Surco Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Review

Video Transcript for Surco Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Review

Today we are going to take a look at the 20 by 48 Surco cargo carrier for 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches, part number 52017. The Surco 20 by 48 has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. Remember you are also limited by the tongue weight capacity of your hitch and vehicle. The carrier is finished in a rust resistant powder coat and measures 20 by 48 inches inside the rails, across the platform. It is designed to fit both class I and class II 1-1/4 inch receiver hitches. The Surco carrier comes in three pieces and can be easily bolted together with a basic set of hand tools. There are two halves that make up our basket and they bolt together with a bolt here and another one on the front. On the underside, there us a shank, or spine, that bolts to the basket with three large bolts. 0:50

Installation is quick and easy. To install the carrier, just slide the shank into the receiver tube of the hitch, line up the holes and your pin and clip. The pin and clip is not included with this carrier. Around the perimeter of the basket are 5-1/2 inch tall rails. These rails will help keep your cargo centered and loaded properly on your cargo carrier. The base of the basket it made up of steel mesh welded to the frame. The mesh allows the cargo carrier to be light weight but still maintain strength to hold your cargo. Make sure that whatever you use to secure your cargo, like ratchet straps, bungee cords or cargo net, is anchored to the side rails. Do not anchor it to the mesh. When you load the cargo carrier, make sure the load is evenly balanced and the heaviest objects are towards the center where there is more structure on the basket. Today we will be using a set of ratchet straps to help us secure our cooler to the carrier. Now that we have our cargo secured to our basket, we will take it for a quick test drive and see how it does. And that is all for the 20 by 48 cargo carrier from Surco, part number 52017.

I received this cargo carrier for Christmas. Shipping was super fast. I can fit about three large storage containers side by side in this. It fits perfectly in the hitch I got from eTrailer. I can't wait to use this for camping!62485

The cargo carrier was received with no damage to the package. The contents were packaged well and the carrier was in perfect condition upon arrival. I liked that you use nylocks instead of a lock washer and nut for the bolts. It took less than 10 minutes to assemble it and put it on my car. It's only rated as Class 1 carrier but that's all my car is rated to use. I'm more than pleased with the product and will not hesitate to purchase anything I may need in the future from your fine company. Your website was easy to navigate and made my shopping experience a delight. 42549

I just received the trailer, only took 3 day via free shipping! I havent used it yet but the product is much heavier / ruggedly built than I thought. Assembly was very easy and fit correctly. Customer service provided order acceptance notice, shipment notice, and a delivery follow up with contact information - wow!36057

I felt that the service of this company was of the highest degree, thank you so very much for your help and timely assistance. The cargo carrier I received was well packaged and arrived a few days after the order. The frame and all points of welds appeared excellent, with the metal gauge being very thick and substantial. This is truely a well built-made in the USA product that appears to be suitable for years of use.28981

Everything was great about this experience. First off, eTrailer.com helped me research which products would work with my 1 - 1/4 " trailer hitch on my 2010 Subaru Outback. Once I made the purchase, the carrier was shipped to me very quickly. I used the product to haul a lot of firewood and a cooler on my recent camping trip. Assembly was a snap and it was light enough that I was able to install the carrier easily, with no assistance. I used the carrier with a Rola expandable cargo bag. Perfect combination!19476

Strong, light, just right! Excellent product for the price, really worked well for me. Only issue is if your receiver is recessed and your car is low to the ground it is tough to put the pin in. That's the only downside. The rails are easy to attach bungee cords/tie downs to and it provides about as much space as my back seat. Excellent, solid and looks good, too.1657

If you already have a hitch on the Jeep you can measure from the hitch pin hole out 6 1/4 inches to see where the edge of the 52017 carrier will start and if it is enough room. We do offer other carriers that have a longer shank and provide more distance between the hitch pin hole and the edge of the carrier. If

Any of the cargo carriers for the 2 inch receiver would work great with your Escalade. For your vehicle, I would recommend the Rola 23x56 Railed Cargo Carrier, part # 59502. In terms of safety it really depends on how well you secure the cargo on the carrier. As

  • Yes, the Surco Products 20x48 Cargo Carrier, # 52017, will work great on your 2011 Hyundai Tuscon, with 1-1/4 inch hitch. This carrier does not fold up, and because of the lower weight capacities of 1-1/4 inch hitches, none of the 1-1/4 inch cargo carriers that we carry, see link, are designed to fold. This is the case because the folding mechanism can create extra torque on the trailer hitch and vehicle frame, possibly causing damage. I would recommend adding an etrailer Cargo Carrier Li
