Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"

Today we will be reviewing part number AM30670. This is the Kenda 4.80-12 bias trailer tire mounted on a 12" Dexstar galvanized wheel. We'll start with the rim dimensions on this wheel. To measure the rim diameter, measure inside-to-inside which should be 12". The width of this wheel is 4". This wheel has a bolt pattern, which is 5 lugs, 4-1/2" between the lugs.

The best way on a bolt pattern that is of odd number of lugs, is if you will draw a circle through the center of each bolt hole and then we will measure the diameter of that circle, that will give you the bolt pattern. So if we measure from the center of this bolt hole all the way across to the other edge of that circle, be 4-1/2". So this wheel would be a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. This wheel has a weight capacity of 1,250 pounds at 90 psi. It uses a wheel bolt size of a 1/2"-20.

Another critical measurement is the pilot hole diameter, which is the large center hole in this wheel. This will go over the hub on your trailer. If we measure across, the diameter of that would be 3.19". This wheel does have a corrosion-resistant galvanized finish. Now we move on to the tire.

The tire on this is a Loadstar, size 4.80-12. This tire is a load range C tire, which is a 6 ply rated tire, has a maximum load carrying capacity of 990 pounds at 90 psi. This tire is a bias constructed tire, which means the belts on this tire will run this way the length of the tire that will give a little bit firmer ride when compared to a radial design tire. One last measurement we're going to do is the overall diameter. And if we measure all the way across, will give us 21".
