Hitch Mounted Wheel Chair and Scooter Carrier Review

Video Transcript for Hitch Mounted Wheel Chair and Scooter Carrier Review

Today we are going to show you part number SC500 from Rage Powersport Products. What this is is a hitch-mounted wheelchair carrier and scooter carrier. This cargo carrier can also be used for a variety of other things, aside from the original purpose. What is nice about this is it actually comes with a 5-foot-long ramp to easily roll up your wheelchair or scooter onto the carrier itself. It uses a hinged, bi-fold ramp design It can also double as a regular cargo carrier. It comes complete with built-in tie-down mounting points, and also included is an anti-rattle device. And one last thing about the ramp itself is it can actually fold completely flat into the platform when you are not using it. Now we will cover some more of these features in a little bit more detail.

One of the first features we will show you is the anti-rattle device. As you can see here, we have installed a typical 2-inch receiver hitch. It is not hooked up right now, but this is the part right here that makes it an anti-rattle. What this does is, when your carrier is plugged into the hitch and securely attached with the pin, this plate goes up here. And on the bottom are three screws. These three screws actually tighten up against the bottom edge of the hitch and pull the cargo carrier down and clamp it into one position, where it cannot go anywhere. And you tighten those three screws down with a 17-millimeter socket.

The next feature we are going to show you is that the whole carrier can actually tilt up when you are not carrying anything in it. So you will not have a carrier hanging out the back of your vehicle unnecessarily. This is the pin right here. Pull out the safety clip. You may need to pull a little bit of the tension off of it. Pull off the pin, push it back into position, and replace the pin. There you have it: when you are not using it, you do not have to have it hanging out for no apparent reason. Next, we will unfold the bi-fold ramp, which is the best part of this carrier. It has a neat little pin release here. Just pull up the pin and grab the handle and just pull it right up. And also you have got another pin back here that allows you to keep the door up in an upright position when you are carrying something inside of it and then hold it open still and unfold your ramp.

Now we will go ahead and demonstrate the ramp itself. We do not have a wheelchair or anything like that but we will actually use a lawnmower here and roll it up on here to give you a better idea of how much room it takes and how easy it is to do it. We have our lawnmower in place, properly centered over the cargo carrier. All we need to do now is just go ahead and tie it down. It has got plenty of hooks right here - four on each side to tie down your equipment. Same thing on the opposite side, as well as two on the non-ramp side of the carrier. One nice little detail on here is it has carrying handles built into it also. It also has a nice rubber lining in there a little easier on your fingers as you are taking the unit on and off of your vehicle. All right, and that covers it for part number SC500.

  • Power Wheelchair Carrier for a Class II, 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch on a 2011 Chevy Impala
  • It looks like all of the trailer hitches for a 2011 Chevy Impala are Class II trailer hitches. We have one carrier that could possibly work; the Trailer Hitch Mounted Scooter / Wheel Chair Carrier, # RHWC1114. The carrier weighs about 90 pounds and has a 230 pound capacity. If loaded to capacity, that would be 320 pounds which is within the capabilities of the hitch. You would need to consult the owners manual for the towing capacities of the car. The Rage carrier that you have referenced

  • Scooter Carrier for 2011 Subaru Forester with Class III Receiver
  • The Swing-Away Scooter Carrier you mentioned, part # SC500-AL105 is not a light item. It weighs approximately 130 lbs. I doubt you would be able to install or remove the carrier into the hitch by yourself. Before choosing and installing a mobility scooter carrier, you will need to determine the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle, which is typically 10 percent of the towing capacity. According to my research, a properly equipped Forester has a 2400 lb towing capacity which would mean a 240

  • Will the Rage PowerSport Scooter Carrier # SC500-AL105 Obstruct Taillights of 2011 Subaru Forester
  • The # SC500-AL105 Swing-Away Scooter Carrier should not extend any higher than the top of the bumper on your Forester. As you can see in the photo I edited for you, this leaves plenty of room so that the tail lights will not be obstructed by the carrier. Keep in mind that this is a carrier that has an integrated ramp, but it is not a lift. You will not need any additional lighting for your Forester.

  • Will the Rage PowerSport Swing-Away Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Fit a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • The Rage PowerSport carrier, # SC500-AL105, is designed to fit 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. Measure the receiver opening on your trailer hitch to determine if it is a 1-1/4 or 2 inch. If you need a 2 inch trailer hitch, the most popular option is # 87451. I have linked instructions and a video for you. You will also need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the distance required to clear the rear of the vehicle. If that distance is less than 10-1/4 inches and you have a

  • How to Carry a 300 Pound Mobility Scooter with a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • For your 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan you are going to need a Class III trailer hitch, like # 87717. This is a 2 inch hitch that has a 350 pound tongue weight capacity. However, all of the carriers weight 85 pounds or more so if you add the weight of the carrier to the 300 pound chair you would be exceeding that capacity. The safest option would be to use the hitch to tow a small trailer, # UWT1. This trailer was designed for motorized chairs/scooters and will offer easy loading/unloading and st

You will also want to ensure that the weight of the carrier, plus the weight of your snow blower, does not exceed the tongue weight capacity of your vehicle or trailer hitch. This carrier was designed to use with 2 inch Class III or Class IV trailer hitches and, again, the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch o

  • To determine if the Rage Swing-Away Scooter Carrier, part # SC500-AL150 will fit on your Tiguan, you will need to measure the distance to your bumper from your hitch pin hole (see diagram). When folded in the downward position, the distance from the hitch pin hole in the shank of the carrier to the closest portion of the carrier is 10-1/4 inches. When folded flat up against the vehicle in its storage position, the closest portion of the carrier is 8-5/8 inches from the hitch pin hole. If t

  • Will the Rage PowerSport Hitch Mounted Carrier # SC500-AL105 Fit on a 2005 Toyota 4Runner
  • You should have no problem mounting the Rage PowerSport Swing-Away Carrier, # SC500-AL105, on your 2005 Toyota 4Runner. This carrier was designed to fit 2 inch trailer hitches and has a weight capacity of 500 lbs. There are two important factors to consider when choosing a hitch mounted accessory. First, you will want to make sure the carrier will clear your bumper. This should not be an issue on your vehicle because the hitch is pretty close to the rear bumper and this carrier has many hitc

  • Folded up in its storage position the Rage Hitch-Mount Wheelchair Carrier for 2-inch Class III hitches, Part # SC500-AL105, will extend back from the center of the hitch receiver pin hole by 8-5/8 inches. I confirmed this with my contact at Rage. Unfolded in the down position the carrier provides 17-1/8 inches clearance to the hitch pin hole. You can determine if this carrier will clear your Wrangler spare tire by measuring from the center of the hitch pin hole back 8-5/8 inches. If the rear

  • Why is the Rage PowerSport Swing-Away Wheelchair Carrier not Recommended for 5th Wheel Trailers
  • The ride quality at the back of a fifth wheel trailer is considerably rougher than the ride at the rear of a passenger vehicle. This is due to the suspension differences between vehicles and trailers and the distance from the rear axle to the rear of the trailer. Trailers typically have a pretty large distance from the rear axle to the rear of the vehicle and this causes much more movement there. Similar to how sitting in the back of a school bus is much rougher than sitting near the front.
