Today we are going to take a look at Tekonshas self adjusting electric brake assembly, 12 for right hand side, part number 54801-007. The brake assembly is 12 by 2. We will measure across the shoes, and theres our 12 mark. Then we will measure the width of the shoe, and theres our 2 mark. When paired up with the assembly for the left hand side these brakes are good for axels up to 7,000 pounds, they are also covered by a limited one year warranty. The brake assembly uses a 5 bolt mounting pattern.

You are going to want to check your trailer axel, and make sure its the 5 bolt pattern. Theres a pair of wires that will run to our magnet. It doesnt matter which wire you use for ground and which wire you use for brake feed, just as long as you have a good electric connection. This brake assembly is self adjusting, meaning that over time you wont have to go back and adjust the brakes for proper tension. However, you will need to do that when you first install the brakes to get them set properly.

Once you have the brake mounted, you will adjust the star wheel to open the shoes and have an even amount of tension on the drum as you rotate it around. Once you have it set, then in the future as you back up your trailer and apply brakes, tension will be put on this cable which will in turn flip an activator that will advance the star wheel to keep the tension set. This is an electric brake assembly, so you dont want to use it on boat or marine trailer applications. We know that this is for the right hand side, because when we mount our brakes we want the short shoe to face the front of the trailer, and the long shoe to face the rear of the trailer. Electric brake assemblys work on friction as the drum rotates around the assembly while the wheel is spinning, and you press brakes inside the vehicle, this magnet will become active and it will stick inside the drum.

The drum will turn and drag on this magnet which will in turn pull on this arm that will then open up the brake shoes, and apply brake pressure. And that does it for Tekonshas self adjusting electric brake assembly, part number 54801-007.
