Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 1994 Chevrolet Astro Van

Today on this 1994 Chevrolet Astro Van we are going to be installing Hidden Hitch part number 87516. We are underneath the vehicle and we want to point out the mounting locations that we are going to be using to install our trailer hitch. Take a look at the driver side frame rail and look towards the end of the vehicle you can see we have got an existing bumper bracket and we are going to be removing this bumper bracket and using its fasteners to attach the hitch to the frame. That is going to be the same on both the driver and passenger side. There are three fasteners holding the bumper bracket to the frame and two that are holding it to the bumper. 00:30

We are now going to move on to the forward most attaching hole. You can see this one is very dirty. You are going to get that with most vehicles that have seen at least one winter. If that is the case, what you want to do is clean it out thoroughly before we get started. What I am going to do is take a spray lubricant like a WD-40 and spray it down. We are just going to take a wire brush like the one that we offer here at Etrailer.com and it into the weld nut. Run it in there a few times and that is going to help loosen up that rust debris that is built up in there. You may need to do this several times depending on how rusty yours is. It is a good idea to do it a few times and then run your bolt in and out and you can see if you have got any resistance. If you do you want to repeat the procedure. We want to do that for both sides of the vehicle and then we can put our hitch up into place. 01:30

We are going to be using all new hardware to attach the hitch to the frame. Into each one of the weld nuts we are going to be using the ten millimeter bolts along with the lock washer and flat washer. What you want to do is get your bolts started until you get them all into position and then we can tighten them up. That is going to help make sure we can align all of the bolt holes and weld nuts properly. At the two bumper attaching points we are going to be using not only the bolt but the nut as well. You want the head of the bolt to be going towards the bumper. On the other side we are going to attach it using a flat washer, lock washer, and nut. 02:15

With all of the bolts tightened down we want to go back through and torque our bolts. You want to verify with the directions the specific torque rating for each of these bolts. For the torquing process I am actually going to torque the weld nuts in the frame first and then move in to the bumper bracket bolts last. Now that we have got our hitch installed we are going to give you a couple of necessary dimensions that you will need when choosing your hitch accessories. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is going to measure 12-1/ 4 inches and from the center of the pin hole to clear the rear edge of the bumper is going to be approximately 4-3/ 4 inches. That will conclude the installation of Hidden Hitch part number 87516 on a 1994 Chevrolet Astro.

The hitch came in a few days I was amazed. It came fully in tact with all parts. The install process was perfect. The hitch fit perfect with no problems.I tried to buy this hitch for the last 6 months because it is the only one you can use the full size spare tire in place.other hitchs you have to store in the van. This is the best of all hitchs. Thank you 160855

Great product, easy installation. One thing I would change, the hitch has the electrical connector brackets built-in, which I thought was great, but I used the 7 pin and flat 4 connector. I had to turn the connector on its side because the hitch wouldn't let the flat four part clear. 51223

I was hesitant to order a hitch offline for fear it wouldn't fit. After I finally talked myself into it I was pleasantly surprised. The hitch arrived 3 days later and only took 20 minutes to install. Great hitch. Heavy duty and sits tight under the van. I'd order again. 117899

So far it looks great! Took about an hour to install and it fits like a glove. I placed my order, received a confirmation and in a few short days had my equipment delivered to my house. It can't get easier than that. Thanks e-trailer! 112363

Does this hitch replace the inside bumper guards?

comment by: John C - 04/07/2014

You will remove two bumper brackets, that connect the bumper to the frame. The new hitch will take their place so when all is done, there are still connection points between the bumper and frame ends. Check the instructions link for more on part # 87516

I had to use a port-a-power to bend the hitch about 4 inches at one end of the hitch before I could put any bolts in the frame. 15479

Expert Answers about Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" - 87516Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • What do the Two Sets of Hitch Weight Capacities Mean, Weight Carry and Weight Distributing
  • The Hidden Hitch 87516 will fit your 2001 GMC Safari. The different weight ratings are provided in the event that a weight distribution system is needed. The hitch, when used with a standard ball mount and ball, has a 5,000 pound gross towing weight with a tongue capacity of 500 pounds. This is called the weight carrying capacity as the hitch is bearing all of the load by itself. A weight distribution system goes into the hitch and uses a set of spring bars to apply tension and spread...

  • Maximum Tongue Weight for 87516 for 1995 GMC Safari
  • The Hidden Hitch part # 87516, has a maximum weight carrying towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds. If you utilize a weight distribution system, the maximums are increased to 7,500 pounds total weight and 750 pounds tongue weight. Keep in mind, you can only safely tow as much as the lowest rated component of the system can handle.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2000 Chevrolet Astro Van with a Standard Wheel Base
  • We have several trailer hitches that are considered a fit for your 2000 Chevrolet Astro Van. For this vehicle I would recommend a Class III trailer hitch to allow for greater diversity for hitch mounted accessories. The Curt # 13035 that you referenced is a great option, and is more economical for the Class III options. This hitch is rated for towing up to 4000 pounds and up to 400 pounds of tongue weight. Please note that if you have a full size spare tire this may interfere with the...

  • Will the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Fit with Spare Tire On a 2000 Chevy Astro with Standard Chassis
  • The Hidden Hitch Class III Trailer Hitch, item # 87516, will fit the standard chassis Chevrolet Astro as well as the extended Chassis. I spoke with my contact at Hidden Hitch and on the 2000 model Astro with a standard chassis the spare tire will fit under the vehicle with the hitch installed. Only on older vans from 1985 to 1994 was there an issue where the spare tire would not fit in the factory location. All this is predicated on the assumption that the spare tire on your van is...

Maximum tongue weight: 500 lbs, maximum when used with weight distribution: 750 lbs. • The Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier with Lockable Lid and Cargo Bag # M2200-01-02 will work with the Master Lock Covered Solid Body Padlock # 141T. If you are looking for a hitch lock, I would recommend the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 7683. I have included a video of the hitch lock for you to check out. Both locks are sold separately from the cargo carrier. You will need a 2 inch receiver to carry this cargo carrier on your 1999 GMC Safari. If you do not have a receiver, I recommend the...

  • Best Way to Carry a Mobility Scooter with a 2005 Honda CR-V
  • You would not want to use an adapter to go from the 1-1/4 inch hitch to a 2 inch receiver. Doing so reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. The other issue is that the tongue weight capacity of your 2005 Honda CR-V is only 150 pounds. So the combined weight of the carrier and the mobility scooter cannot exceed that 150 pound limit. The safest solution and the one that will put the least stress on the vehicle, is to tow the scooter on a small trailer...

  • Recommendation for Parts Needed to Tow a 4,500 Pound Trailer with a 2000 GMC Safari Van
  • First, it is possible for your 2000 GMC Safari to tow the 4,500 pound trailer. You will need to make sure you have a hitch that is capable of this much weight and also check the owners manual to determine the specific capabilities of your van. If you need a hitch, I recommend the Hidden Hitch, # 87516. When using weight distribution, this hitch has a capacity of 7,500 pounds and 750 pounds of tongue weight. Again, you will need to check the owners manual to stay within the vehicle limits....

  • From the information I found, the Hidden Hitch # 87516 will fit the 2000 GMC Safari standard chassis w/ the OEM spare tire size mounted underneath the van. I also contacted our representative at Hidden Hitch and he confirmed that the # 87516 hitch will fit your 2000 Safari, as long as the tire size is the OEM size. • Can a 2011 Hyundai Elantra Tow a Pop Up Camper
  • Depends on the weight of the pop up camper. If the camper weighs less than the capacity of the hitch you have installed on your 2011 Hyundai Elantra as well as the towing capacities listed in your vehicle owners manual you would be fine. The recommended ball mount is part # 3594, for a 2 inch ball part # 19258, for a 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118473.

  • Class III Hitch and Scooter Carrier Recommendation for a Honda CRV
  • There are Class III hitches with 2 inch openings available for Honda CRV's. Without knowing what year CRV you have it would be hard for me to recommend one though. If you have a 1997-2001 you could use part # 13314 2012-2014, part # 75742 2007-2011, part # 87440 2002-2006, part # 75690 Then for a scooter carrier I would recommend the MaxxTow 30x50 Wheelchair Carrier # MT70106.
