The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.
These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

Today we are going to review part number T4071500. This is the Titan free backing hydraulic ten-inch trailer brake assembly for the right hand side, which is the passenger side. This is a black painted drum brake assembly. Itll let you reverse your brakes in your trailer without actually hitting the brakes. This is designed for use with hydraulic brake actuators that do not include reverse lockouts. This will fit most 13-inch, 14-inch and 15-inch wheels.
This one if the right hand assembly and the way you can tell that is the smaller shoe, which can usually face the front of the trailer and the larger shoe, will face the rear of the trailer. The way to measure this brake assembly is the overall diameter of the shoes is ten inches and the width is 2-1/4 inches. This does use a mounting flange bolt pattern of four lugs or four bolts and the distance between those mounting holes from center to center is 2-7/8 inches both ways. You need to make sure the brake-mounting flange on your trailer axle will be four lugs and the distance between them is 2-7/8 inches. The diameter of both center holes is three inches.
This brake assembly when paired with a left hand side brake assembly will have a weight capacity up to 3,750 pounds. This is a black paint finish and again we mention this as a free backing design brake assembly and what that basically means it will let your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. What happens is when you begin braking up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum as in any braking situation and as you continue in reverse the shoes will turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and then you will be able to back freely. Another easy way to tell if this is a free backing brake assembly is normally the smaller brake shoe will be in sort of a D design. So that will let you know that it is a free backing brake assembly.
