Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for HWT Tires and Wheels AM22692 Review

Today, we're going to review part number AM22692. This is the HWT Aluminum Hi-Spec 16" x 6" Series 04 Star Trailer Wheel, with the 8 on 6-1/2" hole pattern and a negative 8-1/2 millimeter offset. This wheel is a heavy-duty aluminum wheel, which is very durable, lightweight and rust proof. It is the Hi-Spec Series 04 star spoke pattern, which is very attractive. What's nice about it, if you notice the front of the spoke and the edge of the lip, is all a machine-polished finish, to give it a shine. The front and the back of the wheel are all clear-coated to protect it. This wheel does use the ICF technology, which is Improved Clamp Force. This helps keep your wheel securely in place, so basically there's no need to re-torque it after your initial installation.

This is a heavy-duty wheel, so it does include with the high-pressure metal valve stem . it has all included. This is a high-quality wheel that meets the Department of Transportation specifications. A few specs on this . The dimension again, is 16" in diameter by 6" wide. When you measure the diameter on a wheel, you're going to be measuring actually where the tire beads would seat, when a tire's mounted on a wheel.

The tire beads seat right in here. So when you measure the width, you're going to measure inside to inside, and the same way on the diameter, you'll measure inside to inside. To give you an idea, we have a tape measure here. If we go inside to inside, you can see right at 16" for the diameter. And again on the width, inside to inside, it's going to be right at 6".

So 16 x 6. The bolt pattern on this wheel is an 8 lug on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. If you need to measure a bolt pattern on a wheel that has an even number of lugs, like in this case, 8, you just pick one of the lugs and measure from the center of that lug, directly across to the lug across from it, center to center. With this one, if we do center to center, you're right at 6-1/2", so 8 lugs, 6-1/2" bolt pattern. It does use a wheel lug size of 1/2" x 20, or 9/16" x 18. Pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel, goes over the hub on your trailer, we'll measure the diameter of that. On this one, the heavy-duty wheel is going to be right at 4.9".

Weight capacity on this wheel is 3,960 pounds. The other thing this has is an offset. Most trailer wheels will use a zero offset, which means your mounting surface would be right at the center line of the wheel. In this case, it has an offset of negative 8 millimeters. Negative will move the . When it has a negative offset, it's going to move that mounting surface from the center line, back to the back of the wheel. When you do that, it's going to move the tire and wheel out from the trailer. This has a negative 8 millimeter, so this mounting surface right back here, is going to be moved 8 millimeters to the back of the wheel, which will pull your wheel and tire away from the trailer. That should do it for the review on part number AM22692. This is the HWT Aluminum Hi-Spec 16" x 6" Series 04 Star Trailer Wheel, with the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern and the negative 8 millimeter offset.

Ask the Experts about this HWT Tires and Wheels
Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • How to Determine Offset on a Trailer Wheel
  • The width of a rim is measured from bead seat to bead seat. The overall width will be a little greater, by about an inch, than the listed width. So if the overall width is 7 inches and the wheel has a zero offset then from where the wheel mounts to the hub it will be 3-1/2 inches to the back edge or to the front edge. Wheel # AM22692 that you referenced has a negative 8mm offset. This means the mounting surface is 8mm closer to the trailer. This will make the wheel further from the trailer...

  • Calculating Available Back Spacing of Trailer Wheels with Negative and Positive Offsets
  • The Americana Star Mag Trailer Wheel, # AM22691, has a positive offset of 5 mm. This means the mounting surface of the wheel is set 5 mm to the outside of the wheel from the zero offset mark or moves the tire closer to the center of the trailer. This wheel has 3-1/2 inches of back spacing at the zero offset mark which translates to 88.9 mm. Because it has a 5 mm positive offset you will add 5 to 88.9 which is 93.5 or 3.68 inches. The Americana Star Mag Trailer Wheel, # AM22692, has...

  • Availability of 16 x 6 Trailer Wheel with 8-on-6-1/2 Bolt Pattern and Negative Offset
  • You are correct that a wheel with negative offset will move the tire further away from the trailer wheel well. We do offer one trailer wheel in your required bolt pattern and size with negative offset, HWT Star Mag Trailer Wheel # AM22692 that has 8mm of negative offset and a 110-psi rating. We also offer a wheel/tire combination # AM34964 which has a ST235/80R16 tire in Load range E, with the same 8mm of negative offset.

  • What is the PSI Rating for Aluminum Hi-Spec Series 06 Trailer Wheel # TTWAL06865HDS
  • The Aluminum Hi-Spec Series 06 Trailer Wheel, # TTWAL06865HDS, that you mentioned, is a heavy duty wheel which will handle up to 200 psi so you would have no problem mounting a load range G tire. At this time the only load range G tire that we offer is the Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire, # TTWPRG235R16, which fits a 16 inch x 6 inch rim. In this case you could go with the Aluminum Hi-Spec Series 7 Trailer Wheel, # TTWAL07685HDB, or the Aluminum HWT Star Mag Trailer Wheel with...

  • What Is The Weight Rating Of The Americana Aluminum Star Mag Trailer Wheel # AM22692
  • I contacted our representative at Americana and she informed me that the load rating for the Americana Aluminum Star Mag Trailer Wheel, part # AM22692, is 3,960 lbs. She did not have information on the maximum tire pressure and informed me that it would depend on which tire you use. If the center of the hub were directly in the center of the wheel it would would have a 0 offset. This wheel has a negative 8 mm offset so the center line of the wheel would move closer to the trailer, and...
