Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Perfect fit and performance, drove almost 4ooo miles from Florida to Oregon with a heavy trailer load during a hot summer and no problems. Otherwise more local trips.

by:

Decent tires and wheels for a reasonable price

by:

Tires were shipped in nice sturdy boxes and fit perfectly on new hubs I installed on a recent trailer purchase. Previous owner had the wrong size wheel and tires with an even smaller spare. Now I have all matching.

by:

Great tires, no issues!!!

by:

The product arrived very quick. It looks like a very good product.

by:

This is the only place to go on the internet for anything trailer related. Best parts and accessories and free shipping. Can't beat that...

by:

Great tire and rim package. Also great customer service. The tires were out of stock temporarily and they followed up to make sure that the tires would arrive in time for my snowmobile trip.

by:

Great mounted tire and bracket, top quality. My phone help was excellent except he really didn't understand the part I was asking about, a hub washer that goes on before the nut, and he sent two bearing races. No biggie, they were only a couple bucks. He did spend a lot of time trying to find that part and adding it to my order, and had a excellent attitude, so great customer service too. This tire was bought as a spare, but the quality is so much better than the originals, I will buy another and put them on the trailer, save the IE tire as a spare.

by:

Exactly what I ordered. It was backordered, but came in earlier than expected. Great customer service and they kept me informed. Thank you. Look forward to hitting the road with my new wheels and tires.

Working great after 1 year, after taking the camper out of state and into the mountains with no issues, very pleased.

by:

Great product fit as expected. Only issue was ordered from instock tag on website and two days later get the dreaded backordered from manufacturer. Since I did not need immediately that was fine as it only took a little over three weeks to be delivered. Shipped and packed great would definitely buy again. Received several emails keeping me informed. Have bought several other items from etrailer and always pleased with the service shipping and packing!

One year later out on about 6000 miles they are doing great! Stays parked in box nc salt air and no that unlike the old boss tires. Very happy with etrailer.

by:

After 10 or so short trips the tires are holding up excellent. However I can not comment on long term or highway speed performance. The tires are not as stiff or thick as the old bias ply tires they replaced, but they seem to be more stable laterally and still absorb more bumps so a definite improvement over my old bias ply tires. On a dual axle 24' pontoon boat trailer.

Bias Ply tires do indeed have a stiffer sidewall, but radial tires do a better job of shedding heat. This makes radials ideal for the higher speeds encountered on the highway. Excessive heat is one of the main contributors to premature tire failure, which is why we will just about always recommend choosing radial tires if the choice is available in the size you need.

by:

Haven't put the tires on yet but they look great. Nice finish on the wheels. As always, top quality products and excellent service from etrailer.

Awesome! Ive put on about 100 miles since getting these. These radials get less heated from high speeds and give a much smoother ride in the tow vehicle. Switch to radial trailer tires if youre on the highway a lot and buy them here!

by:

Exactly what I needed to upgrade my 'may pop' tires and rusted wheels on my utility trailer. Was wanting a load range C trailer tire, and none of the local box stores could touch this. Great trailer tire and wheel combo, good price and delivered to my door.

by:

The tire/wheel combo looks good and was packaged perfectly. But, the reason I purchased this from etrailer.com was for two reasons, price and customer service. The price was half of what local retail shops were selling for. Customer service is top notch at etrailer. I had placed my order in hopes to receive the items that week. Unfortunately, it was apparent early on that it would not make it before my hope to arrive date. I was contacted by George J. immediately and was given an explanation for the delay and that efforts were being made to fulfill my order. I was then contacted by Ahren J. who offered other options and similar products that would ship out immediately. I stayed with my original item and it arrived as predicted. I've read tons of reviews on etrailer's customer service and how good it was and George and Ahren lived up to the reviews. Thank you! I will definitely use etrailer.com for furture purchases.

by:

I put these tires on my pop camper last year and they have far exceeded my expectations. great price, shipped quickly, and have made hauling my camper a much smoother ride.
very easy to use website, just select your year make and model and the sight takes the guessing work out of it and you get exactly what you need.
I will definitely by my next set of tires from here again.

by:

Awesome

by:

Mounted up easy & gets the spare just out of the way of the folding down salt shield on my Aluma 8616 snowmobile trailer. Had to move everything ahead so that the mount was making contact with the coupler but it works.

by:

tires came ready to use. pressure was spot on, and used them to day trailer tracked great and smooth, great tire at interstate speed. but I don't believe they helped me catch my limit of fish today but you can never know for sure. Great customer service and will recommend etrailer.

by:

Was very happy with tires and wheels. I ordered on Friday and they were delivered on Tuesday, great company to work with. These tires are going on my boat trailer.

by:

Parts always come quickly and at a reasonable price. Haven’t needed the spare tire for my car dolly yet (thankfully), but it’s there when I do.
Thanks for the good service!

by:

I am putting them on an enclosed Chariot Motorcycle trailer, They look good though there is a slight defect in the paint on the backside of one wheel. Time will tell how they perform and hold up.

by:

Great product, great service.
Thank
you!

by:

Fast delivery and the product look great

by:

I may not use these right away. My annual camping trips usually run 1000+ miles. I have had near failures in the past but lucked out 3 different times I 40 I80 I25 by inspecting at every stop and finding cracked side wall. Thanks to smart phones I found replacements before blowouts.

current tires are 4 years old low mileage garage parked so I plant to use one more trip before putting them ( unless I have to) 3 spares with 2 new I ll be ready. 1999 coleman 20 ft popup probably should have had higher load rating

by:

Nice looking tires work great on my small boat trailer. shipping was fast

  • Economical Spare Tire and Wheel With 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern and 175/80R13 Tires
I would be happy to help you out but I need some more information about the bolt pattern and size of your wheel. I've added a link for you on how to measure for bolt pattern, and the size will be the diameter of the wheel. I assume the wheel is 13 inches but just wanted to check and make sure. I would still need to confirm the bolt pattern as well. If you can get back to me with that information I'll be happy to let you know your best option.

  • Are The Trailer Tire And Wheel Combination Balanced
The trailer tire and wheel combination is received from the supplier already with the tire mounted on the wheel. The supplier does not balance the combination, but when the tire is installed to the wheel they will line the high (heavy) spot on the tire with the low (light) spot on the wheel. This does not completely balance the tire and wheel combination but it does eliminate any excessive out of balance condition. I would recommend to balance the tire and wheel combination at a local...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace a ST165/80D13
You should have no problem going with a ST175/80D-13 over a ST165/80D13. The tire will only be about 10 mm's wider and 16 mm's taller. You might double check your clearances if they are close, but most likely you would have the necessary clearance for the additional width and height. If so, the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 13" White Modular Wheel # AM31957 should work well for you as long as your bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. Neither tire size you mention is a trailer tire size. Could you have meant 175/80-13 which is a trailer tire size? Your current 165/80-13 tires are about 23.39 inches in diameter and 6.50 inches in width. Switching to the 175/70-13 would give you a shorter, wider tire at 22.64 inches in diameter and 6.88 inches in width. When changing tire sizes, you'll want to be mindful of the clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender or the underside of the trailer. You'll want to see...

  • What is the Speed Rating for Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 13" White Modular Wheel
All of the trailer tires that we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour. This is regardless of construction (radial or bias). But I do recommend radial tires because they run cooler and track better than bias ply tires. Bias ply tires are better for off road applications where you would be doing most of the travel off the beaten path. I have included a link to our help article on trailer tires for you.

Your calculation is correct. If you have four tires on your 4500 lb trailer, each tire would have to be rated for at least 1125 lbs. If we use the weight of the trailer as our first determining factor, we can narrow it down to a 175/80-13 (1,360 lbs max load at 50 psi) or 185/80-13 (1,610-lb maximum load at 65 psi) radial tire/wheel. It is true that 8 inch tires will have more revolutions than larger tires which will wear down the tires and bearings slightly faster. The biggest thing to consider in moving up tire sizes is the changes it makes to the trailer.
