Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter

This unique coupler lets you tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch. It is air ride equipped to ensure that less stress is put on your trailer's frame than is typical with traditional king pin adapters. Simply replace your trailer's existing pin box with the Goose Box and you'll be ready to go.

Eliminate Chucking and Jarring

The Goose Box is designed to absorb road shock for a smooth, stable ride. The internal air bag can be adjusted to give you just the right amount of support, so you will lose the bounce but avoid the stiff, rigid ride that occurs when towing with an overinflated air bag. Also included in the Goose Box are dual shock absorbers, which ensure that compression of the air bag occurs in a controlled fashion. This extends the life of the air bag.

Cutaway Diagram of Reese Products Goose Box
  1. The air bag can be adjusted to provide a smooth ride for both your truck and trailer. Because it is fully enclosed, it's protected from UV exposure and shielded from road hazards.
  2. Dual shock absorbers help to reduce bounce and relieve stress on your trailer frame.
  3. The integrated pivot tube allows the Goose Box to move fore and aft, minimizing chucking.
  4. The gooseneck coupler attaches to the 2-5/16 inch ball on your gooseneck trailer hitch.

  • What are the Measurements of the Reese Goose Box # RP94622
  • I spoke with my contact at Reese before in order to get some dimensions. A lot of the build information is proprietary so they will not release it to me but I was able to get 4 dimensions that should be helpful. From the center of the ball pocket forward to the front of the Goose Box it is 7-1/2 inches. The width at the front is 11-15/16 inches. From the ball pocket center back to the nearest mounting holes is 17-3/4. From the bottom of the ball pocket to the center of the lowest...

  • Ride Quality and Safety when Using a 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter with a 32 Foot Trailer and F-350
  • The reason that ride quality suffers a bit with a gooseneck adapter like part # CAB-C5G, is because the fifth-wheel trailer pin box and framing are designed to be towed on a fifth-wheel hitch. The extra distance down to the gooseneck ball in the bed of the truck causes torque on the trailer chassis which in turn causes the pin box and trailer frame to flex, which contributes to what is know as chucking and bouncing. This issue can be worse with some trailers and hardly noticeable with others....

  • Fifth Wheel Trailer Bounce When Towing with a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 HD and Gooseneck Hitch
  • Trailer bouncing and rough rides are common complaints among customers that are towing their fifth wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch because the gooseneck adapters like part # AM3100. Gooseneck adapters create extra distance between the king pin and trailer hitch and this extra distance creates torque on the trailer frame which creates the chucking and bouncing that you are referring to. Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck coupler adapters are a good solution if you tow a gooseneck trailer...

  • Concerns About Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a Dodge Ram 3500 Equipped with a Goose Neck Hitch
  • There are several ways to adapt a 5th wheel trailer to enable it to be towed with a truck that has a goose neck hitch installed. The best choice for you will depend on how often you need to change between trailer types. Some of the adapters that allow this flexibility will put more stress on the trailer frame than other types. Options are still somewhat limited for newer vehicles like your 2014 Ram. A fifth wheel adapter that bolts onto the king pin, such as Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G...

  • Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a Gooseneck Trailer Hitch
  • Some trailer manufacturers will void a warranty if an adapter is used. This is the biggest con if trying to determine pros and cons. You will need to contact the trailer manufacturer to determine if the trailer warranty will be voided if an adapter is used. If the trailer has a Lippert chassis then I recommend using a Goose Box adapter because when used with a Lippert chassis and pin box, it will not void the warranty. There are 2 Goose Box units available. First is # RP94622. It is...

  • The Goose Box will not extend your king pin any further than the OEM Lippert 1716 pin box it replaces. To determine if it will provide enough clearance for turns, you will need to take a few measurements and make a few calculations. You will need to measure the distance between the center of the existing gooseneck ball and the rear of the truck cab. If the king pin extends past the front face of the trailer, the distance it extends should be added to the distance from the cab to the...

  • According to my contact at Draw-Tite, the Hi-Rise adapter you were asking about is NOT compatible with the Draw-Tite Remov-A-Ball gooseneck hitch. The mechanism that retains the ball in the Remov-a-Ball is not compatible with the post that the 5th wheel portion of the adapter needs to attach to. We do have some other options, though. From a ride quality standpoint, your best bet is a Reese Goose Box, which will replace your existing pin box. Two models are available for the more common...
