Video Transcript for Thule ProRide Roof Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to taking a look at the Thule Pro Ride Roof Bike Rack, which is a clamp on, or channel mount version, part number TH598003. The Thule Pro Ride is a roof bike rack that can carry up to one bike. It doesn't require any wheel removal, and it grips your bike by the frame. It also has wheel straps for both tires. To make sure we don't over torque our clamp onto our frame, we have this torque-limiting dial to tighten it down with. Also, we have this area here, which you can insert a lock core, so once this is tightened down, you can lock it into place, and secure your bike to the bike rack. The wheel straps are ratcheting wheel straps, meaning when you loosen them up a little bit, they'll ratchet it down into place.

Can either use the channel mount version, which is what we have now, or you can install a clamp style, and that's going to fit with your square bars, some aluminum bars, and some factory roof racks as well. Now, another nice feature about this torque-limiting dial, is once you're finished using the bike, you want to take it off, to release the clamp, all you have to do, is there's a gray button underneath here that you push down, and that will release is. Now, how this actually tightens down to your roof rack, is it clamps into place, like so, and the clamp in the front here, notice it also has a cut out for a Thule lock core. Once you install this to your roof rack, you can install the lock core, and it will be secure to your rack as well. Everything is tightened down. Just push it in place, and it's ready to go. Also, both wheel cradles are adjustable the length of the bike rack, to accommodate difference size bikes.

The bike rack itself is made from a lightweight anodized aluminum, so it is corrosion resistant. It also comes with a limited lifetime warranty. This is also able to carry fat bikes, with a fat bike adaptor, part number TH5981, which is also sold separately. This will also enable you to carry one bike with up to five inch wide tires. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the bike rack, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. Now, there's two ways you can do that. You can either go by channel mount, or by clamp on.

Now, since we actually have arrow bars already installed on our vehicle, we'll go ahead and show you the channel mount way first. It mounts into the channels with these square bolts here. We'll have two at the front, and then one at the rear. To install it, we'll first remove the rubber strips at the top of our arrow bars. Normally, you would put the accessory into place and then cut the strips to put it around it, but for demonstration purposes, we'll just take them out for the install. We'll begin to slide in our bolts here.

Now, the rear bolt is adjustable to accommodate different widths of cross bars. We'll line up our bolts, just push this into place. Then we'll go around to the front and make sure it's straight before we tighten it down. With our bike rack where we want it, we'll close up our end caps. We'll start to tighten down our clamps here. Just turn them to the right. We'll try it out every now and then, just to make sure it's not too tight, or too loose. We'll repeat this for our other clamps as well. Now, we're ready to install our bike. Now that we've shown you how to attach this with the channel mounts, we'll go ahead and show you the clamp on style, as well. We'll first remove our channel mounts here. Simply unscrew the channel mounts. I'm going to repeat this for the other channel mounts. Now we'll take our clamps, and put them through the two openings here, and the one off to the side as well. We'll slide it in like so, til it fits into place, and we'll do this first at all of our connection points. Then we'll take our T-screws, attach them to our plastic clamps. We'll have to put them up through the bottom first, like so, and then attach them. Again, we'll repeat this for the other three clamps. Now, the two longer T-bolts go in the front, and the shorter one's going to go in the rear. We'll just loosely install them for now, just to hold them in place. Now, you notice at the rear here, we have two holes. The one here is specifically marked for the channel mount, so for our clamps, the screw will go through the second hole. Now we'll set out bike into place, sure clamps go around the bar. Some adjustments in the rear here, push that into place, and we'll go up towards the front and make sure it's straight. Once we're sure it's straight, we can actually start tightening it down. We'll take our T-bolt, put our clamp over our T-bolt like so. Then we'll just simply start tightening it down. Make sure that the T-bolt is lined up, like so, then like before, we can just simply tighten it down, until it's nice and tight around our bar. All right, we'll repeat this for our other brackets. Now, we got our bike rack prepped to put our bike into place. We'll start with our wheel straps here. You'll push at the bottom of the tabs here to release those on both sides. Then we'll lift up our clamp. Now we can grab our bike. Now, we'll place our bike onto our rack. Making sure it's in this position. Now, to tighten the clamp down, you come to this knob here, and turn it to the right. All right. That's good. Now, I'll adjust our wheel cradles. Put our strap through. Now, the nice thing about these straps, is that they're ratchet straps, so they just ratchet down into place. All right, that's good. Now, we'll repeat that process for the rear tire. All right, our bike is secure, and now we're ready to hit the road. First we'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side-to-side action, such as making turns, or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the alternating speed bumps, this will show you how it looks driving on uneven pavement, or potholes. Finally, we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway, or parking lots. There you have it for the Thule Pro Ride Roof Bike Rack, part number TH598003.
