They are rated for Gross trailer weight, as long as the gross trailer weight is within the capacity of the coupler, the coupler is installed properly and the trailer is designed properly, the coupler will handle the tongue weight of the trailer. Proper installation of the coupler is the key to it handling the weight it is rated for and the manufacturers directions should be followed explicitly.

• An aluminum trailer does not necessarily require a specific amount of bolts for the coupler. But the coupler will require a certain number of bolts. You old heavier surge coupler was probably a lot longer and needed 3 bolts. The Fulton Fast-Lok Coupler, # F346000301, is smaller and only needs 2 bolts. The third hole should be capped or plugged or even run a bolt through it to help keep out moisture and road grime. I recommend that you get a coupler that has the same bolt hole size and pattern
