Form meets function in Thule's K-Summit tire chains. Unlike typical snow chains, the K-Summit chains require no attachments behind the wheel. Simply place two of the traction plates on top of the tire and fasten the K-Summit to the wheel's lug nut or bolt with the easy-to-use fixing key. Activate the chain's ratcheting mechanism and you'll be ready to roll. As you drive away, the traction plates clamp onto the tire surface, and the chain adjusts to conform to the tire perfectly, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. After use, fold up the tire chains and store them in the compact, reusable carrying case.

The K-Summit delivers an extremely user-friendly design. Each chain sits on top of your tire's treads instead of wrapping around the entire wheel. This design not only eliminates the threat of scratches to your wheels, but it also ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well.

Thule snow chains are handmade in Italy of hardened manganese-nickel alloy steel for durability. The reduced-clearance, D-shape links provide superior traction for excellent grip on snow and ice. The durable plastic traction plates have metal studs to give you superior grip while also providing a high level of driving comfort.

K-Summit Installation

How to Install the K-Summit Snow Chain:

  1. Lay 2 of the chains traction plates on top of the tire.
  2. Attach chain to 1 wheel nut.
  3. Activate the ratchet, which tightens as you drive away.

K-Summit Lug Nut Adapter

Lug Nut Adapter

Attach the lug nut adapter that matches your wheel bolt size to the fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included with your K-Summit snow chains. (etrailer.com's custom fitguide will indicate whether your vehicle requires an adapter that is sold separately.) The fixing key then mounts to the wheel bolt on the end where the adapter has been affixed. The other end attaches to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel expressed in inches

Video Transcript for Thule Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Review - 2014 Jeep Patriot

Today on our 2014 Jeep Patriot with tire size 205, 70, 16, we're going to be test fitting the Thule Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains for passenger vehicles, part number TH02230K45. Now, to begin our test fit, we'll refer to the instruction manual. In here we're going to find, per our tire size, how many of these links need to be removed. As you can see in this gap here, for the 205, 70, 16 tire that's on the vehicle, we just had to remove one. You want to grab your tire chain, stretch the top of it out. Make sure you don't have any kinks or any tangles. We're simply going to place it over the top of our tire here, and we're going to push in far enough here to where our tire meets the curve right here in this plastic piece. Now we take the appropriate adapter here, which is going to slide onto our lug nut; it comes with a 17 or a 19 millimeter.

We'll take an an anodized aluminum spacer that we have here, and in our application we're using the shorter of the 2 bolts provided, also the shorter of the spacers. Slide your spacer onto your bolt, and then we'll thread it in to our adapter. Now be sure your adapter is pressed in all the way, that way it gets a good, firm grip. One of the keys when we're tightening this down, is to be sure that the arrow here is pointed away from our lug nut. We want that to be in the center; we don't want this to be pointed out towards the outside of the tire. We'll bring it in to here. Now that we've got our bolt down there hand tight, we're going to take the wrench that was provided to us by Thule in our K-Summit kit, and we're going to go ahead and tighten that down.

As far as the specification on that, there isn't one. They say tighten it as tight as you can get it. With that installed tightly, with that pointed towards the middle of the tire, we'll now come to our ratchet strap, which is the tensioning device for it. We'll ratchet this down. As we'll see, it's going to start sucking our chain in. Now these spring arms help to push our spacers in as we go.

Now to get this on there, we will drive forward. Be sure that's pressed down firmly around there. Now we'll drive forward to get it to suck on the rest of the way. As you're driving, it provides a constant force inward that's going to keep your chain tensioned for you. To get to here, we'll want to bring that edge up and around over the top, and now as we drive on the street, usually it takes 50 yards or so, all of these are going to be sucked in. I'll just do it manually here so you can see what it will look like fully installed. With these spring arms, push those in, and as you can see, makes contact here at all 4 points all the way around.

With our chains secure and snug to our tire, that does complete today's test fit of the Thule Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains, part number TH02230K45, on our 2014 Jeep Patriot, using tire size 205, 70, 16. .

2015 BMW 3 Series

Review from a similar Thule K-Summit in Tire Chains

Bought chains for a 2015 3 Series BMW with M Sport Package. You just can't buy chains for these at your local auto parts store. Got exactly what I want, the Thule chains that have nothing on the back side of the tire, the Thule K-Summit series and the price was substantially less than buying directly from Thule. Service was quick, got updated status from eTrailer periodically, and overall an excellent experience. Having a video from eTrailer showing how to install was a great idea. 223741

Review from a similar Thule K-Summit in Tire Chains

After having a hard time figuring out how to assembly it due to lack of written instructions along with the illustration, I was able to mount them with technical help from the manufacurer engineering dept. I am very unsure if I made a good choice in purchasing this product. I was led by the marketing of easiness of installation. Now I realize that if one link on the chain breaks, the whole chain safety is compromise whereas in a standard cheaper model (+- $40) you can just remove one link across the tire and replace it easily. According to Tech. dept. from Thule if on single linkin this chain breaks you can use an emmergency link tighted with plier, but the chain needs to be mailed back to Thurle for repair or replacement. This is a hassle for such a high priced, premium, "ahead of time design". Sure the idea is good, but needs improvement. The same design that makes it easy of use, renders it useless in case of a broken link. I have not driven with them on snow, but I already see its flaw and I am unsure if I made a wise investment. It came with one year warranty, but you get the hassle of having to return them for replacement while you go to Pep Boys and buy a cheaper reliable cable chain while the white elephant is in the shop. What if it breaks after the one year warranty? Waht happened to your U$ 405 plus shipping investment that should bring you peace of mind? These are a few thought I want to share with you. Have a great day. 8216
