Video Transcript for Thule Doubletrack Hitch Bike Rack Review

Today were going to review the the Thule Doubletrack platform style bike carrier part number TH990XT. The Doubletrack is designed to work with both 1 -inch and 2-inch trailer hitches. Theres an adapter sleeve that youll need to use for 2-inch trailer hitches but it can be easily removed using one Allen bolt to adapt to 1 -inch hitches. Its high strength steel construction will support weight capacity of 70lbs and will carry a total of two bikes and will accommodate bicycles that goes with wheels and tires up to 3 inches wide and bikes with wheel bases up to 46 inches. Its built in the USA and Thule covers with a limited lifetime warranty. Included with the rack is Thules snug tight lock system.

Its an anti-rattle bolt that will thread into the shank of the carrier to take out any rattle between the carrier and the hitch. That bolt can be secured with Thule snug tight lock on the other side. Included with the bike rack are two of the one Thule key lock system cores. Well use one for our anti-rattle bolt and the other one youll use on the top ratcheting hook of our bike carrier. These two locks allow us to secure the bike rack to the vehicle and the bikes to the carrier.

The bike carrier can be folded flat against the vehicle. That way, you can maintain a shorter profile so you can still fit your vehicle in the garage even with the bike carrier mounted to it. You can then fold the bike carrier down flat and fold up the upright mast in order to load and carry your bikes. For each bike, you have a padded ratcheting frame hook that will hold the bike by its cross tube on the top of the frame. Each wheel cradle has a wheel strap so that both the front and the rear wheel of the bicycle are secure. Now well go ahead and show you how to mount it into the vehicle and mount a bicycle.

Well insert the shank into the receiver tube of our hitch and line up our hitch pinholes. Well then thread our snug tight lock bolt and tighten it down using a wrench then well secure the bolt with the lock on the other side. Now we can fold our bike rack down in order to our bike. Well use the hitch switch at the base of the carrier to lay it down flat. Then well use the slide release here at the base of the upright mast in order to tilt it up.

Well extend ratcheting frame hooks out and open our wheel straps. Well fit our bike in and secure it first by the frame using that ratcheting hook and then well come back and secure the front and rear wheels with the wheel straps. Thats it; our bike is all loaded up. Now were going to take it for a quick test drive to see how it does. Thats it for our review of the Thule Doubletrack platform style bike carrier part number TH990XT. .

Ford Ranger

I purchased this rack from etrailer.com at the beginning of June and didn't want to write a review until we had put this through some real world use. Very pleased with etrailer.com as they did a really super job shipping it out next day plus the free shipping. They got it right out the door, not like some places where you get put on the bottom of the shipping list if you choose the free shipping option and wait two or three days for shipping to happen. So I give etrailer 5 stars for their end of things! Thanks guys. About the rack itself. Assembly instructions were simple and good, typical of what you would find with IKEA furniture. Some of the smaller items were already assembled at the factory even though the instructions indicate you need to put them together so don't go crazy looking for bits and pieces that are not in the bag. Just note that they are already assembled and in place and that you don't have to put everything together yourself. The universal tool that ships with the rack will do an OK job but a set of real box end wrenches or sockets will make for an easier and more secure assembly.I do love the fact that the universal tool has a bottle opener built into it, I wonder how many people even notice that. I have to give it to my ancestors the Swedes for always being prepared for anything! Once assembled the rack mounts very securely in the hitch receiver when you tighten the included hitch bolt. As noted in other reviews don't depend on the simple locks that come with the rack for security. A mildly determined thief can over come them by simply unbolting a couple of the bolts that hold everything together. That said the locks are good for casual security if you are having lunch or getting supplies and not attending the vehicle but it's in a visible area. Otherwise run a cable lock through the bikes and through some secure point on the vehicle, use common sense here folks. If you are traveling overnight bring the bikes indoors, this is a nice bike rack, not a bank vault. We love how easily the bikes load on and off the rack and how secure they are held in place while driving on the road. This is a well engineered rack and I'm very glad the investment was made up front and not in something less solid to save a few bucks. I can mount the rack onto the truck, load two bikes and be ready to travel in five minutes. As far as how the rack actually secures the bikes I like how they are not moving around and banging into each other or the truck. The wheel tiedown straps are simple but secure and the ratcheting frame clamp lets you lock the bikes in place so they just don't move, period. I drive a Ford Ranger and my one complaint is I can't drop the tailgate fully without having the tail gate handle land right on top of the latch button on the rack. Just one more inch would have done it but other than that I'm very happy. I've added some red conspicuity tape to the rack so that when it's folded up or down there is a nice red reflective surface to attract attention of the driver behind. You just can't be too visible, every bike rider should know that. My truck has a 2" receiver and the rack does not wobble or bounce around with the bikes on it with the hitch bolt torqued securely. Off road it does pretty well too but no point in beating your equipment to death so we go easy and everything is fine. Another nice "feature" is when we are done for the day and we want to clean the trail dirt off the bikes they are at a great height and position to wash them down and clean them up. Can't do that with roof racks or most other style racks! I give that a big plus for usability! If you plan to take the rack on and off the vehicle frequently bear in mind this is made of steel, aluminum will be lighter but you pay the price $$. If you can lift a standard bike on and off the rack you can handle the weight of this rack just fine. Overall we are very pleased with this bike rack and have recommended it and etrailer.com to several other people who stop and ask what we think. It has well thought out features, is solid and rugged and after a couple of months of real world use we can honestly say this rack was worth the price! And etrailer.com is a great place to buy it!! 143070

Still think this was a great investment! We now leave the rack on the truck for the season unless I need thetruck for hauling other stuff. My wife and I love how we can just popthe bikes on and off and go hit a new trail on the weekend or stop atone of our regulars on the way home after work.Everyone that sees it is very impressed and we have recommended etrailer.com several times to friends and strangers alike.

1994 Acura Integra

I purchased this bike rack in January along with a hitch bar for my 1994 Acura Integra. I usually use it to carry my bike at least 3 times a week. Overall it's been a decent rack, but I have a couple of concerns. After just a couple of months the foam rubber covers on the top tube hooks started polishing the matte black finish on my bike top tube into a shiny spot. Shortly after that, the foam wore all the way through, making a hole in the foam, and now has irreparably damaged the finish on my bike top tube. I now have 4 spots of missing paint on the top tube of my brand new bike. My wife's new bike also has a large spot of missing paint after using this rack and carrying both our bikes on a 1,000 mile road trip. I have to use a piece of foam pipe insulation with velcro straps around my top tube just to keep the hook from further damaging my bike finish. There also seems to be a good bit of movement in the rotating joints, especially between the middle horizontal support and the vertical support with the hooks. I added a couple of washers on the bolt to help take out some of that movement. I was quite nervous at the amount of movement of the whole rack with 2 bikes on it during our 1,000 mile road trip, but everything made it safely, except for the damage to my wife's bike's top tube finish. The other thing is that this rack is very heavy, and quite cumbersome and difficult to move around in the garage when the rack is not on the car. I prefer to take the rack off the car when not carrying bikes, so it gets removed and installed quite a bit. This has also caused the black paint to get quite scuffed or come off completely in several spots where the rack fits into the hitch, and in the hitch receiver itself. I did add a good bit of safety reflector tape to help the rack stand out more to vehicles approaching from behind. I would say this is a good rack for weekend use, but probably not for using every day or even every other day as I do. It would be nice if Thule offered replacement foam pieces for the hooks, or something of better material that won't wear through so easily and damage the bike frame finish. 96191

Comments

Foam covers on the hooks continue to wear holes in them despite my attempts to twist the foam around to different spots. All 3 of our bikes have damage to the top tube paint finish from this rack. Also, the rack itself has a HUGE design flaw. Even when your bike is locked in place, someone can simply remove the carriage boltsnuts holding the vertical arm to the main hitch bar a few seconds with a power driver, and BOOM your bikes are gone.I do not recommend this rack to anyone. Look for a platform rack that secures the bikes by the tires only. That way the rack doesnt touch the cars paint or the bikes frame.

Ford Fusion

I am just getting into biking after more than 40 years and needed a bike carrier for my pick-up truck which has a 2" class III hitch. A carrier that has the bike hanging was a definite NO for me because I've witnessed them swinging from the backs of vehicles equipped with that type. I wanted my bike to be more secure than they allow. After much research I decided that the Thule TH990XT was going to give me what I wanted, a locking platform carrier at decent price. I'd read the reviews about the 1 1/4" x 2" adapter allowing some wobble (more on that later) and was looking for a straight 2" hitch mounted platform carrier but the prices were more than what I thought they were worth so I went ahead with my purchase of the TH990XT. First off the shipping of my bike carrier was free and right on time! Can't ask for much more than that! The box that the TH990XT was in showed no visible damage and upon opening the box no damage to any parts, which were all there. I forced myself to use the provide wrench, and not metric sockets w/ratchet wrench, to assemble the unit just to satisfy my curiosity as to whether the provided wrench would do the job. While it obviously took a little longer, the wrench that comes with the product did an excellent job which really surprised me! From the time I took delivery of the carrier, wheeling it up my driveway to save the UPS drivers back, to having my bike mounted on it to took me all of 40 min. The instructions, to me, are pretty straight forward and easy to follow. I have read where some people had a problem installing the locks but mine went in just like they were designed to be installed. I did end up with one extra piece that I couldn't even locate on the parts list. It is plastic, coned shaped, about 1" long with a shoulder on the larger end. I have no clue as to what it is for but perhaps it fell off the hitch pin end where the lock installs and was meant to protect that end. Pertaining to the hitch receiver wobble that some people have included in their reviews I have absolutely none of that. I had my truck shaking back and forth, up and down trying to replicate that but mine is rock solid in the hitch. The wobble comes from the looseness of the swing arms as they have to be a little loose to allow their pivoting features and may be a problem for some but I don't see it as a deal killer. I would think that any bike platform carrier that has pivot points would be somewhat wobbly where they pivot. The locking system while good to have can be defeated and if you are the least bit mechanically inclined you will see what I mean. However, like my dad always told me, locks only keep honest people honest and thieves will find a way. The weight of the unit is what you would expect from an all steel unit. It installs in the hitch very easily. The bikes are easy to mount and I really like the ratcheting wheel hold down straps that even have a molded rubber adapter that fits over the rim making the wheel much more secure. The ratcheting locking arms are a breeze to use as well and hold the bike very securely. Bottom line is that so far I am very pleased with my purchase, dealing with etrailer.com has been a pleasant experience and I would highly recommend that you purchase the TH990XT bike platform carrier from them. 47731

Ford Fusion

I researched a long time before settling on this rack and though it has only been a couple of weeks I am really pleased. I am a recreational biker and recently had my bike drop off a trunk mount rack where it was dragged about 1/2 a mile. I wanted a good stationary hitch mount rack that is sturdy. The 990XT fits that description. Received the 990XT a couple of weeks ago and lost no time in getting it assembled and installed. Assembly was a breeze, all the pieces were included and the instructions were clear. Installed the unit on my Ford Fusion using the 1 1/4" hitch connection and the carriage bolt provided. One thing that is good to know, the nuts and bolt heads require metric tools or sockets, US style won't work very well. Loading the bike on to the rack was pretty simple and must be done with the center hold down post in the horizontal position. The center hold down post requires two hands to raise into position, so the bike must be leaned forward to rest on the trunk. This is a potential problem as the surface of the trunk might be damaged. I use an old floor mat to protect the trunk as the bike rests on it, a pretty easy solution. The hold down hooks are ratcheted and are pushed down to hold the bike in position. Each hold down has a lock for security of the bike, very useful. I've used the rack several times since I received it and and really pleased. The bike is secure, there is little or no side to side movement, and only slight front to back movement during transport. Overall, this is a really good rack. This is my first purchase from etrailer and I would recommend them to others. I received several e-mails with shipping and delivery status. etrailer upgraded my shipping to fastest way without any additional cost. Very nice. 57399

Honda Civic

I bought this rack to replace a Thule 2 bike hanging rack. It was delivered in just a few days. All the small parts were in the package and the instructions were easy to understand. I put it together and installed it in about 45 minutes. You could probably do it faster ( I am a 70 year old grandmother). I loaded up 1 bike and drove 30 miles to a trail I like. The drive was great- the bike was stable- no movement. It took me a minute or two to figure out how to load the bike on the inner rack the first time- the second time was easier.(Note when you are unloading the bike, if you detach all straps and top hook, the bike will fall over- duh! I won"t make that mistake twice!!!) I have now loaded a second bike on- that was very easy.I am looking forward to the next trip with two bikes. I drive a Honda Civic. This rack is great for my car. I think the hanging racks may be better on a bigger car. This does not obstruct my view to the rear. The locking mechanism is another great feature. I was using a chain lock before. Not necessary now. VERY VERY HAPPY with this product. 135466

Honda Accord

The main reason I purchased this bike carrier was because of the design. Unlike bike racks, this carrier holds the bikes by the wheels and a locking arm that slides down over the bike's upper frame tube. I find this far superior to bike racks which you simply hang a bike on. The greatest benefit of this carrier is that no matter what kind of bike you have, and no matter what kind of frame design the bike has, it will fit on the carrier, AND sit perfectly level, rather then dangle at a strange angle, simply by the bike frame. This is the best way to secure your bike, in opinion. The carrier is also adjustable, for just about any bike wheelbase, as the holders for the wheels are adjustable. The fact that the wheels are supported and strapped down also means that they will not be able to sway while in transit. True, this carrier weighs a good amount more then most bike racks, but it is not that big of a deal, and I would rather have my bikes secure then loose to flop around on a rack. It's great that this carrier also has built in locks, so you don't need to buy anything else to keep your bike safe. This is a really great product and does exactly what I need it to do. There is plenty of space between the rear bumper/trunk area of my car, even with a bike on the carrier, so clearance and accessing the trunk is no problem. Bottom line - if you want to haul your bike(s) around and not worry about swaying during transportation, this is the best carrier you'll find. 18559

2010 Honda Accord

Bicycle Rack that Begs you to take your Bicycles! This is a great rack. It comes with 3 locks (hitch and bicycles), is easy to assemble, easy to configure for your bicycle, can secure bicycles in a matter of minutes. Previously, I have used a Hollywood and Saris bicycle rack that hangs off the trunk. The Saris rack is much better for securing the bicycle to the rack but you still have the fact that you are dependent on the hooks to the trunk that tend to move around once you put weight on the rack and are moving. Also, you still have to secure the wheels and the handle bars from moving with bungy cords or straps. With the Thule TH990HT after you assemble and make the initial wheel well adjustments to your rack, screw the supplied bolt to the trailer hitch, you lift your bicycle into the wheel wells, cinch the attached straps across the wheels and push down the bar which has foam padding as to not scratch your frame you are good to go. It takes all of 30 seconds and is very secure. Note: You do need to have a trailer hitch in order to use this rack. I think this is a much safer, easier way to load and secure your bicycle. I installed this on my 2010 Honda Accord. 4213

Hi, first of all, thanks for your nice review. A couple of questions for you though:1 What type of trailer hitch mount did you install on your Accord?2 Do you have any issues with bottoming out of the trailer hitch striking the road and potentially damaging the vehicle or hitch rack?

2008 Kia Sedona

This rack arrived in good condition in three business days, was quick and easy to assemble, and works as advertised. It fit very well as is on my 2008 Kia Sedona, with good road clearance. I took the time during assembly to tighten every nut, even the ones that were already on the unit. I had read that some people thought the rack moved a lot but I suspect that they need only tighten it up to reduce that substantially. The only time I have seen it move much is when I drive over rough RR tracks. It is VERY easy to put the bikes onto and with the built-in locks they are very secure with no extra effort or time. Other racks rely on your normal bike lock but that would mean scuffing or scraping the paint off the bikes from the movement during transport where this rack secures the bikes with paddedbars. With the rack under the wheels, the bikes are secure from damage from anything hitting underneath and the bikes cannot swing like they can on a hanging rack. The rack easily folds up when out riding so that it does not stick out from the vehicle. We have nice bikes and this rack keeps them that way, and is quick and easy to use. Excellent design and execution - thanks Thule - it seems rare that a product does such a good job! 34672

2013 Ford Escape

Very easy to put together and assemble. Have used once so far and it was excellent. Holds the bikes firm. No marks on the frame with the padded top hooks. Also, on my 2013 Ford Escape, when folded and not in use, you don't even see it in the rear window, so unobstructed view in rear view mirror. 90949

We use it a lot and it is still performing perfect. You make a good product. We are just about to move to Tennessee from Minnesota, so we will get a chance to use it for over a thousand highway miles in two days. Should be an excellent test of its durability. Plan to bring two bikes back with us when we come back to Minnesota in September, so the rack will get another good test.

Volkswagen Sportwagen

We sold our Volvo wagon for a VW Sportwagen and found our 2" hitch heavy bike rack could not be used on this smaller car that accepts only a Class 1, 1-1/4" hitch. (You can get a converter extension but that reduces allowable tongue weight to half (100 lbs) and our old rack without bikes weighed about 50 lbs). The trailer hitch installer said "don't do it, not safe," so decided to buy a new rack. The great folks at Etrailer suggested this rack and I tend to take their advice. It arrived quickly, is extremely well made and went together without effort. It is perfect for our needs. The Thule description says it is for standard bike wheels 20-29." But I have a weird English bike with an electric motor front hub and with 16" wheels. The bike folds up to a very compact package so I bought this rack really for my wife's standard road bike. Turns out my 16" wheeler (a Brompton) fits just fine. The hitch installer gave me good advice and this works out well 105289

After reading many reviews on bike racks and going to several stores looking for a bike rack I decided on purchaceing the Thule model number TH990XT. I was very happy I did. First of all doing business with etrailer was great. Ordering on line was easy and following the tracking was kind of fun. I received the product on the time stated in excellent condition. Putting the product together was not difficult. I took my time and it took me about a half hour. The vehicle I put it on was a 2012 GMC Acadia. I have just used it once to take my wife's bike to the bike shop to have some work done on the bike. The bike rack cinched the bike down well, no problems. The things I like about the bike rack is its built well. It has some weight to it but not to heavy that would make it difficult to put on or take off. I like the three built in locks, one for each bike and one for the hitch, which gives some sence of security. I like that it was made in the U.S.A.. My wife and I like rideing our bikes at the beach so that will be what we will use the bike rack mostly for. 38353

2013 Chevy Equinox

SINCE I SOLD MY TRUCK, MY PROBLEM WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO TRANSPORT OUR BIKES TO THE BEACH. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THE TH990XT WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR OUR 2013 EQUINOX. WE ARE NOT DISAPPOINTED WITH OUR CHOICE. I BELIEVE THE TH990XT IS A UPPER END RACK AT A MODERATE PRICE,WELL WORTH IT.YOUR ON LINE SERVICE IS GREAT, NICE WEB SITE. THE RACK ARRIVED WITHIN 5 DAYS. NO PACKAGE PROBLEMS OR DAMAGE. THE FINAL ASSEMBLY TOOK LESS TIME THAN REMOVING THE RACK FROM THE SHIPPING BOX. DUE TO THE LOW BELT LINE OF THE EQUINOX I CAN SEE THE BIKES IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, WHICH IS COMFORTING ON LONG DRIVES. THE BIKES ARE VERY STABLE AND SEEM QUITE SECURE TO THE TH990XT. UNFORTUNATELY WE CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH LOCKS THESE DAYS BUT COMMON SENSE ALWAYS PREVAILS. SO FAR, GREAT RACK. I WILL GIVE YOU AN UPDATE AFTER I SHAKE THE DUST OFF THE NEW RACK. AFTER ALL, THAT'S WHEN WE FIND OUT IF IT'S A "GUDIN". I 'VE BEEN IN COOPERATE SALES FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS. KEEP UP THE GREAT CUSTOMER APPROACH, IT WORKS EVERY TIME AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD. THANKS! Chrysler 200

great customer service. shipping was much quicker than i anticipated. recieved email status updates regularly. the products was delivered to my door undamaged. unpacking and assembly took about 45 minutes with the supplied tools (very simple with good instructions). the quality of the carrier appears quite good. i purchased this to use on a chrysler 200 convertible which did pose one minor problem. the receiver for the hitch is recessed too far inward from the bumper and does not allow enough space to insert the carrier to the pin location. easily resolved by purchase of a reciever hitch extension at the local hardware store. getting the bikes on the carrier the first time was a little awkward, but after a couple of tries, it is very easy. bikes are stable on the carrier, and ground clearance is good, although i will be very careful around short steep driveways and large speed bumps. one excellent feature is that it will fold up while attached to the vehicle, this allows me to leave it on the car when parked in the garage. 32858

Honda Element

Looks to be a great product though I've not had the opportunity to use it yet. From opening the box to complete installation took me 30 minutes. Only one minor complaint. I can't open my tailgate on my Honda Element with the rack on. Before purchasing the rack I tried to locate a video on your website that showed a Honda Element with this bike rack and the tailgate open but could not find one. Over-all though I'm pleased with it. 67394

I like my Thule bike rack a lot. My only disappointment was that one of the caps on the end of one of the tubes came off almost immediately while driving which now allows moisture inside the tube, I know it means eventually itll rust. Its the biggest tube, that when the rack is lowered to accept bikes, faces backwards from the hitch - the main tube. Other than that Im happy!I can anticipate needing replacement parts at some point and Im sure Ill be looking on the website to order them! Thanks for following up!

Thanks for taking the time to follow up with us. We have replacement caps available for the end of the shank. The backbone tube of the rack that all the other parts attach to. It is part 853-7484, item S in the instruction set on the DoubleTrack. If you have any questions, give me a shout.

Honda CR-V

I have only the highest regard for etrailer.com. Dealing with them is a real pleasure. The hitch can be assembled very easily with the enclosed directions. It will perform its duty of hauling 2 bicycles to and fro, and I am very happy about that. I was hoping that the rear hatch of the Honda CRV could be opened without removing the bicycles, which is very unhandy. If it were not for this unfortunate oversight, I would have rated it a 5 star. 126052

How much play is there in the bike rack on a CRV? Im thinking of gettein a 2 hitch, and therefore would have to use the 2 - 1-1/4 adapter.

I have a 1-1/4 hitch. I also questioned if it was strong enough to support 2 bicycles. We have light weight Trek Hybrid bikes, and there is no problem with movement going down the highway. I do not need the adapter for my hitch. I will mention that you cannot open the rear door on CRV when bicycles are loaded. That is my only complaint. Hope this helps you.

Toyota Tundra

I can't enough great things about etrailer or Thule. The reviews and videos on the etrailer website helped me see how the rack fit and worked before I had to buy it. The rack shipped the same day I bought it and arrived in perfect shape. My wife and I assembled it on the floor of our family room in about 15 minutes. It took less than 5 minutes to install it on my Tundra. Then we drove to our LBS and picked up the Electra Ballon 8i bikes we had ordered. Since I had watched the video a couple of times it only took a few minutes to load both bikes. The rack was very stable on the way home and caused no worry. I read a couple of reviews where people said the locking arms of the rack were affecting the finish on their bikes. To avoid this I bought some 1 1/2" styrofoam pipe covers and covered the spots on the frames of my bikes where the locking arms fit over the bike frame. The has stopped my frame from being scratched. 163634

Honda Accord

Product is great, solid, works perfectly for my Honda Accord sedan, but I know it work work equally well on a crossover or SUV. I debated between several different hitches and settled on this one for the locks. I know that ultimately a determined thief can steal anything, but if you can deter, that works most of the time. I feel secure that I could go biking and then eat dinner at a cafe and not worry about it. Most importantly, I never worry about it coming loose on the highway. It is easy to assemble and to use. I also ordered a Thule cable lock (6ft -- but I wish it was longer). You can order locks so that the three locks on this and the cable all use the same key. Etrailer communicated well throughout the process and even sent me my item faster than expected. Great service. I would buy this product again and I have already shopped again at etrailer.com. Great experience. 53254

Ford Ranger

I recently purchased the Thule TH990XT to carry two bicycles on the back of my Ford Ranger using my hitch receiver. I chose the platform style carrier as the two bicycles are very different frame styles. I have had experience with other carriers and decided I wanted a carrier that didn't leave the bicycles dangling. I chose the Thule because of it's "same key" locking system for both bicycles and the hitch pin. The rack seems well-made and the only thing I could find to berate was a rubber endcap in one of the square tubes that had been forced in without being properly lined up. I suspect I will lose it eventually on some rough road. I look forward to using this rack as my community is finally building more bike trails and even altering streets to better allow bicycle riding safely. 11415

2012 Ford Focus

I put this Thule rack on a 2012 Ford Focus hatchback. This was a great option becuase I didn't want to drill holes in the roof of the brand new car to put Yakima landing pads on. This way we can take the rack off when we aren't using it. We did a ton of research on weight of the rack vs stability and I am confident that we made a great choice. We have taken this on one trip so far and are really happy with the way it holds the bikes and travels. It "wiggles" a little, but the bikes are really very secure. There is no movement from the hitch to the receiving part of the rack. I love that all the locking mechanisms are included! and no cables to run through the bikes. We carry two full suspension mountain bikes with this and are very happy with it. 45038

2008 Ford Focus

This is a great product. I have been researching aHitch Platform Bike Rack for my 2008 Ford Focus for a year. I ride from Bolsa Chica State Beach to Newport Beach with my son. One of my bike's is a hybrid and you usually have to buy an adapter on other style rack, but with this one you do not have too. Driving down the freeway you do not notice any movement from the rack or bikes on the back of the car. Very strong and love the locks for the bike rack and tow hitch, which came with the bike rack. My son put the rack together with no problem. I would recommend buying online or calling the 800 number from etrailer.com. The delivery to my house was expedited efficiently. My Thule Platform Bike Rack was delivered before the delivery date. 88495

Toyota Prius

The bike carrier is one intelligent product! The rack was really easy to assemble and install unto hitch. Folds nicely behind our new Prius; it clears both windows; hence, no obstruction. Nice welding and iron work. Makes loading easy for both men's and women's bikes. The hitch was a sinche to install; perfect for the Prius frame. The hitch bar is almost unnoticable. It does take two guys to install it. The only negative is the weight of the carrier. At 45 lbs, it is more than I expected. Using lighter weight metals would make it easier to install and remove from hitch from time to time. Etrailer service was beyond my expectations. My questions were answered and product delivered earlier than promised. Good job! 8887

Can you open the back door with bikes on the rack? If I wanted to leave the rack on the car all the time, is this feasable? I get into the back quite a bit and am worried that I would have to take the rack off and put it on too often.

comment by: vicki - 06/06/2013

Depending on the vehicle and hitch, sometimes you can open the hatch or trunk even with bikes loaded. The Thule T2, TH916XTR and TH917XTR, have a tilt-down feature that allows opening of hatch on truck on many more vehicles, but it is still not 100 percent. You can leave the rack on the vehicle all the time. The Doubletrack and the T2s are very well built and will hold up well, but the more the exposure to the elements the faster black plastic will fade or rubber parts will wear.

2004 Ford Explorer

I recently installed the bike rack on a 2004 Explorer XLT with a 2" hitch receiver. Only about a 15 minute process with the Thule instructions and the rack works flawlessly. The hitch pin bolt does a great job of eliminating any hitch rattle and the locks that come standard with this model minimize the chance of having a theft problem. Both bikes load easily and ride great. 75487

Volkswagen Eurovan

This is an excellent trailer hitch. It works well on my Eurovan Camper, which couldn't otherwise carry a pair of bikes. I was worried with the low hitch that it might be too close to the ground, but the design is sound and even on steep driveways, it always cleared. It rides well and is super easy to use. I couldn't be more pleased. 30771

Great bike rack. Easy to assemble and use. Mounted on a 2009 Dodge Ram. The only thing I don't like is having to screw in the hitch mount retaining pin on/off with each use. Will probably drill out the threads so I can use a sliding, lockable hitch pin. Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with the rack. 42420

My husband and I assembled the Thule Doubletrack TH990XT bike carrier on the back of our 2013 Chevy Equinox. All of the parts were included and we were able to follow the enclosed instructions. It took us less than an hour and we are not usually very good at this sort of thing. We haven't taken the bikes out yet, but we like how the carrier can be left on the car and still gain access to the cargo area. We can even have both bikes on the carrier and still get the car in the garage. The upright tube and hook assembly bolts seem to be lose and we weren't sure if it should be tightened. Thought maybe it was lose in order to fold the assembly down when not in use. The other thing we noticed is that the wheel tray can still be moved when the cam lever is in the closed position. Tried to tighten them, but then cam lever couldn't be closed. It is much easier to put my small woman's bike on this carrier than on the kind that hang off the back of the car. So far we are pleased with our purchase and look forward to taking our bikes out on the carrier. 86735

Comments

Since the tray was loose at first, then after tightening it became too tight to close, there should be something in between. You can use partial turns on the cam lock to find the sweet spot so that the lever will provide some resistance, but not have to be forced down.

We really like our Thule doubletrack bike carrier. We have made a few round trips from MI to FL and we have had no problems carrying our bikes on the long trip. I would recommend this carrier to anyone. I have also been very satisfied with etrailer customer service. One of the wheel carriers fell off and was gone. I started to search online to find the part I needed and decided to contact customer service to be sure I ordered the right part. The customer service rep not only determined the part I needed but also found out that the carrier was still under warranty so there was no cost. I received the part very quickly. I was concerned about knowing how to put the part on and they emaed me a link to a video to show exactly how to install it. Great customer service! Thanks!

This rack works as advertised ! I've had racks before, the kind that the bikes hang on....all the shack and rattle , use to worry about damage to bikes. With This rack however, no problem. Loads Easley and really secures the bikes well. As long as you lock every thing down like your instructed to do, this rack system is ideal for carrying your bike. Easy to install, really nice with the built in locks that come with it,and the ease of loading and unloading is nice too. If you want to ride down the road and not worry about. Your bike banging into each other, this platform system is the way to go. 99584

Purchased this to transport bikes on our 09' Saturn Vue. Possably some taillight/license plate obstruction but depends on closeness of vehicle behind. It could use washers to prevent the middle bar from having foward/back play. We did stratigically add reflecters for both stowed and transport positions since the rack basically blends with our car. Extremely easy to use and since there is allot of space between car & rack, you can remove the rear bike w/o disturbing the front bike and also open the car hatch w/o bike removal. Arrived slightly damaged with some gouches and paint scratches that appeared to be the result of bad packaging but touched up with some Rustoleum paint which we had on hand. This was our 3rd purchase from etrailer.com and will definately continue to purchase from them. The shipment came within a couple days and the email communication from them was fabulous and informative. 26891

I really like this bike rack. Assembly and installation were a breeze and etrailer.com shipped it fast. All of the information on etrailer.com (videos, pics, reviews) were great in helping me decide what to get. I chose this rack because (for me) it had the best mix of features/quality/price. I like the fact that it comes with locks to lock the bike to the rack and also to lock the rack to the vehicle. However, as another reviewer pointed out, this rack can be manipulated to a point (depending on bike type, I suppose) to defeat the lock that secures the bike to the rack. Not a big deal, really... I'll just add a cable lock. I also had a bit of a problem with the lock cylinders and universal change key in that the change key would not go into 2 of the 3 lock cylinders, preventing installation of the cylinders into the rack. I contacted Thule directly and they sent replacement lock cylinders, which arrived in less than a week. All said, I am very happy with this rack. I also have an inexpensive hitch-mount hanging rack that is not very sturdy and difficult to load bikes onto. My bike and my daughter's bike have different frame designs and the Thule TH990XT (platform-style) easily accommodates both bikes. It is a breeze to load the bikes onto this rack and the bikes are secure after doing so (with the exception mentioned earlier that will require a cable lock for extended security). As for etrailer.com, I will definitely be a repeat customer. 135630

I am very pleased with the Thule Doubletrack I purchased from etrailer. I have only used it one time so far and it performed flawlessly. Assembly was pretty simple and the directions provided were easy to follow. I originally ordered a different bike rack from another manufacturer but it was back ordered. I received an e-mail from etrailer with details of the back order and expected ship date within just a couple days from when I ordered. Well, nothing is fast enough for me so I called etrailer's customer service and got through immediately since a direct phone number was in the e-mail. After reviewing some other bike racks over the phone with Erika (she's the best, thanks Erika) I was able to change my order over the phone and the order was promptly shipped and received within a couple days with their standard shipping. Their communication and customer service is second to none. I've already placed another order with them and will receive it tomorrow based on the tracking results I reviewed today. I would highly recommend etrailer to anyone. They have a great selection of quality products and very competitive prices. Thanks again to all involved in my purchase, especially Erika. I'm disappointing in this rack because I have had issues with it melting. I have been using this rack to carry my mountain bike from Phoenix to my cabin in Pinetop, AZ. It's about a 3 hour drive and mainly uphill. I noticed on the first trip that one of the levers used to lock the wheel tray to the cross bar was lose. I didn't think much of it at first. On my second trip, I realized that the exhaust from the truck was blowing on the wheel tray and hold down latch. The heat caused the latch to melt and the wheel tray to warp. This rendered the inside rack useless. The tray and latch are about 2 feet from exhaust. I read many of the reviews and I didn't see any other issues with melting of the components. I guess I will just have to use this as a single bike rack. 100380

I read your review on the Double Track and wanted to follow up with you. We have not heard of this happening before with that much room, so thanks for letting us know.I have a replacement strap assembly and cam lever in the mail headed to you. You can set the cradle up with the latch for the strap and the cam lever on the other side of the cross bar. Like we have it setup in our first photo on our site or step 6 in the instructions. That way the latches and levers are not exposed.

Very nice bike carrier. Only criticism would be that I would like it if the wheel straps were just a bit longer. Hard to get them connected at first. I'm sure with time the holder will compress some to make it easier. Very happy with this product. 96505

After using this product for awhile, Im still very satisfied with it. When I stated earlier of a criticism, it was unfounded. There is a small block that is only really needed with small road tires. We ride with hybrids and a mountain bikes and the block made it hard to strap the bike in. Just remove or even reverse the block and all is well. Live and learn. Love the carrier.

Works extremely well, exactly as advertised, for one or two bikes on both of our two-inch SUV hitches. Caveat -- the Thule packaged box arrived two days early from etrailer (!), but was missing the critical carrier-to-hitch locking bolt, and bike mount locks, and the two keys. (Obviously a Thule problem, not etrailer's). Called Thule customer service, very polite, was promised the hitch mechanism tomorrow, but, alas, the other locks and keys in a week. We do want the proper hitch deal, and if it arrives tomorrow or even Monday no problem. (I have a standard trailer bolt working ok temporarily in the slot.) As usual, the missing parts thing is frustrating, but a manufacturer's issue. If my company, I would have Xpressed the keys from wherever in Europe, with apologies. Otherwise, this review would be Xlnt -- etrailer service and follow up certainly so, and assembly was even simple enough for me (1) in an hour, with no experience, and provided tool. PS. We chose the slightly more costly Thule over the similar Yakima precisely because it HAD easy locks, and was so marketed as such. Thus frustration. 20530

Bought this bike rack four months ago and have been using it about once a week. Very pleased with the way it holds the bikes. I did not want one that only held the bikes by their upper tubes. I use Velcro straps to secure the foam tube to the bike tube. The fact that the rack came with locks was a plus..Really like the way the wheels are held in by the ratchet straps. Sturdy construction and fits my 2010 Tahoe well. However, because it sticks out so far from the back, I have added several silver reflectors on the back bike support bar. Also, I have concerns that the two bike wheels block my tail lights too much so that someone won't see me braking or turning. So, I have ordered TL21RK Optronics Magnetic Mount Towing Light Kit which comes tomorrow. Will mount these lights under the back bike support bar. Read that they can detach if I hit a big bump, so I am planning to strap them on with black electrical zip ties. This way no one should say they can't see my lights at night or turn signals. Cheap insurance if I avoid just one accident. Lights will still be high above the roadways. 245888

Delivery was great, no negatives for etrailer.com. is great and serves its purpose well. Locking washers and bolts varied from product list, but not so much that one could not understand the substitutions. I laid all the parts out to the provided chart and it was obvious which pieces were substituted. All substitute parts are acceptable, but it is a little troubling when one is going by a part chart and there are substitutions. No product problems, just a mild unexpected. I drove with the new trailer hitch and bike rack loaded with my Kestrel 4000 and had no problems. Easy loading. Trunk access with the rack in place. I would submit that reflective tape be added to the rack for when it is on the car but folded for non-use as well as the outer rack bottom. I will do this myself, but it would be nice for it to be in place upon purchase. Obviously, a minor critique, but a worthy addition. 34133

That was the best thing I ever bought for my husband. It is so easy for him to get the bikes on now, and every time he uses it he says it is the best thing. Thanks for following up and thanks for having such a great product.

Ask the Experts about this Thule Hitch Bike Racks
Do you have a question about this Hitch Bike Rack?

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for a Carbon Fiber Frame and Carbon Wheel Bike
  • There are many options for carrying a bike with a carbon fiber frame but the Thule Doubletrack Platform Bike Rack # TH990XT is not recommended as it uses the frame to secure the bike to the rack. Your best option would be a platform style bike rack that holds the bikes at the wheels like the Swagman Semi, # S64686. You would not have to worry about the frame or even carbon wheels at all with this bike rack. The adjustable arm that holds the front tire will also fit a wide variety of...

  • Comparing the Thule Doubletrack TH990XT or the Swagman XTC2 S64670 Bike Racks
  • There are a few features that set the Doubletrack ahead of the XTC2, part # S64670. First are the tire cradles. The XTC2 uses the proven wheel hoops and rubber straps. Some people feel the molded wheel trays on the Doubletrack are a bit more secure and they will accommodate wheels/tires up to 3 inches wide whereas the XTC2 can only handle tires up to 2-1/2 inches wide. The Doubletrack has a certain appeal to MTB folks for that reason. They both use ratcheting frame hooks to lock onto...

  • Comparing the Thule Doubletrack and Swagman XTC Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Racks
  • First, the Thule Doubletrack, # TH990XT, offers locking ratcheting hooks to help secure the bikes to the rack. It weighs about 42 pounds, and it includes locking anti-rattle pin. The Swagman XTC2, # S64670, does not have locking hooks, but you can use a cable, # S64031, which also comes with a locking hitch pin. It has a shipping weight of 33 pounds. The Swagman XTC has a capacity of 75 pounds, 5 more than the Doubletrack which has a 70 pound capacity. The XTC has metal wheel cradles...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Platform Bike Rack for a Step-Through Frame Bike and 2014 Subaru Forester
  • First, highway driving should actually be less stressful on the rack than surface road driving because there tends to be less curves, bumps, pot holes, and other similar things you would find on the streets. Any of the racks you are interested in should have no issues on the freeway. Stability: platform bike racks are going to move around. This is because of their design. You have long platforms extending out from the center of the hitch with weight on them. There is going to be some...

  • Will Bikes with Fenders Fit on the Thule T2 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Racks
  • Bikes with fenders pose a problem for the Thule T2, # TH9044. Fenders often times cover most of the top of the tire and the T2 is not able to safely secure the bikes because you would have to place the hooks so low on the tire. A bike rack like the Thule Doubletrack, # TH990XT, would be a better option because it holds the bikes at the frame. I have included a link to a video review of this bike rack for you. If the 70 pound capacity on the Doubletrack is not enough, take a look at...

  • Recommend Bike Rack To Mount On Back of 5th Wheel Trailer
  • I contacted our representative at Thule and she informed me that the item you selected, Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH990XT, is not recommended for use behind a fifth-wheel. Thule does not carry any hitch mount bike racks that are designed to be used behind a trailer or RV. If you have a ladder on the back of your fifth-wheel is to use a ladder bike rack like the Swagman RV and Motorhome 2 Bike Carrier, part # S80630. I have linked the page showing all...

  • Need a Hitch Bike Rack for 2011 Toyota RAV4 that will Clear Spare Tire and Allow Rear Door To Open
  • We did an installation of the Hidden Hitch Class II 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 90207, on a 2008 Toyota RAV4 with the rear spare tire and the measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper is 4 inches. If your spare tire extends past the bumper, you will want to measure that distance and add it to the 4 inches. This will get you the exact distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest part back on your vehicle. To get a hitch bike rack that...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack that Allows Rear Door to Swing Open on a Jeep Wrangler
  • The Thule Doubletrack, # TH990XT, does not fold down with the bikes loaded so you would at the very least have to remove the bikes and then fold the center arm down to swing open the rear door on your Jeep Wrangler. What I recommend for complete access to the rear of your Wrangler would be to use a swinging bike rack like the Thule Vertex, # TH9031XT. First, the pin hole to back of mast measurement on this rack is 14 inches so make sure the pin hole to back of spare tire measurement...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Carrier for 2015 or 2016 Toyota Prius V and 2 Electric Bikes
  • I would need to know how much each electric bike weighs to determine if you will be able to carry them on the 2015 or 2016 Toyota Prius V. To use a hitch mount rack, which is going to be the only way to carry heavier bikes on a Prius, the hitch option I recommend is # 24847. This is a Class I hitch rated for 200 pounds tongue weight. Many of the bike racks that are rated for a Class I hitch do not have a very high capacity. So the Class I compatible bike carriers that might work for...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack with Good Ground Clearance for a 2011 Acura TSX SportWagon
  • The bottom of the end of the Thule Doubletrack, # TH990XT, will be 6 inches up from the bottom of the trailer hitch receiver opening so it will offer good ground clearance. The Hollywood Racks Trail Rider, # HR200, would be about the same if not a little better. It measures 5 inches of rise in the shank but that is measured from the top of the receiver opening. So it would be about 1/4 inch higher than the Doubletrack. The Saris Freedom, # SA4412B, would probably work out best for...

  • Why a Wheel Mounted Platform Bike Rack is Preferred to a Frame Mount
  • Generally speaking wheel mount only bike racks are preferred. Especially for people with carbon fiber bike frames since frame mounts aren't recommended at all with them otherwise damage could occur. For other frame designs people still prefer them because there is no frame contact. People with suspension also prefer wheel mount as well. Loading is also easier because when the wheel mount is lowered you just set the bike in the tray, raise the wheel mount and then secure it to the wheel....

The Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, item # TH990XT, will accept bikes up to 35 pounds each and is also a high quality rack that comes with locks to secure the bikes to the rack. Finally, the Swagman XC2 Wheel Mount Bike Rack, item # S64650. • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Honda CRV EXL with AWD

We have installed this on a CR-V, so I attached the installation instructions and the installation video for you to check out. (It is a good idea to check your vehicle owner's manual to see if it has a different tongue weight capacity than the hitch). The carrier itself, plus the weight of the 2 loaded bikes (at its maximum rated 70-lb capacity) would place more than 100-lbs of total load on the trunk area of the vehicle. I would not recommend this rack though because there is no guarantee that a bike smaller than 20 inches will fit. The Thule DoubleTrack, # TH990XT, is a better option since it holds the bikes at the frame and not the just at the wheels. Since the hooks come down on the frame a smaller wheel size will not be a factor....
