Today on our 2007 Acura MDX, we're gonna be installing the hidden hitch custom fit class three trailer hit. This offers a 2" opening. It's part number is 87474.Here is what your hitch is going to look like once you get it installed on the vehicle. As you can see, not a whole lot hanging down below our factory rear bumper here. You'll have that round tube design so it's pretty sleek. Kind of tapers in, nice and narrow, 2" opening.
This is going to be great for handling the cargo carriers or the bike racks even some towing duties. This is going to be rated for. Now we're looking at a 4,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. A 400 pound tongue weight rating for the hitch. Now for the vehicle, you'll have to look into the owner's manual.
Make sure your vehicle can handle that kind of load. If not go over whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Of course, as with all hitches, we'll have our safety chain connections. This is the plate style. So it makes connecting pretty easy and it will kind of help hold those chains kind of out a little bit.
There's also gonna be a bracket mounted right here. If your going to be attaching a four pole or seven pole wiring. It can give you really nice connection point, so it would hang down here and neat. You'll see the two holes, that are located here. The larger one's for your hitch pin to go through.
The one in the front not for use, with like a smaller pin or inch and a quarter pin. The one in the front is for the j-pin style, anti-rattle or locking device. Now let's go over just a couple of measurements that will help you in selecting your ball-mount, cargo carrier, or maybe bike rack. For the center of the hitch pin hole to outermost edge of the bumper, we've got about 4 1/4". From the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening, we've got about 15 3/4". Now to begin our installation, we are gonna lower down the our spare tire. We've got a small plastic cap here that says spare tire. Just pop that off and we're going to use our spare tire tool. Inside it's got the appropriate size that will fit right down on the stud and then, we'll just lower this on down. We'll just set our spare aside for re-installation down the road.Next step is gonna be to lower our exhaust by removing the four hangers. We are gonna have two located on this tailpipe. Two on this side. Before we do that, we're gonna put a- We're just using a cam buckle strap here. You can use rope, wire, whatever you've got. We're just gonna pull this tight underneath, just to give us some support when those hangers are no longer holding our exhaust pipe. We use a little bit of spray lubricant and you want to just hit each hanger with bit of it there. Once we've got these lubed up, we're gonna just start working them off the stud there. And to keep them out of the way you can just kind of rotate them a little bit. It'll be out of the way there. We'll just do that for the remaining three that we've got. Now with those separated. We'll put just a little slack in our strap here. Just allow that exhaust to have a little bit of free motion there but support if it gets too low.Having the exhaust out of the way, will allow us to access the three bolts that hold the heat shield on, on each side. Now we'll hang on to our hardware and we'll hang on to our heat shield because we will be re-installing these later. Now here on the passenger side, you can see the one, two, three and four holes located here in the side of the frame. Just behind that forward exhaust hanger we removed. Right here in the frame channel. We're going to be using these four holes and the four holes in the exact same location on the other side to make our connections. Now it's a good idea to use a little bit of spray lubricant. Put a little in each of our holes and then we are going to use just a small tube brush here. So that you can see, it's a nylon tube brush. We're going to use that to clean out those weld nuts that are in existing. Sometimes they build up some rust or dirt or debris, and it can kind of be hard to get our bolts threaded in there. Now if you don't have one of these. You can pick it up on our website. Part number on it's 814092. That'll make your job a little bit easier. Now let's clean those same four on the passenger side. Now, we're ready to get our hitch lifted up into position. It's been a pretty easy set up so far and finishing it is not going to be that difficult. We've just got eight bolts to put in and torque down. Just kind of guide it up and in here. Now we'll take our m14 bolt, it's 1 1/2" long and we are just going to thread into those weld nuts. Each side will get four of them. Now with all of our bolts started here. We're just gonna go through and get 'em all snugged out. Now we'll go through and torque each of our bolts down to specification. You can find that in the instructions. With our hitch torqued down, let's bring our heat shield to the exhaust back in. Now while we're here, we can also get our exhaust hanger put back in place for our passenger side. Now let's get the heat shield put up over here. Just like the other side. We'll reattach our hangers. With those back in place, we can take down our safety strap, and get our spare lifted back into position. With our exhaust back in place, that's going to complete today's installation of the hidden hitch, custom fit, class three trailer hitch. Part number 87474 on our 2007 Acura MDX. .
Average Customer Rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars (53 Customer Reviews)This durable, fully welded vehicle trailer hitch receiver features a powder coat finish over an e-coat base to ensure superior corrosion resistance.
The product was fine and installed fairly easily. The videos are very helpful. Just a note on the MDX; the rubber exhaust hangars are pretty stiff when cold. Best to do this when the shop/garage is warm. Also, like most wrenching, its best to wear protective eyewear; especially if your car has a few miles on it. I had a lot of salt/sand/debris falling from underneath. When you are looking up at the wrench, its bound to break something loose that falls down (along with the lubricant) and is a safety risk. As for packaging and the item itself.... The hitch was sent in a box without any padding or packaging. The two plates had punctured the box. Unfortunately, I did not even notice until collecting the item from my front porch and dragging it puncture-side down damaging my floor. The package was too small for the item and poorly packaged which seems to be the biggest complaint on etrailer. Finally, I live in a state that uses a lot of road salt. Choosing the best protected (e-coated, powder coating, etc.) was very important to me. This hitch came with more deep (to the metal) gouges and scratches than I could believe. There was no problem with the manufacture but it sure made me wonder if it was a cosmetic second. The price was good, shipping and follow-up was excellent, product was okay. Plan to get some touch-up paint (easier before you install) if you worry about corrosion. 110175

Received the product within a week or ordering from etrailer.com. They even bumped up my shipping from the standard 5-7 day ground to a 3-5 day ground for no extra charge. The product came 4 days later and was packaged fairly well. The box had been punctured on one spot but there was no damage (dents, scratches, or chipped paint) to the hitch itself. The installation took about 2 hours with prep and clean up, mainly because I was doing it alone using a jack. It will be much easier if you could have a friend help you out. The hitch fits perfectly and is very sturdy without looking too out of place or ruining the design of the rear of the vehicle. I have not towed anything with it at this time, but I have had a bike rack on it with up to 4 bikes and it has performed as promised. 12953

Opted to choose HH out of the 3 options for my 2012 MDX as some reviews for the other ones mention a tight fit - which made me nervous. A little bit over an hour of installation time, mostly spent on removing the screws, as the videos provided pretty much walked you through what you need to do. The only thing I would've mentioned in the video is that there are two rubber hangers. No need to use a pry bar. If you let the lubricant settle in for a couple of seconds it can be removed by hand. No issues in the actual installation of the hitch. Only removed one heat shield. Used an extension on my ratcheting socket wrench and it was doable. Yes, it would take time due to limited space but not an issue. Needed somebody to slightly screw in the fasteners as I held the hitch up. All in all was a very unfrustrating, all-went-according-to-plan experience. Oh and etrailer is the best, this is the 2nd one I've ordered from them, no complaints there. Only one issue, the "Hidden Hitch" sticker could've been more of a higher quality. It peeled right off - I would've proudly kept that there for the life of the product. :) 39170

A very nice hitch at a good price. Ordered on Tuesday and the product arrived Thursday - a day earlier than estimated by etrailer. The box was a little torn-up by UPS, but the hitch and parts inside were in excellent shape. I am not that handy so I studied the reviews/video and made sure my tools were adequate for the job before starting. I just followed the installation steps as shown and have to say that it is all very straight forward. As the video said, getting the hitch into place took a little jiggling and an extra pair of hands to get the first couple of bolts started made the task easier. Took a little more than one (1) hour total time in my garage (no lift) to install including prep and clean-up as I was slow and careful with each step. I have to say that I was surprised how easy it was and how quickly I was finished. The hitch looks great and given that it will be used to carry a bike rack the class III rating is more than enough for that job. I couldn't be happier with the experience and will definitely be telling others to use etrailer if they need a hitch. 41849

Ordered the hitch on Thursday and it arrived Monday using the free shipping option. Everything made it in great shape. The hitch was easy to install on my 2008 MDX using the etrailer video. It took me a little over an hour, no lift, and most of the time was spent searching for the right size socket to get the heat shield off. Small tip, you only need to remove 1 heat shield to get clearance for the hitch to fit. The hitch fit perfectly and 3 of the 4 bolts on each side when in no problem. The lower front bolt is a pain and I recommend using a smaller socket wrench, my heavy duty wrench was just too big. Once installed the hitch is extremely solid and looks great. The wiring is a piece of cake, total of about 15 minutes. Etrailer was fantastic and I could be any happier with my experience. I will use them again, no doubt. 33320

I have found the product, supplier, and support to be excellent. The Video showing installation was a huge benefit and prevented me from having to figure out clearance issues during installation. I followed the steps in the video and with the help of a friend we had the hitch fully installed in 1.5hrs. I did invest in a $34 torque wrench but when you consider the Acura dealer quoted me $834 to install a similar hitch and wiring harness it's still a deal, and I now have a torque wrench. The frame on my car is angled toward the rear and required the hitch mounting plates to be manufactured with compound angles that matched up to the frame. The fact that the hitch went right into place tells me the manufacturer put good quality control into their process. I'd recommend this product to anyone with average experience working on cars. 25598

The hitch appears well-built and fits nicely into the space. A few install issues. First, the hitch can be positioned with only one person if you get far enough underneath, head towards the front of the car. You can use your knee to hold up one side of the hitch while starting the bolts on the other side. As other reviewers state, the hitch can be installed by removing only one heat shield/exhaust hanger, but removing both heat shields makes it easier to tighten the bolts for the hitch. Beware of the limited room you'll have to sqeeze a wrench into place to remove/replace the heat shields and don't even think about using a long-handled torque wrench to tighten the hitch bolts, especially the bolts located towards the rear end of the car. 34208
Installation was just as easy as advertised on a 2013 Acura MDX. Under one hour including cleanup and setup, one person, no lift or jack. There is a extra muffler hanger near the exhaust tip on the 2013 (not shown in the video), but it slips off easily by hand if you push the muffler up just a bit. I recommend unhooking only one muffler and removing its heat shield and sliding the hitch up in slightly diagonally, instead of unhanging both mufflers. If you do the install on your back under the car, you can just rest the hitch on your stomach and put a couple bolts in on each side by hand by yourself. The partialy-obscured install bolts go in easily with a 10" socket extension. 88064

I purchased the "Hidden Hitch" Class III receiver for my 2011 Acura MDX. The whole process couldn't have been easier - I ordered the product, it was then delivered on time, as expected. The installation was a breeze - I had viewed the install video ahead of time and didn't even need to read the directions (except for the torque settings) - Saahh weeeet !! I will definitely use and recommend etrailer.com for any future towing/trailer needs. Thank you Peter Houston TX. 95890
Nice hitch. Packaging could have been better as rails were outside the box when it came. Install was as expected 2hrs but doable. Note for my 2010 acura mdx I had to remove 4 rubber hangers from the exhaust portion they are located on either side of the muffler/heat shields also came off. When you are positioning hitch into place slide one side just above one muffler and raise the opposite side up into place then you can raise other side up. looks beefy and tough was worried that it would stick out but with a hitch cover it blends in nicely 41502

The video was extremely helpful. Installed myself in my garage with no lifts. Took about 3 hours total. Most of that time was spent screwing and unscrewing the heat shields. Some reviews said that you only had to loosen one side of the exhaust. Ending up doing both sides (like the video said!) and it worked perfectly. Everything mounted to the frame very nicely and secure. I feel very confident in the product. All parts arrived QUICKLY (gave free upgrade in shipping) and in great condition. I will definitely shop etrailer again! 50609
Excellent purchase. The order arrived in 2 days, as described and all items were in perfect condition. The hitch itself was very easy to install, even without the lift. You just need to follow the steps from the movie to be able to install it in around an hour. As others have already mentioned, there is no need to remove second heat shield. There is enough room to fit the hitch with one shield still attached to the car. Again, excellent experience. If I ever need another hitch, this site will be the first place I will check to look for it. 51845

Great hitch! Installation was easy (you don't even need to jack up the MDX). I really appreciated the model-specific videos on YouTube. It gave me alot of confidence before starting the project. Toughest part was getting the rubber hangers off the muffler. My model had one-way clips on the muffler that made it a little more challenging than the video. I was able to slip the hangers around them by wrapping with some teflon tape. A few good tugs and you're on your way! 11941

Product arrived in great shape & instructions were very straight forward & simple to follow. Hitch looks great & have already started using it. 2nd time I've purchased from etrailer & have had a wonderful experience both times - both quality of products & support regarding installation etc. Will continue purchasing hitches as needed for new vehicles moving forward - great value & much cheaper than paying some local shop to screw in 8 bolts for 200-400 in labor! 102446

The product was ordered on Monday and arrived on Wednesday in spite of the fact that I specified standard free shipping (7-10 days). I installed it by myself, without incident, on Thursday in about an hour, using the video from the website as a guide. I am extremely pleased with the service. As to the product itself, it is sturdy, well built, and fit my MDX perfectly. It has been a pleasure doing business with this company, I recommend them highly. 51304

Ordered the hitch on a Friday, received it on the following Wednesday. All the pieces parts intact, hitch looked in good shape. Took the MDX and hitch to a shop to have it installed and after 45 minutes and little to no problems the hitch looks great and is ready for use. This is the second Hidden Hitch I have bought, the last for a Mercedes ML350, and it is the only hitch manufacturer I would consider. 47666

The Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver installed flawlessly. It was a perfect fit. The only thing I would suggest for future buyers is to oil and clean the threads on your MDX's weld nuts prior to install. It only took me about one hour to install. I saved hundreds of dollars going this route rather than taking it to the dealer. 100941
The Hidden Hitch fits perfectly on my 2013 MDX. I'm fairly certain they make the OEM hitch. I previously owned a 2007 MDX and used another brand that fit horribly (required a sledge hammer to bang it in place). Etrailer also packages the hitch well so that it arrives undamaged. I have dealt with other venders that just saran wrap the product resulting in a banged up hitch upon delivery. 92339
This arrived quickly, though the box did not fare as well. It could have used a little extra packaging on the edges. It fit perfectly on my 2012 MDX and took about 45 mins to install. The video was right on point for the install and it looked great, pretty clean when it was all said and done. There is one tough bolt on each side but an 8" extension gets right in there. 54164

etrailer was recommended by a good friend with like interest. Service was very fast and easy to order. etrailer upgraded my shipping just because! Rcvd trailer hitch 5 day after order. Have not installed yet but website video's and written instruction are sound, from perspective of ex Honda Engineer w/ lots of electrical-mechanical experience. 32824
This is the second Hidden Hitch I have purchased from etrailer.com. Just like the last time the hitch installed with ease. The videos from etrailer's website made the installation really straight forward. And just like last time etrailer.com had the best price, a lot of customer reviews and excellent customer service, shipping and follow-up. 88927
Took about 2 hours to install including removing spare, dropping mufflers, removing heat shields, etc. Hitch is well built. Some of the powder coat got knocked of with shipping but a touch up with paint only took a couple of minutes. Spare fits just fine with hitch installed. Not much visible except the hitch receiver. Nice product. 62834

Hitch was very easy to install on my '09 MDX. I didn't have to jack up the car and completed the installation without any helpers. I only had to remove one exhaust heat shield to get enough clearance to install the hitch. Use a 12" socket extension to tighten the rear bolts without interference between the hitch and the torque wrench. 25413
by: Mitch M11/05/2013
The installation went pretty good but the muffler posed a little challenge. I had to wedge it in despite removing the hangers. The only thing I need to adjust is how the spare tire fits. I'll need to adjust the hitch as far toward the rear as possible. Right now it is a little tight. 106424

The free shipping came just one day after we ordered. Installation was smooth and took about an hour and a half. The video was a plus! Looks great on the 08 Acura MDX and saved us about $800+ that they wanted us to spend at the dealership. Love etrailer! 53223
Shipped pretty quickly. Installation wasn't a problem. It took more time to clean out the threads (2008 model so a decent amount of buildup) than to install (less than an hour). There is a great video on Youtube (better than the one on this site). 84916

The hidden hitch was very easy to install on my 2010 Acura MDX. The instructions were thorough and I had the hitch installed in about an hour. The product was exactly as described on etrailer's website and delivery was free! 12295
Product arrived quickly and in great shape. The online installation instructions helped immensively because the included 1 page instructions while detailed don't quite show how to do it but only what to do. 53855

Great product. Fairly easy to install although getting the hitch around the tailpipes was not nearly as easy as the video indicated. Faster than expected shipping. Great service. Would buy again. 110195
