Video Transcript for Curt Folding Aluminum Cargo Carrier Review

Today we're going to review part number C18100 from Curt. This is their aluminum cargo carrier for 2" receiver hitches. I'll go ahead and cover some of the features of this cargo carrier. First off, it is designed to fit 2X2 trailer hitch receivers only. This cargo carrier does not come with the hitch and pin. Those are sold separately.

This also folds up when not in use, so you have room in your garage, or at the back of your vehicle. With the cargo carrier constructed from aluminum, it allows more weight left over for carrying capacity. This capacity of this cargo carrier is 500lbs, or the tongue limit of your hitch. This cargo carrier is easy to assemble using basic hand tools. I'll go ahead and cover the actual inside dimensions of the cargo carrier. Measuring on the inside at the very bottom, we have a distance of 60" across, 19"wide, and 2-3/4" tall.

We'll get one final measurement from the hitch pin to the outside edge of the cargo carrier to give you an idea of how much length is at the back of the vehicle, and that measurement will be about 30". You can also see along the edge of the rails of the cargo carrier, you see these circles. Those are intended for tie-down points. The smaller holes towards the outside edge are there in case you want to add some additional lights. It also has a provision for a license plate if you want to bolt it to the back.

One thing to remember when you tie down your cargo on all cargo carriers, do not attach to the expanded metal at the bottom. It's just not as strong as the sides are. With that, that will finish it for our review of part number C18100 from Curt. .

Great product once assembly is complete. Very light weight. I can easily lift the entire carrier with one arm. I'm not sure how it will hold 500lbs though because it feel so light...but Curt says it does so I will give it a try in a few weeks. The carrier wobbles just a little bit in the receiver but not enough to cause any concern or disappointment with the overall product. Two negatives though: 1. Assembly was easy but the instructions were completely crappy. If your not able to read a picture or have trouble following vague directions you may take a little longer to get this thing put together. 2. I can not fold the carrier all the way up. It hits my bumper. I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and need about 1/4 inch more clearance to get the carrier up and in the locked position. I will have to buy an extender to use this feature. As with other stuff from etrailer, it came fast. There werent any holes in the box (unlike my trailer hitch) and the product was in great shape. Good customer service and the carrier got here a day earlier than scheduled. 28155

Did just fine with about 300 lbs and I imagine that up to the weight limit it will perform the same.

The cargo carrier is great! I used it all last year for my art shows, putting on it what didnt fit in the vehicle. The only comment would be some of the edges on the mesh used is extremely sharp, so i had to get a piece of indooroutdoor rug and put over the whole carrier so it would not rip my carrier bag. I like the weight, easy for me to put on by myself. First time a company has ever checked on their products a year after! Thanks! I will certainly contact you if I have other needs! Jan

Quick and Easy to Assemble Always wear hand protection, when assembling this cargo carrier. One slip of my socket wrench caused me to slice two of my fingers, on the very sharp, aluminum mesh bottom, of the carrier, and sent me to the emergency room for two stitches in my right pinky, and three in my ring finger. All in all, the carrier was very easy to put together, and the only negative that I experienced with it so far, is that the receiver end wobbles, when mounted into the bumper 2x2" square hole. I need to make some sort of shim, to eliminate this problem. Otherwise, this cargo carrier is very well made and particularly light-weight and easy to handle, yet very sturdy. It would be very nice if reflective red safety tape had been provided for the carrier, for improved night driving visibility of the carrier. I suggest that a safety statement, recommending the use of gloves, be mentioned in the assembly instructions and that the mesh floor, of the carrier, is razor sharp, so be careful, during assembly. All in all, I really like this aluminum cargo carrier..... 3265

I just did 800 miles with this cargo carrier and had no problem, but make sure you purchase the anti rattle pin because it has some play in the hitch. 167460

I ordered this platform for my CX-7 along with a 2" Hidden Hitch. I received my entire order a day early and everything was in good order. As for the aluminum platform...easy to assemble and lightweight. When it's mounted on the car and folded-up, it just barely misses touching the bumper. The weak link in this is the main hinge-pivot bolt. Once removed, the rest of the platform could be easily stolen from the back of the vehicle. I'm going to order a second locking pin to make it more secure. Another issue is the proximity of the tailpipes to the platform when it is in either position. I plan to install some sheet metal deflectors to direct the exhaust towards the ground. Ultimately, it took about 30 minutes to assemble, installed easily on the CX-7, fits excellent and it looks great. It doesn't stick out too far and doesn't cover the license plate or taillights when folded up. 202967

Works fine. Easy to assemble, no issues at all, took about 45 minutes. Been using it weekly or more for over a month. I use it for hauling garbage to the dump and carrying jerrycans of gas outside the vehicle. Only concern is that it's a bit flimsy--the platform flexes and the sides bend a bit more than I like when I ratchet down the straps to hold on the cargo, but that's aluminum for you. It takes the 100+ lbs I carry, but I'm skeptical about the 500 lb rating. Little nervous about loading my snowblower on to it. Lightweight, easy easy to install and remove, stores easily in the garage. Folds up nicely against the back of my 4Runner, though it does obscure the licence plate about 1/2 way. Police don't seem too concerned--so far. I purchased also anti-rattle hitch pin--highly recommended. Without this, the carrier shakes a lot from side to side. Would I buy this again?--oh yeah. 176337

The assembly is a little challenging and the instructions are cumbersome. Also, seems like the bar going into the hitch is loose. All in all for the price it is a decent cargo carrier. I bought reflective tape and a hitch pin lock, to insure safety. Would be nice to have these available through this site. 95387

A great basket for the price. Consider adding reflective tape, as well as adding a hitch tightener to prevent the basket from swaying side to side. Here are my photos 56733

Will be using this rack to carry luggage on our vacation in June. We have given it a trial run around town and think it will work very well. It was easy to put together, but needs elements to make it more stable. It tips left and right more than I like, and it is too loose in the receiver. I would rather have the design and parts correct rather than having to find fixes after the fact. However, it will do the job, is light enough for my wife to put it on our car when necessary, and gear ties down well. Be careful of the fold up feature, we can not tip our rack up as it hits the car. It is too close. I should have asked how to determine this prior to ordering. 132299

Received the rack just 3 days after ordering! It was very easy to assemble. I really like that the rack is so light and easy to handle since I will be putting it on and taking it off frequently. I also like the folding mechanism which is easy to use. After putting the rack together and putting it on my car I loaded it up with a lawn mower, gas can, and line trimmer. It all fit with no problem. Of course, the lawn mower was a little wider than the rack, but that really wasn't an issue. Used the stretch net (part # 7330) to secure everything. I am very pleased with the products and the service from etrailer.com. 10837

The carrier is just as stated on the site. One major problem is that it is stated to be for a 2 inch hitch. I have a 2 inch Reese hitch and when you slide this into the hitch sleeve it does not fit snug, this allows your carrier to move over 2 inches on either side allowing everything to shift that is placed onto the carrier platform. Even with things strapped down you still have to add extra stability to prevent the carrier from moving up and down on each side. I have had to add straps from the carrier to the roof rack of my van to drive safely without feeling like things are shifting. 180098

The rack was easy enough to put together and is light enough for my wife to handle. I was hoping to use it to carry a motorcycle as it is rated at 500lbs and has holes to attach tie-downs. It seem a bit flimsy for this. For added security I would probably utilize some type of solid bottom say for tires to spread their load more evenly. For hauling bicycles or luggage I think it will work great. I really like that it can fold up when not being used, though it doesn't have any anti-rattle additions I can't say as we haven't actually used it yet. 30748

I just put my carrier together, It felt a little lighter than I expected but if it holds 500 lbs that will be more then I need. The only thing I don't care for is the receiver is very loose in the hitch. you can move the carrier up and down ( at the back ) about two inches. I saw this on another review. it is like the carrier shaft is quite a bit smaller then the hitch it goes in, I have 2 inch hitch, rattles when driving up a bumpy road, will need to slip some thin shims in to take up space. I find all of this minor, Like the carrier. 49448

Fasteners and brackets well designed for use. Product well finished and delivery was prompt. 1" wrench - socket / open / box end needed for assembly which is not usually a part of a consumer tool set. This sent me searching but the directions and product is top grade. I am glad the self-locking nuts were used rather than lock washers. Would recommend seating the M10*83 Carriage Bold before tightening the M10*20. I plan to use the carrier for hauling a generator and or auxiliary black water tank for primitive camping. 7426

I purchased this item due to its lighter carry weight as I will store it in an attic when not in use. Reasonably light considering the capacity. When I inventoried the fasteners included for assembly against the instruction sheet, the quantities appeared short. I decided to assemble what I could and then contact the company with what was missing. It all worked out and seems the instructions are for multiple models of similar design. Unit is stout and well made. Assembly was easy over a large cup of coffee. 86425

Cargo carrier arrived promptly, and with great customer service support via email. Not hard to put together, but the instructions could have been clearer. Surprisingly light, but seems sturdy enough, however, it hasn't been used yet. I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough clearance between the vehicle and the edge when folded, but this doesn't seem to be an issue. I bought some reflective tape for the corners to enhance safety. An overall sound investment that I expect to get many years of use from. 50081

Couldn't be more pleased. prompt delivery, product as described, I had it on the back of my Highlander within an hour. The enclosed instructions aren;t extremely detailed and I used the picture more than the printed word. One word of advice for other infrequent tool handlers- Really, Really don't tighten the connections completely until all of the nuts and bolts are in place. I went back and forth a few times because I ignored this in the instructions. 114287

So far so good, the direction were fine and it went together rather well. I will be putting it to the test in a week, I can't see any problems. What I really like to review is the service,it is excellent, all questions were answered and the service was outstanding. The package came on time and not damaged. Etrailer does care about the customer, and they show it on all fronts. Thank you for the help, 123195

Great so far. Lightweight, assembled easily, and I love the use of locknuts for durable assembly. But there was an error in the assembly sheet: The 8 short bolts holding the 2 halves of the rack together are shown with the heads on the outside and the sharp bolt ends inside the cargo area. The pic on the box was correct. the rest of the instructions were difficult to understand; more pix would help. 72774

We chose this cargo carrier due to its ability to carry 500 lbs. and the fact that it is lightweight. We intend to put it on our camper van. I was very impressed with the speed and quality of service and follow-up provided by trailer. I would definitely purchase from them again. They have quality products at competitive prices. 171729

Great product. It is lightweight, but strong. The included rotation mount to turn up 90 deg is great. My previous one, I had to use an additional product to turn it up. It weighed as much as this whole unit. I added reflectors and reflective tape on it. The predrilled holes for tie downs are great. So far, I love this product. 89510

Product is a Great Buy and well suited for my purpose too. Assembly instructions were a little out of whack but, I was ale to look at the pictures and do the total assembly prior to tightening all the bolts and nuts. It's ability to carry 500 lbs. and yet be so light to install on the vehicle is absolutely phenominal. 31639

Does not fold up on my 2013 Subaru Outback. I did not pay attention to the distance from center of hitch pin hole to closest edge of carrier when carrier is folded up . It has a Hidden Hitch Class III 2" #87568. I will probably use it, just never fold it up. 125920

The cargo carrier was what I was looking for. Light weight for ease of installing on vehicle. The only issue was the pivot bolt for fold up feature was 1/2" to short, needs to be 3-1/2" long. The 7683 receiver lock works good. 9531

  • Aluminum vs. Steel Cargo Carrier are there Any Disadvantages for Aluminum Construction
  • You are correct there is a weight advantage for aluminum, item # C18100, over steel, item # CC-100, but the biggest reason aluminum is considered over steel, for most of our customers, is corrosion resistance and appearance. You do not need to upkeep the carrier with spray paint every couple of years with aluminum like you do steel. As far as disadvantages, there really are none. As long as the weight capacity of the aluminum carrier is rated the same as the steel carrier they will both...

  • Raising a Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Out of Exhaust Path on a Buick Enclave
  • On any vehicle that has exhaust that exits straight out the back and not out the side or towards the ground could potentially damage a trailer hitch mounted item and its contents. I believe I have a great solution for you though. To get enough distance from the exhaust you can use multipurpose ball mount # D210 and that will get you plenty far from the exhaust. For a carrier, if using the multipurpose ball mount, you can use any carrier that fits a 2 inch receiver. The receiver portion...

  • Recommendation for Largest Aluminum Folding Cargo Carrier and Waterproof Bag
  • Thanks! We work very hard to keep a killer website and I'm glad that you found it helpful. The 19x60 Curt Cargo Carrier, # C18100, is a great option. This carrier is constructed of durable aluminum making it light weight and rustproof. For added convenience, this carrier folds up and out of the way when not in use. I recommend that you take a couple measurements on your 2012 BMX X5 to make sure that the carrier will clear the rear bumper when using the folding feature. Measure from...

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a Class C Itasca Navion 25k Motorhome
  • I would recommend you get either a 20x60 Railed Cargo Carrier, part # C18150, or for a little more money you could get the very lightweight Curt 20x60 Folding, Aluminum Cargo Carrier, part # C18100. The Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier, part # C18145, you referenced is not designed to handle the harsher ride at the rear of motorhomes and I would not recommend you purchase it. You may also be interested in a Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # 7683, as a theft deterrent. I attached a review...

  • Recommendation For Cargo Net To Use on the Curt 20 x 60 Folding, Aluminum Cargo Carrier, # C18100
  • For a cargo net on your Curt 20 x 60 Folding, Aluminum Cargo Carrier, part # C18100, I would recommend the Cargo Net, part # C18202, or the Thule Cargo Net, part # TH692. Both of these cargo nets would work fine on your Curt cargo carrier. I am including a link to a video review on the Thule cargo net.

  • Recommended Lightweight Cargo Carrier for 2014 Ford Flex
  • We offer two different lightweight aluminum cargo carriers, the Curt folding 19x60 inch model, part # C18100 or the 20x47 inch MaxxTow you referenced, part # MT70108. Both carriers weigh just under 30 lbs and are the lightest cargo carriers we offer. Either carrier would be compatible with your Flex, but since you mentioned that you were more interested in a 60 inch wide carrier, the Curt model might be your best bet. Since the C18100 is rather long, it is important that when the carrier...

  • What Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2013 Chevrolet Equinox for Use With a Cargo Carrier
  • Your 2013 Chevrolet Equinox can be equipped with two different sizes of trailer hitch receiver, either a 1-1/4-inch or a 2-inch. Since loaded coolers can be fairly heavy I will suggest you go with a 2-inch hitch to give you the maximum carrying capacity for your coolers and other tailgating essentials. We offer the Hidden Hitch # 87572, which has a 350-lb tongue weight rating. This will be more than adequate for the weight of a cargo carrier plus your coolers and other gear. This bolt-on...

  • Folding Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • When this Curt 20x60 Folding, Aluminum Cargo Carrier # C18100 is folded up it measures 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest edge of the carrier. If you need more clearance than that you would want a Draw-Tite Hitch Cargo Carrier # 6502. This carrier has 7-1/2 inches of clearance when folded up. I attached a review video for this product for you to check out as well as installation instructions.

  • Aluminum Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier for a 2002 Toyota Sequoia with 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • We have a couple of aluminum trailer hitch mount cargo carriers that will both fit your 2002 Toyota Sequoia with the 2 inch trailer hitch. First, the Curt carrier you have referenced # C18100 is a fit. This carrier can fold up and when in the folded up position it will be 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest edge of the carrier. To make sure it will fit when folded just measure from the center of your hitch pin hole straight back to the distance required to...

  • Would the Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18100 Fit a 2013 Honda Pilot
  • In order to determine if the Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18100 will clear your rear bumper when installed you will need to take one simple measurement. You will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the furthest point out on the rear bumper. If that distance is less than 6 inches this carrier will fit and work well. Check out the review video I attached that shows this carrier being demoed on a similar Pilot as yours as well as the help article I attached that shows...

  • The Curt 20x60 Folding, Aluminum Cargo Carrier, # C18100, has 5 inches of clearance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier when folded up and this carrier is 21 inches tall from the top of the receiver opening to the tallest part of the carrier when folded up. • Will Curt Aluminum Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Fit when Folded Up on a 2010 Buick Enclave
  • The Curt trailer hitch mount cargo carrier, # C18100, will fit in a 2 inch receiver. It measures 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier when folded up. To determine fit, first make sure you have a 2 inch receiver opening. Then measure from the center of the hitch pin hole straight back to the distance required to clear the rear of the vehicle. If the measurement is less then 5 inches, the carrier will fit when folded. On hitches that we have...

The aluminum folding cargo carrier we offer is the Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C18100. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the carrier when folded up is 5 inches. • Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2008 Honda Pilot

It measures 12-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier. And the most popular folding carrier for 2008 Honda Pilot owners is Curt cargo carrier # C18100. • Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier and Anti-Rattle Device for a 2006 Jeep Commander
  • Provided that your 2006 Jeep Commander has a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver, I would go with the Aluminum carrier, # C18100, because it is much more corrosion resistant, it is lighter weight, and requires less maintenance over time when compared to steel. For a bag, I would go with # 59102. You might need to tuck it in a little front to back but it would be a good fit. You are correct about exhaust heat. It can be an issue no matter what the carrier is made of. Make sure there is adequate...

  • Recommended Folding Cargo Carriers for 2003 Honda Pilot
  • To determine the fit of a cargo carrier on your Pilot, two dimension need to be known. You will need to measure the distance between the hitch pin hole in your receiver hitch and the furthest rearward point of your back bumper. The shank of the cargo carrier you choose will need to be longer than the hitch pin hole to rear of the bumper measurement. When we installed a Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch or Curt hitch on a 2003 Pilot, we found that the hitch pin hole to end of bumper measurement...

  • How to Make a Tail Light Kit for the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18100
  • I may have a few parts that you can piece together to install tail lights on the Curt Cargo Carrier, # C18100, but Curt does not offer a tail light kit that will fit this carrier. If you are interested in the slim LED lights, you could install two of the Optronics Sealed LED Thin Line Lights, # STL69RCB, on each side of the carrier. You could route the wires through the existing hole and would only have to drill the holes for the mounting screws. Once you have the lights mounted,...

I have included a link to all of the hitch mounted cargo carriers we have that fit 2 inch trailer hitches and have a ramp. The Brophy Hitch Cargo Carrier, # MSCR, has a fold down ramp and the deck sets right on top of the straight shank so there is no rise to worry about when placing items in the carrier.

  • Recommended Folding Cargo Carrier Options for 2004 Toyota Sienna
  • The decision to go with a standard or folding carrier is a matter of personal preference. Being able to fold the carrier upwards by 90 degrees against the rear of the vehicle is a convenient feature for when the carrier is not being used, but you do not want to remove it. The only down side is that the folding mechanism takes up some space on the shank, which means that the hitch pin hole on your receiver needs to be pretty close to the rear of the bumper in order to fold. One of our...

  • Can a Bike Rack Adapter be Installed on Curt Aluminum Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carriers
  • Technically, you could mount the Bike Rack Adapter # CC-125 on the Curt trailer hitch mount cargo carrier, # C18100. But I do not recommend it for a couple of reasons. First, the two parts have not been tested together and performance is unknown. Second the adapter is steel and the carrier is aluminum. Dissimilar metals can have adverse effects on each other not to mention the stronger steel could damage the aluminum. Ideally you would use the adapter with its matching cargo carrier,...

  • Folding Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2011 Hyundai Tucson
  • There are some measurements you will need to take to determine if the Curt cargo carrier, # C18131, will fit when folded up on your 2011 Hyundai Tucson. First, measure from the center of the hitch pin hole straight back to the distance required to clear the rear of the vehicle. On Curt cargo carrier # C18100, it measures only 5 inches from hitch pin hole to the rails when folded up so it may not be the best option. I do not recommend using an extension because doing so will reduce the...

  • Recommended Cargo Bag for Curt # C18100 Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
  • The best way to protect your luggage from rain and snow would be to use a cargo bag, like part # 59102. The bag is perfectly sized to fit your Curt # C18100 cargo carrier. The bag is expandable from 9.5 to 11.5 cubic feet of storage space, and is rainproof unless you find yourself in a torrential downpour. This is why we recommend wrapping anything you carry in the bag that can't get wet in plastic. Although the bag is designed for a railed carrier, you could use the struts under the cargo...
