Swagman RV and Motorhome Ladder Mount 2 Bike Rack Review

Video Transcript for Swagman RV and Motorhome Ladder Mount 2 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Swagman RV and motorhome ladder mounted two bike rack, part number is S80630. Our Swagman RV or motorhome ladder mounted bike rack is a great solution for getting your bikes where you need to go when you're traveling in your motorhome. It's an all aluminum construction, so it's going to be very corrosion resistant for you. The pads are fully adjustable. These will go up and down, going to help it fit a wide variety of ladder sizes with the different rung lengths in between, we can easily adjust those up and down. As you can see, all the weight of the bikes are going to be supported by these two sturdy hooks here on the top that are going to go around the rung of the ladder. They're designed in such a way that you really have to have the bike rack up on pretty steep angle to get them off, so I'm not going to really have any worry of them coming off. Designed to fit the round, the oval shape, the more squared off shape, so a lot of different applications that it's going to fit.

They've got a good coating on it that's going to protect our ladder rungs from any scratches or any scuffs. The cradles or cratons, have deep grooves in them here. That's going to help accept any of our bike cables. They're flexible so a wide variety of frame sizes is going to fit in there. Then we've got a good flexible rubber strap there that's going to come around the down tube of our seat and really secure our bikes to our rack. The end of each of our dual arms, we have a reflector, it's going to help us stay visible and keep people from, you know, potentially running into it.

With the dual arm design, it's really going to stabilize your bike as it's riding, rather than like a single post design would allow it to rock back and forth. With the three cross braces that go on the rack, really gives it a nice stiff feel, that's a good tight frame feel. As you can see, around our middle brace here, we do have a strap that's going to come down around the rung of our ladder. The strap's provided. That's used just to put down force on it, keep our rack from moving up and down or side to side. Then the excess of the tag end, we're actually going to use that around the frame of our bike to secure it in place.

Now we're going to get our bike loaded up. The first step's going to be to undo the cradle straps, expose those cradles, and we'll lift the rear tire of our bike up, we'll slide our bike right on down, adjust your pedals. You don't want them to come into contact with your ladder. Then just let that down tube of the seat slide right into the top. We're going to bring our straps around. We'll just secure them here on the other side to hold our bike in place.

Get the one on the front, or the one down here towards the bottom, the one on the top. As you can see, we've mounted our bike with our wheels facing inward. That's going to keep them from hanging over past the edge of our RV. The seat and handle bars are tucked in nicely. We'll now just bring our excess tag end of our strap there, bring it around our bike, and secure it here in the back side. Another great feature that we have and can really allow us to get several sizes of bikes on here, are the fully adjustable cradles. As you can see, we're going to be able to move these in and out to accommodate our different bike sizes. As you can see here, we've got our second bike loaded up. We are going to have a second cam buckle strap. This should go around the frame of our bike, around our bike rack and also around the ladder. We want to get full security there. It's also good because it's going to go around our other bike too. Bring this right out here. The strap's a good length, you're actually going to be able to go around your rim of your bike too there, to keep it from moving around as you're traveling. Pull that up, secure our excess strap and we're ready to head down the road. That will complete today's look at the Swagman RV and motorhome ladder mounted two bike rack, part number S80630. .

There are many options available for transporting a pair of bikes. After researching the products I decided this particular RV Ladder Rack would be best for my bikes and Motorhome. It was also, one of the best priced options. The cushion pads are necessary to protect my exisiting rear mounted RV ladder. The sturdy rubber brackets for the bike frame are necessary to secure the bikes. Other similar products are lacking these two features. Unfortunately, the bikes must be mounted in a vertical position. On both mountain bikes, 21 speed, the gear components interfered with securing the frame to the attached brackets. It is difficult to lift the bike and get the bike's cross frame on the brackets. To prevent potential damage to the Motorhome I found it necessary to remove the bike's front tire in order to secure the handle bar so it would not bang into the Motorhome's right tail light. Bottomline, I'm only able to mount one of the two 21 speed bikes on this rack. It is just as practical to place the bike inside my towed vehicle. Using only the components that came with the rack, the bike was secured on the rack and does not come loose while driving. The manufacturer did not put much quality into the straps. The ends became fray after the first attempt to pass the webbing through the undersized buckle. It takes a pair of needle nose pliers to pass the webbing through the buckle slot. I'm not able to read or speak french so the instructions that came in the package were of no use for me. I used the etrailer online instructions to asemble the rack. 21243

Poorly designed -- the rack is not stable on the ladder and tends to be susceptible to canting to one side or the other. Additionally, the rubber mounts for securing the bikes are simply not up to the task. I couldn't find a safe way to use this even by using additional cam straps. The rack was returned. 50953

HiI agree that this is a well designed and simple product to use. My only complaint is that the rubber securing straps are not robust enough, 2 out of the 4 broke on my rack withing weeks. There isnt a spot on the web site that I can see to order some spares. The rack still works fine with the bikes secured using other straps.

We are looking into getting the straps added as a replacement part.

It fits well on my View, in spite of the fact that the bottom half of my ladder folds up in front of the fixed upper part. My wife's bike frame is smallish, and the seat downtube is too short for the spacing of the rack, but I offset it (toward the seat) and it works fine. Since I'm carrying two mountain bikes, I had to remove the front wheels to keep the handlebars from hitting the camper. Oh, and although the instructions don't mention it, you have to put the two bikes facing in opposite directions. Now I need to rig some sort of spacer to keep the hanging bikes fromswinging fore and aft. Very happy, all in all. 29445

The product ordered shipped within 24 hours and arrived in a timely fashion. The product arrived in excellent condition and was very easy to assembly. 6 screws with a provided Allen key and you were done. The product easily attached to my RV ladder as advertised. Although assembly was obvious to me, I did note was the instructions were not provided in English. This is the first time I have ever experienced the lack of English instructions when they were provided in other languages. 21713

These are very solid, well built carriers. I have some very heavy duty (actually army surplus) bikes that I could only get one bike on - but for the most part I could get two bicycles on fairly easily. I actually bought five of these to mount inside a covered trailer - so now all of my kids bikes (all six) have a cosy loft to ride upon, along with my wife's bike an my bike. I would definitely recommend to a friend, etc. I think I own more of these than any other consumer! 55330

The item is very well made and was very easy to put together. We had purchased new bike's that had shocks for the seats unfortunately the shocks interfered with mounting the bike's, we just could not make it work, however we returned the bikes and plan to purchase new one's that will fit because we feel the quality and value of this rack is worths the change. 58198

Works great, if only there was a way to do 4 bikes instead of 2. But we just put the other two on the floor in the trailer with blankets between and wrapped around. We found the hitch racks just are too bouncy on the back of a trailer 44033

Thule does not carry any hitch mount bike racks that are designed to be used behind a trailer or RV. For a bike rack to use behind your fifth-wheel trailer that will fit your 2 inch receiver, I would recommend the Swagman XC 2 Bike Carrier, part # S64650. If you have a spare tire mounted...

  • Because of the additional bouncing and jarring that occurs at the rear of an RV or fifth wheel due to the long distance between the rear axle and the bumper (remember riding in the back seat of the school bus when it went over a bump?), only certain bike racks are recommended for use on an RV. We do not offer a 2 bike platform rack designed for use on the back of an RV or fifth wheel that has sufficient clearance to clear your ladder. The Swagman XP 3 bike rack, part # S64910-2 offers...

  • RV Ladder Bike Rack Recommendation for a Lance Model 1885 with 2 inch Ladder Supports
  • I have a ladder rack bike rack solution for you, but the Surco 2 Bike Carrier # SP501BR that you referenced would not work for you since it is designed to work on ladders with 1 inch diameter supports and you have 2 inch diameter supports. From hitch racks like the part # S64955, ladder rack racks like the Swagman RV Rack part # S80630, and racks that attach to the...

  • Trailer Hitch Extender for Bike Rack on Rear of Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • I would not under any circumstance recommend using a hitch extender at the rear of a fifth wheel. Using an extender will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch (the maximum amount of weight that can safely be hung from the hitch) by 50 percent. This could place the capacity of the hitch as low as 100 lbs, depending on if your hitch is a Class I or II. This would mean that the weight of the bike rack plus the bikes stowed on it couldn't exceed 100 lbs. Because adding the extender...
