Video Transcript for Thule T2 Platform Style Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Review

Today we are going to show you the Thule T2 platform style hitch mounted bike rack, part number TH916XTR. The T2 is a hitch mounted 2 bike carrier with ratcheted padded arms to help securely grip the front wheels and a lock to detour thieves. The rack folds up for handy storage, and folds down to allow access to the vehicle. The new integrated cable lock system allows you to secure your bike to the rack via a cable lock. The T2 is a heavy duty steel construction and is made in the USA. It is covered by a lifetime warranty. :36

The T2 is also available in a 1-1/4inch hitch version, part number TH917XTR. The front wheel of your bike will sit in this bike tray. You can see there is a narrow channel down at the bottom for road racing bikes, but the rest of the try is set wide. So even the mountain bikers with 29ers can use this rack. When the bike rack is not being used, but is still mounted to the vehicle you can fold it up for extra clearance. Push the latch forward and pull up on the bike rack assembly. The bike rack will lock into place and it is tucked up and out of the way. 1:15

Loading a bike on the T2 is quick and easy. The front wheel sits up in the cradle and we will use our ratcheting hook to come down on top of the tire, just ahead of the brake assembly. The rear tire will sit in this adjustable cradle and will use a buckle strap to tighten it down. Take the buckle strap, pull it tight, and lock it down with the handle. With that our bike is secured inside our rack. One of the new features is the integrated cable locks that you can use for extra security for your bike. It retracts inside our upright post per ratcheting arm. Pull it out, and feed it through the frame of our bike. The cable comes back around into this plastic housing and a lock core will be used to secure the cable to the plastic housing. You will need to purchase additional lock cores to make use of these cable locks, they will be inserted here, and it will lock the cable into itself. Included with the T2 are three lock cores. One you will use on the hitch lock, the other two will be used on our ratcheting arm assemblies. With the bike rack unlocked we can push this trigger and slide our arm up and down. To secure the bike, once you have the arm in place, lock the core. With the core locked, we can no longer press the trigger down and release the arm. 2:52

The bike rack can even be tilted down even with bikes on it to allow access to the rear of your vehicle. First we will remove the safety pin and then come back and release the latch. The bike rack will fold down and allow us access the back of our vehicle. One of the most important features of the T2 is that none of the bike frame comes in contact with the rack. It is secured strictly by the wheels. So if you have an alternative frame bike, there is no need for an adapter bar. If you have a lightweight carbon fiber bike, you do not risk damaging the frame. Included with the rack is the Thule Snug-Tite lock. The Snug-Tight lock serves two functions. It secures the rack to your vehicle and pulls out any rattling that you might have inside your hitch. The bolt is threaded partway through so it pulls the shank of our rack tight against the side of our hitch. On the other end is the lock. The lock attaches to the end of the bolt and prevents it from being removed. There is a groove at the end of our bolt that the lock attaches to. Also, there is a cover to help keep moisture out of the lock and keep it from corroding. Now lets take it for a test drive and see how it preforms. That does it for the Thule T2, part number TH916XTR.

The bike rack can also be tilted down even with bikes on it to allow access to the rear of your vehicle. First remove the safety pin and then come back and release the latch and the bike rack will fold down and allow us to open the hatch of our vehicle. One of the most important features of the T2 is that none of the bike frame comes into contact with the rack. It is secured strictly by the wheels so if you have an alternative framed bike there will be no need for an adapter bar and if you have a light weight carbon fiber bike you do not risk damaging the frame. Included with the rack is the Thule Snug Tite lock. The Snug Tite lock serves 2 functions. It secures the rack to your vehicle and it also pulls out any rattling that you might have inside your hitch. The bolt is threaded part way through so it pulls the shank of our rack tight against the side of our hitch. On the other end is the lock. The lock attaches to the end of the bolt and prevents it from being removed. There is a groove on the end of our bolt that the lock attaches to. Also there is a cover to help keep moisture out of the lock and keep it from corroding. Now we will take our setup for a quick test drive and see how it performs. And that does it for the Thule T2 part number TH916XTR.

Purchased this for my 2012 Chevrolet Volt. There were no reviews specifically for my vehicle, so I was hoping for the best. The rack is somewhat of a pain to put together, and the instructions could be better. But what bothered me the most was the horrible locks that are included with kit. I do not even bother with them, I just use my cable lock and then everything is good to go. If Thule would put out a better lock I would rate this rack at a 10/10 but for now its a 9/10. The quality of the rack is awesome, and it is very easy to use once set up. One thing I did have to do though is trim one of the wheel scoops so the rack would not hit my bumper when folded up (super easy and minimal modification). I would suggest for Thule to come up with a lower profile scoop so people would not have to trim them. Other than that this setup works GREAT! I can't blame Thule for me having to trim the scoop since there was NO INFO on this rack for a Chevrolet Volt. But the locks, NEED to be better. Pros: Awesome Quality manufacturing Easy to use Functional No frame contact Cons: LOCKS ARE HORRIBLE. Drivers side wheel scoop needed trimming to fit my car (Not Thule's fault, there were no reviews on this hitch on a Chevrolet Volt. Thule if you are reading this, perhaps some lower profile scoops would let you get your racks on even more vehicles) 71318

I received the Thule TH917XTR the other day and immediately put it together and hooked it onto my Draw-tite hitch for my 2013 Honda Accord. This rack is great!. I have an expensive carbon bike and was not happy with my other rack where I had to use the rubber straps to hold the bike down. This platform rack is sturdy and fast to load and unload a bike on without having to worry about messing up your bike frame. I have to admit, when I drove 20 miles yesterday to meet up with my bike club, my eyes were constantly in the rear view mirror praying that the bike was secure and would not fall off the rack...not a problem...with the strap for the rear wheel and racheting down the arm on the front wheel, it was very secure. I had to wait until I got my Draw-Tite hitch put onto my car to determine if I was going to have enough clearance for the rack when it is folded up. The answer was yes. When folded up, there is 2 1/2 inches clearance from the closest touching point (the wheel tray holder). This is a very sturdy rack and I'm very pleased with it. 95164

I am not fond of this rack. I bought this Thule rack to replace a Softride rack that I could no longer use due to a quirk of my new car. First, despite buckets of sweat and effort, I could not figure out how to put the Thule rack together from the printed instructions in the box. I ended up having to pay a bike shop to put it together. (I'm not a handy guy, but I had no trouble with the Softride.) Once the Thule rack was together, I discovered that the Thule rack is much less sturdy than the less expensive Softride and the bolt that secures the Thule rack to the hitch is much less robust (and does not even use a nut). Once installed the rack wobbles. However, I admit that I haven't used the rack yet, so maybe I will get over my initial frustration 62219

Great product. We just got a new convertible and I could not use the roof mount or trunk mount. Using the bikes was important. Taking care of the bikes is important too. This bike rack is really the best I have ever had. It is extremely easy to use. I like that it has built in locks. I can use the hard top convertible on the VW Eos if I only have one bike positioned outward. It also works with no bikes installed. I could not be happier with this product and the incredible price, fast shipping and overall value from etrailer.com. 27662

Great product, reliable and safe. Easy to operate and the locking system is effective. The installation instructions were a little awkward in that the mfg. reverses some of the parts in order to fit all the pieces into the delivery box. So read instructions carefully before dismantling. Be careful when "dropping" the carrier in order to open trunk door - the weight of the bicycles quickly drops the carrier into the final locked position. Make sure to tighten the bolt connecting the carrier to the hitch - reduces any vibration while driving 59990

Great bike rack! Very easy loading and unloading and it's secure. It easily fold up and out of the way when not in use. A little bit heavy but for hitch mount it need to have a solid bar to carry the load.Very fast free shipping. Best price I found! ???? 96270

I am 23 and was able to put this all together by myself. I put it on a 2013 Honda CRV. When the bars for the bikes were put on according to the directions, the drivers side wheel well could not clear my bumper without rubbing it. Therefore, I measured the distance between the two bars and moved them down away from the vehicle. This worked well and fixed the problem. I can take this off and put it on all by myself and put it on all by myself. 78492

wicked fast delivery etrailer has great prices and top notch support. 2 hitches so far and a bike rack, no complaints. The Thule rack is nice, assembly wasn't too bad illustration could be a little better. Took about 45 min - 1 hr for this chick to assemble :) I like that it locks down on the tire so it won't mar the frame Only con is it's heavier than I thought it would be. 64620

Got to assemble it on a vehicle. The only brain dead moment I had was with the Keys. There IS a blank key, an Installation Key to put the key cylinders in place. At the END of the instructions, they show you the two keys. Oh, and the exploded, list of items shows the two keys. I'm an engineer... so when i doubt... go read the instructions carefully. 42056

Got this rack after finding out Yakima didn't make one to fit my hitch....overall seems good but heavy. I like the fact the rack with bikes don't "dance" behind the car but don't like having to use a wrench to tighten the bolt to the hitch.....kind of a pain. Great service from etrailer though...really looked after me! 37668

Description is confusing...three locks are included which secure the bikes. Two more locks are required, to provide extra security but the to pack lock keys will not match. A set of six extra locks are required to make the hitch a on key system. 32012

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

Recently purchased the TH916XTR from etrailor. First off my experience with etrailor was great. Product was shipped quickly and on time and everyone I spoke with or had email transactions with was more than helpful answering all questions. I found the 916 easy to assemble and extremely easy to use. Couple of things that could be improved on the product itself. -The front wheel tray needs metal threaded inserts for attaching to the platform instead of just screwing in to the plastic. This is a stripping accident waiting to happen. Have to be very careful not to over tighten. -The 916 has a good locking system but some odd quirks. The fact that it has 5 places for locks but only comes with 3 locks is well for lack of better terms just ridiculous and makes no sense at all. For this kind of money you should not have to purchase a separate locking kit in order to have a one key system for all locks. Even if you do not buy the one key lock kit you still will have to purchase extra inserts if you want to use the cable locks. Also when you purchase the extra locking system it comes with 6 lock inserts when you only need 5. Don’t really understand that either. I know you can use the extra insert for other Thule products but this does not justify having to spend the extra money on the additional locks. This product should come with all locks necessary. Just my opinion Other than that I am glad I purchased the TH916XTR. Easy loading of bikes and folds up nicely when not in use with plenty of bumper clearance. I use it on the back of Dodge 1500 Ram and have sent some pictures to show how it looks and works on my truck. As you can see the tilt down feature works great for being able to put the tail gate down. I have Zip wheels on my Madone with 3 inch rim depth as you can see the rear wheel bracket works well on these deep rims. When my mountain bike is added both fit well with plenty of clearance between the bikes. Minimal if any movement when driving down the road. Overall a great product and I would recommend this rack to other people. Free shipping is great also. Hope this helps anyone in the market looking at bike racks. 49132

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

Received 6 days after placing order. This to me is extremely fast for online ordering. Once we received it, we noticed that the box holding the contents was in pretty bad shape. It had a couple of holes punched in it one end flap was halfway open. This had me concerned, but when we opened it up, we found everything inside was snuggly packed and in great shape. They apparently pack for rough shipping. Now for the assembly. The tools supplied were very adequate, but if you want it to go a little smoother and faster a 3/8" drive with 19mm and 13mm sockets, 5.0mm "T" handle HEX key wrench, and Top/Bottom bifocal safety glasses (2x power). Use your own judgment on Safety glasses, but for us on up in age, the bifocals are a must. Assembly took maybe 30 min. It was easy and direct. No issues and/or surprises came up which is uncommon for me. Very sturdy on vehicle (2011 Ford F-150) and well supported. Folds up easy and opens back up just as easy. Installing the bikes, 2 Electra Townies, was a very easy task. Easy to lift onto rack and fasten. Once bikes were installed the rack was just as sturdy. Bikes seem to be held firmly in place with very little movement. Have not carried them on the road yet, but have no questions that it will perform well. Removing the bikes was a breeze also. The back wheel support band kinda got in the way, but was easily conquered. Overall, very well pleased with the T2 rack and etrailer.com's easy ordering and fast delivery of a quality product. 90937

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500 4x4 and was getting tired of loading our mountain bikes into the bed of the truck and because of my bed cover, I had to leave the tailgate down with bikes loaded. I was looking for a rack that would mount to the hitch that was solid and wouldn't scratch the bikes. I purchased the Thule T2 and couldn't be happier. It allows you to haul 2 bikes without the bike frame touching anything on the rack and is expandable to carry 4 bikes if you purchase the expansion rack. Clean & simple loading and unloading of bikes. The rack folds down to enable you to get into the back of your vehicle. I have to put the rack down in order to lower the tailgate with the bikes loaded. I ordered & installed the TH596 6 lock & 1 key accessory, this allows me to have one key to unlock all 5 locks on the rack. This rack is rock solid. Great construction & easy installation. The only thing that bugs me is that this rack is expensive and in my opinion should come with the 5 locks instead of having to purchase a separate kit. etrailer.com site is easy to use & has a ton of helpful videos that made my purchase informative. FREE shipping!!!! and it was fast. I received my purchase 4 days after ordering.. I would recommend etrailer.com to anyone! 95355

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

About a month ago, I bought Thule T2 2-Bike Rack TH916XTR from E-TRAILER. On line order went well. Delivery occurred in about 3-4 days. All components were included in a nice large box which arrived in perfect external condition. Actual assembly was performed and completed smoothly thanks to instructions contained in the helpful video that was provided by e-trailer web site. I had carefully watched one video made for a new FORD EXPEDITION that was 12 years newer than mine. I have attached 4 photos to show rack on my truck and respective clearance from behind and side as assembled and with 1 bike on. The 2nd bike was also attached to the bike rack but no photo taken. The whole experience was excellent. After a month of usage, the rack platform style did its job. Do not forget to check it bi-weekly and tighten it if needed as prescribed in the instructions. I will recommend to call e-trailer to purchase the correct bike rack that will fit your car or truck. 135212

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

1st installation instruction guided me to remove a bolt, nut, and washer from the linkage bar. I used a breaker bar and a pipe extension to remove the nut. The tool (wrench) that was supplied is useless. Other bolts on the linkage were also very snug. I bought the extra locks to ensure that I only needed one key for the whole assembly. Too bad the extra lock set comes with six locks. I now have three extras with no use. I wouldn’t want multiple keys to enter my home, so why would there be multiple keys provided with the original product? When I went to strap the rear wheel on one of my bikes I noticed that a rivet was not fastened to the cam latch mechanism. The rivet was not installed correctly and was crimped improperly. The receiver pin is threaded on the passenger side of the vehicle. It should be on the driver side so it doesn’t interfere with the electrical socket on my Chevy Avalanche. Let’s hope the rest of the rivets on this product hold up to use. Overall, time will tell how many repairs I have to make on this product. 62305

Comments

Was the issue with the rivets on the cam mechanism remedied.? I just purchased this rack and had the same exact experience........rivets were broken off the cam latch mechanism right out of the box. This causes me a lot of concern. It is really surprising, considering Thules general reputation for quality products......Was there ever a remedy to this situation with the cam mechanism?

As far as we knew, it was a single bad unit and it was not a widespread problem. You're exactly right, it's not typical of Thule products. When you can, send me your order number and we'll get in touch with you. There may be some date code info that will be helpful for us when we contact Thule.

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

Before buying the T2 rack, 2" trailer with locks, I did ALL the research on other makes and models and this was by far theee best! You pay a little more but its worth it, trust me. I chose E-trailer for the Great! price, Great! customer service, with videos, easy instructions and fast delivery. Yeah it took me about 1 hour to install but that's because I'm NOT mechanically inclined lol. I would recommend you use a 1/2" ratchet wrench drive to secure all the bolts. Once installed, its soo easy to mount and secure the bikes. I have included some pics mounted to my 2000 4x4 4-Runner. My 29er Specialized Rock Hopper and 26" 2012 Focus MTB. I made small adjustment (6" away from door hatch) allows for easy access. This is going to be a GREAT! summer with E-trailer TH916XTR bike rack. C-ya at the beach =) 46608

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

Overall customer service with Etrailer was good. They were attentive on the phone and answered all my questions. Feedback for future customers with a 2014 Forester 2.5 I installed a CURL Hitch 2 x 2 inch. Great value and solid construction. Please note that the opening of the hitch fits perfectly underneath the rear bumper. Looks great too. The only problem that I encountered was that the hitch sits 1 inch to deep from the rear bumper. See pictures. When the bike rack is placed in the up right position (vertical) the far left tire guard will hit the rear bumper of the 2014 Forester. To solve this I needed to move both silver rails 0.5 inch further out. I also had to re-position the left wheel holder/guard to allow room for the bike rack to close. see picture. both tire guards are facing the same direction. With these two changes it will close perfectly. Also the thule lock was abit confusion to set up. It requires a set up key to insert the key lock. Then you use the other key - smaller- to place the lock on the bolt. Once installed the rack works great. Did a 100 mile trip and the rack was secure and had no loose ends. I am happy with both purchases. 137190

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

Assembly was fairly easy, instructions not so much. The carrier comes with locking system for the hitch, for the ratchet arms, but not a lock for the cable pull out. You have to buy the lock extra for that. They should include it with the product if it contains it. The straps for the back tires fall off when you loosen to disengage. They should be attached to the frame so you don't loose it. Have not used it yet on the road, but not sure I will like it now. 77802

Hi Patrick, Actually we really like the bike rack we purchased last year. We just needed to hook it up a little bit better. We have used it many times cross-country and around town. I now would recommend it to any one.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! The locks are intended to be used in the cable locks and the hitch. Installing locks in the arm assembly is redundant if using the cable locks, so they are not included, but you can order additional matching locks if you would like to have the extras. As for the straps, those can be left in the ratcheting cam on the rear wheel retention device, and loosened and unhooked from the rear, that would prevent the potential loss of those if you leave them engaged.

Very solid product. Exactly what I was looking for. A little bit of assembly is required, but as my pictures show -- I was from the shipped box to mounted bikes in less than an hour! One of my bikes has a fender on the front wheel and I was a little surprised that the Thule instructions indicate that this bike rack should not be used with fenders. I think it will work just fine. But, if it causes an issue, I can always trim back the fender a bit... Thanks again for the great product, great service, great prices, and free shipping! 41248

Review from a similar Thule T2 Bike Rack with Cable Lock

This is an extremely sturdy and well built rack. Bikes load in seconds with minimal effort. It has 2 locking points for each bike, plus the tongue (see CONS). The tilt features work well-the main reason I picked this model. It is designed for 2" hitches, probably fits tighter than racks with a 2" adapter. I plan on taking my road bike w me on trips. Assembly is difficult with the tools provided. The Thule tool (i had to say it) is a poor wrench. Use a 3/4" (19mm) socket and wrench instead. Also, the thule 5mm allen wrench doesn't fit the bolt heads well, if you have a T-handle 5mm, use it. Directions are good enough. Cons. My biggest and most legitimate complaint is the locks, or lack thereof. A $400 rack that takes 5 locks should come with 5 locks!!!!!. It comes with 3 and if you want to use 5 you have to order 6-go figure! Also, It's pretty heavy, mounting it on your car is a 2 person job. 52262

Comments

I also am in the market for a new high end tray rack, and I agree with Ted 73.00 dollars for a 6 pack of locks??

comment by: Mark A - 12/27/2012

702

The multi-packs are a great option for those that want to convert all of their Thule accessories to the same lock number and have additional keys. Since the T2 already comes with 3 locks, if you wish to add more, it would be more cost friendly to buy 2 additional locks that match the ones on the T2. The part number is designated as THLOCKNXXX. Simply replace the XXX with the three digits found on the locks when you get your T2.

Patrick B - 12/29/2012

Comments

I have a question for Patrick B... Where do I get the THLOCKNXXX locks?

comment by: Susan B - 06/04/2013

1599

We have them here, but they are listed by each individual key number. For example THLOCKN113. Once you are on the page for that lock, you can change the "113" to whatever the 3 digits are on your lock in order to find the matching cylinders.

The Thule T2 916XTR + 2 bike add on T2 918XTR is a BEAST!!! We just took 4 bikes 3 mountain w/24 tires, & 1 kids w/16 tires on this rack on a 14 hour trip with no problems at all! This rack was used on our 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and yes the power liftgate cleared the bikes with the rack in the tilted down position. Caution though: you definitely need 2 people to do this because of the weight. This rack is simple to put together 1hr tops, load bikes on 10 min., secure w/the integrated cable locks 2 min., and SOLID! The only thing this rack needs is turn signals, which I added to mine. Also, for the price of this rack, it should come with 9 locks keyed alike instead of the 4 it included 2 keyed alike and 2 others keyed differently. I sent pics to spotlight@etrailer but not sure how to upload pics here. 91084

Love this rack! The ability to tilt it back without having to remove the bikes is awesome! Holds my DH bikes nice and snug even when the road gets really bumpy! While I liked that Thule included the lock tumblers (something they didn't use to in the past), I was disappointed that they only gave you three making the internal cable locks useless. Because of the weight of the rack, it can be a bit awkward when assembling it. I do appreciate that Thule included a set of tools to help put the rack together. I keep the tools in a plastic bag in my car just in case. Awesome rack! 45301

Carrier appears to be well built and substantial. Assembly instructions are not accurate and the Thule sticker on the bottom side of the top bar of the hitch and backbone assembly was applied about 1/2 inch too far toward the vehicle. When attaching the the cross bar assemblies according to the instruction, the front cross bar is too far forward and it prevents the release lever from operating. Also, for the cost of this rack, Thule should be able to provide a lock cylinder for all five lock position , not just three cylinders. We did order two additional cylinders, but, of course, they came with a different key than the rest of the rack. Am now attempting to rectify that problem. 24530

I got the rack yesterday. Came in good condition. I installed it on my CRV. The only concern I had is when the rack is down and I pull the release lever and I lift the rack toward the vehicle the mental bar moves up unevenly. The bar prevented me from moving the rack in an upright position. After working with the metal bar I was finally able to get the rack to go up. Glen 84536

Comments

Think Im having same issue wrack I just got. When u want to tilt the rack in any direction, I lift the release lever fully but the metal bar on it doesnt clear high enough so I have to play w/it in order to tilt. Cant figure out how to fix this.

comment by: bjm - 06/15/2013

Sometimes it will stick because the weight of the rack is dragging on that bar. When I use this rack, I lift slightly on the far end then swiftly and firmly pull the release leaver and the bar will clear allowing the rack to fold.

This is one of the best platform type of racks you can buy. The multiple methods of locking the bike are an added bonus which puts it above the Yakima that doesnt have an integrated lock. The Thule has locks on the ratcheting arm and the new model has an added cable lock built in to the arm that secures the frame and not just the front wheel. The only downside is that you have to but the locksets seperately. This is something Thule should add to the rack. Installation is simple. No real installation except for bolting on the wheel holder and sliding the racks onto the main carrier. 16091

Excellent high-quality bike rack. Some assembly required, but nothing difficult. Holds bikes securely and includes a hitch lock and bike locks*. *One negative note: The rack includes 3 lock cores, but it really needs 5. (2/ea bike, 1 on hitch pin) You will have to order 2 more lock cores separately which is kind of stupid. The only way to know what lock cores to order is to open the box, and look at the key code - so you cannot order both at the same time (unless you dont mind having 2 different key sets. This is no fault of ETrailer, It comes this way by Thule. 62552

Great bike rack easy on and off with the bikes. The back door will only open a couple of feet when bikes are loaded. The door does swing open about 50% when you pull the pin and drop the rack down to the ground. Very strong and stable, I went with the 2 inch hitch. It also came with 3 locks, One for the hitch and one each for the bikes all keyed the same. 107978

Hi Steve. Do the bikes cleat the rear spare tire without any problem?I have a 99 crv

comment by: Paul - 09/02/2014

6618

You can take one quick measurement to see if this bike rack will clear the spare tire on your CR-V. You can measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of your spare tire and cover, and if it is less than 7-7/8 of an inch then this bike rack will work for you. When the bike rack is folded up it is 4-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole, so this feature may not work for you with the spare tire mounted.

So far so good. Install was pretty simple, and rack seems pretty stable. I am able to get tailgate down when rack has bikes on in tilted position, which I a big bonus (the etrailer review suggested that wasn't likely the case). Only reason I didn't rank it a 5 is the fact that it doesn't come with enough locks. I knew this when I purchased it, but for the price seems silly that it doesn't. Also I would like the lock cables to be longer. Don't exactly give you a ton of length to work with. We will see how it holds up. 145115

Just about the ultimate bike carrier. Arrived in 3 days, assembly took 20 minutes or less. It is a little heavy for my wife to install herself and the fold down feature is a bit difficult and doesn't really work with bicycles on the rack trying to open the back door on her car (Toyota Sienna). I don't think it's right that you have to purchase lock cylinders separately if you want to use all 5 locks. With the Thule T2 bike rack, # TH917XTR, you would need to find a place to attach the hook on the end of the support strap so that the strap and buckle do not contact the vehicle. One option I have come up with is to use a Quick Loop Tie-Down, # TH530, along with a continuous loop strap like part # 753-2030-03. You...

  • Using a Thule T2 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack with a 1-1/4 and 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • If you are set on the T2 rack, go with the 1-1/4 inch version, # TH917XTR, and then use a reducer, # HT02, for times when you will be using it in the 2 inch receiver. I have linked a video and isntructions for you for the T2 rack. Another option is to go with a rack that fits both without the use of a separate adapter. Take a look at the Kuat Core, # N104. It has a similar design as the T2 and the two are comparably priced. Kuat was recently here doing training and demonstrated the Core....

  • Can a Hitch Extender be Used with a Bike Rack
  • The limiting factor is the capacity of your hitch. Using a 1-1/4 inch extender will reduce your hitch overall capacity by half. Your hitch has a 200 pound maximum tongue weight, so by using the extender you will be limiting your capacity to 100 pounds. Tongue weight is the weight of the bike rack, the extender (if used), and any load in the vehicle behind the rear axle, plus the bikes on the rack. You can see that, when using an extender, you will be significantly limited to the amount...

  • Using the Thule T2 # TH917XTR on a 2 Inch Receiver
  • The Thule T2 you mention, part # TH917XTR is compatible with the 1-1/4 inch receiver only. Thule does not offer an adapter that is compatible with the T2, like with other of their racks. In order to use the T2 on a 2 inch receiver, a Hitch Reducer sleeve, like part # HTO2 would be your best option. The locking hitch pin included with the T2 will work with the reducer, but an additional hitch pin like part # PC3 or lock like part # 40107 will be needed to retain the reducer into the...

  • What Adapter is Needed To Attach the Thule T2 Platform 2 Bike Rack # TH917XTR to a 2-Inch Hitch
  • To be able to use the Thule T2 Platform 2 Bike Rack, part # TH917XTR, on a vehicle with a 2 inch hitch receiver you will need to use the Brophy Hitch Reducer, part # HT02. This will reduce the 2 inch receiver on you vehicle down to the 1-1/4 inch size that is needed for the Thule T2 bike rack. To lock the hitch reducer to the vehicle and to lock the Thule T2 bike rack to the reducer I would also recommend to use two of the Deadbolt Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # 7683. I am including...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation For a 2009 Honda Fit with 1-1/4 Inch Class I Hitch
  • All three of the bike racks that you mentioned are high quality carriers that will safely carry two bikes with no trouble and protect the bikes from damage that other hanging style racks will allow to occur. The Yakima Holdup Rack, will not fit in a Class I hitch though, so it would not work on your Honda Fit. Between the Thule T2, item # TH917XTR, and the Kuat Sherpa, item # S101, there are a couple of things to consider. The Thule Rack has been around longer and has stood the test...

  • Bike Rack and Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2012 Mazda 3i Touring Hatchback
  • You can install a trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver on your 2012 Mazda 3i Touring Hatchback. The trailer hitch that I would recommend for you would be the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, # 24843. This hitch was designed for the hatchback models of the 2012 Mazda 3 and gives you the same weight capacities as the other hitch options at the most economical price. I have attached the installation instructions for you to check out. For a bike rack, I would recommend the Thule T2...

The Thule T2 # TH917XTR with 100 pounds, Kuat NV # N102 with 110 pounds and the Kuat Core # N104, each with a 120 pound capacity. The Kuat Core will only fit Class II 1-1/4 inch hitches and the Kuat NV and Thule with fit both Class I and II 1-1/4 inch hitches. • Recommend 1-1/4 Hitch Extender For Thule T2 # TH917XTR To Clear Rear Bumper When Folded Up
  • For a 1-1/4 inch hitch extender, we have the Brophy Hitch Extender, part # HES6. This will extend the receiver by 6 inches. However, when using a hitch extender you will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch in half. So if you have a Class I hitch which has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs, you would be limited to carrying 100 lbs. This includes the weight of the Thule T2 # TH917XTR, which is about 50 pounds, plus the weight of your bicycles. You will want to check the...

It weighs only 33 lbs as compared to the 56 lbs of the Thule T2 Platform-Style Carrier # TH917XTR. I've included links to video reviews of both racks. Please note, tongue weight capacity of a Class I receiver is 200 lbs and this will include the weight in the rear of the vehicle or the vehicle trunk. • The Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, item # TH917XTR, is designed to be used in the 1-1/4 inch Class I and II hitches. You will need to measure to make sure the bike rack will work on your vehicle. If the measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole on your car to the farthest out part of the bumper is less than 7 inches then the T2 will fit just fine. But the Kuat NV is compatible with a Class I trailer hitch, so unless some part of the rack makes contact with the vehicle, it should fit. On the Thule T2 Platform Rack, # TH917XTR, you will need to run the strap down to the main support tube at the center of the rack, and then back up to the trunk lip or other suitable location. • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a Subaru XV Crosstrek with OEM Hitch
  • The newer OEM Subaru hitch is a bit of an oddity. Because that pin hole is so close to the end of the receiver, that means that very little of the bike rack shank will be inside of the hitch. That will produce a lot of stress on the hitch and bike rack shank. Thule was actually the company that brought it to our attention and asked us what we thought they should do. Subaru did not think too much about accessories when designing this hitch and I am not comfortable with any bike rack with...

However, which is the right rack for you depends on a few factors. First, you are going to want to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole straight back to the distance required to clear the rear of the vehicle.
