Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"

Today, we're going to review part number: AM3H325This is a Kenda 215/60/8 Bias Trailer mounted on an 8" Dexstar Galvanized Wheel. This wheel has a galvanized finish for superior corrosion-resistance. A few measurements on the wheel we'll be doing is the 8" diameter, which will be measured from inside to inside (give you 8"). The width on this wheel is 7" wide. This wheel has a bolt pattern of 5 lugs on a 4-1/2" bolt pattern. And when you're measuring a bolt pattern with an odd number of lugs, there's a couple possibilities you can use.

We're going to show you two. The first one would be is if you drew a circle through all 5 of the lug holes, and measure the diameter of that circle, that will give you the bolt pattern. So in this case, if we measure from the center of this bolt hole across to the edge of that circle we drew, it would be 4-1/2". The other option is you could measure from one bolt hole center to the center of the bolt hole next to it. That would be 2-5/8".

Then, if you go to the product page for that part number, it will list that a 2-5/8" measurement would be a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. This wheel does have a capacity of 1,165 lbs. It does use a wheel bolt size of 1/2" X 20".Another critical measurement is the pilot hole diameter, which is the large center hole in the wheel. This is what will go over the hub on your trailer. If we measure the diameter on that, it would be 2.8".

Now, we'll move to the tire: The tire is a Loadstar brand, size 215/60/8. This is a load range D tire, which is an 8-ply rated tire. It does have a maximum load capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. This tire is of bias construction, which will mean the belts in this tire will run the length of the tire. One last measurement we're going to do is the overall diameter, which on this one will measure 18".
