 1-1/4 inch hitch to a 2 inch receiver. Doing so reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. The other issue is that the tongue weight capacity of your 2005 Honda CR-V is only 150 pounds. So the combined weight of the carrier and the mobility scooter cannot exceed that 150 pound limit. The safest solution and the one that will put the least stress on the vehicle, is to tow the scooter on a small trailer...

I have linked several hitch install articles as well as a video to illustrate the process of mounting this hitch. It comes with all required hardware. • Depends on the weight of the pop up camper. The recommended ball mount is part # 3594, for a 2 inch ball part # 19258, for a 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118473.
