Video Transcript for Dexter 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" Left Hand Electric Trailer Brakes Review

Today, we're going to show you Dexter Self-Adjusting Electric Brake Assembly for Left-Hand Side, part number 23-434. This is a 12-1/4" by 3-3/8" brake assembly. We'll measure the diameter across the shoes and there is 12-1/4". And we'll measure the width of the shoes and there is 3-3/8". When paired up with the right-hand side brake assembly, these brakes are good for use on trailer axles rated at 8,000 or 9,000 pounds. It uses a 4 bolt mounting pattern.

So you want to check your axle to make sure these will fit. There is a pair of wire leads that you use for your electrical connections. It doesn't matter which one you use for ground and which one you use for your power feed just as long as you have a good electrical connection. This is a self-adjusting system, meaning that when you first install the brakes, you will need to manually adjust them and set the proper tension. You'll adjust enough when there is an even amount of light drag all the way around the hub.

Once you have set up the first time, every time you back up the trailer with the brakes applied, this cable will be pulled and if some slightness is to be taken out, the star wheel will automatically be advanced. This is an electric brake assembly. So you want to make sure not to use it on boat or marine trailer applications. The way the assembly works, as the wheel and hub is spinning around and you apply brakes inside the vehicle, this magnet will be activated that will attach to the hub drum inside. As the hub drum drags on the magnet, you'll pull this arm, which in turn opens up the brake shoes and applies pressure.

We know that this is for left-hand side. We have the short shoe that needs to face the further trailer and the long shoe that will need to face towards the back. And that does it for the Dexter Self-Adjusting Electric Brake Assembly for Left-Hand Side, part number 23-434.

  • Trailer Brake Assemblies for 12 X 3-3/8 inch Brakes with 4 Mounting Holes on a 1991 Kountry Aire
  • I checked with my contact at our supplier and found that the axles on your trailer are one of two brands. With the 4 bolt pattern they are either Hayes/AL-KO, 8,000 lb. axles with 12 by 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies or they are Dexter 10,000 lb. axles with 12-1/4 by 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies. If your brake assemblies are the 12-1/4 by 3-3/8 inch assemblies and you have the Dexter 10,000 lb. axles then you can use the # 23-434 and # 23-435 assemblies to replace your trailer brake assemblies....

  • Brake Assembly Recommendation for a 1983 Hayes Axle with a 9,000 lb Capacity
  • The Hayes/AL-KO 12 inch Electric Brake Assembly # 185100 that you referenced is designed to fit on the standard 4 bolt pattern for brake assemblies and should bolt right up to your 1983 Hayes axle as long as it also is the standard 4 bolt pattern. Magnets do come in various sizes and varying strengths. It is recommended that you replace brake assemblies in pairs so that you have even braking on both sides. Since you have 9,000 lb axles you may be interested in purchasing brake assemblies...

  • 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes for 9K and 10K Trailer Axles
  • There are 2 different sets of 12-1/4 x 3-3/8 inch brake assemblies and the difference between them is the mounting patterns they have. Electric brakes # 23-450 and # 23-451 will bolt to either a 5-hole or 7-hole mounting flange and they are for 9K to 10K axles which is what the hub # 9-44-1 is for. Electric brakes # 23-434 and # 23-435 will bolt to a 4-hole flange. So if you look at the flange your brakes are mounted to now and see just 4 holes in a square pattern you would use...
