Shipping SpecialActuator has a heavy gauge stamped steel housing with a ball socket assembly. Breakaway mechanism sets and locks the trailer brakes in the event of tow vehicle/trailer separation. The unique pivot linkage permits a lightweight, more compact design. The electrodeposited enamel finish exceeds A.S.T.M. 96-hour salt-spray test requirements providing corrosion protection. The "Reverse Lock-Out" lever allows for easier backing up of trailer.

Today, were going to take a quick look at the Atwood actuator for 2-inch trailer balls, part number 82541. Now this actuator can be either used as a weld-on application where you weld along the edges here or a bolt-on application using these two boltholes. The boltholes are 3 inches apart, center on center.Included with the actuator is a pair of bolts for securing it to the tongue of your trailer as well as a brass fitting thats already been coated with sealant for attaching your brake line to the rear of the master cylinder. On the top of the actuator is our cap here for our brake fluid reservoir. Youll also find a steel cable with a hook on one end. This is part of the breakaway system. Youll attach the hook to your two vehicle, and should the trailer ever come separated from the tow vehicle the cable will pull tight and activate the brakes stopping the trailer.Up on the top is our latch for our ball.
To open, pull up and the tension is relieved on the wedge below and you can pull the coupler off the ball. Theres a tab welded on the back of the coupler latch that you can insert a coupler lock through either when the latch is open to hold it open or when the latch is down to secure the latch and prevent it from opening, which not only helps protect against the trailer coming disconnected while youre pulling it but also helps protect against theft while you might have your trailer in storage. The coupler has an overall length of about 13-1/2 inches. On the back, you can see a red plastic cap here that well remove and thats where youll install your brass fitting or your brake line. Theres also a reverse lockout switch. In its upper position, its in the towing position.
However, when youre back in up, you dont necessarily want the actuator applying brake pressure. To prevent it when youre backing down a boat ramp, for instance, youll push this toggle down and the brakes will no longer operate when youre backing up.Now well take a quick look underneath. Below, you can see the internal mechanism of the braking system. As you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, the momentum of the trailer will push forward, but the ball on your vehicle will push back and the inner and outer pieces will compress and activate the brake system sending brake pressure back through your drum brakes. Now to remove a ball, as we lift up the latch on top it relieves tension and allows this wedge to move. This trailer coupler has a gross trailer weight capacity of 6,000 pounds.Thats it for our quick look at the Atwood actuator for 2-inch trailer balls, part number 82541..

My old coupler had been neglected by the previous owner and was not salvagable. New coupler looks great and bolted right in place where the old one was. Even came with new bolts and 90° brass fitting for brake line. Only negative mark is the hardware is attached to the unit with packaging tape. When I pulled off the tape it left a sticky residue all around my new unit. Going to take some time to clean that off... otherwise, I'm happy so far.22530

Appears to be exactly like the old one which has lasted since 1984. 'It probably would have lasted longer had it been lubricated more often and not sat around so much. The order was delivered promptly. Thank you very much. Ric7165
