Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Today we're going to review part number AM31994. And this is a Kenda Karrier Tire, size ST175/80R13. It's a radial trailer tire mounted on a 13-inch Dexstar Galvanized Steel Wheel. This wheel has a corrosion resistant galvanized finish on the front and on the back. Now we'll do a few measurements on the wheel, the diameter of the rim is 13 inches, measured inside to inside. It is a 4-1/2-inch wide wheel.

The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. And there's two ways you can measure on a bolt pattern with an odd number of lugs, like in this case, 5 lugs. The first way, would be if you draw a circle through the center of all 5 holes and then measure the diameter of that circle. So in this case if we measure from the center of this bolt hole to that outer edge of that circle it would be 4-1/2 inches. That would be 5 on 4-1/2 inches.

The second way is if you measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of a bolt hole right next to it, so in this case if we measure center to center, it would be 2-5/8 inches, and if you go to the bottom of the product page, there'll be a chart that will list with those measurements what the bolt pattern would be. In this case, when you look 2-5/8-inches would associate to a 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. This wheel has a capacity of 1660 pounds at 65 psi. It does use a wheel bolt size of 1/2-inch by 20. Another critical measurement is the large center hole in the center of the wheel.

This is called the pilot hole diameter and this is what will go over the hub on your trailer. So if we measure the diameter of that pilot hole it would be 3.19 inches. And now if we go to the tire, the tire is a Loadstar Karrier, size ST, for Special Trailer, 175/80R13. We'll measure the overall diameter of this tire and that would be 24 inches. This tire has a capacity of load range D which is an eight-ply rated tire.

The tire does have a maximum load capacity of 1610 pounds at 65 psi. And this tire is a radial tire which means when it is constructed the belts will run the radius which is bead to bead across the radius of the tire. And what that will do for you when compared to a bias tire, a radial tire because of its design will give it more flex that allow for better ground contact, giving better traction, better stability. The other nice thing with the radial tires, normally because of the way they're constructed, they'll run cooler, so if you don't overload them it will help the tire last longer. This tire and wheel combo does have a limited two-year warranty, and that should do it for part number AM31994.

I shopped around for tires for a bass boat trailer. I found tires at a local membership warehouse that were close to e-trailer's price but after mounting and taxes they were much higher. e-trailer.com had the tire and galvanized wheel at a much lower price. I live in California and didn't expect to receive the tires for 7 to 10 days if I was lucky. The tires were delivered in 4 days. WOW! I decided to use radial tires after my bias tires were cupped after a 3500 mile trip. I was told that radial tires track better. You can not go wrong with ordering from e-trailer.com , I plan to order from them again. Good Job!9972
