Pop and Lock Tailgate Lock Installation - 2012 Toyota Tacoma

Video Transcript for Pop and Lock Tailgate Lock Installation - 2012 Toyota Tacoma

Today on our 2012 Toyota Tacoma, well install the Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock, part number PAL8521. First well start by opening up the rear tailgate and remove the removable fasteners securing the rear tailgate cover. Then well remove the rear tailgate cover and set aside all for reinstallation later. As you can see, this will expose the backside of the rear tailgate handle and wiring for the backup camera. Now well go ahead and remove the driver side rod from the handle assembly. Well simply remove the red tab and remove the rod.

Now well go ahead and push it out of the way as we remove the 10mm bolts securing the handle assembly to the tailgate here on the driver side. Now we can take the Pop & Lock Actuator Assembly and mount and set it in to position here on the driver side and re-secure it with the 10mm bolt. Quick tech tip, this 10mm bolt has been known to back out over time so you can add a lock washer to try and prevent this. Well be using the split lock washer style. Next well go ahead and reinstall the driver side latch rod.

Now well take the short-wired lead provided with our install kit and feed the wire through the drain holes at the bottom side of the tailgate. However for this application, the drain holes are not large enough to feed the wire and connect you through, so well be adding our own grummet to feed the wires through. First well go ahead and drill a pilot hole and then drill out the larger sized hole and install the grummet. Now with our grummet installed, we can go ahead and feed the wires through and up to the actuator. Next well feed the black connector on the short wire end between the bed and the tailgate down underneath the vehicle.

This will be the connector that will attach the long wire that will get fed up to the cabin of the vehicle. And in case you ever wanted to remove the tailgate, simply remove these two connectors so that the tailgate can simply be removed. Well go ahead and make connection with the blue to blue wire and the brown to green wire, attaching the bolt-style connector. Next well take the long wire and harness provided with our install kit and underneath the vehicle, and plug into the lead that we just fed down between the bed and the tailgate. We can plug into it and start routing it along the frame rail, keep in mind when routing your wires, you stay away from excessive heat such as exhaust or moving components such as the steering or suspension.

Quick tech tip, you can make it easier to route your wire using a fish wire which can be a stiff piece of wire or in this case well be using a piece of air tubing. Well simply use some black electrical tape to tape our wire to the tubing and pull it to the frame as needed. Well be routing the wire all the way from the rear of the vehicle up to the engine compartment. Then well go in to the manufacturers boot or grummet into the cabin of the vehicle. Well go ahead and take our utility knife and cut a hole into the grummet. With our hole made, well now go ahead and take the wire and push it through the grummet, into the cabin of the vehicle. Next well go ahead and get inside the cabin of the vehicle and pull some of the wire through. Now that weve got our wire routed into the cabin, well need to go ahead and disassemble both the threshold for the driver and the drivers passenger door. Then well remove the kick panel at the drivers door and the lower half of the B pillar cover. Well set all of our pieces aside for reinstallation later. Our remaining pane will be the B pillar panel which again well have fasteners underneath the panel to pop free and then slide it out of the way. This will expose the manufacturers wiring running underneath the threshold and the B pillar. Were looking to access the wiring that runs up the B pillar and signals the lock for the driver side rear passenger door. Now that weve located the wiring, well go ahead and use our utility knife, cut back the black electrical tape and protective cover. Next well need to locate the wires that operate the lock mechanism for the door. For this application, well be utilizing the blue wire with the pink tracer and the blue wire with the black tracer. Using the blue wiretaps provided with the install kit, well go ahead and take the wiretap, put it over the blue wire with the pink tracer, and then creep it down. Well repeat the same process with the blue wire with the black tracer. We can then connect the pre-attached pate thermos to the wiring harness to our wiretaps. Now this time it doesnt matter which wire we plug in to which tap as if the operating is wrong or opposite of the vehicle, well simply change it at the Pop & Lock. Now with all our connections made, we can go ahead and secure our wiring, and reinstall the interior trim panels. Any open connection points outside the vehicle other than the weather pack connector well use some black electrical tape to wrap them up such as the bullet connectors at the Pop & Lock assembly. Quick tech tip, before you reinstall everything, recommend to go ahead and operate the Pop & Lock system to make sure it functions properly. As you can see, Pop & Lock is operating opposite of the key fob that were using, so well go ahead and switch the two connectors. Now we can operate the key fob and it functions with the Pop & Lock assembly. Now well go ahead and use our black zip ties provided with our install kit to secure our wiring starting from the inside and working our way back to the tailgate. With everything secured, we can now go ahead and bundle up the excess wire inside the tailgate, secure it with a couple of black zip ties and reinstall the tailgate panel. And that will complete the install of our Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock, part number PAL8521 on our 2012 Toyota Tacoma.

Readers: I think the following is very useful information. Perhaps a bit wordy, but you should consider......& take the time to read. It might answer a few questions that I had myself before purchasing the product. Product is high quality, very simple to install, and functional. Locking function is simple: It extends and retracts a steel bar to either allow or obstruct the movement of OEM cam which pulls the rods which acuate the side tailgate latches. Absolutely everything is included in kit for a one-stop installation (no need to run to hardware store to aquire missing parts...) Video provided by is extremely accurate. A novice installer would benefit from the instructional. Even an experienced tech would appreciate it. My truck is a '10 Tacoma w/ Extended Cab (the model where the rear doors open "backwards"). The factory power wires are located behind the front kick-panel, not under the floorboard. ...should be obvious because there are no power locks extending any further back than the front door. Therefore, remove the floorboard edges for routing the wires to the front, but don't look there for any OEM wires to splice into because they don't exist until you reach the front kick-panel. It's a maze of wires, but with some evaluation, common sense, and process of elimination, you'll find the Blue-Black and Blue-Red wires. (Side note: The Blue-Red looks a bit like Blue-Pink). Without sounding conceited, I consider myself an expert installer. The project took me about 1 hour (with the majority of time taking care to do a quality job of routing the Pop-Lock power wire from tailgate to the front.) In order to assist your customers, I wish to comment on two alternatives in my installation: Instead of drilling a new hole in bottom of tailgate as video describes, utilize the existing camera wire loom. Take some time to unlatch the support clips and carefully cut the loom open. It's a tight fit, but with enough patience, the PopLock wires can be inserted into the OEM camera wire loom and follow the same route. This results in a very clean and professional looking installation. The second alternative was to splice the Pop-Lock wires into the PASSENGER side Blue-Black and Blue-Red wires instead of the Driver side. Reason is Functionality: Most vehicle owners have the OEM Remote Transmitter to lock/unlock the doors. We expect only the driver door to unlock with one click, and the remaining doors to unlock with two successive clicks. I wanted my tailgate to follow this same pattern. I didn't want my tailgate locking / unlocking every time I pushed the buttons. Even if you try to be slick and unlock the driver door by old-fashioned insert-key-into-lock-cylinder-and-turn..... wrong. The door-lock cylinder mechanism has a sensor and will send an unlock signal to the Pop-Lock regardless. Final Comment: I love it. I have a higher comfort level knowing my items are more secure, and that the tailgate latch is completely unmodified from the outside, meaning no interference with the OEM camera, either. Pop-Lock is well worth the investment. 116146

This is an excellent product, however when I opened the box it was plain to see there was no split loom covering over the supplied wiring harness. etrailer was very apologetic and was willing to send me the split loom or credit me the cost of the covering. ($6) Plus they were available to answer the phone on a Saturday! The installation video posted on this site was very helpful. My particular vehicle is an access cab, so there were a few differences. No need to go beyond the driver side kick board covering to find the correct wires for connection. I also drilled my own hole and used a 1/2" grommet in the bottom of the tail gate for a cleaner install. One tip I would suggest is to find a block of wood equal to the gap between the tailgate and body of the truck for drilling this hole. I noticed on the video the technician did not do this. Very important if you want a clean hole in the metal. Product works as advertised. Not going to lie, I was upset with the lack of split loom covering on the wiring harness. Overall I think is a great source for parts and information. -Mark 97813

Pop and Lock recently changed these kits. They no longer include the wire loom. Per the requests of many installers, they opted for a heavy jacket around the wire rather than a corrugated loom that for some was making installations slower. A smooth jacket is easier to to snake through tight areas than a corrugated loom. Once we were aware of this change, we got the ball rolling to update our photos and shortly we will have all of these listings updated.

This product was used on a 2013 Toyota Tacoma 2wd 4 door Prerunner. Awesome product and I love the video, just a "breeze to install" said my son who spent about an hour. What I like about this lock compared to the key lock is obviously no key, but you can lock yourself in while camping, you know in case a bear gets a little curious. We used loctite on the bolt threads based on other reviews and also he choose to route the wire harness straight up the center channel panel instead of going through the engine compartment and used silicone to fill and gaps. I will definitely come back to eTrailer, their customer service is great, the shipping was fast and the website was easy to maneuver. 89808

The product information says installs in minutes, not true, installs in a hour if your proficient with your hands and autos. I had a little trouble with the wiring instructions, but received excellent tech support, which cleared things up and the installation went flawlessly. The product works great, but will see if it holds up to long term use. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting to put a lock on the tailgate of their truck, what a great convenience instead of a keyed lock. 88323

Update its been a year later and this product works great, no problems.

Good product, and it worked!! Its loud when it operates and it rattles when you close the tailgate. but nothing that a fabricated bracket and itssome sound deadening material can't fix.. Overall its worth it. 62929

Going great, no complaints.. Excellent product, recommend it to all my friends with a Tacoma. I still dont know why Toyota doesnt use that as an option.

it is an good lock for the tail gate it you have a one of the hard top bed covers but, you have to do a little modification to it. Ok just by installing to with the one screw (using a lock nut) if you apply enough force to the tail gate handle it will move from its place and the gate will open (Pop&lock needs to fix this problem). What i did is i use tie wraps to hold it in place so if you force the tailgate handle it will not move. I thinking on making a better modification but for the time being this works fine. 114364

Great product, highly recommended if you need to lock your tailgate. Much more convenient than carrying an extra key plus there are no ugly aftermarket parts showing. Installation was easy thanks to the etrailer video. Can be challenging (but not impossible) to do by yourself so having a buddy would be worth paying them a few beers. Like other reviewers have said, it does make a bit of noise when the mechanism opens and closes but it is not a deal breaker for me. Be sure to put the lock washer in, I can see how the bolt will come loose after repeated use. 66815

Yes I still like the lock, it works the same as when I installed it, just great!

Great idea! One central power lock installed inside the tailgate. Easy to install from mechanical point of view. Instruction is very clear at this step. Unfortunately wiring hook up is very unclear in installation instruction. NO pictures or drawing. I've spend 3 hours to figure out where to hook-up the power lock. Once I've installed is working great!!! I love it. Stan 17353

I installed this lock on my 2013 Tacoma 4x4 Crew Cab. The lock was easy to install and took about 4 hours (taking my time). The Pop a Lock kit contained all the hardware required for the install and there was no surprises. The lock works well! I'm really glad I bought this. 96819

This product is simple to instal and i have no handy mechanic experience. The video provided by etrailer is good but there is an easier way to get the cable inside the cab to get the wire connection. Underneath the drivers side on a 2013 tacoma trd double cab there is a wire cap that is just beneath the drivers side where u need to connect the pop & lock wiring. If etrailer can research and edit their video for the new 2013 tacomas it will get a 5 star rating. 89797

After reading many reviews I went a head and ordered one of these for my new 2014 Tacoma. To my surprise the install went really easy. I took the advice of others and went ahead and installed it on the passenger side so that it unlocks only when you unlock all doors on the truck. Start to finish it took about 2-1/2 hours. I can be done quicker but I took my time just to avoid and mishaps. I am really happy with this investment. 142248

Review from a similar Pop and Lock Custom Power Tailgate Lock

Product arrived promptly. I followed some video instructions that I found with a simple google search and the installation was very straigtforward. I only have two caveats: 1) As others have noted, the splice connectors that are included for connecting to the existing wires are garbage and did not work. After fooling around with them for a while I gave up and used some proper in-line splice connectors (without the spades, they just crimp onto both the existing wire and the new wire). 2) The throw of the solenoid is just a little short, but fortunately in the right direction. What this means is that the tailgate gets locked reliably (the latch is thrown into the full lock direction), but when unlocking the mechanism doesn't *quite* make it all the way over. However it does go far enough that lifting the tailgate latch caused the locking mechanism to complete the travel, so from the outside you would never know it. Bottom line is that this was easy to install and now my tailgate latches properly with the rest of the door locks. I only wish I had installed this *before* getting a bunch of gear stolen out of the back of my truck! 116719

I installed this into a 2013 F350 with the backup camera and tailgate step. Installation when fairly smooth. I had to install a couple washers between the bracket and had to bend it just slightly to keep it from binding on the lock. The instructions have you running the harness down the drivers side. Do not do this. On my crew cab, long bed, I ran it down the passenger side and up through a body mount grommet behind the front right wheel. There I tapped in behind the fuse panel to the purple+gray stripe and gray+tan stripe wires. This allows the tailgate lock to operate with the second click on the remote, along with the passenger doors. All in all, it was a fairly easy install. even with having to get the mounting bracket positioned properly. I now don't have to remember to lock the tailgate with the key to prevent theft. 85716

good product and works well. Just be aware that the factory nuts may not work with the pop and lock bracket. Mine have a captive washer behind the nut and there is neither enough room side to side nor up and down to use the factory nut. I tried to simply trim the edge of the captive washer to make room, which worked out OK, but then I realized that the threads inside the factory nut do not start until about 2mm into the nut/washer assembly. Luckily I had a spare 6mm nut lying around and was able to complete without another trip to the hardware store. Be sure you have a 6mm nut or you may be stymied. 140497

Liked the concept when I saw this and watched the install video. It was more difficult to install than I had hoped. Took almost a day to get it in. I take most of the fault for that due to struggling getting things dis-assembled and re-assembled. Once in it works as advertised. Did notice one little challenge, if the doors are locked the tailgate is locked. Made it difficult to load without the keys. Small thing, overall very satisfied. 70463

Good product. A friend and I both got them and both of them had to use a couple washers under the mounting bracket to keep it from rubbing and causing it to not unlock. Otherwise I like it.
