Video Transcript for Thule CB12 Snow Tire Chains Review - 2013 Acura ILX

Today on our 2013 Acura ILX, with tire size P215-45-R17, well be installing the Thule standard snow tire chains for passenger vehicles size 090. This is part number TH01221090. The CB12 offers colored coded attachment points to make installation easy and the D shaped links provide excellent traction. Its alloy steel construction is durable and corrosion resistant. Now to install them on the vehicle well need to get them out of the package and lay them flat. Be sure and get out any knots or kinks within the chain.

Once weve done that well slide the blue cable underneath the vehicle and around the tire. We can then grab both ends of the blue cable and bring it up to the 12 oclock position on the tire and connect the blue cable together. Well then allow the blue cable to roll behind the vehicles tire. Now here on the outside of the chain well grab the red chain link and the red hook at the 12 oclock position and connect them together allowing the chain to drape over the tire tread making sure it stays centered. Now here at the six oclock position youll see your snow chains tension holder.

Well place the chain link through the tension holder and pull it tight. Youll need to make sure that the chain runs through the red hook here on the side of the chain before you connect the red hook on the end of the rubber tensioner. That completes the installation of the Thule standard snow tire chain of our 2013 Acura ILX.

I have to say I'm extremely satisfied with these tire chains!! They're so aggressive and work well with my corolla. My at is front wheel drive and the weight of the motors sits perfectly in line with the tire/chain combination. They bite and dig right in the snow and ice. My drive way is very long as you can see and quite dangerous in snowy conditions. I've had numerous times where I've had to slip the chains on and it was a breeze. They're so easy to put on and off. I feel extremely confident throughout the winter season with the Thule tire chains in the back of my trunk. Thank you so much! You guys have great products going! 110489

Hi, Austin. Thanks for the review. I just purchased these same chains and am wondering if you have ever had any problem with the chains scratching or damaging the rims? Thanks

Hey John, no problem. No the chains never scratched my rims and Ive used them multiple times. I recently purchased a new set of rims and I have no fear that they will harm them either. And that was one thing that I was worried about, but they never scratched them!

so far so good. i spent an afternoon practicing putting them on and taking them off. got it down to about 7 minutes for both. just waiting for a nice ice storm to really try them out! also wanted to mention the customer service from etrailer was great. they mistakenly told me my order shipped the same day when in fact the item was not in stock. the next day i got an email and a phone call apologizing and asking if i wanted a different item, a refund or just wait till the chains came in. 2 days later they arrived. they were totally on top of it. thanks... 110210

I use the chain yesterday to bring my Nurse wife who works night shift to her work in the hospital. I live here in Long Island New York and she works in Jamaica Hospital in Queens. The chain makes it easy for me to navigate the snow. Would highly recommend to everyone who needs to be in a road in a severe weather like snow storm. 6215

Tire chains delivered earlier than expected and are even easier to put on than I thought. The plastic covered rear cable makes putting on the chains so easy and I don't have to hug a dirty wet tire. Will definitely recommend this site and use them again. 171865

NOTE: Ended up not needing chains, so I cannot attest to how well they would have performed. However, I did a test run and put them on the tires at home (wearing leather gloves) and was pleased with how simple it was. 109648

These Thule chains look a little light for long lasting, but time will tell. My only comment pre-use is that the directions for installation would have been just as helpful if written in Chinese. 162180

Comments

Etrailer has made a few videos to review the installation of these chains onto vehicles to show all the steps to supplement the basic included instructions. It is always recommended to do a few trial runs to familiarize yourself with the process, prior to being caught in the storm

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

I am a 63-year-old woman with a small frame and arthritis in both hands. I just did a practice run putting on the chains. 1) could not open case, needed to find a clippers to clip the little arrowhead catch at the top. 2) chains were EXTREMELY tangled together and took a long time to untangle -- why don't they package them in internal plastic bags? 3) first attempt to put chains on was a failure because they were still a bit knotted. I found that holding up the circle and letting the chains hang down like a basketball net, then carefully unhooking the circle and keeping all the chains pointing to the interior of the arc, on only one side of the blue "hoop", worked best. After that it was a snap. In spite of weak hands I could get enough tension on the chains (looked just like the picture in the video) and after driving the car forward slightly I adjusted it one notch tighter without problem. Had a couple of snags getting it off, and would appreciate instructions on the video. Haven't yet test the chains in snow so can't give a full rating of the product. Both the Review video and the Installation video show instructions but the installation video is a bit easier to follow. 174739

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

I live on a mountain top in Western North Carolina where one of our recent snow falls left 10 inches of snow the first night. I refer to my driveway as The Roller Coaster because it is so steep and curvy and at 6:30 the morning I first used the chains, it was so covered that I had to guess where it was. I have an '03 Subaru Forester and with my Thule chains, I was able to go where the snow plows hadn't gone with no traction problems whatsoever. It was a week before I was able to safely take them off the car, but they're in the back for the next time I need them. etrailer is fantastic! I ordered the chains on Saturday, Dec 25, got confirmation of my order that same day and had the chains the following Wednesday. I recommend both etrailer and these chains without any reservations on either! 6119

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

This is my third purchase from Etrailer. As always they delivered, again ahead of schedule. I can't give a complete review of the product because we are experiencing some unusually mild weather but I can say that the product arrived ahead of schedule, looks bomber, and came in a convenient carrying case. Previous purchases include a trailer hidden hitch and timbren suspension support for my 2007 Toyota Sienna. Both were supported by video/written instructions, available on etrailers website, and installed without a "hitch". Etrailer will continue to be one of the first websites I check for all my automotive needs! 30510

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

Ice... I laugh at ice... So... We got stuck at the in-laws this Christmas because the hill up to civilization was covered in ice and we drive a Corrola. Determined not to have this happen again I read some reviews and bought these chains. I put one side on as soon as we got them to make sure they were the right size and they fit my 185/65/15s perfectly. The chains are not round either, but angled. I think they will be what we need to make sure we can get out next time it ices... The video on etrailer was much more helpful than the graphic instructions provided for installation though. Thanks etrailer! 5057

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

I order these to put on my 2011chevy cruze and the fit great. Very important to make sure the chains are twist and kink free before sliding them under the car. It's fully possible to install the chains with out moving the car which it great! I do suggest retightening after driving 100 or so feet to make sure they are still secure. I bought these to help with traction with snow as this winter has been bad so far and I want to be prepared. Easy to install even though it was my first time it only too a couple mins. To install. Very pleased with these and love the storage case to keep the at the ready. 111260

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

The customer service is excellent! And the product arrived before schedule!! The chains and organizer are very good quality. I purchased the chains for a trip I was taking, so the arrival BEFORE the projected date was really great and gave my husband and myself a chance to do a trial run of putting them on the car. They were easy to install and something I could handle on my own. I didn't run into any snow, so cannot give a review on actual use, and that is the only reason I didn't give "excellent" in my rating. Definitely would recommend this site to others. 172475

These chains fit my Mazda 626 very well, and I was able to get to work when the roads were all but impassable for the ice that covered everything because of thee rain all day that turned to freezing rain. I was raised in Montana so am used to fighting snow, but this Arkansas freezing rain takes getting used to but with these chains I am not afraid to venture out no matter what the weather. Also, the people at etrailer.com arethe best to deal with, my questions were answered with great professionalism and courtesy. On a scale of 1-10 they rate a 12. 109839

Review from a similar Thule CB12 in Tire Chains

Easy to install and great traction! I just used these chains in Tahoe and they worked great! I was a little worried about installing them in the snow, but the design made it really easy because it's almost split into two sections that wrap around the tire instead of having to drive on top of them first. I would highly recommend doing a practice run before you actually need them, as the chains are a little intimidating at first, but after installing the first one, the second one was on in no time. Great product! 162770

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Under operating conditions for which these were designed, proper installation, and respect for all the guidelines provided, these chains will last season after season of use. Links breaking and premature wear are indicative of driving on pavement, we do provide a repair link if that does happen, and always advise chains be removed once you get to payment or lightly covered roads where the tires are able to make positive contact. Thanks again!

  • I was able to locate an online copy of the owners manual for a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon and found the tire chain information section. According to the manual for tire size 205/55R16 or 215/45R17 the maximum chain thickness cannot exceed 0.39 inches (10mm). For a 205/55R16, you can use Thule Self-Adjusting, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains, # TH00023097. These have a 9mm clearance. For chains right at 10 mm, you can use Self-tensioning Snow Tire Chains, # TH00204090. And for 0mm clearance we...

  • Snow Tire Chain Recommendation For A 1999 Ford Mustang GT
  • Before buying snow tire chains you will want to check your owners manual or with the Ford dealer to see if you can install snow tire chains on your 1999 Ford Mustang GT, or if there are any limitations. If you have the 225/55R16 tire size on your 1999 Ford Mustang GT I would recommend the Thule CB12 Snow Tire Chains # TH01221100. They have an internal clearance measurement of 12 mm which means they are a SAE Class S snow chain. A Class S snow tire chain has to have an internal clearance...

These chains are Class S compatible meaning they were designed for vehicles with limited clearance in the wheel wells. • For your 2005 Scion tc with p215/45R17 tires the Standard Snow Tire Chains for Passenger Vehicles by Thule - CB12 - Size 090, part # TH01221090, is the correct size for your tire. I spoke with our installer (the guy you see in the installation video I attached below) and he said you may be encountering a couple different problems. The first thing he said to try was to take the chains and lay them out, and look for any tangles, and make sure that none of the chains are twisted up at...

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for a 2012 Subaru Impreza with 205/50R17 Tires
  • First thing you need to do is check the owners manual of your 2012 Subaru Impreza to determine if there are restrictions on snow chain usage. For a similarly priced set of chains to the two you referenced that would install easily, give you much better traction and would last much longer I would recommend the Thule Chains # TH01221090. I had the chance to install a set of chains like this not long ago and was surprised at how easy they were to install. See install video. These chains...

  • Thule Snow Chains for Maximum Clearance on 2013 Scion FR-S
  • Clearance refers to the overall width or diameter of a tire chain. This measurement is important because certain vehicles have restrictions regarding the amount of available space between each wheel well and tire. There may be a limited amount of room between your wheel and various braking or suspension components on your vehicle, thus prohibiting large chains from being used on your particular vehicle. The Thule Standard Snow Tire Chains CB-12, # TH01221090, which you reference, require...

  • Tire Chains for a 2009 Mazda 5 with Cinturato P7 205/50R17 Tires
  • For tire chains a lot depends on what type of conditions you will be driving in and how often you need to use the chains. If you just want to have some chains in the vehicle and will rarely use them then going with cable style chains, # PW1034, with rubber adjuster # PW99 would work just fine. These chains are not going to offer the best traction or last the longest but will do in a pinch. For more longevity and traction the Thule CB12 chains # TH01221090 are a good choice especially...

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatch
  • Its hard to say exactly how much force would need to be exerted to get the rubber tensioner on the Thule Snow Chains # TH01221090. But judging off how most of the install videos we have for this product show the installer only using one hand to stretch the tensioner I would assume its not very difficult at all. These chains do not offer rim protection so you might see some light scratching of your wheels. I also attached a couple FAQ articles on snow chains for you to check out. Lastly,...

  • Tire Chains for a 2012 Ford Transit Connect XLT with 205/65-15 Tires
  • For tire size 205/65-15 the Thule CS10 chains, # TH00204090, CB12 chains, # TH01221090, and Pewag Servo RS chains, # PWRS73 are all Class S rated. This means the chains are less than 37mm above the tire tread and less than 15mm between the sidewall and the vehicle. The clearance is something to look at both above the tire and at the back side. To determine how much space is available you can turn the wheels all the way to the left or right. Then measure from the nearest component on...

  • How to Determine if there is Clearance to Use Tire Chains on a 2009 Volvo S40 with 205/50-17 TIres
  • What you will need to do first is consult the vehicle owners manual for specific information on the use of tire chains. To measure what you will want to do is turn the wheels all the way to the left. Then, measure from the back of the tire to the nearest component at the closest point between them. Then do the same with the wheels turned the other way and then straight. If any measurement is less than 12mm you will not have clearance. If your owners manual states a specific measurement...

  • Subaru Legacy 2004 Snow Chain Recommendation
  • The best way to determine what axles of your vehicle should have snow chains installed on them is to check the owners manual of your 2004 Subaru Legacy to see what they recommend and if there are any restrictions. Having chains on all wheels is ideal though as that will give you the best traction for stopping, turning, and accelerating. You don't want to run chains on dry pavement ever. That will wear them out very quickly and will damage the road. Chains typically have a speed rating...

The Thule tire chains that will work for your car are the Easy Fit CU9 Tire Chains, # TH04115100, and the K-Summit K33 Tire Chains, # TH02230K33.
