Thule Criterium Roof Mounted Bike Rack Review

Video Transcript for Thule Criterium Roof Mounted Bike Rack Review

Today we are going to review part number TH598 from Thule. This is the Thule Criterium roof-mounted bike rack. And what this rack does is, it mounts to a variety of different rooftop racks on vehicles, be it a factory roof rack or other brands that are out there. We will go ahead and cover the points of this bicycle rack and show you how it works, how it gets connected, and how it looks on a typical application.

We will cover some of the features of this bicycle rack first off, the rear wheel tie-down that goes over the rim of the rear wheel and latches it into place. This is moveable up and down the rail, too. And moving up the rail is the rear tie-down point, where actually this rack right here wraps around the rail of your roof rack and gets latched into place. The next point is the jaws right here. This actually grabs the downtube of your bicycle and holds it into place. It is padded, with some light grooves in there to give you some room for the cables on your bicycle. And this jaw is activated by this knob down here. And basically the operation of this is you tighten down the knob here. It clamps down on the bicycle frame. And then when you want to release the clamp, there is a little trigger on the bottom here. And on the bottom there are, of course, two more hooks that will latch onto the front bar of your roof rack. And at the front of the bicycle rack here is a front wheel tie-down point. It works just like the back wheel, so obviously in this case you do not have to worry about taking the wheel off the bicycle to mount it on this rack.

We have got a rack just sitting on our crossbars for now. Let us go ahead and install it and clamp it into position. Just get that latch there and then just go ahead and tighten the handle down. When you get it just snug, then you can go ahead and lock down the handle itself. OK, and then we just go ahead and repeat the same thing for a clamp on the back side. You will have to move the cradles for each individual bike, and also the jaw that actually clamps onto the bike is adjustable, too, on there. It is a good idea to put the jaw up at about a 45-degree angle and then go ahead and install your bike. Just hold your bike up there with one hand. Take the other hand and tighten the knob, and it clamps into place. Then all you have to do is go back to your wheel cradles and strap them down. All within a few seconds, your bike is strapped down on the bicycle rack and it is ready to go on down the road. All right, and that covers our review of part number TH598 from Thule, the Thule Criterium roof-mounted bike rack.

  • Availability of Replacement Parts for Thule Criterium Roof Bike Rack # TH598
  • All of the replacement parts for the Thule Criterium Roof Bike Rack, part # TH598, you have mentioned are sold individually. The Thule Replacement Ratcheting Wheel Strap, part # 853-6512, will be the replacement strap for the Thule Criterium bike rack. It is not a replacement for the button and strap. • Will a Thule Roof Mount Bike Rack or Cargo Box Fit Rola Crossbars
  • The Thule Criterium Bike Rack, # TH598, fits on crossbars no wider than 2-3/4 inches and no taller than 1-1/2 inches. The Rola Crossbars included with # 59829, are 3-1/8 inches wide, so the Thule rack will not fit. Rola does make a bike rack that will fit their bars, it is a fork mount, # 59875. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view. The Atlantis Cargo Boxes, like # TH686BXT, use the QuickGrip mounting hardware which will fit the Rola crossbars. • How to Carry 5 Bikes on a 2003 Honda Odyssey with Factory Roof Rack
  • As far as the roof goes for your 2003 Honda Odyssey, there will not be enough space for 5 bikes. You could get 3 up there probably at most though you would most likely need to alternate the directions the bikes are facing. Because of this I recommend installing a trailer hitch, # 87479, and using a hitch mounting bike rack. We have several 5-bike racks, see link to the right. All of them will fit the Class III trailer hitch mentioned above or any 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. On a...

I recommend the Thule Rapid Aero bars because they are strong, sturdy, light weight, and their design cuts down on wind noise. You will need Thule Rapid Aero Crossroad Roof Mounted Railing Foot Pack, # TH450R, and Thule AeroBlade Aluminum Load Bars, # THARB47. You will then be able to use the Thule Echelon Roof...

The easiest and quickest way is to remove the bike rack from the roof if possible so it is easier to work. Remove the end cap nearest the wheel holder that is affected.
