Today were going to review part number 1039800. This is the Car Pack Rooftop Cargo Carrier Bag. Its made by Highland. Now, this bag holds ten cubic feet of gear. It will expand to 15 cubic feet and Ill show you how that works in a few minutes. On the top is bungee cord thats crisscrossed across the whole top and what thats for is if your bag is not fully packed, you can compress the bag down and then tighten the bungee cord and lock it in place with this locking knob on the side.
Now, that will hold everything inside in place. Itll help and it also will, an added benefit is its going to lower your profile so aerodynamically youll have an advantage and maybe save a little gas. If the bag is really fully packed then, of course, you loosen the bungee cord and get it to where its exactly tight enough to hold everything in place and then again tighten it in place with that locking knob on the side. Also, on the top is an adjustable strap and this will help you get the bag on and off your roof. Its not for carrying, but it works very nicely for helping you to get the bag up or down.
Im going to show you now how the bag works. Its pretty clever and very easy to use. First of all, there are six compression straps; two in the front and two on each side and they have very simple buckles that work like a seat belt and everybody knows how to use that. Even if the flight attendants dont think we do, we all know how to use that. Now, if you have a lot of strap left over after youve packed up the bag, all you have to do is bundle it up and then Highland very nicely provides these hook and loop strips and you can wrap that around the excess strap and now that will not flap around in the wind while youre driving and thats nice because, you know, that can be really annoying.
Youll notice that on the flap that goes all the way around, theres a reflective strip and there is a reflective strip on all sides and that makes the bag easy to see at night maybe keep you a little safer when other drivers can see your bag. Now under the bag you have two sets of zippers, here and here. The top zipper is very heavy duty. It goes three quarters of the way around so when youre ready to pack up your bag, all you have to do is flip the top over and youve got the whole bag open to pack up. Beneath that, lets see where it starts, here we go.
Beneath that you have another zipper that goes three quarters of the way around, and that gives you that many more inches of material so you see it expands the bag from ten cubic feet of storage space to 15 cubic feet of storage space. So, well close that up for now because I want to show you something else about the flap. In addition to having that reflective strip, it also has a hook and loop strip up here under the flap and theres a sewn in hook and loop strip down here on the bag, so when the bags all packed and youve got the zippers closed and youre ready to go, fold down the flap and secure it in place with these hook and loop strips, and that will help to keep rain, snow and dirt away from the zippers and out of your bag and it will help to keep everything inside nice and dry. The zippers, by the way, are just like regular luggage zippers which means, of course, you can lock them with a padlock. We do sell those separately. You also can secure the bag to your side rails or your cargo basket however you want to do that with a cable lock and we do sell those separately also. Now, lets see how this bag measures. It is 39 inches long. Its 32 inches wide and its 14 inches high when youre using ten cubic feet of space. If you use the zipper and make 15 cubic feet of space, then it becomes 21 inches tall. I am very impressed with the overall design of this product! It looks great and holds a lot more than it looks like it can hold. We used it for 3 straight weeks on multiple trips across the country. It withstood all weather conditions (haven't used it in winter conditions though).
I didn't give it 5 stars because of these two specific reasons:
1) One tie-down snapped right off when we were loading it for the first time. It was under the same tension as all the other tie-downs. I attribute that to defective sewing.
2) There is a zipper that's used to expand the bag to increase its volume. After the first leg of our trip I noticed that the zipper was ripped from where it was sewn. Inspection showed that the Velcro that is used to hold the flap down (to keep water from entering the bag) constantly rubs on the zipper. The vibration of the vehicle eventually destroys the zipper making it useless. After our 3-week trip, the whole zipper system was destroyed.
I suggest putting some kind of protection between the velcro and the zipper to protect it until the manufacturer fixes this design flaw.

We purchased this bag for our recent trip. The bag fit 3 beach chairs and 3 folding dock chairs among towels and blankets - much more than we anticipated. We drove through heavy rain and the materials were still dry for the most part. Highly recommend this for a Honda 2012, CR V. We used it with roof rails and it worked great. The cargo bag worked great as a place to carry items that would cut down our interior space; I got our luggage in it, and still had room left over. I did have to rearrange things a couple times in order to get the most efficient use of the space available, but was surprised at how easy it was to use once I got the hang of it. We traveled through some wet weather, and I had used plastic bags to protect valuables, but the flaps closed enough that the bags were not necessary.
