Today were going to take a look at Tekonshas electric brake assembly 10-inch, self-adjusting for the right hand side, part number 54801-005. This is a 10-inch by 2 -inch brake assembly. We can measure the diameter across this shoe, and theres our 10-inch figure. Then well measure the width of the shoe, and theres our 2 . When paired up with the brake assembly for the left hand side, these brakes are good for trailer axles that are rated up to 3500 pounds. Its going to mount using these four bolts that are already pressed into the assembly.
Make sure to check your axle to see if you have this proper bolt pattern. Theres a pair of wires that you will use for your electrical connections. It doesnt matter which you use for ground and which you use for power as long as you have a good electrical connection. This is a self-adjusting brake setup. When you first install the breaks, youre going to need to manually turn the star wheel to get the proper tension set.
What youve done next, as you back up the trailer with the brakes applied, it will pull this cable system which pulls a little flipper that will automatically advance the star wheel and add the proper amount of tension. Again, you need to make sure you properly tension the brake when you first install it in order for the whole system to work properly. You can tell that this is for the right hand side, because our short shoe here will face the front and a long shoe issue here will face the rear. The way the electric brake assembly works is this wheel and drum is rotating around the assembly and youll apply brakes inside the tow vehicle, this magnet will become charged, and will stick to the inside of the drum. As the drum drags along the magnet, its going to pull this arm which in turn will open our shoe assemblies and apply brake pressure.
