Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"

Today, we're going to review part number AM3S331. This is a Kenda Loadstar Tire size ST185/80D13. It's a bias trailer tire. It's mounted on a 13-inch Dexstar white spoke wheel. This wheel has a white powder coat finish for superior corrosion resistance on the front and on the back. A few measurements we'll do on this wheel is the diameter, which is 13 inches.

It will be measured from the inside to inside. It would be 13 inches. The width of this wheel would be 4-1/2 inches wide. The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5-bolt, 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. And there are a couple of ways you can go by measuring the bolt pattern on your wheel, especially if it's an odd number of lug bolts like this one, being five lugs.

The first way is if you draw a circle through the center of all five lug holes and then measure the diameter of that circle. So in this case, we'll measure from the center of this bolt hole to that outer edge of that circle. It would be 4-1/2 inches. That will be a 5 on 4-1/2-inch wheel. Another way is you could measure from the center of this bolt hole and you can go to a bolt hole right next to it to the center.

If you do that measurement, it will give you 2-5/8 inches. And what you need to do is go to the product page for this wheel and tire part number, and at the bottom of the page we list measurements that if it says 2-5/8, it will mean it's a 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. This wheel also has a capacity of 1660 lbs at 65 psi. It uses a wheel bolt size of a 1/2 inch by 20. Another critical measurement is the pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here on the center of the wheel.

This will go over the hub on your trailer. When we measure the diameter of this pilot hole, it would be 3.19 inches. Now, we'll move on to the tire. The tire is a Loadstar. Again, the size is ST for Special Trailer, 185/80D13. The D signifies it is a bias belted tire. This tire has a load range D, which means it is an 8-ply rated tire. This tire has a maximum load capacity of 1725 lbs at 65 psi. And we'll measure the overall diameter of this tire and it is 24-1/2 inches. This tire is of bias construction, which will mean that the belts, when it's built inside the tire, will run the length of the tire, as opposed to a radial where they run from bead to bead. A bias tire, the side wall will be a little bit firmer when compared to a radial designed tire. This tire and wheel combo has a limited two-year warranty. And that should do it for part number AM3S331.

I have found a few tires and wheels, load range D, 13 inch, 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern that do have metal valve stems. They use a galvanized wheel to prevent corrosion. Do Trailer Tires and Rims Like Kenda # AM3S331 Come Already Balanced
We do recommend that you have the tires/rims balanced at a local shop prior to use. The tire and rim combos we carry arrive balanced in a certain way but not like a tire shop would balance a tire. Each tire and each wheel has a heavy spot and a light spot. What the manufacturers do is to offset the heavy spot on one with the light spot on the other to achieve some balance.

The B78-13 tires you mention convert to metric size 175/80-13. The 175/80-13 tires are available in three load ratings. B: 1100 lb at 35 psi C: 1360 lb at 50 psi D: 1610 lb at 65 psi You would choose the load rating based on the capacity of your axle. Two A rated tires would have a 2200 lb rating. Will 175/80-14 Tires Replace 175/80-13 Trailer Tires
The only difference between a 175/80-13 and a 175/80-14 is the height. The 14 inch model will be 1 inch taller. You need to make sure there is 1/2 inch of space available above the existing tires size to accommodate the larger size. I have included a couple of links on trailer tires for you. Also, a 14 inch tire will not fit a 13 inch wheel so you would need to replace the wheels as well. A 175/80-14 is not a common trailer tire size. If you meant a different size, let me know.

Can a Light Truck Be Used in Place of an 8-14.5 Trailer Tire
An 8-14.5 tire is normally seen on a motor home axle, which is designed for one time use only. We do have one tire that will fit, # AM10321. Some trailers can use a light truck tire but you do not want to use a passenger vehicle tire. The problem is that passenger vehicle tires are not rated and constructed to handle vertical load like a trailer tire is. Trailer tires have a thicker side wall. Diagnosing Cause of Uneven Tire Wear
Typically, when a tire displays excessive wear on the inside of the tread (closest to the trailer), it means that the trailer is consistently being overloaded. Radial or Bias Ply Wheel and Tire Combo for Boat Trailer
The only instance where we might conceivably recommend a bias ply tire over a radial tire would be for farm or agricultural use where the tire would primarily be used on non-paved surfaces.
