Video of Darby Extend-A-Truck Hitch Mounted Load Extender - Roof or Truck Bed

Today we're going to review part number DTA944. This is the Darby extended truck hitch mounted load extender for your roof or your truck bed. This part will mount to existing two inch trailer hitch receiver. The adjustable design of this will allow for use with different size vehicles. It extends for use with roof rack or a truck bed loads. This part is constructed of a heavy powder coated steel for durability,.
It installs and removes in seconds and it secures with a standard pin and clip. The top part here is 4 foot wide to support and secure the load. Again this does work on a two inch by two inch trailer hitch. I have an example here of it inserted into a two inch trailer hitch. It does have a 350 pound load capacity.
It does include the pins to secure the extend a truck. Another part that is included is this red safety flag to alert drivers of your extended load. Now I have it installed in for a roof load. Basically it will extend out from your hitch pin hole 9 1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole when used as a roof rack extension. The vertical adjustment, I have it at the lowest setting right now, which is 53 3/8 inches.
If you take the pin out and want to raise it the very top highest position would make it 60 3/8 inches. Now what Im also going to do is show you how to convert this for a truck bed load. Basically you can just take this top part and we'll sit this down and then you'll want to remove the pin and clip that holds it in. slide it out of the two inch receiver. Now you turn the long part and stick it in there.
Then we'll put the pin and clip back in. that's bringing it down to your truck bed height. Then you'll be able to insert this into the, for a truck bed. Now that will extend it out from your hitch pin hole 49 inches horizontally for hauling with your truck bed. It will also have the adjustments like we mentioned the other way. The lowest it would measure at 13 3/8 inches. The highest will be 20 3/8 inches for bed height. That should do it for review on part number DTA944.

Delivery was fast and the product is as expected. This is great for my short bed truck with a hard cover. I carry a large tool box in the bed and other materials; I can use this to pick up lumber without have to empty the bed. For really long pieces, I can use it in conjunction with the roof luggage carrier. I can use bed high or hard cover high. Excellent product. 242634

I received the load extender in the 3-day window promised (which I paid for) and it has the features that I think will work fine. The square tubing construction is substantial enough and fits my Class 3 trailer hitch nicely. I recently sold my 10 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee and replaced it with a smaller SUV with way better gas mileage and generally lower cost of ownership. But one big feature that I missed from the Jeep was the ability to slap small loads of lumber and sheet goods on the roof rack. My SUV's rack is too small. This extender effectively enlarges my carrying capacity and, while I have not yet used it due to a stretch of wet weather, I suspect it will only take a couple of minutes to mount and secure when needed. I think perhaps for the money a couple of tie-downs could have been included but overall this will do the job. 61661
Everything expected , lines up with Thule roof racks by about either 1" low or 1" higher this should be fine . I could re-drill but I don't think I will. 144273

Picked up my new 14' canoe in my short bed Ford 2002 F150 pick up using your newly purchased hitch attachment. Couldn't have worked better/easier/or faster. Canoe didn't budge and rode absolutely quiet. No rattling or bouncing. Happy I found your web site. 147865

The extendatruck hitch is a helpful piece of equipment - solidly constructed and very easy to install. Note you do need to guy it down to the truck with ropes when using in the top-carrier position or it will rattle like crazy - I would not want to be traveling anywhere unless the unit's crossbars were tied. That said, I used it to carry a heavy fishing kayak for 250 miles over a pickup bed to cushion the ropes/tie-downs against the truck lest you end up with rub-marks on your vehicle. Works awesome in the lay-down mode. very quick to tie a kayak down and launch in prepped position. 50672

Product came as described. Was quite dirty coming out of the box.Coat of dusty dust had to be cleaned up before use. Was fine after clean up. Red flag was included. Nice addition. 141037
Tori B Did a great job taking the order and the product worked great. I used it to support my rowing shell. Good Job, Tom 200938

My problem was how to transport securely my 16' kayak in the 6.5' bed of my Toyota Tundra. Tne Darby "Extend-A-Truck" concept appealed to me and since the price was very reasonable, it was Made in USA and shipping paid, I bought one and it has proven to be "just what I needed". My kayak loads easily, is safe when mounted (I taped a 4' length of foam pipe insulation over the Extend-A-Truck" crosspiece to protect the hull) and is very secure in transit. I am very glad I bought this product. 159075

The "Truck Extension" (mfgr's name for it) arrived today, in excellent condition. It's heavy - as it needs to be - & appears well-built. Both pins needed to use it were included, as shown in the product photo. It will be used on a F-150 Crew Cab (only a 5-1/2' bed) to haul longer lumber. The cross-bar is just enough over 10 feet out on my truck that I may drill another mount hole to move it in when needed. The welded loops on the cross-bar are spaced just about right to stabilize 4-foot wide sheets. A not-so-obvious nice feature: disassembled, the long bar slides inside the cross-bar, making it convenient to store and to haul when not in use. 268319
The 4ft extension is .100" thick and the "T" piece is .080". The extension slides into the "T" for easy storage. Hitch extensions in general probably should angle up from the hitch to the "T" for more clearance. Since I only need a 2ft. extension for hauling a kayak, I will shorten mine and drill two new holes for the hitch pin. Overall, it's a quality design. With a piece of plywood on it, the extension could double as a work table. 282652

Wonderful product. Very good price. Wobbles a bit where in receiver. But I can fix that 137957

Using this product is a lot easier than putting the Kayak on top of the car. I covered the bars with pipe insulation so the Kayak would not get scratched. It carries two Kayaks great. I use it with my Yukon. Once the Kayaks are in the vehicle, I pull the door down and tie it. It takes very little time to set up. I have a trailer, but there are some places we go that won't allow trailers, so this is the perfect solution. It is also the perfect solution if you just want to throw one Kayak in and go. Once unloaded, I just break it down and put it in the vehicle. I am completely satisfied. 236698

Works great to carry my 16' canoe in my Dodge pickup. 194611
by: Jerry S.06/03/2014
Wish the fit was more snug where it goes into the hitch. It is certainly strong enough for all I want to do just a little wobbly. Would be good to have several holes for the pins where it attaches to the hitch this would probably make it more stable if it had more settings to allow it to go further into the hitch. I may drill another hole myself. Heavy duty is what I'd call it without the pretentious price of Thule and other high priced racks. Meets my needs and exceeded my expectations! Highly recommend this product! Thanks! - Jerry 134130

I have been looking for a way to transport a canoe that I recently obtained. My truck has a shell on the bed and wind deflectors around the cab side windows which makes it difficult in working out a way to carry the canoe. This eliminates any traditional hard mounts. I put a receiver hitch on the truck to use the Extend-A-Truck rack for the rear support. Utilizing canoe foam blocks on the cab and appropriate tiedowns as well as other supports, this arrangement should work fine. Just waiting for the time to use it. 144831

The Darby Extend a Truck comes just as advertised and is perfect for my kayak and surfboards. The hitch mount is a little loose, but tying it down well is no problem. etrailer customer service is excellent and they ship fast. The same item can be found at a lower price however. 12433

I had originally purchased the cargo carrier to haul my two 12.5 ft kayaks, which it does very well. However, I find myself using the carrier far more often for home and garden projects. Its ideal for hauling long lumber with short bed pickup trucks. Awesome product. 305124
The rack fulfilled all expectations, was concerned about how it might affect vehicle stability, HANDLED GREAT !! I would suggest that the manufacturer add 2 more tie down eyes to the longer extention section, for convenience. Again, very satisfied. 296270

I used my load extender yesterday and it worked GREAT.. Very easy to install (using the 2 pins included).. The material is nice and heavy so I wasn't worried about the weight of the load, and I could still raise the tanneau cover and get to the tools in the bed of my truck, even with the ladder still in the rack.. I'm sure I'll be using the rack alot more now that I have it... Great product for the price and I would highly recommend it.. 109182

I recently bought a small SUV after my pick up truck stopped running. I needed a way to haul small quantities of 2X4 Lumber, and 4X8 sheet material on top of my roof rack. This roof extender seems to be the perfect hitch accessory available at the right price!. I got free shipping when I bought a few more accessory items. Everything was delivered quickly and appears to be constructed well. Overall a great value. Thanks! 8691

I received my "T-bar" as a Christmas present 4 years ago and have used it dozens of times since to haul canoes with. It was, without a doubt, one of the most useful gifts I have ever gotten! So much so that I gave my son-in-law one for his first Christmas gift from me and am purchasing another one to give as a birthday present to the person who gave me mine. Can't think of a better way to say thank you than that! 13881

Great product and easy to use - installs in a few minutes. Only two pieces to the rack so I can store it out of the way under the back seat of my truck when not in use. I would recommend getting the pad that is custom made to go with the rack to keep your canoe or kayak cushioned when on the rack. The width of the rack allows you to fit two kayaks side by side which was a big plus for me. 151961
Great extender but take note I bought this to use with a canoe in the bed. It works great for that - strong, easy to load, I love it for what it does. Very worth the money. One thing to note about the description, though, is that the L piece does NOT fit in the cab of my truck. It's too long to fit behind the seat in my 2008 Tacoma Access cab. Other than that I love the thing. 3071

Not too sure if this is going to work. I have a 24 ft. rowing shell so the rack will not work when the boat is in the bed of the truck but should be OK with the boat on the roof. It's Spring and I have to unwrap the boat and try out the rack. If the rowing shell is too long I know it will be perfect for my Kayack Either way, the rack is made very well 74914

I have not used it yet but I did hook it up to my Honda ridgeline .It seems well made and fits well into my factory 2" receiver . I did add reflective tape to cross bar and tape to show me where to stop so pin hole lines up near bumper. I will send pictures of it with my 16' Gloucester light dory on it when the weather breaks. Thanks John 122122

As I was opening my hitch extender my son-in-law reminded me of his birth date, and then said he knew what he was getting his dad for his next birthday or Christmas. I'm building a permanent canoe cover, and the guys at the lumber yard were amazed everything I needed fit on the extender and how easy it was to tie down. Roof tin, 4 4x4s and all the lumber. 168951

Delivered quickly and the product was as expected. Hauled a bed of 16' lumber as well electric conduit thus far. The "tail" could be a little tighter in the hitch. The "flag" is just a plastic sheet which didn't survive the first trip. No big deal but,I suggest you eliminate it from the package. I will shop etrailer.com again for my future needs. 158474

Ordered the Darby Extend-A-Truck hitch to haul a 12' kayak. I was impressed with the quality of craftsmanship, ease of use, and functionality. This worked well with my 2009 Toyota Tacoma Short Bed and enabled the kayak to be placed flat on the bed and hitch extension. It is very sturdy and has tie-down attachments which kept the cargo secure. 285247

Great product, I have a short bed pickup and this lets me carry long items 12' plus easily. The service was excellent, when orders exceeded inventory they were on e-mail immediately and let me know, I was willing to wait and they accommodated. The delivery came inside of two weeks anyway, a nice company, with good outreach folks. 243286

This is exactly what I was looking for and I thought the price was very reasonable. Zach, who I first talked to was very helpful and once I described what I wanted was able to search and locate what I wanted in short order. I also received my order sooner than I thought I would. I'm very satisfied. 308255

Seems to be a good product, minimal sway when anchored as suggested. Does the job as a rear kayak mounting point. The only note is that it will not fit a Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited without airing down or removing the spare. If the pin location was 1/2 inch farther back it would work perfectly. 122061
Excellent! Use it to haul my canoe in the bed of my truck. It is a struggle to put a canoe on the roof, but a piece of cake to put it in the bed. Etrailer is fantastic; great customer service, returns are easy, they deliver fast and they answer the phone. Why would you buy anywhere else? 264758

just what I needed. arrived in 3 days. very easy to use on Colorado. 282206
So far so good...haven't really gotten to 'use' other than trial run but easy to use and sturdy and even came with cotter pins. Will share pictures once I have it loaded with my gear (using as standup paddleboard rack in conjunction with cargo control bar-too easy!). 46701

Well made and well designed product that solved my problem of carrying my 17' canoe with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma with a 7' bed! This thing rocks! Easy to set up, attach securely, and store when not needed. I am happy! 138211
A little loose/wobbly but to be expected.. Works well as intended purpose with no issues. Great for extending the bed or raising a support up for Kayaks in concert with roof racks. Good product for the price. 250775

Just received Extend-A-Hitch. Out of the box everything needed was there, easily installed, and well made. I consider this a great purchase and recommend this product to anyone who needs to haul longer items. 134011
Works hard and held up well after occasional usages during the year. Strong and the top Tue points are useful for both load tie down and bar stabilized strap too. Buy it and you'll not be disappointed. 248770

Came quickly, good packaging. Haven't opened the box as of yet, though should be great for putting those extra long pieces of molding and lumber that will not fit inside my Expedition El on the roof rack. 243888

the Extend-A-Truck Load Extender worked perfectly for my 16" canoe and truck's 5 1/2 foot short bed. The foam kayak block is a must. Your fast service and shipping is very impressive! 59476
Worked like a charm for me. I have a Frontier with the short bed so I needed something to give me a bit more stability so I could safely haul my kayak. This item did the trick. 196465
