Video Transcript for Curt Specialty Trailer Hitches E-100 Review

Today were going to review part number E-100. This is the Curt RV Bumper 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver. This Curt RV bumper mount trailer hitch has a two inch square receiver opening, which is ideal for RV approved hitch accessories, such as bike racks and cargo carriers. This is intended for use on four inch square channel bumpers on the rear of many RVs and towable campers. It does have a black powder coat finish, which will resist corrosion. It does include the mounting hardware, the two carriage bolts and the two hex flange nuts. This hitch does have a weight capacity of 3,500 pounds gross towing weight capacity and a 350 pound tongue weight capacity.

You will want to check the towing weight capacity of the bumper youll be attaching this to and you never want to exceed the towing weight capacity of the bumper hitch. This hitch also has the elongated holes here on side to attach your safety chains to. I do want to give you a few measurements here. The overall width on this is seven and a half inches. Total from the bottom to the very top is eight inches and the square part to the top is six and a quarter inches.I did mention this will mount on a four inch square channel bumper, so as you can see the width on the inside is four inches.

Just to show you how this would mount, you would insert the carriage bolt through the two holes, use one of the hex flange nuts, square it on and just torque it down and then do the one on the other side. That should do it for review on part number E-100 .

The Curt 2” RV E-100 Hitch was received quickly and in good condition complete with all parts. The hitch is heavier than I expected but this is a good thing. I installed this on my used 35' Sabre 5th wheel to replace the OEM rear cargo carrier which did not suit my needs. The installation was easy and as expected. The Sabre bumper has a chrome plate trim piece attached by 2 small screws on either end that covers the top and face of the original black boxed bumper. I knew I had to trim out a piece the width of the bumper plate for the hitch to slide over for mounting and this was done with no surprises. The hitch does fit a four inch RV bumper but remember if ordering that the opened end of the hitch slot plates are flared out at the top for “clamping” action and narrows where the plates are 4 inches wide at the receiver end and there is no “give” there by design. So they may “fit” at the top but will only mount so far down if the bumper is wider than 4". Because of the low height of the Sabre bumper above the road surface, I mounted the hitch with the receiver “up” for more road clearance. I mounted a Rola 3 bike rack into the hitch but had only 2 bikes mounted. The hitch was excellent and I have no advice or comments for the hitch other than if you need a heavy duty add on hitch, buy this one. I did experience problems with the bike rack itself. It has a “Drop Down” feature to lower the bikes for easier removal. Due to the pivot design there's lots of play with the vertical neck of the rack and I needed to brace it better to reduce this play. At the end of a 35 foot RV the whipping action is very pronounced so be advised when using a bike rack that hinges near the hitch. I would highly recommend the E-100 and based on previous orders placed with E-Trailer I would highly recommend them also when ordering any trailer related item. 203781

Product seems to be very stout and well built. Mounted to my reinforced 4" bumper on 2004 Forest River Rockwood Roo. To clear the spare tire, I ordered an extra long ball mount. With everything mounted, the system seems to be very secure. I will be comfortable towing my boat with this. Etrailer's product descriptions and videos are excellent. 180039

Whathow did you reinforce your bumper? I have one of those flimsy plastic one that Im going to take off and install a 4 steel bumper on with plan to attach a receiver for a bike rack. Thanks!

comment by: Aaron - 07/16/2015

Aaron, when you are ready for your bike rack, please makes sure that you use a RV/Camper approved bike rack. These bike racks are tested and rated for the additional forces that will be experienced at the back of an RV or camper due to the extended distance from the rear axle. I have provided a link to our current offerings of RV/Camper bike racks for you to check out.

Rachael H - 7/17/2015

Aaron, the bumper had already been reinforced by the previous owner. The 4 steel tubular bumper is welded directly to the frame i-beams, and someone before me had welded a triangular plate to the top of the bumper and ibeam on each side where they meet. Ive towed my 16 BaylinerSingle Axle Trailer about 400 miles now and havent had any problems, and havent noticed any cracks anywhere in the bumper. This setup requires driving a little more slowly, max 65 mph, to prevent trailer sway, but it is a very scure and economical way to tow my units and family with one vehicle.

Great hitch & easy to install. experience w/ Etrailer & Nicole in particular was fantastic & I will absolutely make future purchase here. If Nicole was closer to my area, I would offer a job in a heartbeat! Many people sell the same products so the difference is service and I have no doubt etrailer has a good training program but she has a natural gift & care to go the extra step to make everything to smooth-very, very impressed. As for the Swagman bike rack- I like the rack & seems very sturdy in construction but it is a loose fit in the receiver. a fastener clamp/tightener should be recommended or added. I had one from a cargo carrier and used that to tighten up the "play" in the receiver area. I could see this being frustrating for anyone that didn't happen to have this part laying around their garage. Delivery was perfect & I plan to load up the rack this weekend. Thanks!! 44982

I haven't installed this yet but I expect it to work great for my needs-attaching my bike rack to my travel trailer. I'm extremely satisfied with the ordering, price and speed of delivery. Great customer service/email feedbacks from ordering to delivery. The E-100 is heavier/beefier then I expected (very good). And price wise, I had gone to two local hitch stores and was quoted $200 for a similar attachment. The local place also tried to upgrade me to welding to the frame. I don't need to tow anything. I would definitely recommend etrailer. 9565

This hitch receiver is by far the best one available for use on the 4" square bumpers found on RVs. The pull and twisting loads are properly distributed to the maximum possible surface area of the bumper rather than being concentrated at two or four bolt points as with other add-on receivers. With this design the only load on the bolts is dead vertical tongue/rack weight and the bolts are at least two sizes larger than on other designs. Considering the Etrailer pricing on these units there can be no excuse for settling for second best. 31713

Products received just as promised along with even an upgrade to quicker delivery. Thank you. We have just returned from a 3 week trip to Florida with various stops and the various products we purchased performed just as we had hoped. We have a 2013 Cougar Lite 5th Wheel and were very happy that the bikes were secure the whole time - particularly seeing that we had previously lost bikes off the back of a 5th wheel. 106794

Great price and fast shipping. I installed this on my 38 foot Fifth Wheel and was worried about how sturdy it was. Once I had it installed on the rear bumper and put the Swagman trail head RV bike rack in the hitch, it was solid. I loaded four bikes and went on our first trip which was 4 hours down the road with no problems. Recommend this unit due to its solid construction not to mention solid mounting hardware. 171280

This product is AWESOME! I needed a 2" receiver for a bike rack for my RV, I wasn't even sure such a product existed, and found this and it's great. Fit is perfect for a 4" bumper. I had to modify it a tad for upper clearance but that was just for my particular application and was no biggie. This product is really well built. And the service from etrailer is top notch as usual! 101388

This fit snug on to my back bumper of my Keystone Bullet. It took a bit of work to get it into place, but there is no wobble at all. I put my bike rack on it and this works great. I am excited to use this several weekends this summer and be able to have the kids bikes at the campground. 208383

Nice finish and design. I wish it was a little cleaner at the top of the bumper aesthetically. If there was a way to have the bolts on the bottom instead of the top, it would look better, and give me more confidence. Much better than anything else that I found. 33183

Great product, easy to install, only negative, some safety locking nuts would be better than the spin on and torque nuts that were supplied. I did use a safety system to make sure it does not come loose, but your average installer would probably not have access to. 15151

If you order one make sure your camper bumper IS EXACTLY four inches square I had to do a lot of filing and grinding to make it fit. When they say four inches they mean EXACTLY FOUR INCHES MAYBE A SMIDGE LESS but it is very heavy duty and will do the job 82429

Big, solid piece of steel that fit perfectly on my 5th Wheel's bumper. All needed hardward and diagrams included. NOW, if that bumper will hold up, I can tow my dirt bike. 59245

How did it hold up with the dirtbike I need to mount one as well

comment by: Jason - 01/27/2013

I believe he was using his for a trailer and not a dirt bike carrier if that is what you are looking into. At 350 pounds tongue weight capacity a carrier and dirt bike would really be pushing it, that is if there is a carrier manufacturer that tests and approves their carriers for use on an RV bumper. Your RV should have information on the bumper towing capacity. Compare it to the capacity of the hitch and just abide by whatever is less. We have a lot of RVers that tow a motorcycle behind their RV and have no issues. Just watch the ratings.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Use on the Back of a Crossroads 5th Wheel Trailer
  • We have a couple of different options in terms of trailer hitches for 5th wheel trailers. The Curt Hitch, # E-100, that you have referenced is designed to fit on 4 inch square channel bumpers. You will need to check to see if your bumper fits this description and if it is rated for this application. I recommend going with a frame mount hitch. • Curt Bumper Mounted Receiver Part # E-100 for Towing Small Boat Behind RV
  • The Curt bumper mounted receiver part # E-100 will serve that purpose. The receiver itself provides a 3500 lb towing/ 350 lb tongue weight capacity. This assumes that the 4 inch bumper on your RV has sufficient capacity to safely tow the towing/tongue weight of your boat and trailer. I would recommend checking with the RV manufacturer regarding the capacity of the bumper if it is not mentioned in the owners manual.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2013 Jeep Wrangler
  • Curt trailer hitch # E-100 is designed to fit on RV or trailers with 4 inch square channel bumpers. I cannot confirm fit on a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. I recommend a hitch designed to fit the 2013 Wrangler, # 87424. The extended shank provides better clearance with the rear mounted spare tire. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I also recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls,...

  • Trailer Hitch for Towing a Trailer Behind a 2006 Rockwood by Forest River Travel Trailer
  • I cannot make a recommendation for pulling a trailer behind another trailer. I know it is done, but there are many things to take into account when thinking about this endeavor. You will need to contact the trailer manufacturer to see if the bumper will have enough capacity to handle the loaded trailer weight and tongue weight. I am sure you will be told that it will not. You should also consider that sway can be a big problem when towing more than one trailer and proper loading of...

  • Whats the Difference Between Curt Hitch E-100 and C19101
  • The difference between the Curt RV Bumper Hitch # C19101 and the Curt RV Bumper Hitch # E-100 is the application. If you have a 4 inch square bumper you would want the # E-100, if you have a 2 inch x 4 inch rectangular bumper you would want the # C19101. If you check out the pictures I attached you can see how the mounting plates are different distances apart.

  • Comparing Curt Bumper Mount Trailer Hitch E-100 and Frame Mount 13703
  • Both the frame mount hitch # 13703 and the bumper mount # E-100 have 2 inch receivers. Both are rated for 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. The bumper mount E-100 is more limited as to what it will fit on. First, the bumper has to be rated for use with a hitch. It must be a 4 inch square continuous welded steel bumper. A bumper mount hitch in general is not as stable as a frame mount. The frame mount 13703 can be bolted or welded on. It fits box frames,...

  • Bumper Mount and Frame Mount Trailer Hitches for a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan
  • On most vehicles, the bumper beam is attached to the vehicle frame. A hitch that attaches to the bumper beam (a lot of Jeep and Dodge truck applications are like this) is just as safe and secure as a frame mount hitch. It would take an impressive amount of force and one heck of a crack in the road to pull the bumper off of a vehicle, provided the hitch is installed correctly. Your mechanic may be thinking of a hitch that attaches to a square bumper like # E-100. You would not use this...

  • How to Wire Up a Trailer so that a Second Trailer Could be Towed Behind it
  • The correct part you would need would be the 4-Pole Wiring Harness part # 118603. You would need to use quick splices like part # 804C to connect the wires of this harness to the correct wires of your travel trailer taillight wiring. The brown wires will run to the running light circuit, the green to the right stop/turn, the yellow to left stop/turn and the white to the ground circuit of the trailer. This will give you all of the taillight signals on a 4-way that you would need...

  • Will RV Bumper Mount Trailer Hitch # E-100 Fit a 4 Inch by 2 Inch Bumper on a Trailer
  • I do have a possible solution for adding a trailer hitch to your trailer but # E-100 will not fit because the bumper on your trailer needs to be 4 inches by 4 inches (100mm x 100mm). I recommend installing a frame mount trailer hitch, # 13703. This hitch can be welded or bolted to the frame of a trailer provided the trailer frame is 22 to 72 inches wide. If welding, the hitch should be installed by a qualified professional welder. I have included a link to the installation details for you...

  • What is the Weight Limit on Ultra-Fab 2 Inch Motor Home Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • The Ultra-Fab Motor Home Trailer Hitch Receiver, # UF35-946401, was designed with the RV/trailer application in mind. As such the additional torque from accessories bouncing in the receiver was taken into account when the weight capacity of 200 pounds was given to the hitch. You might want to consider going with something rated a little higher, like # E-100, or # UF35-946402, which both have a 350 pound capacity, because with your intended load you will be getting close to the tongue...

  • Trailer Hitch to Carry a Scooter at the Back of a 2013 KZ Trailer
  • The first thing you need to consider is whether or not your scooter carrier is rated for use at the back of a trailer. Most are not because there is considerably more bouncing and movement at the back of a trailer compared to the back of a vehicle. Out of all the carriers we have only 1, # UF48-979033, is rated for use at the back of an RV or trailer. I do not recommend the use of a bumper mount hitch such as # E-100 for carrying this much weight. The issue is that it is all tongue...

  • Hitch Cargo Carrier That Measures 48 x 36 to Carry Trike on Toyota FJ Cruiser with 2-Inch Receiver
  • If transporting the bike is the only use for the carrier you might instead consider a hitch-mount bike rack designed to carry a trike. We offer the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Trike Carrier # HR1000R-TRKADP that offers a 100-lb weight capacity and works with trikes with a wheelbase up to 74-inches and a track width up to 36-inches. • Hitch Recommendations for a Scamp Trailer Bumper
  • Depending on the dimensions of your trailer's bumper I believe we could have a solution for you that would not require welding. If you have a 4 inch by 4 inch bumper you could use the part # E-100. If you have 2x4 inch bumper you could use the # C19101. These have 2 inch openings though. For a hitch opening that measures 1-1/4 inch that would require welding on you would want the part # E-911. You will need to make sure that the bike racks you plan on using are rated for use on...

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations For Carrying 2 Bikes on the Bumper of an RV
  • We sell RV bumper hitches that would work well for you to carry an RV rated bike rack at the rear of your Montana 5th wheel trailer. If you have a 2 inch square bumper I would recommend the Curt Hitch part # C19101. If you have a 4 inch square bumper I would recommend the Curt Hitch part # E-100. Now for a bike rack you will need to get a rack that is rated for use behind an RV. The ride is much rougher at the rear of an RV when compared to a passenger vehicle, so a rack not rated for...

  • Recommended Cargo Carrier and Hitch for Rear of Travel Trailer
  • We do not offer a bolt-on cargo carrier, but you could certainly use a hitch mounted carrier. The first step would be to install a hitch like the Curt # E-100. The hitch is compatible with 4 inch square bumpers, and offers a 350 lb tongue weight capacity, which means that the weight of the carrier used plus the weight of the gear carried upon it could weigh no more than 350 lbs. Because of the extended distance between the rear axle and the back bumper of the average travel trailer,...

  • Receiver Needed for 5th Wheel with 4 Inch Bumper with 5-1/2 Inch Drop
  • Given the 5-1/2 inch distance between the bottom of the frame members and the bottom of your bumper, the # 13703 will not fit your application. The E-100 you mention is intended for use with 4 inch square bumpers, as well as the Ultra-Fab # UF35-946402. If you have clearance problems at the rear of the bumper, the Ultra-Fab receiver might be a good alternative as it connects to the underside of the bumper using U-bolts, rather than slipping around it like the E-100 does. Either receiver...

  • The Curt E-100 Trailer Hitch Receiver is meant to be used on 4 inch square channel bumpers. You will need to measure your bumper and check to see if it is 4 inches square. The maximum capacity of this hitch is 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross towing weight. Check the owner manual of the trailer and see what the bumper capacity is. If it is less, you must abide by the lower number. Make sure whatever bike rack or cargo carrier you will be using is built for use on the...
