Form meets function in Thule's K-Summit tire chains. Unlike typical snow chains, the K-Summit chains require no attachments behind the wheel. Simply place two of the traction plates on top of the tire and fasten the K-Summit to the wheel's lug nut or bolt with the easy-to-use fixing key. Activate the chain's ratcheting mechanism and you'll be ready to roll. As you drive away, the traction plates clamp onto the tire surface, and the chain adjusts to conform to the tire perfectly, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. After use, fold up the tire chains and store them in the compact, reusable carrying case.

The K-Summit delivers an extremely user-friendly design. Each chain sits on top of your tire's treads instead of wrapping around the entire wheel. This design not only eliminates the threat of scratches to your wheels, but it also ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well.

Thule snow chains are handmade in Italy of hardened manganese-nickel alloy steel for durability. The reduced-clearance, D-shape links provide superior traction for excellent grip on snow and ice. The durable plastic traction plates have metal studs to give you superior grip while also providing a high level of driving comfort.

K-Summit Installation

How to Install the K-Summit Snow Chain:

  1. Lay 2 of the chains traction plates on top of the tire.
  2. Attach chain to 1 wheel nut.
  3. Activate the ratchet, which tightens as you drive away.

K-Summit Lug Nut Adapter

Lug Nut Adapter

Attach the lug nut adapter that matches your wheel bolt size to the fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included with your K-Summit snow chains. ('s custom fitguide will indicate whether your vehicle requires an adapter that is sold separately.) The fixing key then mounts to the wheel bolt on the end where the adapter has been affixed. The other end attaches to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel expressed in inches

Video Transcript for Thule Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Thule Premium self tensioning snow tire chains for passenger vehicles. This is the K summit series and size K45, part number TH02230K45. Because these chains are designed to ride solely on your vehicles tire tread, they're the perfect solution for cars with limited wheel well clearance. Chains automatically tighten and align as you drive for a simple installation process. With the patented self centering, self tensioning system, these are a very fast and a very easy chain to install. The exclusive steel tensioning springs that you see here, make for a perfect fit on any tire, even worn tires.

The external quick release system here allows for fast and easy removal. Lift that there and you'll pull out on the center, releasing it from your tire. For exceptional grip in snow and ice, the dual sided D shaped links, increase traction. The patented non-tread sections are painted and this will prevent them from freezing to your fingers when it gets really cold outside. These chains are compatible with both ABS and electronic stability control systems. You have a nice storage bag here, nylon material, also has reflective material here so if you're out on the road doing it, you can kind of turn that towards oncoming traffic.

In the bag, you're going to have the mounting instructions, you'll have the set of small tools here. We'll use those when we remove our spring tensioners. We'll also have a larger wrench here. It is rubber coated to keep your hands or fingers from freezing to it and that's going to be used for tightening our lug adapters. Now these are designed to fit 17 and 19 millimeter lug applications. We do have a 21 millimeter lug nut adapter, part number TH0223021MM or a 22 millimeter lug nut adapter, part number TH0223022MM.

Both are sold separately. Our K Summit series tire chains from Thule, offer a five year manufacturer's warranty. Now we're going to go ahead and show you how to install them. The first thing we're going to do is refer to our manual here. We're going to look for the K45 series chains which we'll have here.

Depending on your tire size, this is going to tell you how many of the spring tensioners you need to remove. If you're in this category, you'll use the chains just as they are. Our tire size is here, the 2057016 and as we can see here, we need to remove one of the spring tensioners. To do that, we'll grab our two provided tools, we'll have our Allen key here. This is going to be our 7 millimeter wrench. Now the spring tensioners are very easy to remove. Simply want to find one that's got the yellow bands on it, this side we'll put in the Allen tool and on this side, our little 7 mill wrench. They use a very small nylon bushing nut there to go on. The spring will come off, that will release this side of the chain. The nylon bushing will come out. We'll inaudible 00:03:28 screw off that side. Of course, if you're going to be using it for different sizes, you'll want to keep this. Just put the pieces back together. With our spring tensioner removed, we're ready to mount it onto our tire now. We'll want to lift up, make sure we get out any kinks or any tangles on here. We'll grab the top two sections. You can pick whichever one you want to use. Grab two sections of it. We're going to place those onto our tire. You can see here where the contour is. That's where we'll want the edge of our tires. This is going to sit right here on the edge. Open them nice and wide, pull one outward, and slide them up on our tire, just like you see there. Bring that edge down and around, now we'll bring these edges down and around making sure all our kinks are out. Now we're ready to connect our lug nut adapter. You're going to come up and around, might have to twist it a little bit. You just slide it on. You want to be sure it's all the way seated in against your rim and this you wanted pointed towards the other side of the tire from where your lug nut is at. You don't want it pointed out. You'll have it down and pointed this way. Then take our provided wrench, we will tighten down our bolt, being sure that that's nice and secure to our tire. At this point, simply going to be a matter of using the ratchet strap. That sucks our chains right into our tire. As you can see, we've still got a little room here that we need our chain to go over. With the self-centering system, you see the gaps that we have here will be taken away. All we have to do is drive forward a little bit. As you can see, made contact all the way around so what we're going to do now is head out and see how it looks in action. That will complete our look at the Thule Premium self tensioning snow tire chains for passenger vehicles with 15 to 19 inch tires, part number TH02230K45. .

Review from a similar Thule K-Summit in Tire Chains

After having a hard time figuring out how to assembly it due to lack of written instructions along with the illustration, I was able to mount them with technical help from the manufacurer engineering dept. I am very unsure if I made a good choice in purchasing this product. I was led by the marketing of easiness of installation. Now I realize that if one link on the chain breaks, the whole chain safety is compromise whereas in a standard cheaper model (+- $40) you can just remove one link across the tire and replace it easily. According to Tech. dept. from Thule if on single linkin this chain breaks you can use an emmergency link tighted with plier, but the chain needs to be mailed back to Thurle for repair or replacement. This is a hassle for such a high priced, premium, "ahead of time design". Sure the idea is good, but needs improvement. The same design that makes it easy of use, renders it useless in case of a broken link. I have not driven with them on snow, but I already see its flaw and I am unsure if I made a wise investment. It came with one year warranty, but you get the hassle of having to return them for replacement while you go to Pep Boys and buy a cheaper reliable cable chain while the white elephant is in the shop. What if it breaks after the one year warranty? Waht happened to your U$ 405 plus shipping investment that should bring you peace of mind? These are a few thought I want to share with you. Have a great day. 8216
