Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Dexter Trailer Axles T20BTR-EZ-6048 Review

Today we're going to review part number T20BTR-EZ-6048. This is the Dexter Idler Trailer Axle with the straight EZ-Lube Spindles. This is 60" in length and a 2,200 lb weight capacity. Now, this axle beam will act as part of your trailer suspension system. You can use it to replace an axle on your trailer or to fabricate a suspension to fit your application. When we ship it, it is shipped with the spindle nut, a D-washer, and the nut retainer on each end.

And actually, when we do ship these, we don't ship them just bare like this. We actually put grease over them to protect the machine finish on each end and then we have a very sturdy corrugated tube that would slip over and then it's taped into place to also help protect the spindle on the end. Now, this is a idler axle, which basically means there are no brake mounting flanges on it, so it is designed to used idler hubs. It is made of a high-strength steel. It has the straight EZ-Lube spindles. There is no drop, they're just straight.

And the EZ-Lube spindles, they do have the grease zerk fitting, which is right in the very end here. This allows you to install a grease gun onto the end and pump your grease in after your hub's been put on, so it's very simple. It saves you time. Instead of having to take your whole hub off and then grease the bearings and then put them all back together, this you can just have your hub and bearings all installed, pump the grease right in here. It goes through, there's a little hole right here where it will come out and it'll fill that cavity with the grease.

Very simple lubrication. Now also, on this axle, which all axles you'll notice will have a bend, a slight bend, in the center of the axle. Basically, the reason they're manufactured that way is that will create a certain camber angle for your tires and wheels. Having the center ride a bit higher and then the sides of the axle bit lower allows that axle to give just enough to compensate when the load is put on your trailer. So, once the trailer is loaded down, this axle will give so the axle would be even all the way across. Then this will give you the correct angle of the wheels for your towing needs and allows your trailer tires to run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the full width of the tread.

So, this will give you a result is an excellent straight line acceleration for steady in-line tracking. Now, on this axle, you'll notice the spring seats are on the underside. This is called a underslung design axle. They're welded to the underside of the axle for mounting your lee springs to. The lee springs we do sell separately. The reason they're on the underside, it'll give you a low ride height, which makes it easier to load and unload your trailer. Now, the spring seats and the spindle themselves are welded onto the axle. Now, also, when you measure an axle, there's multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the 2 most accurate are going to be the hub-face to hub-face, and the spring-center to spring-center lengths. Basically, the hub-face to hub-face would be once you have your idler hub installed on here and one on the other end, you would take from the base of one wheel stud on your hub to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle. So basically, if you did that on this axle, the hub-face to hub-face is going to be 60", which is basically the length of the axle. Now, the spring-center to spring-center is basically the approximate width of your trailer and it's measured from the center of the spring seat on this side to the center of the spring seat on the other side. So again, if we put the ruler on this, center to center's going to be right at 48" for the spring seat to spring seat measurement. So basically, if you're replacing your trailer's axle you should be able to figure out which type you need by using these measurements, Use your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of the wheels you're going to be using and the brake type if any brakes are going to be used. Now, the weight capacity on this axle is 2,200 lbs. Again, I mentioned the hub-face to hub-face length is 60". The spring-center to spring-center length is 48". The outer diameter of the tubing, right here, of the axle is 1 3/4" and the diameter of the spindle itself is 1 1/16". But that should do it for the review on part number T20BTR-EZ-6048, the Dexter Idler Trailer Axle with the straight EZ-Lube Spindles. .

I rarely write reviews or respond to requests to review purchases but in this case I feel I must. The items I purchased to repair my very old and nearly defunct boat trailer were just exactly what was needed. Not only did everything fit perfectly but the price was unbeatable!! I would definitely purchase here again. Thank you for great quality products at a very reasonable price. 304382

Dexter Axle is a direct drop in replacement for a bent one. Arrived quickly and had protectors on the ends. Old hubs fit nicely but order at least inside bearing seals it is important for the ez lube to work well they not leak. and you'll need to remove them to repack the inside bearings anyways. 151202

Do you have a question about this Trailer Axle?

  • Replacement Trailer Axle for a Carry On 5x8 Foot Utility Trailer
  • We may not have a straight axle solution but we do have axle-less options. I have included a link to them for you. The great thing about these systems is that they have the suspension built in, sort of like a torsion axle. And ground clearance is improved because there is no axle hanging down. We carry the most common sizes of straight axles in the lower capacities but axles can literally be any size so its tough to carry them all. If none of the straight axles we have will fit and you...

  • Can the Dexter Trailer Axles # T20BTR-EZ-6048 have the Spring Seats Moved to Top of Axle
  • We don't sell the Dexter Trailer Axles # T20BTR-EZ-6048 with the spring seat on top of the axle so that it could be installed overslung. But, what you can do is get the # TRSS175 and then have a qualified welder install this spring seat on the top of the axle so that you could install it in the configuration you need to.

  • Can E-Z Lube Hubs be Installed on Trailer Axle Without E-Z Lube Fittings
  • E-Z Lube hubs like # 84550UC1-EZ that you referenced are intended for use on axles that are equipped with E-Z Lube spindles. They feature removable plugs that pop out to provide access to the grease zerk fitting in the end of the spindle. Adding an E-Z Lube hub to a regular axle will not provide the E-Z Lube functionality but if the bearing set is the same as your original hubs then they may be used as substitutes but without the E-Z Lube feature. • Converting a Mobile Home Axle to 5 on 4.5 Pattern
  • I have a possible solution for you but, mobile home axles are typically very difficult to change over because the manufacturer uses odd sized parts to assemble them. Once they go bad its more trouble than its worth to replace specific items, especially the spindles. It is difficult to find replacement parts for a mobile home axle because they were designed for one time use only. Unfortunately, there isn't a kit for something like this. I recommend getting a new standard trailer axle...

  • Brake mounting flanges like part # 4-34 could be welded to the axle you referenced. The spindles are compatible with the L44649 wheel bearings. If you needed a hub with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, use the # 8-173-16UC3-EZ hub drum and the # 23-47 and # 23-48 brake assemblies. You'd also need 4 nuts # 6-17 and # 5-8 lock washers per brake assembly. If you needed a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, go with the # 8-257-5UC3-EZ hub drum along with the brake assemblies and hardware mentioned above.
