Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Glacier V-Trac Snow Tire Chains Review

Today we are going to install the Glacier V-Trac snow chains, part number PW2121V. We are going to lay out the tire chains. We will point out that we have this smooth side of the chain itself actually goes against the tire and this part faces the outside. Alright, we will go ahead and drape them over the tire. When you drape them over the tire, make sure that you have the cable with three stops pointing towards the outside. Try to get these junctions right here evenly tight. After your first time, you will probably have to look at the back side. Probably judge to make sure you have them even on both sides of the tire. We will grab the inside part of the chain and make the connection back there. 0:50

OK, now make sure that your chains are pulled over as far as you can. You may have to role the tire back and forth to make sure you catch everything. And then just pull it all together. And depending on the size of the tire, you can use any of these three. And if you have any leftover tail sticking out, you can use this plastic clip to hold everything together. Alright, take our tensioners and this is simply going to go in between the junction points. Alright, now the chain is properly tensioned and it is ready for service. Now you may want to go ahead and run it for a little bit and double check to make sure everything is ok. And there you have it for part number PW2121V.

      • Are Snow Tire Chains And Cables Compatible With Radial Tires
      • The Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW1942V, are compatible with radial tires. Snow chains or cables may cause cosmetic scuffing of tires when installed. This condition is unavoidable with certain tread types and designs. By design, most standard snow tire chains or cables must hang down (drape) the side wall of the tire in order to stay on the tire while being used. As a result, radial tires may also experience some minor scuffing of the tire side wall as a result of the flex inhe

      • Snow Chains Recommendations for Tire Size 245/50-18 on a 2011 BMW X3
      • The only snow chains we have available, at this time, for the 245/50-18 tire size are the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, item # PW1042, and the Glacier Square-Link Snow Tire Chains, item # PWPLC1144. I checked with our supplier and they stated that if you want the best traction the Square-Link Chain is the best option to go with and would even be better than the Glacier V-Trac Cable Chains, item # PW1942V, that you referenced.

      • Self-Tensioning Snow Chains for 2011 BMW X3
      • The only self tensioning tire chain we offer for the 245/55-17 tire size is the Thule K-Summit, part # TH02230K45. The chains are self tightening and aligning and will not extend past the inside edge of the tire, so they are perfect for vehicles with limited clearance between the inside of the tire and the suspension components. The chains offer a 5 year warranty, and are very easy to install and remove as you can see by watching the video I linked you to. If you like the cable style li
