Once the chain is looped around the tire and the three color-coded connections are made, the patented self-centering, automatic-tensioning system takes over, creating a perfect fit as you drive away. You only need to get out of the car once. To remove the chains, simply pull the external quick-release lever and unwrap the chains from around each tire.

Thule snow chains are handmade in Italy of hardened manganese nickel alloy steel for ultimate durability. The dual-sided, 10-mm-diameter, D-shaped links provide superior traction for excellent grip on snow and ice. For even more traction, specially designed steel bars are integrated into the chains help to break up any ice beneath your tires. And anti-scratch nylon bumpers protect your vehicle's wheel rims.

Included with each pair of chains are mounting instructions, a kneeling mat and a pair of gloves, all packaged in a sturdy, reusable container.

Quick and easy installation of Thule CS-10 Chains

How to Install the CS10 Snow Chain

  1. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.
  2. Connect the plastic-covered yellow and blue cable on the back side of the tire.
  3. Pull the chain over the top and around the tire; connect the red hook to the red loop.
  4. Make the last connection by first running the red loop through the buckle then to the red hook attached to the tensioning cable.
    • Simply drive forward to activate the patented self-centering and auto-tensioning system to ensure a perfect fit.
  5. Pull the red handle to remove.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel expressed in inches

Video Transcript for Thule CS10 Tire Chains Review

Today we are going to show you part number TH00204102 from Thule. This is one of their tire chains, and this is their CS10 model. As you can see here, it comes with a carrying case, and you can carry both chains. Off to the right-hand side is a pair of gloves to help keep your mitts dry while you install the snow chains. Also, there is a set of extra repair links that come with. And then also, off to the left of that is a handle, and that is part of the quick-release system, which is one of the benefits of this actual part number here. It makes it really easy to disconnect the chain and take it off of the vehicle. And finally there is a kneeling mat so when you kneel down of course you will not get your knees wet. It has a patented self-centering and self-tensioning system. The tensioning system actually centers the chain on the tire as you drive. The pattern on the chain is asymmetrical, diamond-pattern chain with icebreaker reinforcements. And this will not affect anything like anti-lock braking systems and electronic stability control systems. And next we will go ahead and install this chain and show you how it works and how it looks.

Run the blue part around the bottom side of the tire and pull it behind the back and hook them together at the top of the tire. And the blue cable will hide behind the tire and this will stay on top to give you some reference. And pull out the rest of your chain. And this red hook goes to these red chain loops here, just like that. And then your tensioning device goes through here through this buckle. And pull it tight, and then it hooks up to this strap right here. And with that, the chains are installed.

To release everything, undo the tensioner, undo your hook here. And this is your quick-release for the blue cable in the back. You hook it up, give it a good pull, and it comes right apart. And then part of this chain is caught underneath the tire. You have just got to roll it one way or the other to get your chain loose. And there you have it for part number TH00204102 from Thule. This is one of their tire chains, their CS10 model.

Put the chains on my 2011 Mazda 3 in about 3-4 minutes, and taking them off only took about 30 seconds! Great set of chains right here to keep me covered on my road trip to Canada! 177726

With record snowfalls in New England right now, this was the best purchase I could have made. I've only had the chains for 3 days and I have had to use them 3 times. These have been an absolute savior. They can be a little challenging to get them on and off, especially when alone. Otherwise, they have been great. 173057

Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

Thule CS10 Tire Chains Meet the Challenge The "Self-tensioning Snow Tire Chains for Passenger Vehicles by Thule - CS10" (diamond pattern chains that feature ice breaker reinforcements) have turned our fair-weather car into an arctic animal. We give these chains the highest recommendation due to their beautifully snug fit; extreme ease of installation and removal; and, most notably, for their performance, providing excellent traction in the most challenging of road conditions. We live in a mountainous area northwest of Asheville, North Carolina. The final half mile to our home includes a drive through a creek and a single lane dirt/gravel road riddled with underground springs that constantly seep water, resulting in hazardous areas of ice when the temperatures are low. Our road, which includes a stretch of steep hill, is never plowed or treated; and when snow falls or ice builds up, it sticks around until it naturally melts. During winter months we have often been compelled to park our car a half mile from our house because of the impassability of that treacherous bit of road. We decided to go with one set of chains for the front tires only, since that's what our 2007 Toyota Yaris owner's manual instructs for our front-wheel drive vehicle. Definitely check your owner's manual for the requirements for your particular vehicle. Also, check for any restrictions your state may have regarding tire chains. The chains are really quite easy to put on; it's just a matter of figuring out how to arrange them into the correct configuration before putting them on for the first time. After that, you know what you're doing and it's a cinch. Our car manufacturer recommends removing the wheel covers, to prevent any damage to them. Taking the chains off is a snap, with the simple tug of the cable and a quick pull-forward of the vehicle. We are careful to make sure the plastic clips are out of the way of the tires when pulling the vehicle forward, to avoid crushing any plastic. These certainly aren't your daddy's old clanky ladder-style chains. No one buys chains for looks; but we have to say, these chains actually look good. The Thule brand is all over Asheville, with many vehicles toting the brand's cargo carriers or bike racks. So, the Thule CS10 tire chains fit right in with the outdoor sports vibe going on here. The one very minor area of complaint is that, while appreciably sturdy, the carrying case is rather difficult to open -- especially if you're out in the cold with gloves on. But we didn't buy our set for the case. It's the chains that matter and they pass the test with flying colors. Our Toyota, outfitted in Thule CS10s, now travels up and down treacherous roads safely and with ease. Simply put, these tire chains have changed our entire outlook on winter life here. No more dreading a forecast of snow and ice . . . bring it on! 4743

Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

I have test installed these chains on my 2014 Kia Optima. Tight fit but as the chain requirements state in my owners manual and on the case of these chains, they are "SAE Class S" which meets the requirements; so I don't expect any issues. The CS-10 chains go on quick, snug up as you drive, and release quick which I like because where I'm at one of my bigger concerns is icy roads. I drive about 5 miles of road during the winter on my way to work that is in a valley and the sun doesn't hit much of it if at all during that time, so you're nearly guaranteed to need some chains there, but after that often the ice and snow is clear so the ability to pull off to the side of the road and QUICKLY remove the chains since I'm already on my way to work is appealing. I have high hopes for these chains when needed. I will try to come back to this review and update after use. etrailer got the order processed, shipped and to my door in days with the free shipping option; I am very impressed with the shipping, packaging and order handling! Thank you etrailer. I feel as ready for winter as I can! 153583

Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

Thule Tires Chains I had never owned a set of snow chains before. Found these and asked a etrailer associate if they would work on my 2010 VW Jetta TDI. After being assured they would fit I took a chance and purchased a set. The service I received from etrailer was great. They arrived much sooner than promised which proved to be very timely. The following week we received our first snow fall of the winter and they were needed. They worked beyond expectations. They were very easy to put on and considering I have not installed a snow chain in 20 years that's saying something. They worked better than advertised and if it were not for them I could not have gotten home that night. They even got a thumbs up approval from the Chevrolet Equinox driver that was crossways in the road trying to get up the same hill that my Jetta climbed with no problem. If you need the peace of mind that having a set of quality snow chains in your trunk would give you, I have a piece of advice for you. Buy them and buy them from etrailer. 4349

Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

After having difficulty finding chains locally that properly fit my low profile tires (P225/45R18) I turned to for information and selection of tire chains. Based on info found there I ordered the Thule CS-10 Size 100 chains. I had the chains in two days. I had some difficulty test fitting the chains using the included instructions from Thule. However, the excellent videos on the web site were very helpful in showing me how to install and remove the chains. The chains fit perfectly and appear to be of high quality. I truly appreciate the information available at in helping me both select and install the chains properly. This is my second purchase from and I have been extremely pleased both times. 170452

Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

Product installation is a breeze. After reading the poorly written instructions it only took about 5 minutes to do a test fit. Very easy to figure out. I live in Montana and use traditional chains on my trucks. I showed my wife how to install them and she was able to do it in the same amount of time. I would test fit these prior to using in cold snowy weather. As far as quality not sure how they will hold up. Thule used a bunch of plastic parts and a bungy cord for the tensioner. I would not want to drive very far on them. Good for emergency use. That's what I bought them for. 59882

Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

I have yet to use the product (Thule Snow Chains)--I hope never to have to use them, in fact. But I can tell you that this group gives terrific service--especially Kelly. They had to order the chains from Italy and still got them to me in record time, ahead of when they promised them. I had problems untangling the 1st set of chains (they appeared to be misconnected); but Kelly replaced the set with a new one at no cost whatsoever. This is really great service, and I thank them for it. 164150

fast turn around I ordered these chains to see how well it could make my little car travel through snow and icy conditions, I have not used them yet,but the folks at e-trailer sent them out to me real quick and followed up to make sure I received them. Review from a similar Thule CS10 in Tire Chains

I have not used the chains in snow yet, but I put them onto my car. It is easy, and the dismount is easier. You should get thoroughly acquainted with them prior to need, but the learning curve should be fairly quick. I feel confident that their use will be effective because of the agressive design. I have seen other sets of chains that are more impressive, but at 2 to 3 times the cost of these. 59479

Great chains. Very easy to put on and they work great. I have a very steep driveway in Wisconsin with a 2 wheel drive vehicle. Not a good combination in the winter time. These chains are not going to offer the best traction or last the longest but will do in a pinch. For more longevity and traction the Thule CB12 chains # TH01221090 are a good choice especially...

  • Thule Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2007 Subaru Impreza
  • For an S-rated tire chain for the tire size you listed of 205/55R16 on your 2007 Subaru Outback I would recommend the Thule Tire Chains # TH00204090. These chains are S-rated which means they are great for vehicles with limited wheel-well clearance and they automatically tighten and align as your drive for quick simple installation. • Tire Chains for a 2012 Ford Transit Connect XLT with 205/65-15 Tires

These chains will have solid grip on snow and ice and have anti-scratch nylon bumpers to protect your rims. As a side note,...

Before purchasing any tire chain check your vehicle's manual carefully and if in doubt speak to your local dealership. The Thule CS10 Size 090 tire chains you referenced, part # TH00204090, are indeed a correct fit...

This measurement is important because certain vehicles have restrictions regarding the amount of available space between each wheel well and tire. There may be a limited amount of room between your wheel and various braking or suspension components on your vehicle, thus prohibiting large chains from being used on your particular vehicle. The Thule Standard Snow Tire Chains CB-12, # TH01221090, which you reference, require...
