Today we are going to take a look at the 20 by 48 cargo carrier from Draw-Tite, part number 6500. The carrier measures 20 inches by 48 inches and is designed to fit both Class I and Class II 1-1/4 inch hitches. It has a weight capacity of 300 pounds but you also need to keep in mind the tongue weight capacity of your hitch and vehicle. There is a series of six mounting holes on the backbone of our cargo basket. These mounting holes allow you to move the position of the shank so that you can adjust the clearance behind the rear of your vehicle. Now we are ready to mount it on our vehicle. 0:35
Installation is easy. Just fit the shank of the carrier inside your receiver hitch and install your pin and clip or locking hitch pin. With our carrier installed and the pin and clip in place, we are ready to load up and hit the road. When loading your cargo carrier, make sure your load is balanced evenly from left to right and your heaviest objects are towards the center. You can use things like a cargo net, ratchet straps or bungee cords to secure your load. Today we are going to be using a pair of ratchet straps to tighten our cooler down on our carrier. 1:25
The side rail along the base of our carrier is 3 inches tall. This lip will help our cargo stay contained within the carrier and keep it from sliding off. The floor of the carrier is made with a steel mesh. The steel mesh allows the carrier to be light yet strong at the same time. Make sure that you do not use the steel mesh as an anchor point. On the corners is reflective red tape that helps other drivers see the carrier behind your vehicle. Now let us take the car out for a drive and see how our carrier preforms. Rock Solid, welded... This is no cheap cargo rack that you bolt together, this thing is tough. Using it on my Honda fit for extended road trips, way cheaper then a roof rack set-up, and no wind drag sticking up, keeps a low center of gravity.2705

Even my wife said so. Prior to our family trip I purchased the following items for my 2004 Hyundai Tiburon: Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver #24726 20x48 Cargo Carrier Fits 1-1/4"" Trailer Hitch Receiver Hitch #6500 Rola Expandable Cargo Bag, 9.5 to 11.5 cubic feet #59102 Tiburons do not have a lot of cargo space, and mine has even less as I have 2 twelve inch subwoofers in an enclosure in the cargo area. I did the installation myself, which was easy, and the setup worked flawlessly. I was able to take luggage for two adults and two teens for a three day trip without stuffing items between the kids in the back seat and floor spaces. I could not even tell I had a cargo carrier on the back of the car. My fuel economy was not adversely affected because the carrier rides behind the car instead of on top where it would cause drag. I still had complete access to my rear cargo area via the lift back. This was one of the best purchases I have made, even my wife said so. 4837

This product #6500 works as advertised. I hauled 3 large bags of recycling today with a couple of bungy cords to hold them with no trouble. I also bought the #6955 rails...they are a great addition. This is a sturdy unit. Highly recommended. I would also recommend an anti-rattle hitch part of some sort..I am using the Boone #93347. It is a tight fit on a sport hitch, but it works.52777

My first impression of etrailer.com is stellar! I read a bunch of great reviews before deciding on this product for our summer vacation and I'm very happy I went with the crowd. This cargo basket is built very well. We also purchased the Rolo cargo bag, which fits perfectly within the basket. Both items were received within 3 days of my order- FREE. Pretty sweet deal This cargo carrier arrived within four days of my placing the order. Etrailer offered a) the best price I could find; b) no sales tax; c) free shipping (I ordered another product too). I received e-mail alerts from Etrailer every step of the way. You can't beat that .... Now to the cargo carrier itself. First, the good stuff: It appears to have been designed and constructed to withstand a nuclear attack. It isn't elegant -- one of the welds doesn't match up quite right -- but it's solid and stout. The paint seems to be applied well, but this is one of those things you can't know about until you've owned the product for a while. The shank engaged with my hitch snugly. In an initial test drive, I could not hear or detect any movement from the cargo carrier -- no creaks or bangs. The Rola bag I ordered for it fits perfectly. The design permits you to mount the carrier at varying distances from your vehicle and is clever and useful. OK, the not-so-good: The instructions that are in the PDF file on the Etrailer site talk about installing "corner marker" rods and brackets, but there are none in the package as received. Etrailer says that you must purchase a pin and clip separately, but the PDF instructions imply that they are included. In fact, mine arrived with a pin and clip, but they were too big to use (go figure ....). This doesn't matter, as I already have one. Somewhere between China and my house, the entire package had taken a hit so heavy that it had torn the angled shank right out of its corrugated cardboard container, so it was banging around loose when I came to open the package. The question is whether this happened on the journey from China to Etrailer, or from Etrailer to me. If it was the first of these alternatives, this implies that Etrailer didn't inspect the packet before it shipped it to me. But perhaps the US freight carrier did it .... Regardless, it didn't damage anything other than the little clip they provide for your dash to remind you that you have the cargo carrier in your hitch; the clip was destroyed beyond repair, but I wouldn't have used it anyway. Overall verdict: Very good value, and excellent service from Etrailer.5484

This thing rocks. Seriously, I've been filling it with rocks on my land and moving some heavy stuff with it. I've probably pushed the 300 pound limit. It's very sturdy, there are holes for the straps, and it's adjustable so the rack can be positioned at a proper distance from the vehicle. My last job was to move an old Snapper lawn mower from my land to my house so I could work on it. The cargo rack handled it fine. One last thing; I would definitely buy from eTrailer again. I own 95% of the PA system for my 9 piece band. I have a 09 VW Rabbit and needed some additional space for when I need to bring the entire PA (including an 18" powered sub woofer) for outdoor gigs. The carrier is well built, has multiple bolt holes to adjust the distance from the car. I was able to fit two 12" molded speakers, and two 10" floor monitors onto the carrier inside the Rola expandable cargo bag 59102. This shelf performed well on our recent 1,000 mile vacation with a 55 gallon tote fill of clothes strapped to it. It was sturdy and stable, no rattling or swaying. I like that I can adjust the tray front and back so it is not extended out too far but I can still get the hatch open. Only trouble was that the receiver part and the tray are separate pieces and in the shipping box the receiver part had come loose from its packaging and been banging around in the box. thankfully neither piece was marred significantly enough to send back.62217

Good- heavy duty construction Bad - Heavy duty construction. With a 200 lb max tongue weight for my vehicle, using 50 lbs of that up on a Cargo carrier doesn't leave me with too much capacity. It is also wobbly when you have something big on it. With a small snowblower on this, it is unnerving to see the whole carrier and snowblower rocking all over the place.60045

The cargo carrier arrived safe and sound. Opened it and had the carrier assembled and test fitted on my 2012 Nissan Juke in under ten minutes. I haven't hauled anything with it yet so I can't speak to that. What I will say is it was very easy to assemble. I love the goose necked hitch bar. Gives the carrier much better ground clearence. The ability to adjust the basket closer or further from one's bumper is a nice touch. All in all I'm very happy with my purchase.56423

Easy to place on the rear and secure to my new Subaru Forester hitch. Seems really sturdy with a little play side to side in the hitch. I think that will be better once loaded and balanced though. This is a very nice piece of hardware. Assembly and installation were easy. I wish it weren't quite so heavy, but with heavy construction comes strength (which means I won't be worrying about what's happening behind my bumper). I bought this rack partially because it has a step up, and now that I see it installed on the Prius I'm glad I did. I selected the cargo carrier with a focus on functionality first but appearance was included in my choice. I am using it on my Jetta and wanted the added clearance the raised bar offers. The Pro-Series has a clean look which I was willing to pay a little more for. It was delivered on schedule to my door. Assembly was simple, and I adjusted the carrier to be as close to my bumper as possible for optimum weight distribution, but that meant I need to lie on the ground to insert the pin and again on the other side to attach the clip to the pin. I might try giving a few inches clearance to the bumper to be able to access the pin and clip without lying down. The Carrier seems to be sturdier than the weight limits suggest in the instructions. I stood on it (215 lbs) and it seemed to be able to take more weight, although my car probably won’t like it. I noticed a change in the way my car responded with the trunk and cargo carrier fully loaded but not more than one would expect with a full load. Although the yellow reminder tag is “cheesy”, I used a similar sticky-note while driving in England to remind me what side of the road to drive on. Both are really effective and a nice additional benefit. The carrier has a noticeable wobble if the cargo is not balanced evenly (left-to-right) on the carrier (twisting around the insert bar) I tended to push/pull myself up by grabbing the edge of the carrier. When the load is balanced the carrier seems stable enough. The carrier is very easy to attach and unattach which means you can remove it for better access to the trunk with little effort. The carrier stores well enough, it stands up-right on its own on a level floor but it is very heavy and if it were bumped hard enough it could fall and cause some damage. For long-term storage I suggest removing the raised bar, and zip-tie the bar to the rack, to give a slimmer dimension and then hang the whole carrier so it won’t fall even I bumped I have two ideas for the carrier; one it is to have a threaded hole in the bar so it can be used with a threaded pin to tighten the bar to the receiver and reduce the wobble. I have a bike carrier with the same concept. Also the rear of the Carrier could be installed with a second receiver and I could use my bike rack and cargo carrier simultaneously. My only complaint is that the pro-series “sticker” was adhered “skewed” at the manufacturer. Not a problem is you tilt your head to read it. Over all- Very impressive cargo carrier, I recommend it to anyone.46609

Overall: I think the 6500 will work well and do what we want, within the limits of the towing hitch installed on the car. Positives: Ordered on the Saturday before Memorial Day; arrived the Thursday after. Plenty of communication after the order and fairly easy to track status. Appears very solid. Easy to put together (2 bolts!) although had I read the instructions first I would have known to put the hitch in the opposite direction for my Suburu Outback. Came with a hitch pin that I was not expecting. Glad I got the light kit- I think it is likely that the load will block at least some of the tail lights. Negatives: Tongue weight should not exceed 200#, and the 6500 weighs about 50. I knew this before ordering, so not a fault of the 6500. It would just be nice to have the sturdiness with a little less weight. I am not completely happy with the wobble where the hitch connects to the car. I will be using straps up to the roof rack, and assume that they will help keep the wobble down when in use. The straps might also extend the weight carrying capacity slightly.42547

I received the Hitch Hauler a few days after placing my order. I was very pleased with the excellent customer service as I'd changed my initial order one day after placing it and etrailer.com was very helpful. The Hitch Hauler quickly proved its worth as we'd ordered a new grill and didn't have a way to get it home until I attached the Hitch Hauler. Using a foam piece to protect the car and tie downs to secure the grill, the Hitch Hauler worked beautifully. In fact we ended up returning the grill because it had a problem, so the Hitch Hauler proved its worth four times in the first two days we had it. Installation took no time at all, longer to get out of box than to adjust and bolt up. Picked this one due to clearance. Top of carrier is even with top of car tag. At first setting, is 3 inched from bumper. Would give it a 5, yet wiggles a little much, (most 1-1/4" hitch accessories due) will use a bolt with washers/nut for snug fit.35811

I had purchased this Cargo Carrier along with a Draw-Tite Class I hitch receiver for my 2012 Mazda5. As you may already know, Mazda5 has a puny trunk space when all six passengers occupy the seats. Although I have a Yakima Rocket Box Pro 11 for skis and poles, still needed some storage area for boots and other items. Only way I can do all of the above is to store the bags on this cargo carrier. I chose this one because it's not too long (48" long) yet sturdy and it raises the platform somewhat as the Mazda5 have a rather a low ground clearance. Sure enough, this one's perfect and it seems very sturdy as well. Now I don't have to worry about long trips on the Mazda5 with the Cargo Carrier. Great product!32838

Loaded it wt a large plastic storage chest, put 2 suitcases inside industrial trash bag, and strapped it all down (making sure not to exceed weight limit). Drove 600 miles for Christmas Vacation. Quality seems very good and fits on our Forrester well. We wanted an elevated carrier and this does the job. The cargo bag seems great but we haven't used it yet. With a 200# tongue weight limit on our Forrester, we plan to keep out cargo at 100# plus the weight of the carrier.29068

Just got this today and put it together so I haven't used it yet but it looks great. I have a Mini Cooper Clubman with the Mini-Fini Club-link and hitch. It protrudes from the back of the car a lot more than a normal hitch, so the adjustability of this carrier is key. I was a bit worried from the pictures because the holes don't go all the way back but as I hoped is perfectly acceptable to rotate it 180 deg (the instructions explicitly say so). In the most forward position it's only an inch or so from the bumper which is exactly where it should be. The doors do clear the platform which is the other thing I was concerned about. It does kind of block the plate so I'll probably relocate it when I use it, but the tail lights are clear even with the cargo bag on. If you have a Clubman, I don't think you could hope for better. As a test, I stood on the platform and it seems very solid.25144

Product was exactly as advertised and arrived when promised. Quality is great, seems sturdy, and was very easy to assemble and use (attached to hitch on 2011 Kia Sportage). Also ordered the Cargo Carrier Stretch Net to go with it - probably wouldn't do that again - a few bungee cords would have worked just as well as I ended up adding them anyway as the stretch net did feel sturdy enough for my liking. Sturdy cargo carrier. Fit onto hitch easily as expected. Putting it together and install took about 15 minutes. It does weigh about 50 lbs so make sure the hitch can handle it plus the load. Mine is going on a Prius so I have to keep very light camping gear only on the carrier. Otherwise, it should work great for my plans.16674

The inner packaging could use some help as the bracket that was inside tore out of its cheap cardboard and was banging around in the carrier frame.There is an excessive amount of play in this unit which will result in up and down and side to side movement.I can only hope it will not result in any damage to the unit.12205

I got this to haul the ice chest and tent for camping trips. It looks like it will work perfectly. The hitch has a small riser on it to keep it from hitting on inclines and it's easy to adjust the position. I only wish it had a threaded draw-bar so I could really clamp it down and keep it from rattling. It's not the lightest thing in the world but it certainly is well built and solid. I would recommend this rack.11858

Excellent product. It slides into the hitch and that's it. Light but bulky cargo goes outside and camping trips are a breeze to pack for. The dogs like the extra room inside to stretch out. I am very happy with this rack.2558

Quailty product & perfect size I already owned a 60 inch wide carrier that I used with Ram pickup but found it to be a little wide for my Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Caliber. I bought this to use instead and it works great. Quality product that’s not too big and not too small. The ground clearance it provides is terrific for the Caliber. Also.. Etrailer is the best to buy from. I will continue to purchase from them for years to come. I'm working on my third order now. 2514

Class II carrier review The carrier is not as stable as I expected it to be. The tray-to-bracket fit is not tight rusulting in the tray wobbling. Also had to buy the anti-rattle bracket to attempt to stablize the carrier to hitch connection. Have not recieved the anti-rattle bracket yet so I do not know how effective it will be970

So far, so good. I haven't carried things around yet, but it was super easy to put together and light enough for me to get onto my hitch even being a petite woman not handy with tools. It appears pretty sturdy and fits Rubbermaid size large boxes very well. It does come with a pin, but I'm going to look for something that locks so no one tries to steal it if I am parked somewhere all day.25655

Good size cargo handler Used on my Honda Fit was limited to about 150 lbs od cargo since I have a class 1 hitch. Worked perfectly for the wheelchair and other bulky equipment I brought on the family vacation. Plenty of tie down holes and you can purchase optional lights as well as a tow hitch. It was the right size for the Honda Fit. 2663
