V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Use the cam tensioning devices that are built into the side chain to tighten. Do this by inserting the flat end of the included wrench into the slot on each cam and twisting it.

5. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains Review

Today we're going to be talking a look at the Titan Chains snow tire chains with cam tighteners and the v-bar links. These are sold in the pair and come in a wide variety of sizes for many different vehicle applications. On the v-bar-style of chain, Titan's really taken it a step further. They take their twisted-link chain and then they weld the v-bars on. These give us superior traction whether it's in the ice or the snow. As you can see, the v-bars are designed in a ladder pattern.

They run across our tire horizontally giving us excellent grip and stopping power as we drive forward. These are an SAE class U chain or a regular clearance chain. As you can see here, we've got clearance all the way around. Gives us plenty of room for our chain to operate. We have four of the cam tensioners that are located all the way around. These help to draw the chain together and really tighten it around your tire, leaving us with no need for the cable or the rubber-style adjusters.

These are meant for highway and off-road use all the way up to 30 miles per hour. These are constructed of a low-carbon steel, so we have reduced risk of corrosion. Now that we've gone over a lot of the features of the chains, let's head over there to the passenger side and let's get this one installed. We've laid it out, taken a look at each of the four tensioners to make sure those are open. We don't want any restriction as we're trying to get it put on. We have the hooks facing down or away from our tire.

As you can see, you don't want that sharp edge or that non-smooth edge to be rubbing up against your sidewall. It might cause some kind of damage. Now we need to do is just position these in front of our tire. Now with our tire chains laid out we're just going to roll on forward here. Now it's time to bring our chains up and over. We'll bring our two ends up here in the rear and connect them.

Now bring our other side over. On the rear side we use the second link to connect. Looks like on the front side here we'll be using the same one. We do have the option of going to the first, second, or third. We have a plus or minus one tolerance, so if you use the second you can go forward or back of that once. The same with any of the other links there to connect. We've got that in. We're going to cam that over, slide our collar back. As you can see, that is going to hold that closed. We'll now use the included tool, place it right in the tensioner, and just rock it over into position. Now we're ready to pull forward a couple of car lengths, get out, and give it one more check just to make sure we haven't developed any extra slack. But as you can see, it's really nice and tight, really secure to our tire, which is a 275/55R20. But of course it's designed to fit a wide variety of applications. That will complete today's look at the Titan Chains snow tire chains with cam tighteners and the v-bar links. .

  • 2007 Saturn Vue Snow Chain Availability
  • If your 2007 Saturn Vue's owners manual says to not use snow chains we can't safely recommend you do so.
