Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Acura MDX - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2011 Acura MDX, we'll be installing Hidden Hitch, part number 87474. This is what our hitch will look like once it's installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 16 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

Now, let's go ahead with the installation. Our first step: We've gone ahead and lowered and removed the spare tire. Now with the spare tire removed, we have access to the inside of the vehicle frame where you can see the eight attachment points, four on each side. These are weld nuts built into the frame by the manufacturer. Over time, these weld nuts will build up with rust, dust, dirt and debris so I recommend you go ahead and take some spray lubricant and a 1/2-inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092, and thoroughly clean the threads out.

I'll even take one of my new fasteners provided in our install kit and thread it into the weld nut to make sure it will go nice and easily. Now with that done, we'll need to go ahead and lower the exhaust. However, before we do that, we'll need to take a safety strap and put it underneath the exhaust so that we can control how far and fast the exhaust will fall. We'll go ahead and take some spray lubricant and spray down each one of the four rear exhaust hangers. There's one located on each side of both mufflers.

Next, we'll go ahead and take our pry bar. We'll simply pry the rubber isolator off the metal hanger. Now, we're ready to go ahead and remove the hangers. With all four hangers removed, we'll now use a safety strap to safely lower the exhaust. Next, we'll need to remove both heat shields above the muffler.

Each heat shield has a total of three fasteners. We're going to remove the fasteners and then remove the heat shields. Now with both heat shields removed, we can now go ahead and put our hitch into place. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch and fasteners as you install them into the frame. At this time, we'll just go ahead and install all eight fasteners finger tight. Next, we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Now with all eight fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch torqued to specifications and secured in the vehicle, we can go ahead and reinstall the heat shields and exhaust. With that done, we'll go ahead and remove our safety strap. That will complete the install of our Hidden Hitch, part number 87474 on our 2011 Acura MDX.

The product was fine and installed fairly easily. The videos are very helpful. Just a note on the MDX; the rubber exhaust hangars are pretty stiff when cold. Best to do this when the shop/garage is warm. Also, like most wrenching, its best to wear protective eyewear; especially if your car has a few miles on it. I had a lot of salt/sand/debris falling from underneath. When you are looking up at the wrench, its bound to break something loose that falls down (along with the lubricant) and is a safety risk. As for packaging and the item itself.... The hitch was sent in a box without any padding or packaging. The two plates had punctured the box. Unfortunately, I did not even notice until collecting the item from my front porch and dragging it puncture-side down damaging my floor. The package was too small for the item and poorly packaged which seems to be the biggest complaint on etrailer. Finally, I live in a state that uses a lot of road salt. Choosing the best protected (e-coated, powder coating, etc.) was very important to me. This hitch came with more deep (to the metal) gouges and scratches than I could believe. There was no problem with the manufacture but it sure made me wonder if it was a cosmetic second. The price was good, shipping and follow-up was excellent, product was okay. Plan to get some touch-up paint (easier before you install) if you worry about corrosion. 110175

Received the product within a week or ordering from They even bumped up my shipping from the standard 5-7 day ground to a 3-5 day ground for no extra charge. The product came 4 days later and was packaged fairly well. The box had been punctured on one spot but there was no damage (dents, scratches, or chipped paint) to the hitch itself. The installation took about 2 hours with prep and clean up, mainly because I was doing it alone using a jack. It will be much easier if you could have a friend help you out. The hitch fits perfectly and is very sturdy without looking too out of place or ruining the design of the rear of the vehicle. I have not towed anything with it at this time, but I have had a bike rack on it with up to 4 bikes and it has performed as promised. 12953

Opted to choose HH out of the 3 options for my 2012 MDX as some reviews for the other ones mention a tight fit - which made me nervous. A little bit over an hour of installation time, mostly spent on removing the screws, as the videos provided pretty much walked you through what you need to do. The only thing I would've mentioned in the video is that there are two rubber hangers. No need to use a pry bar. If you let the lubricant settle in for a couple of seconds it can be removed by hand. No issues in the actual installation of the hitch. Only removed one heat shield. Used an extension on my ratcheting socket wrench and it was doable. Yes, it would take time due to limited space but not an issue. Needed somebody to slightly screw in the fasteners as I held the hitch up. All in all was a very unfrustrating, all-went-according-to-plan experience. Oh and etrailer is the best, this is the 2nd one I've ordered from them, no complaints there. Only one issue, the "Hidden Hitch" sticker could've been more of a higher quality. It peeled right off - I would've proudly kept that there for the life of the product. :) 39170

A very nice hitch at a good price. Ordered on Tuesday and the product arrived Thursday - a day earlier than estimated by etrailer. The box was a little torn-up by UPS, but the hitch and parts inside were in excellent shape. I am not that handy so I studied the reviews/video and made sure my tools were adequate for the job before starting. I just followed the installation steps as shown and have to say that it is all very straight forward. As the video said, getting the hitch into place took a little jiggling and an extra pair of hands to get the first couple of bolts started made the task easier. Took a little more than one (1) hour total time in my garage (no lift) to install including prep and clean-up as I was slow and careful with each step. I have to say that I was surprised how easy it was and how quickly I was finished. The hitch looks great and given that it will be used to carry a bike rack the class III rating is more than enough for that job. I couldn't be happier with the experience and will definitely be telling others to use etrailer if they need a hitch. 41849

by: Pete B.03/08/2012

Ordered the hitch on Thursday and it arrived Monday using the free shipping option. Everything made it in great shape. The hitch was easy to install on my 2008 MDX using the etrailer video. It took me a little over an hour, no lift, and most of the time was spent searching for the right size socket to get the heat shield off. Small tip, you only need to remove 1 heat shield to get clearance for the hitch to fit. The hitch fit perfectly and 3 of the 4 bolts on each side when in no problem. The lower front bolt is a pain and I recommend using a smaller socket wrench, my heavy duty wrench was just too big. Once installed the hitch is extremely solid and looks great. The wiring is a piece of cake, total of about 15 minutes. Etrailer was fantastic and I could be any happier with my experience. I will use them again, no doubt. 33320

I have found the product, supplier, and support to be excellent. The Video showing installation was a huge benefit and prevented me from having to figure out clearance issues during installation. I followed the steps in the video and with the help of a friend we had the hitch fully installed in 1.5hrs. I did invest in a $34 torque wrench but when you consider the Acura dealer quoted me $834 to install a similar hitch and wiring harness it's still a deal, and I now have a torque wrench. The frame on my car is angled toward the rear and required the hitch mounting plates to be manufactured with compound angles that matched up to the frame. The fact that the hitch went right into place tells me the manufacturer put good quality control into their process. I'd recommend this product to anyone with average experience working on cars. 25598

The hitch appears well-built and fits nicely into the space. A few install issues. First, the hitch can be positioned with only one person if you get far enough underneath, head towards the front of the car. You can use your knee to hold up one side of the hitch while starting the bolts on the other side. As other reviewers state, the hitch can be installed by removing only one heat shield/exhaust hanger, but removing both heat shields makes it easier to tighten the bolts for the hitch. Beware of the limited room you'll have to sqeeze a wrench into place to remove/replace the heat shields and don't even think about using a long-handled torque wrench to tighten the hitch bolts, especially the bolts located towards the rear end of the car. 34208

by: Matt07/08/2013

Installation was just as easy as advertised on a 2013 Acura MDX. Under one hour including cleanup and setup, one person, no lift or jack. There is a extra muffler hanger near the exhaust tip on the 2013 (not shown in the video), but it slips off easily by hand if you push the muffler up just a bit. I recommend unhooking only one muffler and removing its heat shield and sliding the hitch up in slightly diagonally, instead of unhanging both mufflers. If you do the install on your back under the car, you can just rest the hitch on your stomach and put a couple bolts in on each side by hand by yourself. The partialy-obscured install bolts go in easily with a 10" socket extension. 88064

I purchased the "Hidden Hitch" Class III receiver for my 2011 Acura MDX. The whole process couldn't have been easier - I ordered the product, it was then delivered on time, as expected. The installation was a breeze - I had viewed the install video ahead of time and didn't even need to read the directions (except for the torque settings) - Saahh weeeet !! I will definitely use and recommend for any future towing/trailer needs. Thank you Peter Houston TX. 95890

Nice hitch. Packaging could have been better as rails were outside the box when it came. Install was as expected 2hrs but doable. Note for my 2010 acura mdx I had to remove 4 rubber hangers from the exhaust portion they are located on either side of the muffler/heat shields also came off. When you are positioning hitch into place slide one side just above one muffler and raise the opposite side up into place then you can raise other side up. looks beefy and tough was worried that it would stick out but with a hitch cover it blends in nicely 41502

The video was extremely helpful. Installed myself in my garage with no lifts. Took about 3 hours total. Most of that time was spent screwing and unscrewing the heat shields. Some reviews said that you only had to loosen one side of the exhaust. Ending up doing both sides (like the video said!) and it worked perfectly. Everything mounted to the frame very nicely and secure. I feel very confident in the product. All parts arrived QUICKLY (gave free upgrade in shipping) and in great condition. I will definitely shop etrailer again! 50609

Excellent purchase. The order arrived in 2 days, as described and all items were in perfect condition. The hitch itself was very easy to install, even without the lift. You just need to follow the steps from the movie to be able to install it in around an hour. As others have already mentioned, there is no need to remove second heat shield. There is enough room to fit the hitch with one shield still attached to the car. Again, excellent experience. If I ever need another hitch, this site will be the first place I will check to look for it. 51845

Great hitch! Installation was easy (you don't even need to jack up the MDX). I really appreciated the model-specific videos on YouTube. It gave me alot of confidence before starting the project. Toughest part was getting the rubber hangers off the muffler. My model had one-way clips on the muffler that made it a little more challenging than the video. I was able to slip the hangers around them by wrapping with some teflon tape. A few good tugs and you're on your way! 11941

Product arrived in great shape & instructions were very straight forward & simple to follow. Hitch looks great & have already started using it. 2nd time I've purchased from etrailer & have had a wonderful experience both times - both quality of products & support regarding installation etc. Will continue purchasing hitches as needed for new vehicles moving forward - great value & much cheaper than paying some local shop to screw in 8 bolts for 200-400 in labor! 102446

The product was ordered on Monday and arrived on Wednesday in spite of the fact that I specified standard free shipping (7-10 days). I installed it by myself, without incident, on Thursday in about an hour, using the video from the website as a guide. I am extremely pleased with the service. As to the product itself, it is sturdy, well built, and fit my MDX perfectly. It has been a pleasure doing business with this company, I recommend them highly. 51304

Ordered the hitch on a Friday, received it on the following Wednesday. All the pieces parts intact, hitch looked in good shape. Took the MDX and hitch to a shop to have it installed and after 45 minutes and little to no problems the hitch looks great and is ready for use. This is the second Hidden Hitch I have bought, the last for a Mercedes ML350, and it is the only hitch manufacturer I would consider. 47666

The Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver installed flawlessly. It was a perfect fit. The only thing I would suggest for future buyers is to oil and clean the threads on your MDX's weld nuts prior to install. It only took me about one hour to install. I saved hundreds of dollars going this route rather than taking it to the dealer. 100941

When you installed the hitch, did you put the truck on car ramps??Thanks!

The Hidden Hitch fits perfectly on my 2013 MDX. I'm fairly certain they make the OEM hitch. I previously owned a 2007 MDX and used another brand that fit horribly (required a sledge hammer to bang it in place). Etrailer also packages the hitch well so that it arrives undamaged. I have dealt with other venders that just saran wrap the product resulting in a banged up hitch upon delivery. 92339

This arrived quickly, though the box did not fare as well. It could have used a little extra packaging on the edges. It fit perfectly on my 2012 MDX and took about 45 mins to install. The video was right on point for the install and it looked great, pretty clean when it was all said and done. There is one tough bolt on each side but an 8" extension gets right in there. 54164

etrailer was recommended by a good friend with like interest. Service was very fast and easy to order. etrailer upgraded my shipping just because! Rcvd trailer hitch 5 day after order. Took about 2 hours to install including removing spare, dropping mufflers, removing heat shields, etc. Hitch is well built. Some of the powder coat got knocked of with shipping but a touch up with paint only took a couple of minutes. Spare fits just fine with hitch installed. Not much visible except the hitch receiver. Nice product. 62834

Hitch was very easy to install on my '09 MDX. I didn't have to jack up the car and completed the installation without any helpers. I only had to remove one exhaust heat shield to get enough clearance to install the hitch. Use a 12" socket extension to tighten the rear bolts without interference between the hitch and the torque wrench. 25413

by: Mitch M11/05/2013

The installation went pretty good but the muffler posed a little challenge. I had to wedge it in despite removing the hangers. The only thing I need to adjust is how the spare tire fits. I'll need to adjust the hitch as far toward the rear as possible. Right now it is a little tight. 106424

The free shipping came just one day after we ordered. Installation was smooth and took about an hour and a half. The video was a plus! Looks great on the 08 Acura MDX and saved us about $800+ that they wanted us to spend at the dealership. Love etrailer! 53223

Shipped pretty quickly. Installation wasn't a problem. It took more time to clean out the threads (2008 model so a decent amount of buildup) than to install (less than an hour). There is a great video on Youtube (better than the one on this site). 84916

  • The Acura hitch may be a higher rated trailer hitch than the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75614. Many times, we rate hitches based on how much the vehicle can tow, but this is not always the case. • If your genuine Acura hitch has a 2 inch receiver then we have several swinging bike racks that you could use including the SwingDaddy that you have referenced # Y02464. My personal favorite is the Thule Vertex, # TH9031XT because it has arced arms that space out the bikes a little better than on the SwingDaddy. Both racks feature anti-sway cradles and the arms can fold down when the rack is not in use. I have included some links to videos showing the racks for you. If you will be...

  • Weight Capacity of Hitch for My 2008 Acura MDX
  • There are several models of hitch available for your 2008 Acura MDX (see link). I would recommend the Hidden Hitch Class III Round Tube Receiver, item # 87474, which has a towing capacity of 4,000 pounds which is the highest rated hitch for your vehicle without a weight distribution system. There is not a Class IV hitch offered for the MDX. The highest hitch rating of 5,000 pounds, for your MDX, is acquired by using a weight distribution system which distributes the weight from the tongue...

  • Can a Trailer Hitch be Installed on a 2007 Acura MDX with Optional Rear Bumper Fascia
  • I spoke with my contact at Hidden Hitch. He stated that if the rear bumper fascia or garnish is not lower than the bottom of the tail pipes on your 2007 Acura MDX, then the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 87474, will fit. If the rear bumper fascia or garnish is lower than the bottom of the tail pipes, a trailer hitch will not fit. I have included a link to the installation details and a video install of this trailer hitch below.

  • Recommended Class III Receiver Hitch for 2007 Acura MDX
  • For your 2007 MDX, I would recommend the CURT Class III Receiver, part # 13354. This hitch will work perfectly with the rear bumper of your MDX, and will not require any cutting or modification of the bumper fascia. You can see a photo of the installed hitch by following the link to the product page. I will also link you to the install video, where you will see that the receiver opening will sit just below the rear bumper once the hitch is in place.

  • Is Fascia or Bumper Trimming Required to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Acura MDX
  • We offer 3 different trailer hitches for the 2008 Acura MDX and none of them require any rear fascia or bumper trimming to install. The Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13354, as an example, fits with the top of the receiver tube directly below the bottom most part of the rear fascia. I have included a link to the installation details and a video showing installation on a 2010 model. We also have a video of Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, # 87474, being installed on a 2008 Acura MDX like yours. I have...

  • Installing Thule Hitching Post Pro Folding/Tilting 4 Bike Rack # TH934XTR on 2011 Acura MDX
  • The Thule Hitching Post Pro Folding/Tilting 4 Bike Rack # TH934XTR that you referenced easily slips into any 1-1/4-inch or 2-inch hitch receiver. No professional assistance is needed. The Class III hitches offered for your Acura are the larger-capacity 2-inch size that have a substantial 400-lb tongue weight rating (tongue weight is downward force on the hitch) that should be plenty for your rack and 4 loaded bikes. If your MDX does not have a hitch installed you can choose one of those...

  • Identifying a Valley Trailer Hitch with Part of the Model Number Rubbed Off
  • I agree, it does look like the other hitches you listed, Curt # 13354, Draw-Tite # 75614, and Hidden Hitch # 87474. All of these hitches fit a 2007 to 2013 Acura MDX. That would make it Valley hitch 82111 which fits 2007 to 2011 Acura MDX models.

  • Trailer Wiring and Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2008 Acura MDX
  • The wiring kit I would recommend you use on your 2008 Acura MDX would be the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # C56038. This product will plug into your vehicle and will operate the brake lights and turn signals of your trailer, check out the installation instructions I attached. I would recommend you get a supplemental transmission cooler for your vehicle if you plan on towing. The factory transmission cooler is often adequate at best for non-towing situations, so a supplemental cooler...

  • Trunk Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2009 Acura MDX Carrying 3 Bikes
  • The Yakima KingJoe Pro 3 Bike Rack, # Y02625, would be an excellent choice for your 2009 Acura MDX. Of the trunk mounted options that are available for your vehicle this one is among the easiest to install and remove and will allow you to attach the bikes easily. Using a trunk mount bike rack on your 2009 Acura MDX would require you to remove the rack each time you needed to access the back of the vehicle. For this reason I recommend using a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack. My...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2003 Acura MDX
  • I am assuming you have a 2003 Acura MDX since the trailer hitch that you referenced fits the Acura MDX. I do have a trailer hitch that will fit the 2003 Acura MDX, however, the hitch that you referenced will only fit 2007 to 2013 models. For your 2003 model, I recommend the Hidden Hitch Class III Trailer Hitch, # 87454. This hitch was designed to fit the 2001 to 2006 MDX. I have attached an installation video of this hitch on a 2004 model for you to check out. The installation process...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2009 Acura MDX Thats Compatible with Full Sized Spare Tire
  • Of the three hitches we offer for your 2009 Acura MDX, only the Curt # 13354 would be compatible with a full-sized spare tire. The Draw-Tite # 75614 and the Hidden HItch # 87474 and the Reese 44594 that we don't offer are identical hitches, manufactured by the same company. These hitches are compatible with the compact, but not the full sized spare. Because of the unique way the hitch attaches to the inside of the frame members, the hitch can be a tight fit. The length of the hitch...

  • Recommended Locking Hitch Pin For Hitch Cover In 2 Inch Hitch On 2012 Acura MDX
  • The Virginia Chrome Logo Emblem 2 inch Hitch Cover, part # AMG100703 is designed to fit a 2 inch receiver like the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, part # 87474 you have on your 2012 Acura MDX. I took a measurement of the hitch cover for you and have attached a photo with the measurement noted. The center of the hitch pin hole on the cover is 2-1/2 inches from the back of the cover. This should fit your hitch just right. If you want to lock your cover to the hitch and deter theft I recommend...

  • Tools Needed to Install Hidden Hitch Class III # 87474 on 2008 Acura MDX
  • Minimal tools are required to install the Hidden Hitch Class III receiver hitch on your 2008 MDX. Having a power driver or air driver is nice, but not necessary. A 19,17 and 10mm socket wrench with extension would work just fine. A torque wrench will be necessary to ensure that the 8 bolts holding the hitch to the frame members are correctly tightened. Before inserting the bolts, you will want to ensure that the threads of the nuts welded into the vehicle frame are free of road grime...

  • Trailer Hitch And Weight Distribution Recommendation For 2008 Acura MDX
  • I did some research and you are correct that the maximum towing capacity for your 2008 Acura MDX is 5000 lbs. The hitches we offer for your vehicle are all Class lll hitches and rated for towing weight capacity of 4000 lbs with a tongue weight capacity of 400 lbs unless you are using a weight distribution system. I recommend the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch, part # 87474 for your MDX. If a weight distribution system is used the gross towing weight is 5000 lbs and the tongue weight is 500...

  • Recommended Cargo Carrying Options for 2002 Hyundai Sonata and 2011 Acura MDX
  • I believe a hitch mounted cargo carrier would be your best bet. In the interest of cost effectiveness, I would recommend you initially choose one of your vehicles as your designated cargo carrying vehicle. You would first need to install a hitch on the vehicle. I will recommend a cargo carrier that could be used on either vehicle, should you decide to install a hitch on the other vehicle at a later time. For the Sonata, you would need the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # 24713. Once...

  • Do the Curt and Hidden Hitches Available for 2008 Acura MDX Require Rear Bumper Trimming
  • The Curt hitch # 13354 and the Hidden Hitch part # 87474 do not require trimming of the rear bumper, but they do require the trimming of the heat shield. The recommended trailer wiring is part # 118424 and the recommended installation method is to have it come out of the rear hatch and have the door shut on the wires when needed. If you wanted to route it through a hole in the trunk floor board that may be possible, but we have never tested this method so we don't know for certain if...
